Review will contain spoilers for all previous Warriors books as well as River of Fire.

What I didn't like:

Alderheart having a romance.  Why was this necessary?

Twigpaw's warrior name.  Twigbranch?  Seriously?  The whole reason she was named that was so stupid! "Because you've grown from a twig into a branch."  Wow.  Still sounds awful.  When I first read it, I thought it was a typo until Bramblestar continued talking.

Dovewing and Tigerheart running off and doing their own thing and then "conveniently" coming back when they were needed.  They really pissed me off because I liked the idea of Dovewing getting over Tigerheart and being mates with Bumblestripe, but no.  We had to do the "forbidden" romances.

How everyone is using poor SkyClan!  You have cats coming and going in their camps, as well as ShadowClan not staying faithful and it's a huge mess and SkyClan never asked for it, OK?

RiverClan coming back to the group and wanting help.  It's your own bloody fault that you need help because you refused to let anyone near you, drama queens.

Tigerheart being brought back to life was...weird.  I can't decide if I like it or not.

What I liked:

Violetshine and Tree are adorable.

Tree's new job!! I genuinely love the idea of a Clan ambassador to settle disputes and having it be someone who is outside the Clans' influence!

Resurgence of Darktail's group. Knew that was going to happen.

Jayfeather's sass.

Briarlight's death.  It was AWFUL.  I cried.  But it was so well done because we've had Briarlight around for two whole series now (?) so we've gotten used to her being there, and this came out of nowhere and was superbly done.

WindClan is so helpful and nice now.  It's refreshing after dealing with the Onewhisker doppelganger who ruled.  (I still believe that Onestar was a bad clone of Onewhisker and Onewhisker is off int eh woods, living out his life).

Greystripe, Brightheart, Cloudtail, and some of the other old gang are still around.  It really hit me with this book that Greystripe is the last character who has been around since book one.  BOOK ONE.  I will be sobbing for hours when he dies.  Just go look for me in the closest restroom.

As a whole, I liked this book.  Twigpaw (I refuse to use that awful name) was better in this, but I still don't like how she's trying to fix everything herself.  She is seriously living up to the "bossy ThunderClan" stereotype.  The whole thing with Tree being able to see and talk to dead cats was cool.  We've never had anything like that before.  But now you have StarClan bringing cats back to life to make them leader and...why?  Tigerheart ran off from his clan.  He abandoned them, and StarClan wants to make him leader??  Not only that, but as Bramblestar said, having a Tigerstar leading ShadowClan sounds really, really bad.  I'm going to have a hard time looking at Tigerheart and not picture Tigerclaw now.  The ending to the book was also super happy and that was weird because when has a Warriors book ever ended on a happy note?  Other than series' end and a few special editions.

All-in-all, a decent read with some pretty great stuff, and Jayfeather's sass had me dying laughing.  Super curious to see where book 6 takes us as I have zero ideas right now.

Whenever I read another Warrior Cats book I always end up forced to think is the series really getting worse, or have I grown to old for it? It wasn’t long ago that I read the first arc though, and it was nearly as good as I remember it being. This newer instalment feels like a mess.

At the beginning of this arc I was excited to have newer POV characters but they’re shoved to the side pretty hard for Alderheart who’s dull at best. Twigbranch (which can we look at that name for a second ugh) just tells you how her relationships are developing. Sparkpelt goes from being a huge asshole to liking her but it’s a snap switch, we never see them learn to like each other on the page. The same goes for Violetshine’s random romance.

The novella Tigerheart’s Shadow is almost required reading to understand this book in the series. There’s a bunch on nonesense with Dovewing and her kits that’ll be confusing otherwise but honestly I can hardly be bothered to care about the 200th forbidden romance with zero consequences from either cat involved. Why is it even against the warrior code if you can just get up and switch to whatever clan your mate is in? Clans mean so little now, you can flip flop until your comfortable and at worse other cats will be annoyed. The 201st forbidden romance is Alderheart loving a kittypet for a few pages even though it ultimately amounts to nothing, what a waste of time.

It seems like this series can’t even be bothered to hold together a plot anymore. Random terrible things happening isn’t a plot. The book opens, fire, death, kidnapping, someone returns, the end. That’s just a series of barely connected events. What’s worse is they can’t even manage to make them have any weight because they won’t kill off any actually significant characters. Even cats who are much older than wild cats have the right to be. Even though Thunderclan has almost an entire clan of medicine cats.

Honestly I don’t really enjoy this series anymore but I keep reading it because I want to outlast it. I want to see the older characters die and actually make room for a new cast. I want to see the warrior code updated because breaking it means less than nothing anymore. Sure you can betray your clan and break the warrior code but then you can come back and be leader after.

I think the publisher is making huge mistakes with how they are handling this series and letting it become the sort of crap they can pump out three times a year that kids will read but never love the way people loved the first arc. Children aren’t stupid, with the rate this series is going they’ll see how poorly written and plotted it is. You can’t even draw them in with the darkness the first series had because there’s no death or consequence anymore. I hate seeing something I love twisted like this, but hey it’s still making money so I guess it’s fine.

I...I can't do it anymore.

I only got 44 pages in and I just could not push myself to continue. It took forever to start, it was sitting in my pile of to-read books for so long now, begging me to start. And I thought when I started, the feeling would go away and everything will be fine. Well, whenever I remembered that I needed to contiune this book, it filled with my dread and I did not want to read anymore.

Guys, I'm done.

I'm done with Warriors.

The series has turned into a milking the franchise mess. We keep doing the same plotlines again, we keep having characters act OOC. Heck, it's like none of these characters LEARN from previous books and their past experiences are just tossed to the wayside.

I wanted to stick by this mess until the end.

Dang it, this was a series I've read since I was in middle school(almost fifteen years). But this book was the last straw.

Seeing the characters act so stupidly and out of character, seeing a plotline that didn't need to extend out as many books as it did, yeah, there comes a point even I can't take it anymore even if it is to rant about it.

I'll still be reading Bravelands/Survivors but Warriors, it was a great run but I'm done with you.

I’m sad to say I didn’t like this book, and it has made me fear how the arc will end
While I can appreciate the slight character development given to Jayfeather, I think the rest of the characters were treated poorly
Twigbranch (god I hate her name) and Violetshine seem to have no personality. I hate how out of no where Violetshine’s affection for Tree is, if the Erins wanted them to have any kind of relationship why not spend this book devolving that instead of making Violetshine unlikeable. Speaking of unlikeable, Leafstar. Enough said.
I think Twigbrach and Finleap’s friendship is really cute, and I would be okay with them becoming mates but sometimes Twigbranch would patronize Finleap so hard and not even be sorry after? Like? Wh y
Now, probably one of my least favourite parts of this book
Alderheart and Velvet
It was so absolutely unnecessary and annoying to have Alderheart instantly fall for this random cat. What purpose did it serve??
And I don’t mean to call anyone out but I definitely mean to call someone out- Fernsong. Sweetheart. I never really liked you, but I thought what you said about being a stay at home dad in Darkest Night was cute! So why weren’t you doing any of that once your kits have been born?
What I theorized for this book was a fight between ShadowClan and SkyClan, Violetshine being torn about fighting her former Clanmates and maybe stopping the war. I wanted to see Twigbranch develop a friendship with Sparkpelt so we could learn more about her, while also helping Finleap find his place in ThunderClan.
I wanted to see an epilogue where Sleekwhisker is seen watching from the shadows, plotting her revenge against Rowanclaw’s family and later becoming a much needed female villain
I understand I will not get everything I hope for in these books, but some of these things -like what I said about Twigbranch and Sparkpelt- seemed like obvious things
Anyways, I can only hope that we get a good climax and ending to this arc

This book is simply a series of minor, seemingly unconnected events which bring few consequences for the overall story. For instance, the story begins with apprentice Twigpaw leaving SkyClan to join ThunderClan, who hardly give her a warm welcome. This plot point had the potential to be very interesting - yet only a few chapters later we are told that Twigpaw is doing just fine in ThunderClan and the plot point is all but forgotten.

Another example is the fire in RiverClan's camp, towards the middle of the book. This fire is depicted in the book's title and on the front cover so it promises to be a major plot point - yet no-one is hurt and very little happens as a consequence in general. It's a very striking contrast to the forest fire in the Original Series, where a major character dies and ThunderClan's entire territory is destroyed.

A further example which has been mentioned at length by other reviewers is Alderheart's brief romance with the kittypet, Velvet. Velvet is introduced towards the end of the book, only to be cut out of the story with the promise that we'll never see her again. Like the other readers, I'm left scratching my head at the point of this interaction.

Maybe I've been watching too much Game of Thrones, but it's very difficult to feel suspense at these events when you know nothing is going to come of them. In the Original Series, major events were actually significant. Cats who joined ThunderClan became major characters. Tragedies like fires and sickness resulted in permanent injury or even death. Forbidden romances, crossing Clan borders or asking to join another Clan was a Really Big Deal. Speaking to StarClan was a rare, magical experience that took place by starlight; now I've lost count of the amount of times a prologue has been set in a Sunny Greenleaf Clearing with a bunch of StarClan cats talking about some upcoming doom.

The strangest thing is that the writers have more incentive than any to kill off characters. ThunderClan is full to the brim with an army secondary characters we never hear anything about.

This book is simply a bunch of inconsequential events strung together, and you know what that leaves us? Filler. This book is a whole, poorly-written, 281 pages of filler.

I want to like this book more than I did. There was so much that they put into 275 pages, meanwhile they spent several hundred on Tigerheart's feelings in his super edition, that was loathsome. I'm upset that they chose to ditch Rowanstar just because they wanted a second Tigerstar. I'm upset that they're ruining Alderheart's character for no reason by making him fall in love with a sexy cat lady that he met once. It's so frustrating that they feel the need to create conflict rather than build his character through his hard work. We finally got more character development with Jayfeather showing that he's not just angry all the time. They killed off Briarlight just because they were tired of writing about a disabled character and couldn't do anything else with her so rather than have her as a background character like the 3000 other cats they just decide to kill her off. Genuinely upset at how they've taken this set of 6 books, you can tell how much it's changed, and I love the new writing, but not the changes to old characters. Should have set it in the future with all the past characters in StarClan rather than ruin them with unnecessary add ons. Again, it was a good book but it's easier to point out the flaws than the accomplishments.

This book was the best book of the series. It was so sad. First Briarlight dies:( I cry. Than Jayfeather finally seems to enjoy something:) I cry happy tears. But than Rowanstar (claw) dies:(. And finally Dovewing moves to Shadowclan.:(. I hope the 6th book is really good!

River of Fire is a.m.a.z.i.n.g!! Sure, some parts of this book were rubbish, but this book was outstanding!

Things that were rubbish:

1.) The thing between Alderheart and Velvet... no thank you

2.) Briarlight's death. That was harsh. Briarlight has been with me through this whole sub series! She was special to me!

Things I liked:

1.) The name Twigbranch. Personally, I find that full of meaning.

2.) The thing between Violetshine and Tree! Props to Hawking for pointing that out!

3.) How the storm and fire brought the Clans together!

I'm not sure how I feel about Tigerstar as a leader. Or how he was brought up from the dead.

Wow. Just wow. WHY DID ROWANCLAW HAVE TO DIE??? That battle was amazing, though!!!! I was surprised that there were still more rogues!

Just to point this out: I FULLY TRUST YARROWLEAF NOW! She is a great mother! ((POO ON YOU NETTLE!))

Ooooooooooooh! Jayfeather…. wow man. Your speech was deep! I am starting to love Jayfeather now!

Leafstar: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??? At first I loved her, and thought she was a sane cat, but now I'm not too sure!

Fuzzball is so cute!

A few problems with this volume, and the series, as a whole:

Bramblestar thinks strays can't join Clans under any conditions, even though he brought strays/kittypets into the Clan in Bramblestar's Storm, and it's kinda Thunderclan's thing.

Jayfeather somehow doesn't care about Starclan prophecies. He was at the center of one a few arcs ago!!

Medicine cats just casually committed the taboo of sharing their visions while at the moonpool, before even telling their leader or mulling it over.

Bramblestar just put Leafstar on the spot at a Gathering, over a prophecy no one is even sure about.

Tigerheart gets promoted to Clan leader after he runs away with Dovewing and has kits with her. Other cats have ascended to leader or medicine cat roles despite inter-Clan romances, but they sacrificed everything for their duty because it's prohibited by the Warrior code. Meanwhile stupid Tigerheart gets to have his cake and eat it, too!

Once I'm done with the Vision of Shadows arc and a novella collection, I'm done with the Warriora franchise. I'll reread my favorites someday, but nothing new.

Bramblestar is awful at naming warriors. Twigbranch. 😭 Why. He basically named a cat stick stick and thought his explanation for it was redeemable or something.😭 That's unforgivable. Almost all the other names he came up with were bad too. Bramblestar must have some kind of suffix wheel in his den that he spins before every warrior ceremony.😭 Alderheart is lucky he's a medicine cat and Jayfeather named him. Otherwise he could have been named Aldersnake something.😭

This one was really great, there was so much going on which helped keep the story moving. I loved fuzz ball, he was the perfect short term character, and I was sad to see him go. Also Briarlight should NOT have died, her character was so great and didn’t deserve that end.

Rounding down to three stars, but it was a good Warriors book. However I just can't get over some of these new names. I'm a name purist and think the Erins should utilize a Warriors name randomizer.

This book wasn't bad, it's just that the series is not living up to my expectations. it feels like the first 3 books could have been finished in a super edition, and the other 3 in an other. But the whole series is (at least to me,) dragged out for no reason. :( it makes me sad....

I don’t know why, but I’ve found myself in the middle of a major Warriors kick right now. I could not wait to get this book from the moment it was released and just wanted my previous read to be finished so that I could get to this one. Despite my anticipation, this book was average. Definitely good by earlier Warriors book standards, but not nearly as exciting as Darkest Night. I feel like the authors rushed into publishing Tigerheart’s Shadow and as a result there wasn’t much to explore in this book. It was really just a lot of waiting around for Tigerstar to return and rebuild ShadowClan as he did by the end of his Super Edition. The conflicts were mostly the same for the first three-quarters of the book: will Tree find a place amongst the Clans? How will the prophecy be fulfilled with only three Clans left? Will ShadowClan and SkyClan ever get along? Where does Twigpaw truly belong? Of course all of these problems were resolved by the end, but the first few chapters just seemed to reiterate them to the point where they didn’t even seem like pressing issues anymore, just things I wanted to resolve already. The book really picked up in the end as this one met up with where Tigerheart’s Shadow left off, but I don’t think it should take until the end of a book for things to start happening. Also there was a certain romance introduced in this book that felt extremely forced, unnecessary, and artificial I imagine the next book will probably be better since there’s no need to drag the plot on as we wait to catch up with a Super Edition that should have been published after this one rather than before. Like I said, this one was just average. It wasn’t terrible, but it definitely wasn’t up to the caliber of Darkest Night which came just before it.

So much happened in this book and I really was not prepared for it! First off! The Erin Hunters are trying to kill me slowly…. Because I’ve not been a fan of them making characters I like, into characters I want to smack upside the head! Like why did you have to do Sparkpelt so dirty like that! I know she has always been hotheaded and quick to react and judge but, I feel like before this book she was somewhat able to see reason and be understanding… Like I was waiting for her and Twigbranch to have a heart to heart or something while Sparkpelt was mentoring her but no, she was just a miserable little turd the whole time and was so hard on poor Twigbranch. Obviously I am happy they kind of made up or at least respect each other but it was still really annoying.
I am still not over the whole Rowanstar thing, like that was just…. I can’t even put it into words because he was such a respectable cat. That being said I am so glad that he was able to die a leaders death because he deserved that. And speaking of death…. My sweet, beautiful Briarlight…. Oh did I cry…. I was not ready for that and poor Jayfeather! Blaming himself…. She will be missed.
I am so proud of Twigbranch! She finally found somewhere she belongs! I can’t wait to see her thrive even more in ThunderClan!
And I’m also happy Violetshine is happy in SkyClan, though I have no idea what she sees in that tom Tree…. He’s something else.
Sorry I know this review is all over the place but I just had so many thoughts and feelings over this book lol. But one more thing! I was getting so stressed with the whole Alderheart and Velvet story line…. Like please no more forbidden medicine cat romances, my heart can’t handle them because they never turn out well…. Like ever!

There are a lot of reviews complaining about the writing quality of this volume. Well, the series is for entertainment, so it was never meant to be Great Literature.
Really the main problem with this volume is that they released the Super Edition Tigerheart's Shadow before this book and the previous one. I can't imagine why, because it spoils almost every plot point that might otherwise have caused suspense. So practically the entire book is just stuff we already knew, more or less. If someone is reading this series and has not read Tigerheart's Shadow, do NOT read it until after books 4 and 5 of Vision Of Shadows! Really the books should have just been planned to include the action of Tigerheart's Shadow in the main arc or something, although they clearly don't want another main series from Dovewing's POV. It certainly should not have been released when it was. (Actually, this book could just have been more scenes in Tigerheart's Shadow, since it happened concurrently, if you wanted a boring spoilery Super Edition the way they organised it.)
I suppose since multiple writers work on this, they wanted the Tigerheart backstory to be set in concrete beforehand, and profit from a release as fast as possible but in terms of us readers it's just unproductive.
So it's hard to rate the book, since in itself it's not fair that the official release schedule spoiled most things that would otherwise have caused suspense.
It's okay in itself. I felt a bit more sympathetic to Twigpaw in this volume, and I like Alderheart. But it was a bit underwhelming compared to, say, books 2 and 3 of the arc.

Not only for junior readers, but adults who love stories

about cats will love these books. I've been reading this
series from the very beginning and I've never been
disappointed. Full of adventure, thrills, love, humor, and
sadness. It's an absolutely amazing series! I always find
myself lost in each new book and when it ends hoping
the next one will arrive soon. Erin Hunter is an amazing
author!!!!

This was almost a filler book, just leading up to the finale, although I'm glad to see Twigbranch (Twigbranch?? Really??) and Violetshine (now there's a good name) finally making up their minds. Tree's new role as mediator is exactly what I'd hoped for, in terms of fantasy cats' governmental reforms, but I'm surprised that it happened so quickly and without opposition (though maybe the opposition arrives in the next book?). I hope these poor characters get to have some peace after book 6...

"River of Fire" by Erin Hunter

The book River Of Fire is, in my opinion, going to bring a great conclusion in the final book of A Vision Of Shadows. It is nice how the cats are completely oblivious to what Tigerheart, now Tigerstar, was doing with Dovewing! The Super Edition Tigerheart’s Shadow really brings the book together. Leafstar seems upset that Shadowclan is in Skyclan’s camp. I loved the book! Hey Erin Hunter, what’s coming next?

The Erin's have finally given us Jayfeather whump. Nothing serious thank goodness (I fear when they kill Jayfeather off now), but several amusing scenes that should make you laugh and smile.

That's all you should need to read this book.
