*Please note this book is a spinoff of The Warrior Series, which was a young adult post-apocalyptic romance series. Deacon is NOT young adult. This is a book with adult content. You do not need to read The Warrior series to enjoy this book. The characters have aged and things have changed….in the most interesting ways.*
Deacon: A Dystopian Paranormal Urban Fantasy Romance (Warrior World Book 1) Kindle Edition by Rebecca Royce I was graciously given a free copy via the author and am submitting an honest review.
Wow, just wow! I am deeply in love with Deacon! He is a character I am unlikely to forget, ever. A kind compassionate man, in a less than wonderful world stocked full of Vampires and Werewolves, far into in the future. Like the best of the damaged hero trope, any woman want to wrap him up and take care of him. And Ms. Royce fleshes him out completely. As she does the love his life, Lydia.
The writing itself is delicious, you want to roll in Deacon's words as he tells his story. I've read a large number of Ms. Royce's work and every character has his or her own voice, but none so much as Deacon. And you can feel it in his literary voice – the way it evolves from having few words to say to the end where he is a confident man looking forward to his changed life.
It is also nice to see a romance from the males point of view entirely. Many other writers have tried it, some have succeeded, but not to this extent. Royce never once breaks character, never once!
This is my first visit to this world but it is richly dark and peopled with characters who neither perfectly good to horribly bad – except the monsters. They are evil and completely so. They rule the night and our Deacon must fight them in order to keep the tent city of Genesis, and its residents, safe.
There are a few sweet and passionate love scenes that sent my pulse races and my drool a flowin' in jealousy. They were that real and well done!
Deacon was born into a harsh and unforgiving world. Rescued from that fate, he tried his hardest to begin again in a world he didn't understand. First, his love for his best friend wasn't returned and then a horrible mistake that causes the death of a loved one makes him leave this new world behind as well. He and Micah set out into the unknown, each escaping their own demons. What they find though changes everything.
First let me say that I did not read the Warrior Series so all these characters are completely new to me. I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything though. Their past that plays a part in this book was described well enough for me to grasp it all.
This book was written completely in Deacon's POV which was different for me. I don't know if any of Rebecca's other books are that way, as I have not read them all, but I really enjoyed this POV. Even though there was a female main character, I didn't miss anything not having her POV as well.
I really really enjoyed this book. I think the story line was very interesting and held my attention from the beginning. You know something is going on, you just can't figure out what it is yet. I didn't figure things out before the played out in the book which is always a plus for me with as much as I read. I hate figuring out what's going to happen way before it ever does. Deacon starts out as a very insecure boy and I loved watching him grow into the man he becomes. Not only was I hooked by Deacon and his story but I can't wait to read the stories of the other characters as well. Well done Rebecca. Well done!
Warriors, vampires and werewolves oh my!! A little bit of everything in this story. If you read all about Rachel Clancy, you won't be dissapointed with this continuation in the same world.
Deacon and Micah are out on their own away from the community of Genesis. After all the tragedy that struck Genesis and his crush falling in love with another from her past. Deacon needed to get out and away quickly befire he does something stupid. Their journey will take them away from their now comfy life to a small town that is just down right weird in their book. The men are gone and no one seems to care... They act like its a normal thing in their book. But why do they want them to stay?
Deacon is the first book in Rebecca Royce's Warrior World, a spinoff of her Warrior series starring the incomparable Rachel Clancy. For those of you who read the series, you are familiar with Deacon, part scoundrel, part hero. If you haven't read the Warrior series, you are missing a rich backstory, however you can read it as a standalone. Deacon was born into a nightmare world, one where he was created only to service vampires. He was saved by Rachel who became his best friend. Convinced that he loved her, he was heartbroken when she chose another. He was also being consumed with guilt over the death of a friend. It all became too much, so he decided to leave their living habitat Genesis. With Micah Lyons, another Warrior he set off on an adventure to find what else the world had to offer and maybe find redemption along the way. Just two weeks outside of Genesis, he finds his reason, his way, his future.
Deacon and Micah come to the rescue of a young lady, Lydia and her small brother against werewolves. They are hailed as heroes when they return them to their home, an actual town. But this town has secrets, shameful and deadly. There's action, danger, suspense, mystery, friendship, forgiveness, and love.
This is a worthy successor to one of my favorite series. It's a great story with incredible characters, but it's so much more. It's a journey to find oneself; personal discovery and growth. It's a fight for survival against the monsters, but also an internal struggle. Deacon is so hard on himself. He has never been able to judge his own value and is the first to blame himself whenever anything goes wrong. He houses so much pain inside himself. This journey allows him to come into his own, become the man we all knew him to be. He's faced with challenges of many types and rises to the occasion.
No one creates better characters than Rebecca Royce. I think she's brilliant. Her characters are so complex, perfect yet flawed; so, so vulnerable. The appearance of other Genesis inhabitants was appreciated. I love the interwoven story showcasing loyalty and love. I can never get enough of this new world. The ending gives us a glimpse into the future and it's fascinating. It's also Micah's story, one I have been waiting for. I can't wait.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this story since it was a spin-off of a 5 book Young Adult series by the author. I don’t really care for YA novels, even paranormal ones, since the characters are just too young for me personally. Deacon Evans is the lead in this book and I have to admit, that at 20 years of age, I really had my doubts. It is also told totally from his point of view, not my favorite type of storytelling, but it worked for this story. Usually Rebecca tells her stories from the females POV, so this was a very interesting change.
This can be read as a stand alone since the author does a fairly good job of bringing the reader up to date of the previous happenings in this world. I haven’t read the other series and really think it would bring an added richness and depth to this one if I knew more about the post-Apocalyptic world the characters were living in, as well as the routinely mentioned ‘Before Times.’ I could follow along easily enough after awhile, but nothing beats knowing all the details in a complex world like the one Rebecca created.
After awhile I got over the fact that Deacon was so young and really became immersed in his and Lydia’s story. Neither were perfect people and it was their flaws that made them more believable as a couple. They were perfect for each other and even the sex scenes had a sweet type of innocence about them since they were both virgins.
At the end. the story jumps ahead ten years, and gives enough of a teaser about other characters who will have their stories told, that I really am looking forward to reading more about this world. That actually surprised me since I really wasn’t sure while reading the first several chapters, if starting a book in the middle of a previously told storyline would work for me. But it did and now I am off to start reading Micah’s story!
Deacon is the first in a new series called Warrior World series which is a spin off of the Warrior series which was YA and followed Rachael Clancy, and Deacon was one of the characters. And is New Adult. And while this is a continuation of the Warrior series it can be read standalone as the world building is well set up. But it is probably more enjoyable to get more backstory by reading the Warrior series first but not necessary.
In series where one of guys gets their story it's quite often in 3rd person, or the guys story but from the female MCs perspective. Deacon is different because its in first person and it's from his perspective! A real breath of fresh air. And I love that he's gotten a story because the events in the last stages of The Warrior were completely heartbreaking and things weren't completely settled, Deacon didn't really have a place in Genesis and he had a lot of guilt to carry. The last we heard he was going on a trip with Micah and Darren?
He was very humanised in this book and you really see who Deacon is and the burden he bears. And he meets Lydia. Who looks at him, not Micah, who all the girls fawn over. She and her town have their own secrets. And maybe that's why she can can see the good within the dark in him and see hom as he truly is.
If you read the Warrior series you will be familiar with the vampires and Werewolves and the great evil Dr Icahn. And that there were more scientists out there. And the whole situation was far from over. I think i know who's stories will be next but things seem very interesting and more the Warriors have delt with before...
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Despite the fact thaat Deacon is a spin off i have to say that it doesn't feel like a spin off... It feels like the all familiar and cozy post apocalyptic world we have come to love with all its characters and all its troubles. As always Rebecca Royce doesn't disappoints in the least and we have a book that Deacon so much deserved! Of course we have the chance to see some characters that we have come to love from Rachel Clancy world but hey....its Rachel and the gang!!!! The only thing that didn't sit well with me is that in the end of the book i felt like the author kinda rushed us into the future and that was something i would have liked to see go slower.Still it doesn't steal anything from the story, the characters or the world building which is amazing. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author and I decided to review it.
The Warrior series was one of my all time favorites by Rebecca Royce, and I don’t typically enjoy young adult reads. I loved all the characters in it, but I sort of had a soft spot for Deacon, and now he has his own book, and it’s not young adult. Little Deacon’s all grown up folks. Color me ecstatic! In this book, all Deacon wants to do is make his way across the country with his best bro Micah (How the hell did that happen?), and kill a few monsters along the way. As usual though, Deacon finds himself right in the thick of it, smack dab in the middle of a war with the vampires and the werewolves. As he fights off every monster in the vicinity, he also manages to find love with a beautiful villager named Lydia. Theirs is not an easy path to love, with lies, insecurities, and doubt getting in the way occasionally, but they get there and it’s a beautiful thing to witness. Now, if they can just stay alive long enough to make it to happily ever after. I, quite literally, could not put this book down. I was completely riveted from the first word to the last. This book was inspiring and insightful, impassioned and romantic, provocative and action packed. I would highly recommend it, and if the last part of the book is any indication, the next book is going to be a wild ride. I, personally, can’t wait!
*I was given an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review. All opinions are my own.
Sarah Curran 5.0 out of 5 starsI loved this book some of Deacons internal thoughts had me ... 8 March 2018 Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase This book is set in a post apocalyptic world where people live in fear for their lives and battle constantly against Vampires and Werewolves. When we meet Deacon first he is travelling with his friend and fellow Warrior Micah, he is constantly replaying his past in his head, thinking of all he has done wrong in his short life, he struggles with the guilt of his past actions and inaction's.
Everything changes one dark night when they spot fires from a werewolf camp and come across a young woman trying to save her baby brother from the werewolves. They make their way to her town called Geronimo and then things change. The town is not as it seems where are all the men, secrets are revealed, battles are fought and Deacon comes across a woman (Brynna) who seems to know all about him, but he cant remember her. As the story progresses we learn more about Deacons past and find out more about the mysterious Brynna, secrets are revealed that will change everything.
I loved this book some of Deacons internal thoughts had me chucking to myself, his relationship with Lydia changes him and we begin to see the real Deacon as she slowly draws him out of himself and he helps the town to fight back. I don't normally read this type of book but found myself engrossed in Deacons story ,highly recommend it .
Whilst this is essentially a standalone book I would recommend reading the Warrior series first. It really does set the tone for this book and fills in some of the history.
Deacon, who we initially met in the Warrior series featuring Rachel Clancy, was a survivor of the Vampire feeding caverns. Rescued by Rachel and her friends he initially lusted after her. But now he has settled into being her best friend.
But he and Micah feel the need to leave Genesis and sear further afield, hoping to meet other survivors and maybe assuage their need for adventure on the way. But less than 2 weeks from home they find a town in need of rescue. Deacon comes across the lovely but woefully unprepared to fight werewolves damsel in distress.
But once again, not all is as it may seem. The townsfolk are hiding secrets, they just can't figure out what. But as Deacon slowly becomes tethered to the little town and a certain school teacher, deceptions are uncovered and loyalties are tested.
Deacon still feels unloved and unsure of his place in everyone's affections, least of all the Lyons family. But I loved watching him grow emotionally and psychologically stronger as he realises he is not the fluke of luck he thinks he is and that he is a worthy and well thought of member of the group.
The first series was awesome and you will not be disappointed in the spinoff. Told from Deacons point of view we are given a new prospective on life in this new world. Being born in this time, he has no memories of the past lives others have had and he feels like more of an outsider. Guilt and remorse color his vision so he sets out to see what else is out there. Traveling with an unlikely companion, he comes face to face with his fears and regains his confidence in a trying situation. As with Rachel, this story is a journey of personal discovery. The characters are challenged at every turn and they rise stronger from them. Seeing the characters come into their own is an exciting adventure, the struggles keep you on the edge of your seat and you can't help wondering what will happen next. You can read this without reading the first series however, it will give you a better understanding of what is going on if you do. This was easy to read, easy to follow, still had great characters and leaves you wanting more. We do get a glimpse into the future at the end that makes me all the more eager to get reading the next book as a lot seems to have happened and I can't wait to find out how. I volunteered to read this story for my honest opinion.
Life Beyond the walls he’s known. This is a love story that’s post-apocalyptic. In a time where Vampire and werewolves are a danger to all. Some people had been put in states and woken in the aftermath. Some were born to be food for the Vampires. One company that help create warriors, that some thought were the good guys, only to find out was the evil itself behind a lot of what’s happened. Deacon was one of the people born in the Vampire cages, to someday become food for them. Only somehow, he escaped that fate alone with his family. But he became a warrior despite his upbringing. But not all thing went as planned and he found himself on the wrong side believing, like many, that it was the good side. And the aftermath of that is what has him leaving the place of the only safety he has ever known. Micah, the son of a leader at Genesis, along with Deacon leave to see if anything exists beyond Genesis. And this is where the story gets interesting. Just two weeks walk in the snow away from there and they come across a woman screaming and trying to fight off werewolves with a stick, all to get her baby brother back. This is a self-contained story, a spin off and a beginning to a new series. Very well written and extremely entertaining to read.
I was very happy to hear about this followup to an amazing series. Deacon is the first book in a new series called Warrior World which features characters from the Warrior series. The original series was YA and featured Rachel Clancy and her quest to discover the truth about their world. While I would recommend you read it first, you don't have to do so.
Deacon was in love with Rachel but she has chosen a different path and he is now trying to find the right place for him. Deaon has a lot of pain and it is hard for him to handle the consequences of some of his past actions. When he is labeled a hero for helping a town, he gets a new chance and the possibility of a new love. It won't be an easy path.
I really enjoy how the author is able to create such developed characters and universes that are so different from our own. This novel is told from Deacon's view and it was a great way to get to know him intimately. We only had a very limited view of him in the other series as it was told from Rachel's viewpoint. He really wrestles with all his pain. Lydia offers him another chance at love. The story has a lot of action and romance and definitely keeps you involved from beginning to end.
I love how just when you think Royce's books are done, things take a hard left turn. Queen of plot twists, is she.
This story centers on Deacon and Lydia, with Micah playing a background role. Deacon and Micah wanted to get away from Genesis, so that's what they do. They take off on their own to hunt down vampires and werewolves. They're both warriors which means they've had their DNA experimented on and have special abilities to make then good hunters.
They run into Lydia as she tries to save her young brother from werewolves. Barefoot in her nightgown. After saving her, she fawns over Deacon like the hero he has become to her. They return to her town with her, where things get a little fishy.
I really liked Deacon's character in this story. He's fighting his own inner demons, and you get a really good look at that. Lydia, despite her flaws, really is an open book and forces her inner demons out into the open often. She's also pretty determined and kick butt when need be.
It's really cute how unsure Deacon is about everything. It happens often with Lydia and other experiences, but not so much so as to become annoying.
Both of them have lived hard lives.
I can't wait to see whose story get picked up next.
Deacon Warrior World Book 1 by Rebecca Royce ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Deacon Warrior World Book 1 is a spinoff of The Warrior Series. Which I absolutely enjoyed and this is just as enjoyable if not more. Overall. Deacon is action-packed with Vampires,Werewolves and evil scientists. If you haven't read The Warrior Series you will have questions but you will still enjoy reading this story. I am happy that I got to read Deacon story. Deacon has grew up in world consumed with darkness he learned to fight and be a leader even if he didn't think he could be anybody's leader. The characters have aged in this story and somethings have changed but it's still it's a most interesting world I really enjoyed Deacon falling in love. It made me smile and happy that he returned to camp and he made friends with Rachel and her husband. I'm so glad I start from the beginning and enjoy the ride! I really love reading Rebecca Royce stories. Her characters are always engaging, captivating and fantastic. They keep you reading and it's always have to stop before finishing the book. I highly recommend you read Deacon you don't want miss this. I volunteered to read this ARC copy and write a review.
What a great beginning for a spin off series from The Warrior. Deacon and Micah decided to leave Genesis to see what else is beyond or if there is any other civilizations out there. While staying in an abandoned house they notice a fire and decide to investigate. They never thought they would see a girl trying to beat werewolves with a stick to get her baby brother back. Of course they help her and them back to their people. They take them back little town in the middle of nowhere. They find out from Lydia that their men had disappeared one night so there's only women. Deacon and Micah knew there was something weird going on. Where are the vampires? And how are the women fighting off the werewolves? Plus the girl Lydia seems to attached herself to Deacon. They decide to teach them how to defend themselves before they leave and solve the mystery. This was an awesome story. Deacon never thought there would be another girl after Rachel Clancy but Lydia is just as strong a woman. If you liked or love The Warrior series you have got to start this series also. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
I was thrilled read about this world again! Deacon and Micah are out traveling together after the girl he wanted chose another. While roaming they come across a girl fighting off werewolves to save her brother. When they get them back to her town, they start hearing about the prophecy but even stranger she isn't trying to get Micah's attention just his. As they learn about new secrets being held and then teaching others to fight werewolves and vampires the reader sees how strong Deacon really is. Under all his insecurities is a strong young man.
What a great story! This author really knows how to give depth to her characters. The reader gets to know them by how descriptive the story is. Deacon is a young man who started out the story thinking he wasn’t strong and by the end he found who he could be and became him, the path wasn’t easy but with the help of old and new friends he made it. It was great seeing characters from the other books, always like that, and meeting new ones. Can’t wait for more, hopefully Micah’s story!
I felt like I was missing a part of the story from the start. The book jumps in with Deacon and Micah traveling. Their backgrounds are entwined in the story as it goes along. As it's told, you wonder more about the background. The background is provided in another series. Deacon is a spin off from another series (Warrior) and while you can read it stand alone as I did, you may want to read the previous series first.
Lydia made a big impression on Deacon and became a fixation for him. Lydia is this naïve of the world girl. I thought she was a little insipid at times. I just wanted to shake her. I really liked Deacon and Micah. As a partners on their venture, they worked well together.
I have hopes for the next couple of stories to help round out this new world and the people of it. I'm also headed over to the other series to catch up.
This is awesome and takes place in a post-apocalypse world where humans have to fight vampires and werewolves everyday to live and have been hiding in an underground city called Genesis. There are a group people in this city with a special gene that make them able to fight the vampire and werewolves and are called warriors. After they find out the depth of isaac icahn the people moved up on earth. Deacon (born in the vampire camp for food then rescued ) and Micah a huge part of the warrior's in genesis want to find out if there is more out there. They find a town of humans lifting above ground. The story is built around that so I'll let to read to find out what's happening. Great storyline, awesome mystery and the characters are fantastic it has drama, danger, action and spice. Don't miss it. Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.
I do have to say, I really enjoyed this book. As always, Rebecca is a brilliant writer and really gets you into the amazing world that she has created. One thing to note, it does feel like you start off not knowing what's going on (the character background, etc), but Rebecca does a pretty good job of going though the character history as you go. There were times I felt a little lost, so I decided to do some digging and found out that this is a spin off series from her warrior series. I decided to read that one 1st and I am glad I did. This is because 1) it's a fantastic series, and 2) it gives you some of the context that you might feel better knowing going into this read. All in all, fun characters, post-apocalyptic world, good suspense...what more are you looking for?
n Deacon book 1 of Warrior World by Rebecca Royce, tells a tale about Deacon a vampire/werewolf/kick butt warrior trained to kill anything evil. Wandering the world depressed the woman he loved didn’t return his feelings, he left her and discovered a village who needed his help. Instead of a destructive force, he could be a hero…
Rebecca Royce did a beautiful job expressing the main character Deacon’s personality and voice through text on a page. Every word read, helps you understand Deacon at a deeper level, drawing you into the action pack romance story guaranteed to satisfy any reader. Read this story for a well written, engaging story where even someone as dark as Deacon, can shed light and transform into the hero he needs to be.
I convinced myself it was going to be a different book.
This book is really hard to rate. At some point I had thought I read a blurb that led me to believe the book was moving in a VERY different way. So I was almost disappointed because it didn't pan out like I expected. However, that doesn't mean the book isn't good. There is insta-love, but the characters are very clear about how strange and unbelievable it is. However, it's just always hard for me to care about a relationship that had no history. I feel like I learned more about the world than I necessarily did about Deacon. Finding out about his family and the time in the vampire cages was very informative though.
We wanted more and she gave it to us! (Not sure I want to try the soup. LOL!) I love the Deacon perspective! I am so glad we got some things cleared up with this POV with his memories and thoughts on past events. Deacon's inexperience is adorable as it come out in different ways. Of course the ongoing issues and new details coming to light (no pun intended) regarding the vamps has us turning pages as we try to solve this mystery. But of course there is still more to come and I am so looking forward to the next book!
Even though I liked the series I do believe I like this one better being I am a older person. I do enjoy YA but when it comes to these worlds most times older is better for escape. Deacon is a character that you will be given the inside to the core. Choices have to be mad with him making different decisions that take us along with it. This is a place like no other which will also keep your attention. You get plenty of goodies in this one that fuels the drama like danger and suspense. There is also Micah to get to know in this one. All in all one fantastic read and start to this.
Ok I went into this book a little skeptical. I enjoyed Rebecca’s RH books, but was unsure about this one since I haven’t read the original Warrior series. I do think you need to read them to completely follow this book. However, if you can get through the parts where they talk about the past, then you’ll be fine. Overall I trues enjoyed this book. I love that Deacon wasn’t really like able, and was completely blindsided by Lydia. She was seriously the Yang to his Yin. I am really looking forward to Micah’s book!
Deacon is very well written. I gave it 4 stars because it took a little bit in the beginning for me to warm up to the characters. Once I was able to get into it I couldn't put the book down! Deacon has such a conflicting emotional structure you can see his struggle and his growth. It just took him longer to see what other people saw in him. The incredible self battle he struggles with shows so so much of what a lot of people face making him incredibly relatable. And that's not even getting into any other characters!! I loved it and cant wait to see what happens in future books
This is a great story with engaging characters, a great storyline and an interesting world. You can definitely follow the changes in the two main characters as they come to know each other and to face some very harrowing experiences. The love scenes are moderately steamy and show both characters vulnerability and charm. The supporting characters are great, too, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
What a fantastic spin-off and much needed second chance for a magnetic character, Deacon.
The author gives enough back story, that readers like myself can read this book as a stand-alone or in addition to the Warrior series. I loved the ruggedness of the main character Deacon, and the idea that there are these rough edges to his relationship with the other characters. I also enjoyed the paranormal aspect to this story.
I really enjoyed this book but I wish I would have known it was a spinoff before I read it. You definitely don't need to read anything but I think it would have helped. Anyway I loved Lydia and deacon because they were so perfect for each other. She is strong and loving and sees something in deacon that he is incapable of seeing in himself. I like watching their love grow at the same time deacon's confidence in himself does. I really liked Micah too and can't wait to read his story.
