weakest so far; didn't feel as though it did anything to advance the plot. the events in were the most tense and harrowing portions of the series so far.

More of the same.
Not to say I didn't enjoy the fifth novel in the Grimgar series, because in all honesty I did. The action was there, the characters I have grown to love are there, and we get a broader view of the world in which our isekai teens have been thrown.
And despite getting introduced to another party, one that makes me wonder how the hell they have survived, not a lot new happens in this book. Sure, they discover a new area with new rules, but that isn't any different than moving to the Wonder Hole or assaulting the Orc held keep.
I am also getting a bit tired of seeing the party almost get wiped every time. Sure, they are shown to be competent adventurers at times, but that still doesn't stop them from almost getting taken out each and every time they discover something new. I admit, the rules by which the Dusk Realm works would be terrifying if I was trapped in a fantasy world. So much so, I honestly probably wouldn't go into it to be frank.
But that isn't enough to break it away from the fact that we have seen this before. And this being, what, the third time(?), it is starting to get a bit repetitive in the end.
Still, the writing is there, and the interior illustrations are pretty good at capturing what is going on. (though I really wish they had done one of a Cultist)
And yet, as I mentioned, I still enjoyed this novel. The characters were familiar, and they showed evolution as they continued to grow further in their roles. The party leader also evolves, though I felt far too much time was spent on how sleepy his eyes looked. (I mean, Nicolas Cage has sleepy eyes as well, and no one bats and eye) But, we still get to see how he evolves as a character and how he is a worthy leader, despite how he feels about his own performance.
In the end, still worth the read, and I am interested to see where they take the story.

A bit flat compares to previous volumes

I found it a little bit flat, the tension of the situation and the drama is also not found in this volume. However it's still make me read it until the end, as I love this series as a whole. Romance as it was already lacking in this series is getting even worse I guess lol. It should be better in the next following volumes.

The journey of Haruhiro and co on the cruel and harsh world of Grimgar continue again. The story is move forwards four month after the 4th volume of Grimgar. The party still journey around Wonder Hole area and now they're getting stronger.

The first half of the books mainly focus on Haruhiro anxiety about being a leader. I believe many of you will hate this part because you see how weak willed-wussy is Haruhiro like Choco said. However, I can related with Haruhiro anxiety which made me more love and fond with Haruhiro character. Haruhiro is introduce as shy and passive boy, yet because of the dead of Manato and the need of survival in Grimgar, he took role as party leader which is something that never he imagined. So, either you hate or love Haruhiro characters is depend on whether you like the first half of this book or not.

The introduction of new characters, The Tokkies Party, make the story much interesting on the last half of the book. What made is hilarious is, knowing the Tokkies is an experience adventure yet they make blunder mistake and made Haruhiro party to save them. In my opinion, the introduction of new characters made the character interaction more lively and fun, knowing on Haruhiro party only Ranta that so noisy.

The mission of rescuing The Tokkies is really cool, this is the first time Haruhiro acknowledge not only by his party but also from the Tokkies about his leadership and judgement. Fun fact, the first person who said Haruhiro as the strong point on rescuing The Tokkies is Shihoru, I have big hope that Shihoru will have huge leap of character development. Thus, can't wait to read the next volume of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.

I enjoyed this volume of Grimgar as it does something that you didn't get until volume 3, and that was interaction with another group. While ranta has been quite an annoying character in all of the volumes he is a little less obnoxious in this volume (don't worry, there will always be a character thats hated it seems ). If i had to give character development it would go to Haru and his party as a whole, as in this volume we see the difference between two different styles of leaders and parties, and how much risk/reward comes with each type. Somehow Ao manages to make the feel of tension slower in this volume compared to the end of volume 4. The author took an interesting twist on what was discovered, and the trials needed to get through this adventure. The weakest part of the book was the very end. For me to go any further in depth will cause me to talk about spoilers, so if you were wondering i liked this book more than volume 4, and it comes second to volume 3 (volume 3 was a beast).

The latest Grimgar volume primarily deals with Haruhiro and his introspection about being a leader along with looking for comfort / a girlfriend. Will he find love? Find out. xD

So yeah, coming off of Haruhiro and co barely surviving the Usterel, they now have become experts at surviving that section of the Wonder Hole. Don't expect to dilly-dally too much with those old Wonder Hole enemies again.

A new party joins the plot in this one, a party we know of but we don't really know well yet. Won't spoil who, but they're "fun" in the same way Ranta is fun. So your mileage may vary on your enjoyment.

I found the fights a bit blah to get through in this one. Where the last one felt like it ended with a video game style boss fight, this one was more hordes and impossible challenges that they slowly slink through. The ending felt abrupt to me too (and not in a "what will happen to them, they're in danger, find out next time" way, but a "that's it, that's your big punch line?" way).

Good sequel.

Good continuation on this serie. The story is engaging although at the end a little bit pointless. The low self-esteem of the protagonist is a annoying at some times. Also a little bit repetitive the continuous self analysis and leadership capabilities of the protagonist. Good story but without a clear goal at the end as happened with the previous book. The story left in the previous books is not mention or taken again in this one which is disappointing.

Whia, two volumes in a row without a major character death. Is the grimness lifting? Probably not. In this volume we get to see Haruhiro leveling into a real badass without realizing it, and there are plenty of hints that he's going to become a darker character. Which is one of the things this series needs. The other is an extended campaign arc where the characters pursue a bigger goal than earning lucre.

Well, onto Vol 6.

Vol 3 > Vol 4 > Vol 5.
I picked it up after the anime and I will say that it's still a enjoyable read (that's why I gave a 4), but I feel like the steam is starting to slow down. I will pick up on vol 6 and see, if the trend keeps going I might drop it, sadly. I wish they touched more on topics about how they got there etc etc, but now it looks like just a generic isekai where they explor dungeons, which is not what grimgar introduced and what made me like it.

Disappointed by the ending of this, like how we get to see another party and another setting very briefly, but I think the endurance and strength of the other party was too unbelievable to me and the set up for Haru was just a let down.
To me he’s annoying in this one.
To me he needed that relationship for character development, otherwise he would keep being/ getting worse.
I may start to like ranta more than him if this keeps going so, hope the next book is better.

After the transition in volume 4, we have a real new start here, with the discovery of the Dusk Realm. But even with that, and the team-up with Kikkawa's party, it felt a bit flat and repetitive... but I hope this will lead to something more! It was also nice to see Haruhiro finally find some confidence about his role as a party leader.

Not bad

A little on the short end with slow character development, like a lot of light novels but it definitely was an enjoyable ride. I stayed up all night reading it from start to finish.

Not a review, just a reminder for me.
They join with “Tokki” party and discover a new location/realm.
Haru has to help rescue other party, he’s boring but reliable blah blah.
They fight cultists and a giant.
That’s about it.

Quote:
Haruhiro tried listening to the voice in his heart, but all it said was 'I want to Punch him', and that didn't seem like it would help. In other words, this wasn't the time to listen to his heart.

Easy read. This is a comedy volume, with a team up with a bunch of insane morons. The thing going for Grimgar was its serious tone, and this volume fails completely! Really hope this was a one of

Finally, something that breaks the mold a bit!

Well-paced and easy to breeze through. The party once again discovers that there is more to Grimgar than could have ever though possible.

Volume 5 of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash showcases Haruhiro once again questioning himself whether or not he is a good leader. Which he has been doing since volume 1 of the series since he took over as leader. I think it’s normal for him to still be having self doubts on his capabilities. It makes Haruhiro more relatable (I think this anyway). Whether or not he’s a good leader comes up again as his team, joins up with team Tokkis to discover a new hunting ground. The new area also doesn’t allow them to use healing magic. Which is a horror to any team that is attempting a new area with unknown enemies. Through the rescue attempt of Team Tokkis Haruhiro sees that other people see his way of leadership is fine too even if he isn’t as charismatic as a leader like Renji. I remember in a business class I learned there are different types of leaders. It’s nice to see Haruhiro see that there is not only just one form of leadership. The introduction of Team Tokkis also showcases that other teams culture can be different from your own and it still can function well.
I really liked the introduction of Tokkis with their colorful personalities. Some of them are pretty funny.
