We are Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti, sisters and best selling co-authors of all things dark romance - fantasy and contemporary, M/F and RHs, there’s something for everyone, as long as you love characters who will break your heart, stomp on it and laugh over the pieces before putting them all back together in the end. We live in the South East of England, kinda near London but far enough out to be able to look at fields all wistfully and shit if the mood takes us. We work together from our countryside office through the week, writing down most of the madness that exists in our heads on paper, so that you can come and escape to our imaginary worlds for a little bit too. We don’t shy away from twisted cliffhangers, and love an Alpha asshole, but our leading women are of the badass, take no shit lying down variety, so it’s always a rollercoaster of a ride. We can’t wait for you to buckle up with us!
What a conclusion! The whole last third of this book had me seriously stressing out about who might live, who might die, and just overall how it would all end.
But yeah, this was a fun series to read. Every time I get my hands on another book in the series it goes by quickly with no shortage of action and obstacles with an undercurrent of heart igniting the characters. The world building has been so different and constantly evolving as well as the wide cast of characters. Fast paced and exciting we finally come full circle as Maya returns to the city behind The Wall and undergoes her quest to unleash the truth upon the people.
If you’re a fan of YA Dystopian books then you might want to consider give the Cage of Lies saga a try. And Valenti has just released the first book in a prequel series called Tainted Earth which shows the world at ground zero filled with all the chaos and confusion that shattered the world to begin with.
Having been waiting avidly since the end of the last book, I was so excited when I was offered the opportunity to receive an ARC of Freed – and it was definitely worth the wait. It took me a while to get back into the world, as its been a while since I finished the last one, but once I’d reacquainted myself with it, I raced through it just as quickly as I had the previous installments, even going as far as reading it on my lunchbreak!
It was wonderful to have the opportunity to see more of the city – it’s been integral to the story throughout the series, but we only really got to see it in detail at the start of the first book, so I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about how it worked, especially now that Maya has an Outsider’s view, and so both its flaws and its benefits were highlighted more clearly, which I think made for a far more interesting dynamic. I also loved the character development that occurred throughout the book – although it was slow, it was definitely there, and I think how far the characters have come emotionally is particularly evident in this book when compared to the last ones, where, particularly at the beginning, the most obvious changes were physical – Maya and Taylor’s ability to survive in the wild was the biggest development earlier on, whereas a much larger focus of this book was their ability to deal with their’s and other’s emotions. I particularly enjoyed Coal’s character arc towards the end, as well as his relationship with Taylor. My only criticism here was that the less central members of the group were almost non-existent towards the start of the book – Blane, Garrett, and Luca seemed a little superfluous to the plot at first, with only the occasional line to remind us that they were still around. Although this definitely sorted itself out later on, I would have liked to have maybe seen more of them earlier on as well.
My only other criticism was how little the Creepers featured. Although the book was set in the City, and so was effectively in an entirely different world, they’ve been such a key antagonist in the series thus far and I would have liked to see them play a bigger role in the final book as well.
Overall though, I think that Freed is an excellent ending to the series, and does a wonderful job at wrapping up all of the key plotlines in a satisfying way. While it’s not my favourite of the bunch, it still had all of the pace and excitement that we’ve come to expect. All of the characters have come a long way, and I would love to see where their adventures take them next!

*I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*
This book was such an intense read. I have been pretty invested in this series from the beginning and I eagerly wanted to know how everything finally boiled down in the end with the stake so huge. Although there were ups and downs, this book definitely lived up to my expectations.
*Possible spoilers from previous books in this series.*
Maya and her friends have finally breached the city but only she manages to escape whereas all the others are captured. With only a little help, she now has to take the next step in order to save the people she came to rescue in the first place along with her friends. But when things become more and more complicated with each step, what will Maya finally do?
The plot of this book was filled with action and one or the other thing kept happening which kept my interest throughout the book. After so many plans, Maya and the others finally decide to execute the rescue mission and tell the city about the world beyond the wall and to eradicate the lies that their leaders have spread through years. From the very first page, I was on the edge, the suspense was well maintained. Though with the help of Livi, her task was made pretty easy which seemed a little unrealistic since the City had such a tight security but she still manages to carry on her plan for most of the part without any significant hurdle along the way.
I loved the variety of characters. The gang was back to execute their mission and although the characters had their flaws but they were layered. We also got to see another side of Crystal which I liked. I seriously wanted a bit more of friendship between Taylor and Coal, I mean it's been so long, they should have come to a truce since the feelings began to change (in a good way). Coal and Maya were awesome together, as usual, they made a hell of a team. Maya's unexpected news was a big surprise but a part of it felt unrealistic too because before she realised the truth, she hadn't felt any difference but after learning the truth things got different, it was a bit weird but I didn't mind it that much. I also wanted mooore of Blane and Luca!! Only one chapter wasn't enough.
Overall, Free was an interesting read. The plot was executed neatly and the characters kept the journey interesting. I enjoyed the romance between Coal and Maya and I loved how Coal didn't back away when he learnt Maya's truth. The ending felt a little rushed, after such a big build up, I wanted to know a bit more about how things were being handled. Anyway, the writing was smooth and easy to read and it was fast paced throughout the book.
Awesome conclusion to an awesome series! Maya and her new family of outsiders have finally managed a way back into the city that lied to her her entire life - their goal to free the citizens of the oppression they have been forced to unknowingly endure.
Nonstop action again and the stakes couldn’t get any higher. With so much to lose, it will take a lot to get their message across to the population and a miracle to have the population believe the message!
I love all the good characters in this series and hate all the bad ones! They are so strong and the storyline is rich with purpose and content. If you like the Maze Runner, Divergent, or the Hunger Games series, the you’ll absolutely love this series! I got it in a boxed set and read them one after the other back to back! Was difficult putting the books down !!! One very talented author here!!!
I really enjoyed this series. It’s very good-the characters are constantly battling something or other. It’s predictable in pairing up characters and a drawn out love triangle. But it’s still enjoyable. The only thing that drove me nuts was the repeated use of the word snarl. It’s used to describe a way of speaking from many characters. They all snarl when they speak in anger. Maya snarls, Alicia snarls, Coal snarls. Every single character snarl speaks at some point. Maybe they could growl once in a while instead or glower.
The series as a whole is written in the perfect way. All the action and fight scenes as well as the emotional and true moments were not rushed which really allowed you to become thoroughly engrossed in the characters and stories. I would highly suggest this series to everyone.
I really Loved this series! I would recommend it to anyone looking for action and some sweet, clean, romance. The story keeps you engaged and rushing to download the next book.
This whole series has been an experience and I loved every page i have to go back and write reviews on all of them because I couldn't take a break from reading them all earlier!!
I cannot believe its over :( I sure hope SV makes a few post-freedom novellas because I am not ready to leave this world! Great book from a great author!
The action in this series just never stops!! I can't put these books down!! I do hope there is a next book to find out what happens now that they are free and heading west!
