Fiona Fleming #4

Ghosts and Goblins and Murder

Rate this book
A Séance Kind of Evening

It was almost as if someone wrapped the room in a cold hand, chill in the air triggering goosebumps on my skin. I caught motion in the corner of my eye, turned in time to see a glowing, ghostly figure float through the pocket door and come to a halt at the far end of the table. This time, rather than a static image, the young man raised both arms, eyes black pits of emptiness, mouth gaping open as he reached for Emelia.

Who screamed and reached back. “Manuel!”

I’d be nominating Sadie for an Oscar for this performance. Right after my terror at this new and utterly believable trick allowed me to breathe.

When the psychic leading the seance she's attending ends up dead, Fee can’t help but feel like her bad luck yet again put her in the wrong place at the wrong time. With Sheriff Crew Turner ordering her to stay out of it or else, her father, retired from the force or not, egging her on and a string of murders begging to be solved, she can either go home and be a good B owner or find out whodunit!

I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.

Naw. I like being a nerdy girl :)

Got to admit, I didn’t enjoy this one. Don’t get me wrong: I still like the series and will definitely read on, but this was so far the worst. Fee was uncharacteristically depressive and got on my nerves with her self doubt, fast switches from low to high and back and also her continued acting against her better judgment. And it wasn’t just her, also other regulars acted annoyingly erratic as if they all were in a funk. That just was no fun and I personally am not reading these cozies to get depressed and annoyed.
Also, the promise of a budding relationship from the last book was turned completely around with no real reason.
Finally, there are two mysteries going on since book one. Now, I do like that - but Fee’s continued putting of taking the next step just to stretch it out gets tiring. She needs better reasons to continue those than Fee not feeling like following the next lead.
Okay, enough ranting. I hope the next one will get back to old or better form.

I had a lot of fun reading this book. Pattie Larsen really doesn’t disappoint with this series. When you are looking to laugh, snicker, smile, make your brain work out, and even have a few moments where you reach boiling point with some of the characters, the Fiona Fleming Cozy Mysteries are a definite stop to do, especially during any holiday season or festivities.
Fiona is always such a rich character to relate to. It is easy to see ourselves in her and it is also fun to try to guess the who had done it as well as the how. I do admit that sometimes I am able to guess on the who, but rarely on the how or even the why. This time, I was not able to guess on the who had done it and it was a big surprise for me to find out in the end.
This time, Fiona takes us through not only the Halloween season, but also through a séance that will leave you wondering, snickering and enthralled into the very action that took one unsuspecting victim from talking to the dead, to being dead on a more than personal basis. You will not only adore the action, but the characters as well. You will cheer for Fiona, feel her hurt and her pain as she is going through much more than her usual city drama in this book.
If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend you read this book, but I also suggest you start the collection from the very start if you have not start any of Fiona’s books. Yes, you could read it by itself, but it is better to follow through because much of the references in this book are the ones about the other books of the series. So, reader beware. And if you have read the first three books, then dive deep into this one because it is huge fun. It was for me at least. Happy reading and see you in book five!

New Mystery of the supernatural kind!

Another riveting mystery from this series! I only took off one star for the few misspellings I found while reading. We finally get some more info on the other characters and their backstories, while also finding new developments that may or may not link to the clues left behind by Grandma Iris.

Crew is honestly getting on my nerves, and while I understand why since he is Sheriff, as a man I wish Fiona would start looking elsewhere for a potential new love. Hopefully he can get his head out of the sand instead of being this extreme dichotomy of overall being a n annoying prat with slivers of kindness peeking out.

Back to this book's mystery, the culprit was easy enough to identify and the motive simple to find out as well once we got a bit more info from each of our suspects. This book seemed to focus more on the residents of Reading than the mystery, which I'm ok with seeing as how I wanted to know more about them in the previous novels. Overall, I enjoyed the book. Just like the others, I finished it in a day and now I'm off to get the next one in the series!

Note: Please look at the note I made visible if you are in need of a trigger warning for sexual harassment/assault, nothing graphic. It is a minor occurrence in only a few sentences, but if that is enough to cause you to trigger, please be advised that it is only in the earlier section of the book.

Fee and ghosts—what could go wrong? She seems to always find herself at the wrong place at the wrong time, and the spooky season is no different. Daisy has dragged Fiona to a séance for some good Halloween fun; however, the medium Sadie finds herself joining those she was meant to call forth. In a true closed-door detective murder style, the suspect pool is limited, and the killer is quite a shock.
I did expect more from this one since it was paranormal light and a Halloween installment. The bonus is that we meet one of Pattie’s other characters, Alice Moore, the lead in one of her paranormal series. The story seemed flat, and I felt as though none of the several past life mysteries in her life had been addressed. They just keep getting piled onto the story. Also, can we talk about Vivian French? She is one character I am hoping finds herself at the dead end of one of Fee’s upcoming investigations. She is one that just gets under my skin.

Fiona is helping at an event being catered by her best friend Daisy when her child hood rival Vivian French comes to taunt her, and insult her mom. On top of all this, the local fortuneteller tells her that time is running out.

When Fiona goes with Daisy the next day to a seance at the fortune teller's home. Things don't go as planned as the old lady dies suddenly.

Well... It looks like Fiona is in the middle of another murder investigation. Much to the irritation of local sheriff (and secret heart throb of Fiona) Crew Turner.

Another fun experience with Fiona and Petunia!

This is my fourth book in this fun series and Patti did not disappoint! I thoroughly enjoy the escapades of Fee and her adorable pug and the other characters of Reading. I love a good mystery with humor sprinkled throughout and this series fits the bill. Looking forward to more!

“In fact, if anyone told me two years ago I’d be living
in Reading again, running Grandmother Iris’s B&B as an adopted mother to a flatulent pug, I’d have laughed in their face before drowning the idea in a bottle of merlot.”

Definitely think the books are continuing to get better and better!! Don’t plan on stopping so on to the next one.

Ghostly Fun

These tales just keep getting better and better. I'm also still in there rooting for Fee and Crew. They are meant for each other i think, just seem to be fighting it. Great fun story.

Too formula driven

Great characters and setting, but after reading 3 books in this series I lost interest because it was too predictable. I knew who the killer is and the protagonist would put herself in danger before the "surprising" killer revealed himself or herself.

Now I am sadly waiting for book 5. That is the only problem with a series, they are addictive. This is a great one. Characters are real and you can't help feel like you know them.

Great series of books - thrilling and so entertaining! I'd love to see a bit of Fiona's love life evolving (whether with the fine Crew Turner or someone else) - I hate to see her so lonely. And I adore this chummy pug of hers.
