Forgotten Soldier #1

Treading Water

Rate this book
After devoting eighteen years of his life to the US Navy, Petty Officer First Class Shane Parker is struggling with the very real possibility of becoming unnecessary. If he doesn’t make Chief Petty Officer before his twenty—and it doesn’t seem likely that he will—he’ll be retired from active service and placed on the Fleet Reserve list until his mooring lines are officially cut forever. While it would all be very honorable and ceremonial, he simply wasn’t civilian material.

Before even swearing-in, Julian Brand knew he wasn’t cut out to be a soldier, but refusing wasn’t an option. Generations of Brand man made careers in the military and the expectation of every Brand son was to follow in those prestigious footsteps. Though the prospect of being rolled back hindered his every step, he survived Battle Stations and did his time. Six years out of uniform and Julian still struggles to find familial acceptance as he fights to live life on his terms.

On the surface, they couldn’t be more different, but when Jared Ramos calls, neither are capable of refusing. If they can find a way to work together, they might be able to save a friend and each other in the process.

Like many readers, the dream of being a writer has been with me a long time. After three decades of trying, I'd begun to doubt. Thanks to social media, I followed my favorite authors hoping to glean some words of wisdom as I pounded out half-formed ideas with alarming regularity. Two repetitive themes emerged: To be a great writer you must read a lot and your butt must be in the chair every day like it's a job. The more you write, the easier it will be to write and the better you will be at writing. I took that advice to heart and write every day. With three series in the works and counting, it's been amazing to have made this dream my reality.

I am a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics and happily ever after. I'm a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you'll find throughout my books.

Another good addition to this military series

There's a very important message in these books from Jessie G and that is that family are the people who love you and are cheerleaders for you, whether they're blood or not.

In this story, which has a bit of an odd beginning as it starts with a chapter of set up from two other character POVs, once things kick off, the reader is gifted with a tale about how just being visible as a friend can be so important to someone dealing with life changing circumstances.

Julian and Shane's fall into love centred around Sean, their mutual family connection. Julian's cousin, Shane's Navy colleague, it's Sean who anchors the events as he comes to terms with a freak accident which puts him in a wheelchair and facing a medical discharge.

The two men are almost direct opposites, Julian too emotionally giving for his own good, Shane so closed off he never lets go, but through their mutual love and desire to support Sean, they come to realise each offers the other what they've always been searching for.

This book is super sweet, it's also a good peek into the difficulties facing Armed Forces personnel when they leave service. And 10% of all profits are going to Gary Sinises' Foundation which helps veterans in a variety of ways.

I was so confused in the beginning. The book starts out with the POV's of Aiden and Jared. I really liked Aiden and his story seemed interesting, but when I got to chapter three the POV switched again to another character and I had to go and read the blurb. Turns out Aiden and Jared aren't the MC's, Shane and Julian are.

Although Shane and Julian's portion of the story starts off a bit awkward and rushed, once the author really got to the meat of their story and concentrated on them, they worked. The differences between their personalities complimented one another and they fit well together. They had great chemistry and it carried over into the bedroom. The sex scenes were passionate, as well as hot.

I loved the premise of the story. I loved that Sean could see that Shane and Julian, the two most important people in his life, were meant for one another, before they even met. Shane and Julian were both likable characters that you could really root for to get their HEA.

The writing is good, but for me Aiden, Jared and Sean's POV's were disruptive to the flow of the story. While, yes, these characters definitely added depth to the story, and Sean is instrumental in bringing Shane and Julian together, I didn't find a lot of information told on their POVs that couldn't have been given during a scene told from the POV of one of the main characters.

This is my first read by this author, but my co-bloggers have read other books by her that they've really enjoyed, so while this wasn't my favorite book ever, I'll definitely give the author's work another try, hopefully she'll give Aiden an story. He really intrigued me. Recommendable!

You won't forget these soldiers

It's no secret I'm a Jessie G. fangirl but she has written another story packing lots of emotional punch. Sean Murphy is badly injured during an accident on an aircraft carrier. Jared Ramos, who appeared in the Sizzling Miami series, has made Sean the first focus of his foundation for veterans. He brings Julian, Sean's cousin and Shane, his best friend, in to support and help Sean and those two also find a romantic connection between them.

There are three POV's in the story, from all three men. I appreciated that this was not a wallow in angst for the disabled veteran. Shane and Julian's bumpy road to love is a big part but it's also about learning how to best support Sean. Sean's thoughts, emotions and struggles are well conveyed and feel quite realistic for his situation. He's gets a bit of his own romance as well!

I'm also very happy to have supported Jessie's fundraising for the Gary Sinise Foundation. Apart from the purchase of the book, there's a fundraiser on JessieGBooks dot com. Highly recommended!

Great book with a promise of more to come (an audio review)

The audiobook begins with a prologue – a quick explanation of where the characters fit in other series written by the author. A quick reminder for fans, no big deal if this is your first foray into her work. Then there is a short story which starts this new series. In ‘Micah’s Soldier’, Garrison is coming home, not expecting anyone to greet him. He is facing what many soldiers do – no teary reunions, no families to embrace them – just an empty life to return to. Garrison isn’t expecting any welcome, but when it comes, he knows who to blame – or who to thank.

This short is heartwarming and dovetails nicely into the novel. In the first chapter of ‘Treading Water’ we meet Jared Ramos who is starting a charitable foundation to help vets coming back from overseas with physical and emotional problems.

This is a very timely discussion that needs to be had. For almost 20 years, the US and other coalition countries have been sending their very best soldiers – often young and naïve men and women – into horrific situations for which they are not prepared. Even those who manage to come home without physical injuries have psychological problems and this is often where the government fails these brave men and women. Jared, and his new assistant Aiden, aim to do everything they can to help. I didn’t read the blurb first and therefore was surprised when the story moved forward without these two, but I suspect their stories will be told later in the series.

Enter Sean. The young man, injured in a freak accident on an aircraft carrier, is now in the hospital. He’s going to survive, but his physical recovery is going to be tough and the results are uncertain. His cousin Julian, along with Sean’s friend Shane, race to Sean’s side. Sean and Julian are as close as brothers. Military service runs through the Brand family, but Julian wasn’t cut out for soldiering, instead is working hard to set-up his own Bed and Breakfast in Florida.

Shane has also been injured and is facing the precipitous end to his military career with two years left to go. Shane and Julian, in their concern for Sean, turn to each other for comfort. But with one man clearly destined for home & hearth and the other notorious for his one-night stands, how are they going to make it work? As well, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell might finally be history, but that doesn’t mean every gay officer has suddenly decided to come out.

This book challenges the reader to face the reality of what our soldiers face every day. We expect them to keep us safe, then we often fail to care for them when they come home. Having Sean as such a strong presence in the book helps bring that perspective into sharp focus. In fact, there are three alternative POV’s – Julian, Shane, and Sean. Although Sean isn’t part of the romance, his story is as important.

A perfect ending – with a few lovely surprises – again dovetails into the next story. Jared and Aiden bring another soldier out to stay with Julian and Shane. From the quick glimpse, it is going to be a heart-wrenching story and I can’t wait for it.

The book was great.

The audio recording is another issue altogether. The narrator, Casey Hunter, does a good job, but there are large pauses right in the middle of scenes. There are no POV changes or anything else to account for these weird pauses. Also, there is no pause between the chapters. The narrator says the last line of the one chapter, announces the next chapter, and begins the next chapter – all in one breath. It is jarring and irritating. Not enough to reduce the power of the story, but definitely enough to reduce the enjoyment. Andrew Reyna is listed prominently as the producer, so I’ll put the blame at his feet. I hope these issues are resolved by the next project.

This wonderful book is timely while not being preachy. Can’t wait for the next one.

Model looks like a young Colin Farrell (my opinion) and that's what initially grabbed my attention... I mean, how could he NOT? In the background, a man armed with a military weapon and geared for hazardous conditions is seen. Synopsis is intriguing and once again, the military theme pulls me in. Plus, being a #Charity book, I am more apt to read and/or support it.

> > Looking Deeper < <
POV ~> Multiple first-person POVs clearly defined, easy to follow. Not just primary character POVs, a few secondary characters share their POV as well.

Straight out of the gate, Jessie G writes a character that tugged at my heartstrings and made me want to champion him on to a HEA of his own, but NO... she's going to torture her readers and make them wait until book FIVE for him to get his story. *Grr, mock glare*
Shane Parker's longtime friend was injured on his Naval flight deck and it took a call from Jared Ramos at The Ramos Foundation to bring him and Sean's cousin, Julian, in and present them with the dire situation. The men must work together to save a man that has been more brother to them than anything or anyone else. Meanwhile, over a decade of matchmaking-in-progress on Sean's part laid the paving stones for Shane and Julian to feel immediately familiar with one another although they were, in fact, strangers. One man thinks himself incapable of love, while the other gives it with every breath he takes. Together, they could balance each other out if they'd only allow it to happen. Working together to help Sean heal, mentally and physically, is a primary objective for both of them and they make a great team.
There's a strong secondary cast. For a while it almost felt like it could become a male menage, only if Sean weren't straight. Esme, the foundation crew, a few medical staff and Naval officers, and scant family comprise most of the remaining cast. Most were quite enjoyable, those that were not only added to the overall story. Chemistry between the leads was natural feeling and perfectly imperfect. The dialogue was amazing. There's a fairly busy plot and only about half of it pertains to them, as a couple or trying to build a relationship. The rest actually helps build the foundation for the series, introducing players that will be key to moving forward.
There were not a lot of conflicts between the two, they were very open and honest with good communication. Only getting too far inside their own heads at times caused unwarranted roadblocks, but even during those times, things were resolved rather quickly and intuitively. The predictability was low and the conclusion provides TWO implied HEAs and, assumably, a peek into the next mission/case.
This is a series I'll be watching for and keeping up with, for sure. The characters are smart and strong, the plots are well written and enjoyable. I look forward to reading more from this author.

My Review ~

Treading Water is the second book in the Forgotten Soldier series. The first book was a short story that featured Micah and Garrison and introduced The Ramos Foundation as the continuing thread through the series.

Now I absolutely love the Sizzling Miami series so was excited when I had the opportunity to read and review this new series by her.

Treading Water is Julian and Shane's story. Here are two men tossed together to help give their friend and cousin a support system after an accident leaves Sean severely injured. Jared Ramos approaches Julian and Shane after finding out they are both listed as Sean's medical decision makers but were not contacted after he was injured. Jared wants the two of them to go in there and give Jared the support he needs to fight back and want to recover from his injuries. This throws these two men together after years of Sean trying to get them together and almost forces them to realize that Sean may have been onto something with pushing them toward each other.

I really enjoyed this story, and the characters, both main and secondary. The whole concept of the Ramos Foundation and helping soldiers may not be new but the idea behind this one is solid and well developed. Of course the characters are solid, well-written, multi-faceted characters who experience all sorts of emotions and growth through out the story. I particularly liked Julian, but have to admit him with Shane, as they fall into a relationship is all sorts of sweet and adorable. There are many deeper moments with the characters, centering both around their relationship and also around making Sean better.

The pacing of the story kept me hooked into the story until I finished it, so for me this was a one sitting type of book. Which just makes me want the next one in the series...and I'm hoping we see more of Jared and Aidan.. hopefully in their own book? *hopes*

This is going to be another highly addictive, thoroughly enjoyable series from this author. I imagine that she has at least a few books planned to continue it because I can see a LOT of potential storylines just from this second book. I highly recommend this one to pick up and enjoy...and hopefully enjoy again as a favorite re-read.

I was counting down the days until this book was released and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Just like I thought, Jessie certainly didn't disappoint!

Jared Ramos has started a charity, The Ramos Foundation that helps soldiers in need. When he comes across Sean, a man involved in a two- seater plane crash causing him to be trapped between cargo containers on the deck of an aircraft carrier. The crash left him partially paralyzed. Jared brings together Shane, Sean's best friend who was back home recovering from a torn rotator cuff and hadn't heard of the accident and Julian, Sean's cousin. Julian's parents had been taking care of Sean but refused to call Julian, whom they haven't spoken to in ages because of his sexual preference.

Once Shane and Julian are on board all the necessary steps are made to help Sean through recovery. Julian owns a B&B and renovates his living space to accommodate Sean. As the two navigate a plan for recovery with Sean they are also dancing around a growing attraction to each other, but Shane isn't out work and doesn't really have any plans to be. Julian doesn't want to be his dirty little secret, but can he walk away from the man?

This story blew me away. I loved that we got the POV of all three men. It made Sean's struggle with recovery that much more realistic. To see that it wasn't all sunshine and roses, it was days of depression and wanting to give up and pushing through that to find the new normal.

The relationship between Shane and Julian developed so organically, it never felt forced. It was so natural, I think it even snuck up on Shane. Julian never pressed for more, but at the same time he never lost sight of what he wanted and needed and Shane was able to give him that.

The secondary characters were an added bonus. Julian's parents were written with just enough snark and religious undertone that I couldn't hate them for their misguided opinions. I certainly didn't like them, but Jessie didn't make me hate them. Esme was another surprise, so colorful and full of life. I was so happy to see the part she played in Sean's recovery.

The moral of the story is, if you haven't read the book yet stop what you're doing and read it. You won't be disappointed.

Treading Water is book 2 in the Forgotten Soldier series and I loved this book. I loved Micah's story, but I loved Sean, Shane and Julian's even more.

When Sean is injured in a freak accident on a naval ship, Jared Ramos and the Ramos Foundation arrange for Sean's closest people to be there for him. Shane, Sean's best friend and fellow soldier, and Julian, Sean's cousin and closest relative immediately drop everything to be with Sean in the hospital in Jacksonville until he can be transferred to a rehab facility. Shane and Julian are there for each other as they carry the burden of both being there for Shane. The love story that grows between Shane and Sean is heartfelt, slow, endearing, at times heartbreaking, but so genuine that I felt like I was there watching every moment.

Sean's story was written with such authenticity from the author that he could have been any soldier that's been injured in real life. I've read hundreds of stories of soldiers trying to put their lives back together after a life altering injury and Sean's was very accurate. He had to learn to cope with his new disability, while relying on Shane and Julian - something no soldier wants to do, they're built to have people rely on them not vice versa. Sean used sarcasm and humor as coping mechanisms to hide the fear and depression he went through. Sean's ending is so amazingly wonderful that I went back and reread it.

There are a host of characters in this book that also appeared in the last book a some from Jessie's other series. I love repeating characters. I love that we already know them and love them. I love that we know they'll do anything that needs to be done with no questions asked.

The author, Jessie G. (@JessieGBooks) is a wonderful person with huge heart (I know this because I am lucky enough to call her a friend) and a portion of the proceeds from this book are being donated to the Gary Sinise Foundation. Please read this wonderful book in an amazing series, post your review and spread the word to continue to help people.

Jessie set high expectations for this series with the introduction of not only Jared in the Sizzling Miami series but of Micah and Garrison in Micah’s Soldier. While the issues conquered in this story are really heavy, the story is filled with love, hope and support.

And as always she slightly teases us with a couple of characters that are only supporting cast in this book.

There are really 3 main characters in this story and I hope we see them throughout the rest of the series. However, I’m going to say it now…Shane is my favorite. He’s an enigma with his alpha male protective/possessive side coupled with his extremely vulnerable side. He suffered a tragedy in his youth and his only real family was his brothers-in-arms. His tough façade hid his desire to be appreciated and loved which he desperately needs but refuses to show. He’s the perfect balance for Julian and with Julian is exactly what Sean needs in his recovery.

Julian also shows two very different sides – he wears his emotions on his sleeve but will absolutely protect and help those he loves. His parents are crap yet he’s finding his own family his own way and that makes it that much better for him. His ability to embrace and show his emotions is the exact thing Shane needs to let down his guard and start really living. I love them together!

Sean was up and down through is recovery which is to be expected. He was a genuine character that you felt every emotion with and he’ll be a great role model for future soldiers he encounters. He and Esme are quite feisty and entertaining as hell together.

The stage is partially set for the next book and I’m looking forward to finding out who else might be a part of that story. The writing is as good as always with Jessie and I can’t wait for the rest of this series!

What can I say about Jessie G's books? She truly puts her heart into her books. I walk away smarter, and having truly felt what these men feel, and you can't say that about all authors, or their books.
Treading Water is a book I waited a long time for. I loved Micah's Soldier even though it was a short story. Jessie really touched on the needs of a soldier, and those that are left behind, even with such a short story, so I was anxious to see what she would do with a full story with soldiers, and she didn't disappoint.
I loved that this book hit from many different aspects. A former soldier who was there only because he felt he had to be, an active duty soldier in the closet and not looking for anything permanent, and a soldier who needed all the help, love and support he could get.
Having this story told from all three points of view (it isn't a threesome) allows the reader to see injuries can affect everyone, not just the soldier who feels the physical pain. I really enjoyed this unique aspect of the story. Often when a book is told from more than one POV it is only those involved in the direct story romance, and that wasn't the case. I enjoyed that creativity.
Most of all though, I appreciated Julian's love for these two men. He loved his cousin enough to open his home (and business) to help him heal physically and emotionally. He also loved Shane enough to not push him further than he could handle, allowing Shane to find his way to the love that they found through friendship and support.
Shane was supportive of Julian, as he was challenged with trying to keep his spirits up when it seemed as if there wasn't hope in that moment.
When I am done with a Jessie G book, I never fail to feel like I've watched these men grow and change, in themselves and their love, and Treading Water is no exception.
Great job!

I read Micah's Soldier at the tail end of 2015. About it I said, "Not particularly deep, but well developed for something so short. It's also very sweet." So when I saw an audio version of the sequel available I was happy to give it a go.

I had a mixed experience with Treading Water. I really thought Shane and Julian were a cute couple and I liked the way their relationship progressed. I thought the writing was pretty good and I liked that injured soldiers were shown to have lives even after injury. This was all good.

But I struggled with having five first person POVs and with Shawn as a character. (Well, I struggled keeping Shawn and Shane straight in general. Why are the names so similar?) But I had some difficulty because his injury is what holds the whole book together; it's the reason Shane and Julian meet at all and why they spend time together. But Since Shane and Julian are the main characters, it left Shawn and his traumatic injury feeling a bit like a storytelling prop.

About the narrator...I hate to say it, but he didn't do a very good job. (Though it did improve as the book went on.) His voice was easy to listen to, but the timing was off in so many ways. There were extra long pauses where you wouldn't expect them, like in the middle of a sentence, and almost no pauses where you would, like between chapters. There were times I was honestly left confused about who was saying what or that we'd moved on to a new character or section. I don't know how audiobooks are produced. Maybe this should be put on the shoulders of the producer, not the narrator. Because, as I said, his voice and intonations was fine. But the timing issues definitely effected my listening experience.

All in all, I'd be willing to read more by Jessie G. and that's really what I judge an author by in the end.

Treading Water is book 2 in the Forgotten Soldier series by Jessie G., while it can be read as a standalone, Micah and Garrison, who featured in the first book appear in this one as well. I suspect it might be best if you read both in order, even if I didn't really feel lost for not having read Micah's Soldier.

I loved Jared and Aiden and I was a bit disappointed (okay, a lot disappointed) when I realized this wasn't their story. You see, I'm not overly fond of multiple POVs, although I do agree that it works well for some books. In this case, since the book starts with these two men that I wanted to read more about, I was confused when we got to Shane, Sean and Julian’s points of view. Even if it wasn’t what I expected, it’s a testament to Jessie G.’s talent that I became so invested in a pair of characters I just read a couple of chapters about. Now I’ll just have to wait (im)patiently for their book.

I liked Shane and Julian. They were committed to helping Sean in any way they could and I really enjoyed seeing them go from friends to lovers with relative ease, even if there were some moments in which I wanted to shake Shane. They were a tad awkward at first, but once they got past some minor issues, their relationship blossomed quite nicely and they fit well together.

Sean was great, too, it was awesome seeing him work to become as independent as he could be with the type of injury he sustained, and of course, get his own HEA.

Overall, while not my favorite book by this author, Treading Water was a pretty good read, enjoyable and poignant. I’m very interested in reading more books in the series, especially Jared and Aiden’s.

This is the second but first full novel in the new series Forgotten Soldier (the first book is a free short story called Micha’s Soldier)

Shane and Julian are brought together at The Ramos Foundation by Jared Ramos who support and care for military personnel. Sean who is Julian’s cousin and served under Shane has had a serious accident which ends up with him in a military hospital and alone for the past few weeks. Once Shane and Julian are made aware they build a dynamic duo unit to help Sean push for recovery and not fall into a pit of despair.

Sean was always a Jack the lad type of character and has surreptitiously in the past tried to set up his cousin and best friend. Now that Shane and Julian are in close proximity and the sparks are flying it looks like Sean will get his wish.

The chemistry and passion flowed easily between the two men. I loved Shane’s dominant ways but Julian wasn’t such a push over. There were some conflict but only in their own heads and once they fought through all the muddy waters they were free to grasp what they wanted.

There were characters from another series by this author and for me there were too many characters at the beginning. I would have much rather focused on Jared and the men of the foundation (an interesting pairing happening there for sure) I also would have chosen a different name for Sean as when Shane and Sean were talking it was easy to mix up their similar names!

Overall a sexy romantic read with sufficient depth and sub plot to give an eventful and engaging read. I look forward to the next book. Four stars.

This is hard. There was a lot to like about this story, but also a lot of things that really didn't work for me at all.

First of all, the beginning. The first couple of chapters are from the point of view of Jared Ramos and his assistant Aidan - and I got quite invested in them. I wanted more. Except, it turned out, they were not our MCs and when Shane and Julian were introduced, Jared and Aidan was left behind. I felt cheated and very unsatisfied, because I really didn't care about Shane and Julian at first - I wanted the other story!

Shane and Julian's story was ok, in the end, but it felt a bit forced to me. I never really saw them as a couple. They were more like satellites revolving around Shaun and his injury, with their own back stories only superficially touched upon, which was a shame, because there was quite a lot of meat on those bones, I just never felt that we got to see the good bits. And the head hopping was driving me a little bit crazy. For such a short story there was just too many people and relationships being introduced.

Also, Shane's coming out felt weirdly forced and unrealistic. I never really bought that part of it either. However, the writing and story was engaging enough that I might give this series another try when Aidan's story is released.

Lastly, I listened to the audiobook of this story and the narrator drove me up the wall - which may also have affected my experience badly! He had the weirdest longest completely unmotivated pauses and half the time I had absolutely no idea which of the characters were speaking what sentence. He also had bouts where he was doing a great job, but the times when he wasn't overshadowed the good bits.

In this audiobook you get the short story, Micah’s Soldier and Treading Water. Micah’s Soldier is a lovely homecoming story that introduces us to the conception of helping injured and returning soldiers. For a short story there is a lot of emotions. I felt Garrison’s loneliness coming through when he thought no one would be there to meet him on his return. My heart went out to Micah still looking out for Garrison even though he had pushed him away. Very enjoyable narration bringing these two characters to life for me.
The second story is about the start of the Ramos Foundation whose aim is to help the forgotten soldiers. The start of the story focuses on Jared Ramos and his assistant Aiden. Together they are getting the Ramos foundation up and running. The story then switches to their first case. Sean who was injured during an accident on an aircraft carrier. The foundation call Sean’s cousin Julien and friend Shane to help his recovery. As much as I wanted to I didn’t quite feel the relationship between Julien and Shane. They were together a lot because of Sean but I didn’t feel the spark between them. Maybe it was because I was getting confused during the story between Shane and Sean. Their names sounded similar to me listening to the narration and I got them muddled at times. Other listeners might not find it a problem. I’ve not listened to anything by Casey Hunter before. I liked the way he approached the story. I had a good sense of the characters and their emotions so I’ll look out for him again.

I was totally blown away by Book 2 of the Forgotten Soldier series, TREADING WATER which I just finished listening to on Audible. This was an amazing journey that was years in the making. We recently celebrated Veterans Day and this book is a wonderful tribute to them. There's so much about this story that kept me reading, despite having to stop write down the names of the main characters that were similar so I could keep track of their relationships. Sometimes I would rewind to relisten to a humorous moment.
Jessie G appears to be very well versed veteran's issues, so much so that she offered a realistic glimpse into the life of current Naval seamen and veterans, Marines, and the men organization that want to help them. Jessie captures the camaraderie, the fraternal feelings, the extremely close friendships and unfortunately homophobia along with closeted servicemen.
How does one go about assisting a stubborn headstrong injured veteran? A small great organization, his best friend who's also a fellow Naval seaman, and his younger cousin, a sensitive young man who was a forced military participant. How difficult it is for a wounded military man to accept a different physical reality. How agonizing mentally and physically it is to attempt to heal, reconcile, and perform therapeutic intervention. During the long process of recovery a romance that's been years in the making finally blossoms.
At the end of the 2nd Book is a preview of the 3rd in the series... I am so excited!!

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words review

From that review: " After some initial confusion about the opening, I found Treading Water (Forgotten Soldier #2) by Jessie G to be a heartwarming and wonderful story about love, recovery and family.  I haven't read the first story so the beginning pages about Jared, Aiden and The Ramos Foundation threw me.  At first I thought I'd fallen into the wrong story and had to read the blurb again to remember who I was supposed to be reading about.  But once that initial setup about the foundation was laid, I settled into the story of Julian Brand, Petty Officer First Class Shane Parker and Julian's cousin Sean, who's been severely injured in a naval carrier accident.  Sean, who is het btw, is a huge part of this story.  He is the glue that brings the two men together in the first place and his love for them as his brothers and family as well as theirs for him makes such an incredible foundation for this story that everything else that follows seems right and happily complete."

I wanted to like this book more than I did and I think the way it started had a lot to do with it. At the beginning we focused on the founder of a foundation to help wounded vets return to civilian life. We had initially met the guy in "Micah, Forgotten Solder #1." Also entering the picture is a young man that just showed up to help the founder get his office set up and become his assistant to answer phones, etc. Well, I and I think anyone else reading this book would presume we now had our MC's.

It got interesting as we found out that the young assistant couldn't qualify for the military because he suffered from testicular cancer in the past and the effects of treating that disease had left him partially blind and he would be totally blind in 5 years. Oh my god! Talk about tugging the heartstrings! But, then we found out that these weren't the MC's and they almost totally disappeared from the story. Of course, as I'm reading the book, the poor blind kid is all I could think about (will he find love? how's his sight doing right now? will some big, hunky PTSD suffering guy take the kid under his wing and be cured of his PTDS?). So that really took away from an okay story about a paraplegic vet and his attempts at coping with his new life. Hope we get the blind kid back sometime.

This is my review of the audiobook, which includes the first two books in Jessie G's Forgotten Soldier series, and they are both wonderful. The stories are tied together by their involvement with a new foundation set up by Jared Ramos and friends. The foundation was set up in order to provide for the needs of military members who are not fully helped through normal channels.
First is the short story, Micah's Soldier. We meet Marine Garrison, who is returning from his final deployment with expectations of solitude and loneliness since he pushed his loving boyfriend Micah out of his life years ago. Micah, meanwhile, has kept up with the man he still adores and has a surprise planned for Garrison.
The second story, Treading Water, revolves around Sean and Shane, who became like family in the Navy, and Sean's cousin Julian. Sean has been seriously injured, and Shane and Julian come together to help him heal and learn to live in his new situation. While pulling together to provide support for Sean, the other men begin to fall in love. This is a sweet and sometimes heartbreaking story about the growth of all three men.
The writing is strong, the characters are believable and honorable, and the narration just adds to the the greatness of the stories. This is excellence!

👏FABULOUS! 🌟 DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT!👏

😀 Jessie G., you did it again! TREADING WATER is another extremely well-written book that shares an absolutely wonderful story revolving around incredible characters that readers will love.
❤❤❤
👍 I have been waiting for more than a year to read this second book of the FORGOTTEN SOLDIER series.
(My interest in this series was completely captured after reading Book 1 which was a short story prequel.
Book 1 doesn't have to be read prior to Book 2 because TREADING WATER can definitely be read as a standalone, but MICAH'S SOLDIER is a truly great short story and is good way to begin reading this series.) I didn't enjoy having to wait so long for the second book to be released -- but I can state without any hesitation that this book was DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT!
📚 Jessie G. is a gifted author. Readers become emotionally-involved with the characters and the events in their lives while reading the well-developed storylines created by this talented writer.
🌠I hope Book 3 will be completed and available soon!

Loved this book so much!! An outstanding story with a tragic accident, crazy religious nutjobs, two cousins who are closer than brothers and a closeted military man. Seriously, what's not to love?? I love it when a book has a friends to lovers story. Shane was everything I love in Jessie's characters. He reminds me of Chris from her Sizzling Miami series, damaged but not broken. I wanted him to get his HEA, I needed it as much as he did, lol.
The chemistry between Shane and Julian heats up from the beginning and only gets hotter. I loved the interactions between Jared and Aiden, oh boy, I can't wait for that book.
Now to Sean, Julian's cousin, he was such a great character and the end of the book with that little tidbit JG snuck in there. So wonderful :)

Passion, family loyalty and a love story between two unlikely men. Shane and Julian are both military men with very different backgrounds, but a call for help from a friend and family member bring these two unlikely lovers together. In helping their friend with his recovery they learn to lean on each other and heal the hurt from their pasts... the chemistry with these two is a slow burn but together they ignite a fire that burns brightly lighting up both their futures! I look forward to reading more of this series!!

Now, for Treading Water. You might find yourself wondering why the beginning of the story seems to focus on Jared and Aidan but there is a reason behind this (at least I think so). This lays the foundation on why this case is so important to everyone. Shane and Julian will instantly dig their way under your skin and you will be cheering and crying for them. Key West is described so well that you will swear the sand is between your toes. And can I just say how much Sean touched me?

Now, is book 3 ready? Please!!!!

Wonderful story about wounded warriors

Sean is, in the main, our wounded warrior. His support team is Julian, Sean's cousin, and Shane, his best friend and Naval bud. Shane is recovering from injury. Sean has been hoping for some time now that Shane and Julian would see that they would be very good for each other, lovers and more perhaps. As they help Sean in his recovery from a horrific aircraft carrier accident, they find themselves. And, Sean finds love, too. Very uplifting story.

Definitely a Good Read

Treading Water was a look behind a group of friends trying to help injured soldiers returning from the war. The hard work and tears they put into helping their friend Sean, who had a spinal injury was really a growing experience for all of them. I really liked reading this book, it showed me how little I really know about the wounded soldiers coming home and all the different problems they have. Definitely a good read.

This is very well written. Liked the story! And the characters as well. Only thing is the multiple POV kind of distracted from the main characters. It got me a bit confused as to what exactly was super important. Overall another good book by Jessie G :)

I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

Sweet and low angst

I love Jessie 's books. This series is bittersweet but less angsty than the sizzling Miami series. It's going to be a great series with great men to get to know and root for their hea.
