MODI INDORUM is Part One of THE JARDINE TRILOGY , a novel about a middle-aged rookie detective with PTSD, her love interest and partner (who’s also a double agent), and a hacker-turned-serial killer who claims to be protecting her.
It is also the first book in THE FIBONACCI SERIES , a mystery suspense saga about a drug organization, a designer heroin, and the people involved. THE FIBONACCI SERIES is a 25-book set in the making.
55 . That’s the number carved on a sea shell in the hand of a dead heroin addict when Detective Ameena “AJ” Jardine meets D.E.A. Agent Tony Aserbbo on her first solo assignment. The death is ruled an overdose—nothing unusual considering the heroin epidemic plaguing New England.
34 . That’s the number of daisies in the hand of another dead heroin addict a year later when the crime scene brings AJ and Tony back together for the first time since their relationship dissolved. Again, that death is ruled an overdose.
AJ never sees the connection with the numbers, even after she learns both bodies have identical octopus tentacle tattoos. She doesn’t see the connection with the heroin used in each Prussian Black, a new designer heroin made with tetrodotoxin from octopus venom and distributed by the Fasciata Order, a violent and highly sophisticated drug organization.
And she does not realize that, on the days the bodies are discovered, the anonymous gifts given to her are from a mysterious hacker named Copernicus who claims to be watching over her and protecting her from the cartel.
It’s not until Dr. Raymond Pinick, a former university professor and grieving father, contacts her, before she realizes there may be a link between the overdose deaths with the numbers 144 and 89 .
Don’t forget to breath.
THE JARDINE TRILOGY is the first subset of THE FIBONACCI SERIES . It is told from AJ’s third-person limited perspective and only reveals part of the story. The rest of the story will be revealed in future subsets. THE COPERNICUS DUOLOGY , the 2nd subset, is anticipated for release in the Summer 2018. THE ASERBBO DUOLOGY , the 3rd subset, is anticipated for release in 2019.
Very interesting mystery. The main character was originally a civil engineer. But a very tragic incident causes her to change her career to law enforcement. The story has perfect elements of suspense and gritty enough with a touch of romance. Enjoyable read
Title – Modi Indorum Author – Karma Lei Angelo Genre – Mystery, Suspense 244 Amazon Pages Rating 4 stars out of 5 Posted 4/13/2018 No. 16 - 2018
My Impressions: violent, girly sleuth, intense,
Main Characters: Detective Ameena Jardine – Forensic Geomorphologist, Major Crimes Investigative Services Bureau. Conrad – Deputy Director, Ameena's boss Tony Asserbbo – DEA agent.
Ameena Jardine has changed careers at age forty after her undercover agent husband was murdered and she was shot. She chose to retrain in law enforcement over her civil engineering job and moved her children from Texas to New Hampshire to be with her mother and step-father. Several corpses lead to conclusions that a secret international drug cartel, the Fasciata Order, that few people have any information on, is behind those and many other deaths. How this highly sophisticated gang has evaded detection worldwide for decades is the biggest mystery here. Tony falls in love with Ameena at their first meeting, and she has reciprocal feelings. But for vague reasons she resists his advances and keeps him at arm's length. This is not a stand-alone story; it ends without a conclusion. To learn more, you'll need to buy the next installment of the trilogy. It appears to be one long story chopped into three novels. There is occasional hard-core cursing, mostly by Ameena as she attempts to come off as tough in a "man's job". The story reminds me more of a 'Cozy Mystery' than Suspense. Ameena is extremely emotional. Most female readers should enjoy it, but many males will find it slow and carrying too much emotional baggage.
The editing is weak with too many missing, extra, misspelled and wrong words used. It's not terrible but far from perfect. Some sentence structures are clumsy and confusing and take rereading. Details of issues I wanted to know more about are lacking. Research on body art, poison and the blue octopus is good. The writing style is wordy with too many passive sentences. The plot is interesting but wordiness drags it down.
I communicated to the author and she assured me the editing has been improved and the inordinate number of passive sentences were dealt with. In spite of its shortfalls in the original issue, I did enjoy the story and recommend it.

Modi Ind0rum is an adult mystery suspense novel by Karma Lei Angelo, the first in a series. In it, a new detective, Ameena Jardine (AJ), former civil engineer turned geomorphologist, is called in to investigate a potential murder and determine if a serial killer is at large. From its suspenseful, opening scene to further murder scenes and flashbacks, we come to understand that AJ is in a cat-and-mouse game with a mysterious serial killer and an equally shadowy informant. Meanwhile, AJ struggles to maintain a decent home life with her new job and a partner who is strongly attracted to her.
The book isn't only narrative; it also contains maps, surplus front matter, and a number of appendices of information. I love this concept. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, it brings a fun-filled experience to the ordinary business of reading a book.
Please note this novel is described as both part one of a trilogy and book one of a series. The ending will not wrap up everything with a bow. It serves the role of first part of a three-part narrative.
I have a soft spot for puzzle-style mysteries and stories with serial killers who use patterns. As the author was a civil engineer herself, she uses her math and engineering background in the story effectively. But one of the best aspects of the story is the presence of a certain numerical sequence. The serial killer keeps score of the body count in an inventive and original way. Additionally, an enigmatic octopus tattoo plays a large role in what unfolds halfway through the book, opening up the story to more than the typical serial-killer-on-the-hunt plot.
I discovered the novel on Twitter and purchased the paperback. All the technical details of the book are great. The interesting front cover, the binding, the layout are all spot-on. This is an author who went above and beyond to bring a quality product to the reader.
I haven't read the second or third book, but the first is everything I love in a mystery suspense novel and will pick up the other two in the future. Overall, Karma Lei Angelo has put together a memorable novel with Modi Ind0rum.
Modi Ind0rum is the first novel in a mystery series. Its story accelerates immediately to a nice, very readable pace. The protagonist is a complex woman nicknamed AJ, an engineer-turned police detective. A rookie with talent on her first solo assignment, AJ juggles tire impressions, high-end tattoo ink, and encounters with and e-mails from cryptic strangers, all of which seem to connect a string of murders to a heroin ring. There may be a serial killer at work, too. Because of her painful past, AJ struggles between her attraction to potential suitors and her need to run away from them. In Modi Ind0rum, the forensics reach a nerd-level depth readers of detective fiction love.
It spoils nothing to note that, in this series, many questions about the story and AJ’s multi-book character arc remain at the end. This first-in-series novel produces a strong “to-be-continued” flare that reaches out to the reader.
Great criminal mystery thriller! A well written cast of characters and a twisting plot kept the pages turning for me. From AJ and Tony's work relationship to AJ's multiple levels of personal struggle amidst the tightly wound mystery of the numbers found with overdose "victims," this story is captivating. The roles of Dr. Pinnick and Copernicus keep the reader guessing, and I liked the jigsaw-puzzled timeline of the book. I will definitely get the trilogy!
MODI IND0RUM is the first in a trilogy. AJ is the lead detective in a death where a carved seashell is found on the body. Tony Aserbbo is assigned to the same case and, much to AJ's surprise, seems to like her. As the body count rises, all seemingly overdose victims, the mystery deepens.
If I had one minor complaint it would be that several aspects of the plot are left hanging for the subsequent books, but all in all, an entertaining read.
I bought this book from the author at the Boston Book Fair a few years ago. It’s an engaging thriller by a local author (in NH) with an interesting cast of characters and a cliffhanger ending that left me wondering where I can find the next book in the series. Lots of fun.
