Sun Stand Still called us to live with the audacious faith we see in God's Word. This 40-day devotional offers Bible readings and reflections that will transform your understanding of prayer. The miraculous can be part of your life!

In four years, Elevation has grown to more than 6,000 people in regular attendance in three locations. Inspiring! Full Of Pithy Phrases That Pack Powerful Thoughts!
This book is a devotional version of the wildly popular book Steven Furtick wrote called Sun Stand Still. It encourages you to have audacious faith and to develop audacious prayers like Joshua who dared to ask God to stop the sun so that Israel could continue their battle and become victorious. God answered that audacious prayer, and Furtick states that God is waiting to answer similarly audacious prayers that are offered with audacious faith today.
This book is written as a 40 day devotional. Each day is a very short, easily digestible chapter with pithy phrases that pack powerful thoughts. I love the fact that the prayer for the first day is to develop audacious faith. After that happens, so much more is possible!
There are some fabulous sound bites in this book that encourage you to press on and do the type of amazing work through you that God has planned. While Furtick tries to develop a big vision within each reader for the work that God has for your life, this does not always mean that you need to make dramatic, life changing moves. Sometimes the ordinary things that we do (mom duties of diaper changes and instilling the right values and faith in your child) can develop something extraordinary for God (the next Joshua). Here are some of my favorite phrases….which only cover the first 5 days in the book!
“If the size of the vision for your life isn’t intimidating to you, there’s a good chance it’s insulting to God.” “When you strip the biblical miracles of their spectacular special effects, a common plot point emerges: extraordinary moves of God begin with ordinary acts of obedience.” “All God needs is all you’ve got.” And I love this definition of the supernatural: “ What we call a miracle is really just the right combination of your ordinary ingredients and God’s extraordinary expertise. When God’s super collides with your natural, sparks will fly.”
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Blogging For Books program from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
Having being impressed with the book Sun Stand Still I was excited by the idea of a 40-day condensed devotional version of it.
Both books reflect on Joshua's audacious prayer asking God to freeze time so he and his Israelite army have more time to vanquish the Amorites. And God answers by doing just that.
Furtick believes we all should be living lives of audacious faith where prayers such as Joshua's are common practice and just as importantly we are stepping out in faith so that God can demonstrate His faithfulness to us.
This devotional is excellent. Each day's message is short featuring a passage of Scripture that encourages us to be faithful. Yes, God can be trusted. What I particularly love about Furtick's writing is that he is the master encourager (he'd be a great sports coach) to be able to motivate by demonstrating God's faithfulness and then equip the reader with the tools to utilise to step out in faith.
He also uses a lot of great soundbites that are short, sharp and memorable, such as:
- The proof of faith is the action it produces. - Faith not only prays. It also pursues. - Live a life that is explainable only by the existence of a God who is infinitely great.
Furtick shares a number of stories of his own journey in starting his church (which is quite a remarkable story) and this devotional includes some updates which weren't included in the book. Each day's lesson then ends with an accompanying action to pray.
If you're desiring something more for your life, I'd encourage you work through this devotional. You won't be disappointed. I expect I'll keep returning to it on a regular basis.
Hopefully, Steven Furtick is a name that you’re familiar with. NY Times Best-selling Author & lead pastor of Charlotte, NC’s Elevation Church are just 2 of the hats that he wears. I’ve been blessed enough to become familiar with his work & ‘Sun Stand Still’ is yet another example of his intense passion for the Kingdom of God. If the title sounds somewhat recognizable to you, that is because it is an Old Testament Bible reference. Joshua, battling Israel’s enemies, appealed to God to stop the sun & moon so that Israel could secure the victory. What a daring, faith-filled prayer! Perhaps, at one time or another, you wished you had THAT kind of faith. Wishing won’t help, but journeying with Pastor Furtick in this devotional just might. Praying the impossible is possible. Whether you’re looking for your major miracle or just want out-of-the-box faith, tis devotional is for you. Prepared in daily readings, each devotional contains a chunk of wisdom, God’s Word, a Re-tweet, & a prayer focus. Each will provide you will fuel for your day as you build your Spiritual muscles. Practical advice accompanied by encouragement allows readers to believe that the supernatural is not only possible, but possible for them. Without a doubt, this is one of the top devotionals that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. It isn’t the type that you read once & add to your bookshelf collection. Rather, you want to re-read excerpts or the whole devotional over again at the 40 day mark. More information is available through the publisher: www.waterbrookmultnomah.com I received an eBook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This devotional is great. It’s based on Furtick’s book of the same title. Each day's message is short featuring a passage of scripture that encourages us to be faithful, followed with a prayer focus. The book has dozens of short, yet powerful thoughts sprinkled throughout the book.
The author is excellent at encouraging, and it's demonstrated in this book. Not only does he motivate you to have more faith, he also equips you with the tools to step out on the Word of the Lord. I know you are supposed to spend 40 days reading it, but I enjoyed it so much that once I started reading it I finished it in a few days. It’s a devotional that you can turn to any day and received a blessing.
Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick, founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a 40-day devotional which attempts to activate faith. The book is not a traditional Christian devotional, as it aims to be more of an “experience” than a time of discipline. Each chapter focuses on an inspiring topic, with two-to-four pages of motivational writing, and a bible reference that correlates with the topic for the day. Most chapters revolve around a story of Furtick’s personal success.
Following the mentality of Furtick’s mega-church, this book aims at and succeeds in being an “experience.” This book contains many inspiring stories, well-crafted motivational rhetoric, and an ideology that any iGeneration American would enjoy reading about. You need not be worried Furtick will attempt to “preach” to you, or dwell too much on the harsh realities of sin and Hell, for those doctrines are non-existent in this devotional. If the Bible is too old and boring for you, then you’ll probably like Furtick’s ideas.
Here are some quotes from his book that stood out to me:
“God did not create you to fit in. He intends for you to stand out” (25).
“I hereby ordain you as a minister of the gospel to preach to yourself” (52).
“Adversity is inevitable. I’m simply saying that when the battle begins, you have two options. You can stand there and get beaten to a bloody pulp, abandon your faith, and curse the day you were born. Or you can seize the opportunity to experience God’s power and goodness in a new way, watching in awe as He fights for you. Throw the first punch” (114).
Although Furtick’s book might be called a devotional, it’s not devoted to learning more about the character of God; it’s a devotional dedicated to learning about what we can do through God’s power. It’s devoted to ourselves, our present fulfillment, and our future glory. If you’re into that, check out pages 117-118 in which Furtick lists the 12 “I Am’s” of humanity.
For those who like to focus on their own self, and see what God can do for them, go ahead and buy this book. But for those who wish to focus on God, and see what God has done for them, you’ll have to keep searching.

Really good devotion on the power of prayer, based on Joshua's prayer to stop the sun during battle, to achieve total victory for Israel. Good choices of verses to read each day. Lots of personal anecdotes, similar to his preaching style
One of the best books I've ever read. Every chapter has mantra that you can live by. His anologies are uncanny in their clear reflection of life. Would read a chapter every a.m., and I've begun each day like a dynamo. When I've gotten scared in my tasks. I've just told the sun to stand still. And, I'm happy to say that I've grown closer to God and, for the first time in my life I'm not afraid to give God the credit for my successes. I used to think people would think me odd were I to testify to the power of God in my life.
Don't miss this lovely book. It will challenge you to the greatness to which you are quite capable. Best Wishes!
Steven Furtick is the founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church, which has more than 10,000 people in weekly attendance. Elevation is one of the fastest growing Churches in America. Familiar with this church, its teachings and worship, I was truly excited to read and review the Sun Stand Still devotional by Furtick. It's subtitled A 40-Day Experience to Activate Your Faith. Let me just say, the book did not fail to activate my faith! From day one I found so many nuggets to share, I've been tweeting and sharing via texts to my friends quotes from this book like crazy. I couldn't wait to read the next day's devotional because I knew there was going to be a timely message in it for me. Have you read Jesus Calling? This book had the same effect on me as that book did. I'd open it up and sure enough on that day there was a message that I felt was written directly to me! The book gets its title from the Bible story about Joshua in Joshua 10 where he asks God to make the sun stand still just for a day so that he can accomplish all he needs to accomplish. And God did it! This story is used throughout the book to drive home the message that we serve a mighty God, the Creator of the universe, One who can answer our prayers. Even prayers to stop the sun from setting. He can move mountains. This book seriously reminded me that no matter what circumstances I go through, God is always with me. He wants us to pray ridiculous prayers that most people would scoff at because that's how He shows off. Furtick talks about the importance in having audacious faith and asking God to fulfill something huge in our lives because it shows God that we trust Him and that we know He's a BIG God. We don't want to insult Him with weak prayers. We don't want to pray the prayers of a beggar. We want to get down on our knees and pray prayers like juggernauts. (You'll have to read the book to know what he's talking about.) Don't miss out on this little nugget of goodness. Here are a few quotes that moved me: "Stop trying to have all the answers before launching out in faith." "Faith is not a coping mechanism. It's a weapon of mass destruction to win your spiritual war." "Sometimes God has to let your dream die so his vision for you can come alive." "You can't claim God's promises if you don't know God's promises. Saturate your mind with the scriptures." "You can't hope for the best if you're believing in the worst." "The greatest movement in the history of humanity sprang from the faith of audacious nobodies." I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.
I had already read the book "Sun Stand Still" and it changed my life towards believing that the impossible was possible through Jesus! Having daily highlights from the book, along with an accompanying passage of Scripture that allowed God to truly confirm it in my spirit, cemented the truths into my way of thinking even more! I feel so sure! The impossible IS possible! The time of God's favor and blessings is NOW! My only regret is that there weren't 365 days instead of 40... but then...maybe, I'll just start over. I can't hear these truths enough!!! 5 stars from me!
This is the first devotional I've ever done, and I really enjoyed it. It was a great opportunity to take a look at my current prayer life, scrap it, and build a new prayer life centered around who God is. It was also a great jump start to a new faith (because faith is my biggest struggle).
The Furticks are basically the Kardashians of Christianity. Please don't buy this, you'll just be contributing to the carbon footprint of a house that has seven bathrooms for five people. Now that's an offense against God's creation. Hopefully we don't all go extinct due to idiots like this.
