About the author

(Ovalle, Chile, 1949 – Oviedo, España, 2020) Luis Sepúlveda was a Chilean writer, film director, journalist and political activist. Exiled during the Pinochet regime, most of his work was written in Germany and Spain, where he lived until his death.

Author of more than thirty books, translated into more than fifty languages, highlighting An Old Man Who Read Love Stories (Tusquets Ed., 2019) and The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Him to Fly (Tusquets Ed., 1996). Among his numerous awards are the Gabriela Mistral Poetry Award (Chile), the Primavera Novel Award (Spain) and the Chiara Award for Literary Career (Italy). Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France, and doctor honoris causa by the universities of Toulon (France) and Urbino (Italy).

In a direct, quick-to-read language, full of anecdotes, his books denounce the ecological disaster affecting the world and criticize selfish human behavior, but they also show and exalt the most wonderful manifestations of nature.

This little volume represents a personal milestone - the first book I've ever read in Spanish!
It includes two crime novellas - Diary of a Sentimental Killer and Yacaré - and although the writing is only workmanlike, it is a pleasant and entertaining read.

او به محض رسیدن به هتلش در مادرید نامه­‌ای با عکسی از قربانی بعدی خود دریافت می­‌کند. این درحالی­ست که او منتظر است تا دوست دخترش از تعطیلاتش در مکزیک برگردد. هرچند که حقیقت امر این بوده که این تعطیلات، هدیه قاتل ما برای ازسربازکردن او برای رسیدن به کارهایش است. برخلاف قانون اصلی قاتلان حرفه ای که تاکید بر تنها زندگی کردن و داشتن حداقل ارتباط با دیگران، تقریبا سه سال می­‌شود که با او رابطه دارد. کمی بعد او نامه­‌ای از طرف دوست دخترش دریافت می­‌کند که در آن خبر از آشنایی با مرد دیگری در مکزیک می­‌دهد و می­خواهد که با او بماند. ابتدا او این اتفاق را به فال نیک می­‌گیرد تا بتواند به خیال راحت به ماموریت خود برسد اما این فکر برای مدت زمان کوتاهی کارساز است و او می­‌بیند که نمی­‌تواند از فکر کردن به دوست دختر خود دست بردارد. اما داستان اصلی از زمانی شروع می­‌شود که برای پیدا کردن قربانی خود راهی استانبول می­‌شود و ذهن کنجکاو او لحظه ای تنهایش نمی­‌گذارد. او مدام در تلاش است که بیشتر درمورد قربانی خود بداند و همین موضوع برای او دردسرساز می­‌شود.

dvije kriminalističke priče atmosfere film noira - hotelske sobe i žestice iz mini bara, pljuge, detektiv kojeg žena vara s neznancem i napušta (kučka), atmosfera balonera i šešira s obodom. tekst je jednostavan, oskudan, čak djeluje nedorađeno i površno, ali scene su filmske što daje pričama šarm koji samom tekstu nedostaje.

Me leí este libro debido a que Luis Sepúlveda falleció hace poco y nunca había leído nada de él. En general el libro me pareció un poco infantil pero no en el mal sentido. Sino que por su liviandad y rapidez. A lo mejor si lo hubiese leído 10 años atrás hubiera estado bien. Pero no lo pase mal, las dos historias me recordaron a 13 casos misteriosos de Ana Maria Güirales y Jacqueline Balcells, cuentitos para niñxs con tintes detectivescos donde la idea es descubrir al asesino antes de terminar de leer lo que es muy posible que pase mientras se leen las dos novelitas de este libro.
Destaco el viaje y la prescencia de la chilenidad de Luis solo mencionando la distancia.
Tiene frases notables, pero no las anoté.

With this book I've completed the Romanian translations available for Sepúlveda. None of them is as good as The Old Man Who Read Love Stories, but I became attached to his writing style: sometimes funny, sometimes poetical, pleasant as a mild-sweet cake, simple as a white summer dress, with magical glimpses of places throughout South America.

With these two stories, Sepúlveda explores the detective fiction genre, as he also did in Hot Line.

The Diary of a Sentimental Killer is about a professional assassin who makes some mistakes that are not allowed in his field of work: he falls in love with a young French woman and he takes an interest in his latest target, to which he'll get dangerously close. No, the woman and the target are not one and the same. The ending was more suited to a soap opera, so I was a bit disappointed.

I enjoyed more the second story, Yacaré. A former Chilean policeman is sent to investigate the apparently natural death of a business magnate, only to discover that things are much more complicated. Plus there is an invisible and unusual killer who might strike again.

If you're wondering what Yacaré means, it is a species of small caiman found in central South America.



I felt sorry for the little fellows, as in the story they were ruthlessly hunted down by an Italian company dealing with leather goods. But I felt even more sorry for the tribe of Indians that revered the caimans as some sort of deity. I didn't find any clue that they actually existed. Anaré, as they were called, had an interesting mythological story about the Yacarés (I'll do my best with the Romanian-English translation):

They were Anaré Indians and they followed an ancient law, because in the early years of mankind, the world was entirely made of water, and humans and animals alike lived on the back of the big Yacaré. The reptile dreamed of fruits and there were fruits, it dreamed of fish and there were fish, it dreamed of turtles and there were turtles. But one day, the first Jeashmaré appeared and shot a fiery arrow through the big reptile's heart. Deadly wounded, for days on end it splashed the water with its tail. A thousand baby reptiles were born, some small as larvae, others big as hunters, but the ancient Yacaré left no clue as of which should be its heir. Even nowadays, the Anaré Indians have to take care of all the babies, so that the sweet time of dreams would return, on the back of the big Yacaré.

اولین داستان مدرنی که خوندم شاید "عامه‌پسند" بوکوفسکی بود، بعد اون کتاب از "انسان" بطور عام و "نویسنده" (به طور خاص بوکوفسکی) بدم اومد. با خوندن این رمان کوتاه، فهمیدم بهتره به عصر خودم برگردم. این مدل داستان‌ها مال من نیستن.
داستان "یادداشت‌های روزانه‌ی آدمکش احساساتی" از "عامه‌پسند" بهتر بود امّا ارتباط عمیقی باهاش نگرفتم. نمی‌دونم چی توی این داستان‌هاست که من رو از کاغذ جدا می‌کنه... سکس؟ تکنولوژی؟ زبان امروزی؟ نمی‌دونم امّا می‌دونم این داستان، مال من نبود.
پایان داستان برای من تقریباً قابل حدس بود ولی اسپویل نشده بود. به عنوان کسی که رمان جنایی-پلیسی دوست داره، می‌گم ارزش خوندن داشت، کوتاه بود، خوش‌قلم و خوش‌خوان.

Estuve en Miami presentando mi novela y haciendo una lectura en una librería conocida y de regreso en el avión finalmente me leí El Diario y terminé Water for Elephants.
El diario me pareció interesante. Sepúlveda es un tipo con una vida muy rica y lo demuestra en su escritura, de tantos estilos… En nada se parece este relato al Viejo que leía historias…. Que por cierto para ser sincero me gustó mucho más.
Para mí el mayor atributo es el desarrollo del personaje sin decir mucho, con el característico lenguaje directo de Sepúlveda. La narrativa me pareció un poco seca y carente de lírica, lo cual me gustó pues el narrador es un asesino a sueldo… También disfruté la descripción del apartamento en Francia, con los libros y todo eso y el hombre del espejo, el doble. Ambas imágenes son posibles debido a esa vida de Sepúlveda tan rica y con aspectos tan divergentes…
Lo que no me gustó fue lo predecible del relato. Supuse el final a mitad del mismo.

Jurnalul unui killer sentimental este o carte ușoară, nu neapărat plină de subtilități și sensuri ascunse, dar captivantă, datorită aerului de roman polițist. Mi-a plăcut în mod special aerul degajat, dar în același timp firea calculată a personajului principal, care trebuie să ia o decizie ce-i va îndrepta viața într-o anumită direcție. Autorul, unul dintre cei mai renumiți scriitori contemporani din Chille reușește să captiveze cititorul prin cuvinte simple, dar bine aranjate, antrenând omul ce deschide cartea în a pătrunde trup și suflet în lumea ( sau chiar în pielea) killerului sentimental.

Ziua a început prost, şi asta nu pentru că aş fi eu superstiţios, însă cred că în asemenea zile cel mai bine e să nu accepţi nici o misiune, chiar dacă recom­pensa însemna un cec cu şase zerouri, scutit de impozite. Ziua a început prost, şi târziu, pentru că am aterizat la Madrid la şase şi jumătate, era foarte cald, iar în drum spre hotel taximetristul a ţinut morţiş să-mi ţină o poliloghie despre campionatul european de fotbal. Aş fi avut chef să-i înfig în ceafă ţeava unui pistol de calibrul patruzeci şi cinci ca să-l fac să-şi ţină pliscul, însă nu aveam la mine nici o armă şi, în plus, un profesionist nu se apucă să tragă într-un cretin, chiar dacă respectivul e taximetrist.
La recepţie mi-au dat cheile de la cameră şi un plic. În el se afla o fotografie înfăţişând un grup de şase indivizi arătoşi, toţi între treizeci şi patruzeci de ani, care semănau destul de mult între ei; dar pe mine nu mă interesa decât cel care avea în jurul capului un cerc făcut cu carioca. Asta era misiunea mea, iar tipul cu pricina nu mi-a plăcut. În partea de jos a fotografiei se putea citi: „A treia întâlnire a organizaţiilor non-guvernamen­tale, ONG". Nici asta nu mi-a plăcut. Niciodată nu mi-au plă­cut filantropii, iar tipul mirosea de departe a filantropie modernă. Minima etică profesională interzice întrebările legate de viaţa indivizilor pe care tre­buie să-i lichidezi, dar privind fotogra­fia aceea am devenit curios şi asta m-a deranjat. În plic nu mai era nimic altceva, şi de fapt aşa se şi cuvenea să fie. Trebuia să încep să mă familiarizez cu acel chip, să observ amănuntele rele­vante cu privire la punctele lui forte sau la slăbiciunea sa. Chipul omenesc nu minte niciodată; e singura hartă care înregistrează toate teritoriile în care am locuit.
Tocmai îi dădeam bacşiş băiatului care îmi cărase valiza sus când a sunat tele­fonul. Am recunoscut glasul omului care-mi stabilea misiunile, un tip pe care nu l-am văzut niciodată şi nici nu vreau să-l văd, pentru că aşa stau lucru­rile între profesionişti, dar al cărui glas l-aş putea recunoaşte dintr-o mie.

3 histórias originalmente publicadas pelo autor em jornais, e todas eles com um sabor próprio, que alguém mais conhecedor dos sabores do mundo que eu, associaria a um diferente prato chileno.

Não consegui gostar da história homónima ao título. Foi-me muito difícil criar empatia com o "killer sentimental", destacando-se para mim a misoginia, mais ou menos óbvia em cada parte da história. Se o associasse a cozinha chilena seria um prato de fusão onde nenhum chileno reconheceria algum elemento do seu país

Com Jacaré e Hot Line, fiquei maravilhada como Sepúlveda retrata o Chile. Um contador de histórias com sentido de humor, até para retratar as coisas mais tristes, Sepúlveda fez-me ler cada uma destas histórias em menos de uma hora. Voltando à gastronomia, e depois de alguma pesquisa, direi que Jacaré será similar a uma empanada, e Hot Line (o meu favorito) será uma bebida doce como um terremoto ou melhor, um pisco sour - com um travo agridoce.

Adorei a menção à história do Chile como a Villa Grimaldi, sobre a qual quero ler em "O Palácio do Riso". A magia da leitura é o quanto nos faz aprender, ou querer aprender, e não só sobre História, mas sobre as histórias das pessoas debaixo da História.

Fiquei com muita vontade de ler mais obras deste autor, e sugiro a todos que façam o mesmo.

De gran fluidez y corta duración, ambas novelas cortas son trabajos interesantes, en pocas páginas te presentan personajes con bases sólidas que trabajan en conjunto para resolver la problemática de cada historia. Siendo diario de un killer sentimental, no más que una historia de asesinos a sueldo de Hollywood con muchos latinos de por medio, Yacaré se lleva todos los halagos posibles, pues en la misma cantidad de páginas te cuenta no solo un misterio, sino que también las vivencias de sus personajes, de sus pasados y presentes, sin importar el idioma que estos profesen. Con un manejo de la narración excepcional, Yacaré se vuelve una historia muy poco olvidable, además de creativa y con gran identidad.

Han resultado perfectos para entrar en el modo lectura de verano: lecturas fáciles, curiosas y que te sorprenden con algo inesperadado. Aquí hay dos misterios. No son el típico producto de historia policiaca y eso me ha gustado. En cada uno hay una persona extremadamente perceptiva, humorística cuando su sentimentalidad hace acto de presencia. "Yacaré" me ha gustado por descubrirme una idea de la selva desconocida por mí. "Diario de un killer sentimental" me ha gustado por el final no obvio que pensé que iba a tener. Luís Sepúlveda es un gran cuentista.

„Diario de un killer sentimental” es una corta novela negra sin mucho mérito. No me interesa el punto de vista o las opiniones de un asesino a sueldo, especialmente si son pura misoginia más clichés. Y para no poner ningún spoiler, voy a decir nada más que no, el mundo no es tan “endemoniadamente pequeño” como para hacerme tragar la conclusión. (1/5 estrellas)

Aunque sí sepa a cliché en alguna que otra parte, “Yacaré” me entretuvo y lo leí en una sentada.
Además de sorprenderme, sí contiene un valioso comentario social en mi humilde opinión (3,5/5 estrellas)
