ABSOLUTELY CAPTIVATING !!! Title: The Test Series: The Secret of Spellshadow Manor Author: Bella Forrest Designation: Part 5 of 6 Book Series, Full-Length Novel (Approx 400 pages), NOT A Standalone, Cliffhanger Ahead Genre: #fantasy #sciencefiction #actionadventure #mystery #comingofage #romance My Rating: Five Spellbinding Stars***** Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! Bella Forrest rocked my world AGAIN with The Test, the fifth riveting release in her captivating new magical fantasy series, The Secret of Spellshadow Manor! And great balls of fire, it just gets better and better! Forrest has been a busy little beaver! After publishing a new season of the international bestselling A Shade of Vampire series in the past twelve months as well as introducing two other new blockbuster series, The Gender Game and the Detective Erin Bond mystery thriller series, you'd think Forrest would be ready to sit back and take a breather. Nope, just the opposite! I honestly don't think Forrest ever sleeps. Not that I'm complaining... not one little bit! Like thousands of my fellow Bella Forrest fans around the world, I've been hooked since the first book of Forrest's megahit A Shade of Vampire series and now 56 books later, I still eagerly await each new release. I don't even care what genre it is. If Forrest writes it, I'll read it! And it comes as no surprise, Forrest has delivered another new installment in this gripping fantasy adventure that curls our toes, makes our hearts pound and keeps us begging for more! The Secret of Spellshadow Manor is a beautifully written young adult saga unlike any I've ever read. If you loved Harry Potter or Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Secret of Spellshadow Manor is definitely for you. Quite simply, it's an irresistibly delicious all-you-can-eat buffet of magic, fantasy, action, adventure, mystery, danger, suspense, angst, and blossoming coming of age romance. But never fear, my friends, it's also a deliciously tasty treat for us older adults who remain young at heart! The story is well crafted, imaginative, thrilling, fast paced, action packed, suspenseful, sweet, romantic and at times, also dark and mysterious. Whew, what a mouthful, but these are only a few of the words that come to mind after reading The Secret of Spellshadow Manor. The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person with a primary perspective from seventeen-year-old high school senior Alex Webber of Middledale, Iowa. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flows effortlessly. Although the premise and storyline for this series is beyond intriguing, and the vividly depicted world of Spellshadow Manor is nothing short of extraordinary, it's truly the cast of complex characters that truly steals the show. They are well developed, fascinating, engaging, endearing, and most importantly, memorable. They literally explode from the pages, grab your imagination, capture your heart and hold you completely enthralled from beginning to end. Forrest skillfully combines every single one of these elements to craft a beautifully written coming of age fantasy filled to the brim with magic, danger, action, adventure, fantasy, mystery, suspense, magic, loyalty, and heartbreak, lies, deceit, secrets, angst, young love, and plot twists that will blow your mind. After reading every single one Forrest's books, there are two things I've learned beyond a shadow of a doubt. First, when reading anything written by Bella Forrest, always expect the unexpected and two, absolutely nothing is ever impossible as any of her readers have witnessed time and time again. In each book Forrest pens, she takes her readers on an emotionally thrilling roller coaster ride, unlike any other, one that keeps us on the edge of our seat and riveted to each page while screaming, "OMG - that didn't just happen!" And the icing on the cake, Forrest's books are always exceptionally well-crafted, edited, formatted and have gorgeous covers! Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! Would I recommend it? You bet, and I am, for ages 12 to 112. Will I read this author again? Of course, just as soon as Forrest publishes her next book. Forrest has the most extraordinary imagination of any author I've ever read, one which knows no bounds! And finally, was I entertained? OMG, YES! Completely! I was glued to my seat, completely enthralled, white-knuckling my ereader with my heart beating wildly in my chest as the pages flew as quickly as the time, and all the while screaming, "Don't do it!" OMG! I was a nervous wreck! lol... I can hardly wait to see what's in store for Alex, Natalie and their friends in The Spell: Book 6 and conclusion of The Secret of Spellshadow Manor! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read! Book One: Unlike his friends, seventeen-year-old Middledale, Iowa high school senior Alex Webber spends all his free time learning to write computer code and building websites. He's becoming quite the young entrepreneur. Unfortunately, his efforts are born from necessity rather than pleasure. Since Alex's mother was diagnosed with a debilitating long-term illness leaving her unable to work, he desperately needs to earn enough money to supplement their meager monthly income. Hosting a foreign exchange student was supposed to be just another way to add much-needed funds to their dwindling monthly budget... until Alex meets the student...a lovely young seventeen-year-old female student from France named Natalie Chevalier. Oh my! What normal red-blooded seventeen-year-old young man wouldn't appreciate the beauty of a charming French girl, right? When the two teenagers meet, they instantly become fast friends with each looking forward to the upcoming new school year. They're just a couple of normal teenagers who want to enjoy their senior year, right? Hmm... But Alex and Natalie may not be quite so normal after all. What happens when these two seemingly unremarkable young people, brought together by fate, realize they may not be as ordinary as they thought? In fact, they may be quite extraordinary. After seeing a strange and very frightening ghostly figure following Natalie, which apparently one no one else could see, Alex is faced with a life-altering decision that may interrupt his well-laid plans and change his life forever. But there is only one choice for the pragmatic yet sensitive young Alex - no matter the risk, he must protect his new friend Natalie. But at what cost? The Breaker: Book 2 It's been several months since Natalie was abducted by the ghostly phantom known as Finder, and Alex was mistaken to also be a new recruit for the magical school located within the walls of Spellshadow Manor. No matter their efforts, Alex and Natalie find themselves still imprisoned behind the ivy-covered walls of the mysterious manor. There's only one little problem and it gets worse with each passing day. Unlike the other students at the school, including Natalie, Alex has no magical ability at all. In fact, his problem is just the opposite. Alex discovers he is a Spellbreaker and possesses an inherited genetic trait enabling him to wield a power called anti-magic, an anomalous force which counteracts magic when used correctly. But according to the limited information available, it appears Alex may be the sole surviving Spellbreaker. And why is he the last? Because the other spellbreakers have been hunted to extinction and destroyed by Finder and his predecessors, which means his unnatural new ability is very dangerous to his continued well-being at Spellshadow Manor and must be kept a secret. Of course, we all know seventeen-year-olds are never good at keeping secrets, especially not when he needs the help of his friends Natalie, Aamir, and Jari to cover for his lack of magic. Unfortunately, Aamir may no longer be an ally. Alex's friend and former roommate, Aamir Nagi, is now Professor Nagi. To avoid the impending questionable fate of 'graduation', two weeks ago Aamir challenged and defeated the now missing Professor Derhin in a magical duel. Alex and his friends had hoped this would give them an advantage, possibly helping them to escape, but by all outward appearances, Aamir now seems to be controlled by a magical golden band placed around his wrist by the headmaster of the school, The Head. Yup, you read that correctly; the headmaster is named The Head and he is one scary dude! Nothing is as it seems but Alex is still determined to rescue Natalie and orchestrate their escape. Join our brave, young heroes as they continue their perilous adventure where they must learn to navigate the ever-changing hallways of the mysterious, magical, and very dangerous new world of Spellshadow Manor, where nothing is as it seems, and where one mistake could cost them their lives. For lurking in the shadows at every twist and turn, Alex discovers even more treacherous forces, laden with dark magic and murky secrets, all waiting to make an appearance. But are they friend or foe? We'll see! The Chain: Book 3 After almost a year of continuing the ruse as a student at Spellshadow Manor, Alex orchestrates a daring escape, unexpectedly aided by a student uprising, two of his professors, and crucial information from the strange, shadowy Elias. Our brave, young heroes travel through a magical portal in search of safe haven, but rather than the human world, they find themselves at Stillwater House, another school for magical students, which at first glance appears to be the antithesis of Spellshadow. But appearances can be deceiving and all is not what it seems. In his search for a way home to his mother and a normal teenage life, Alex finds only dark secrets leading to more questions about his abilities and heritage. With new enemies and perilous danger at every turn, Alex desperately attempts to protect his friends, but the cost is high - maybe too high. This time, the price may be his life. Not all will survive. Who will live and who will die? The Keep: Book 4 Tricked into revealing his true identity and developing powers by Princess Alypia, Alex and his friends risk everything in another desperate escape which lands them at yet another magical haven, but there's nothing safe about Keepstone Keep. Thankfully, they find two familiar faces who agree to help them. Alex learns more about his origins and his powers but with Alypia hot on their heels, time is of the essence and sadly, his heroic efforts may not be enough to keep them all alive. As more dark secrets are revealed, Alex meets an unexpected ally and is finally given the answers he's sought his entire life. But is it too little too late? Will he and his friends ever find a way back home? The Test: Book 5 After another devastating betrayal, Alex is nearly killed by Caius. Now separated from his friends and stranded at Kingstone, a desperate Alex embarks on an impossible mission of finding a way to reunite with Professor Lintz, Aamir, and Ellebelle, who traveled through the portal to Falleaf House. When all seems lost, fate once again favors our young hero with another new friend, a legendary Thunderbird possessing a strange intelligence along with the ability to travel between realms without a portal. But soon after his reunion with his friends at Falleaf, Alex receives more disappointing news. To gain access to the spell in the Book of Jupiter that will banish The Great Evil, he and his three friends must first pass a test consisting of twelve tasks, all of which must be completed successfully. Great sacrifice will be required and all rules must be adhered to strictly. But only the worthy will succeed. Failure means death for our motley crew! Oh my! Only the penitent man shall pass! Just a little Indiana Jones humor to lighten the mood! lol... Will Alex and his friends find themselves worthy? Who will live and who will die? We'll see!
So yes, we did go to Fall-Leaf House in this book as expected. I really liked Hadrian and his sister and how they were trying to get around the draining of essence thing. Alex annoyed me so much during this book. Sorry to make the comparason but when Harry found out that he had to die at the end of Deathly Hallows, he went to his death with acceptance. When Alex finds out he has to die to save everyone he instead tries to avoid it, forcing Virgil to do it because he felt that he was too young to die and because Virgil had done awful things in his life and was old it would be okay to make him sacrifice his life. I'm sorry but that is bullcrap. The book was interesting though. I really enjoyed the trials Alex and his friends had to do in order to get the book of Jupiter. And Storm was awesome. Still totally hate the romance in this book, and I doubt if I'll change my mind on that. It is forced and definitely lacking in passion. I can't wait to read the last book and finally see this great evil dealt with.
This is one of those stories I REALLY wanted to rate higher. I like the story in general and the world created, up until this point, but there are several glaring plot holes and issues I had.
As the previous books in the series did, The Test begins where The Keep ended, with Alex and his friends splitting up to return to the havens at Stillwater or Falleaf House, where Caius's son Hadrian is head. Alex, now separated from his group due to Caius's mental breakdown and sabatoge, is forced to find an alternative means of transport. Conveniently, he stumbles upon the Thunderbird as described in Spellbreaker legends as names her Storm, who becomes his primary mode of transportation outside of the portal hopping the other characters do. Alex's primary motivation through is novel is twofold: to learn more about the "Great Evil" spell which is affecting the magical world and obtain it's counterspell, reputed to be held at Falleaf house, and to organize what amounts to a revolution of students across all the havens. The former, our hero and his friends learn, involves the eponymous test. Alex and three of his companions undergo a 12-part "labor," akin to Orpheus or Hercules, in order to obtain the book. The latter driving force of the student revolt takes place mostly behind the scenes at Stillwater, with Helena from book 3 taking charge along with Jari and Natalie. I did like the concept of a mythology-styled labor in order to test the participants worthiness, however it fell a little flat and was somewhat predictable and rushed. Alex is starting to demonstrate a remarkable stubbornness which doesnt really fit with the concept of "hero," at least not in the sense that garners worthiness. It's actually starting to annoy me a great deal how much it's affecting his judgment, especially when it comes to his romance with Ellabell.
I feel as though the world building just fell apart in this book. It's a mix of enormous plot holes and deus ex machina - i.e. the Thunderbird who appears out of nowhere and suddenly is a willing domesticated steed for Alex. I also felt really frustrated, and honestly bored, with all the romantic nuances. Discussions about feelings between characters, characters' relationships, and implied feelings are EVERYWHERE in this book, but not like a supernatural teen drama where at least there is some sexual tension. Here it just seems like a huge distraction and doesn't really contribute to the overall story.
As far as plot holes are concern, I'm listing a few that I feel the author has skipped over and not explained well: -What exactly makes a Haven a haven? How is it separate from the non magical world, or for that matter, the places where mages live their normal lives? How/why are there only a few left? What exactly happened that made the rest fall? -Noble/royal bloodline seems to be a big deal in this world, but what exactly does that mean? What makes a noble a noble, or for that matter a royal? What is so special about King Julius that enables him the write to "rule" this mageworld? Is there some system of governance beyond snatching kids to feed their essence to a deadly spell? -How is it the "access" points of this Great Evil are only located at Havens? It seems awfully convenient that these black holes of miasma are contained in Havens, rather than auras of malevolence spreading free form. Also what would happen to non-magical folk if it escapes? Is it truly deadly to the world at large, or just to mages? How is there already a written counterspell to this, anyway? Did it happen once before? The existence of the spell itself means that it was planned and thought out, not a spontaneous act of vengeance during a genocide of spell breakers. - I am still stuck on the lake back at Stillwater house. They made such a big deal of it in the first three books, but now it isnt even mentioned. It seemed like an interesting world-building plot element. Recall how mages used it as a tomb for dead spell breakers (Why???), and the way the water tasted great to the mages but terrible to Alex. The implications there are sinister and ought to be explored more in this mythology. - I feel like this general use of essence is also sinister, and the characters have become quite cavalier about it, even deliberately using it as a weapon. Initially, it struck me as an abomination, stealing one's soul and feeding the magic into the Great Evil, but now it's just a convenient tool for boosting magic and anti-magic, which bothers me a great deal. There is no remorse or thought put into it when Alex starts throwing essence around, or demanding more essence from Hadrian. I mean, what's the point in having magic at all if you are relying on someone else's soul power to do it all for you? I feel like this series has lost a lot of the mystery which attracted me at first, primarily because of sloppy world-building. I think the author was trying to stretch this out to 6 books but hasnt taken the time to really give this world more substance. Not to mention there are a lot of things that just dont make sense to me as a reader. I do want to finish this series and see how Alex's adventures play out, though it's too bad stories like this cant be rewritten because there is a great foundation here, just poor execution.
Wow, where do I begin with this book? The penultimate book of The Secret of Spellshadow Manor was as exciting and fascinating as the others. The intricate storyline kept me hooked throughout every chapter.
Firstly, I loved the introduction of Storm, the Thunderbird. I have been wondering about these mythical creatures since they were first mentioned and I enjoyed getting an intimate insight to Storm and her relationship with Alex. It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter and Buckbeak actually, which is perfect being such a big HP fan. I also loved the development of Alex and Ellabell's relationship. I like Ellabell's strong and independent character and that she is not some damsel in distress that needs to be saved constantly.
I was definitely not happy that we lost Lintz, he was one of my favourite professors from the beginning and it broke my heart when he sacrificed himself so they could continue their quest. It was actually a very heartwarming scene to imagine and I feel that the loss was very significant whether I liked it or not.
I wish I could write more about this book but unfortunately, I've not been well so this will have to do! My final comments are about the final spell, I thought that either the spell would either fail or be successful, I really did not expect the Great Evil to be released. I had guessed about the issue regarding royal blood but the final chapter was still beyond my imagination. I'm really intrigued to read what the group will do now and also Elias's part in all this. The shadow man irritates the hell out of me but I really hope he does something good for the sake of Alex. We'll find out on 30th September!
Alex and friends take a step into a vault at Fall leaf house to find the Book of Jupiter so he can learn the Spell to cast out the Great Evil. In this story they bounce around form one realm to another upon a great Thunderbird named Storm, she is a warbird! Alex must do several test to prove he is worthy to retrieve the Book. Well worth the read!!! 5 Stars
What amazing reading. Bella Forrest did it again. How don't know how she do it, but her stories are so original and her writing style capture in this world that she has created. We see Alex again in a story full of action ,suspense. These books get better and better. Can't wait to see what's going to happen next to Alex and his friends.
Excellent fifth installment in The Secret of Spellshadow Manor series. Alex meets a thunderbird, some close allies are lost, and the head is taken but an even bigger evil will have to be faced in the sixth and final installment. This book was well written and kept me actively engaged from the beginning to the end.
Yet again this author didn't disappoint. The friends go to the fourth haven and work on their plans to free the magic world from the Great Evil, while Alex learns as much about himself as about magic. This far into the series you may have to read the other books first, but the standard of the writing doesn't drop. Highly recommended.
OMG!!! Seriously another book!!! I really liked this series but it could have been done in 4 books. It's been dragging and it pains me that I have to read another book to find out what happens. It's like watching a good movie but it being too long with snoozes between important parts. This writer basically has made it very clear that they don't want me to start another book written by them.
Two books set on Spellshadow Manor, one at Stillwater House, one at Kingstone Keep, and now we travel to Falleaf House. A trip to each of the four remaining havens. More fighting, more intrigue, more friendship, more loyalty, and a cliffhanger to end upon. The intensity is increasing as Bella leads us to the finale.
As always I completely enjoyed this book of Bella's. They move fast and keep your interest until the vend. I can't wait for the next book in the spell shadow series. I can't wait to see how Alex's story ends.
Lots of action and a new addition to the group! The gang went through the 12 tests to be able to get the book they seek. They worked so hard but there was a glitch tate end. Glad that the last book is out soon.
Exciting story, can't wait to see how it ends! Really hoping that they are able to rescue Lintz... Unlikely, but I would like to see him get out with everyone else and experience life again.,.
The Test was a good next installment on this series. In some ways I expected more from the testing part of this book. Still, it kept my attention and set up the grand finale of the book. I look forward to the final release at the end of September.
Really enjoyed the first few books, but on book 4 it really started to repeat and rehash. So to find we are now onto book 5 seems a little stretched out. Did not enjoy this at all and still not resolved by the end of book 5!!!!! A case of a series that is just too overlong.
The further I get into this world the more dystopian it feels. The atrocities of the ruling class of the magic elite seem to have no bounds. I'm almost glad to be at the end of this series; here's hoping for a satisfying if not happy ending in the final book.
This was a pretty good series for a quick lighter read. I enjoyed the whole story line. I did not like the 5th book as much as the other books in the series, but did like the way Bella concluded the storyline.
Fastest book I have read in a long time. I have really enjoyed the width and depth of the story and the characters. I'm rushing to get the spell as I type this.
