A Wedding in Cornwall #7

A Romance in Cornwall

Rate this book
After months in America, Julianne and Matt have finally returned to their beloved Cornish cottage — and Julianne discovers that time did not stand still in the village during her absence. As she struggles with homesickness for Seattle and feeling out of place in the Cornish life she loved so deeply, Julianne makes the acquaintance of a famous romance novelist struggling with writer's block, who believes her much-needed story lies somewhere in the tiny village of Ceffylgwyn. When the writer finds herself momentarily inspired by Julianne and Matt's own love story in Cornwall, Julianne begins a — sometimes literal — walk down memory lane, remembering her favorite moments, people, and places in this spot. But as her newfound friend learns that inspiration isn't always what it seems, will Julianne, too, find her way past the changes in both the village and herself? Old memories and familiar faces await readers in this playful tribute to the series' first novel a year after its debut, as Book Seven bridges the gap between Julianne's first life in Cornwall and one which promises new friends and new adventures yet to come.

Favorite Quotes:

The catch in her voice gave her away. I couldn't help but smile. It was proof how far Kitty had come that we hugged goodbye, a brief one, but a warm one. She was far from the prickly girl who had stormed out of my office two years ago, when I suggested she was a diamond in the rough, who would have died rather than admit how much she wanted that job at the manor.

I was thinking it could be fun to be a writer. All that money and loads of spare time when your book is finished. No more dusting knickknacks and cleaning drapes for me.

He's a dishy one, as sweet as chocolate and as brainy as Sherlock. Many a heart was broken in the village when he finally fell in love. If I'd been ten years younger, I'd have chased him up the nearest tree in haste to catch him.

"She hasn't been out in the daylight for two days now," said Dovie, keeping her voice low in the Fisherman's Rest. "Only comes out in the evenings. Like a vampire, she is. I'd no idea writers were like that."

My Review:

I adored this sweet installment the best, although I haven’t read them all, yet. But how could I not favor and rave about an amusing, clever, and insightful narrative featuring a resourceful homeless dog who saves the day? Ms. Briggs pokes fun at herself and profession with her humorous dissertation on writers and their process. The engaging storylines were lively, easy to follow, and left a satisfied smile on my face.

Kudos of Laura Briggs for putting an introduction into the start of the book which gives a rough idea of what has happened since the last book, thus getting seasoned readers back into life in Ceffylgwyn that bit quicker. Especially as in my case if felt like ages since I read the previous book.

A Romance in Cornwall is the 7th standalone novella in this series, and it does have a slightly different feel to it. For a start we get to meet some new characters who I predict or hope may become regulars such as Rosie.

We get to know Gemma a lot more, with her brand new writing ambitions, and Julianne just didn't quite feel herself. It was odd that this book didn't seem to feature any big even tat Cliff House, despite Julianne being an event planner.

There was though a romance author trying to gain inspiration from the village, and as a result there were a lot of literary references and talk of books which I always tend to enjoy as an avid reader.

This is another good addition to the series that I enjoyed reading, and hopefully is going to have served as a sort of reboot for the series, so that the next book feels a bit more familiar again.

Love has many faces …

I had not read the first books, but the author kindly lets the reader know what happened before and it gave me also time to get to know the important characters.

Some of them are not really present at the moment, but they are not forgotten. So I suppose we will hear more about them in one or more future books.

This story is about missing some things but gaining others, but most importantly follow your heart, even if it takes you down a different path because if your heart is not in it, you might as well quit.

I am looking forward to the next part.

Thank you, Laura Briggs and RachelsRandomResources

This was my least favorite of the series. We have a gap of some months from the last, and Matt and Julianne are now back from Seattle and once again in Cornwall. Things have changed since they left, and Kitty (who I really like) has gone to Paris to work with her fiancee. For much of the book Julianne mopes around trying to figure out if she no longer loves Cornwall, should've stayed in Seattle, etc. My favorite character in this one was the stray dog Davy, and he definitely gets a HEA.

This is also a short story/novella, as are the others, so easy to finish. I'll definitely read the next in the series, but hope things pick up a bit.

OK (laughing) I have to start with my favorite line in this book was about how authors have all that money and free time!

This book was a delight. It is more about the behind the scenes of how a writer becomes inspired to write a book, specifically a romance novel. Or rather, how inspiration is not around every corner and even the most swoonworthy person may not translate into the perfect hero on the page.
There is a happy ending, albeit not the one the author had been trying to find, nor the book the villagers were eager to read. I think they will love the resulting book even more.

The prose flowed smoothly and the pace is steady. The characters feel comfortable and likable.
I am not reading this series in order but I am enjoying it and plan to read each book in this series.
It is a comfortable and enjoyable way to escape my day to day dramas and dull routines.

Another lovely book following the fortunes of the characters at Cliffs House at Cefylgwyn. Event co-ordinator Julianne and her husband Matt have returned from their trip to America and find there have been several changes in their absence.

Renowned author Rowena St James is staying in the local inn and befriends Julianne. Rowena is in Cornwall looking for inspiration for her new book. Julianne shows her the hidden delights of the Cornish coastline, woods and the people that live in the area.

I enjoyed this book. I didn't feel the story line was as strong as the previous books, but I loved it all te same. Roll on Mid October for the next installment

::..Reviewed for Red's Midnight Readers..::

I was very kindly provided with an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. I have given it 3 stars.

This is the first book I have read by Laura Briggs and I have a feeling that maybe I should Started with the first book in the series. Although A Romance In Cornwall does give enough background detail for it to make sense to new readers.

Book 7 in this series is the perfect accompaniment to a cool Autumn evening as the warmth of summer begins to fade.

I have really enjoyed this series by Laura Briggs, but although this story was ok, I did not find as good as all the others in the series. I only hope that the next in the series is better than this one.
