A NEW ONGOING SERIES from Lumberjanes creator GRACE ELLIS and talented newcomer SHAE BEAGLE that tells a story of monsters, romance, and magical hijinks! The first arc also includes an additional short story with artist KATE LETH! Fantasy creatures are living typical, unremarkable lives alongside humans, and barista Julie strives to be the most unremarkable of all. Normal job, normal almost-girlfriend, normal...werewolf transformations that happen when she gets upset? Yikes! But all bets are off when she and her centaur best friend Chet find themselves in the middle of a magical conspiracy. Will Julie and Chet be able to save their friends? Is Julie's dogged determination to be normal a lost cause? Who's going to watch the coffee shop while our heroes are out saving the world?? These questions and more will be answered in MOONSTRUCK, coming July 19 from Image Comics.
Grace Ellis is a writer best known for co-creating and co-writing Lumberjanes, a New York Times bestselling, Eisner and GLAAD Award-winning comic, though you won't hear her brag about it unless you ask her directly. She has written several episodes of the animated series Bravest Warriors. Grace lives in Columbus, Ohio, where she co-parents a preternaturally smart cat, even though she's more of a dog person.
I've been waiting for the first issue of this comic to drop for months now, so the arrival has been more than satisfying, to say the least.
In Moonstruck we have: Fantasy creatures are living typical, unremarkable lives alongside humans, and barista Julie strives to be the most unremarkable of all. Normal job, normal almost-girlfriend, normal...werewolf transformations that happen when she gets upset? Yikes! But all bets are off when she and her centaur best friend Chet find themselves in the middle of a magical conspiracy.
List of things that wove their way into my heart:
• The friendship between Julie and Chet, which basically consists of puns and mom-esque advice. Which is to say that their friendship brings this story to vibrant life.
This is how you get to me because I do the exact same thing when saying goodbye. #Goals.
• Chet's relatable feelings of being head over heels for someone who either doesn't feel the same way or is just completely clueless about you.
• The capturing art really plays to the overarching theme's strength. I mean, need I say more:
Also, Cass is definitely another new favorite thanks to the above.
• The world building in Moonstruck has me immensely intrigued, which rarely happens for me as of late. The whole notion of blending the magical with realism is something I'm always up for, so I’m excited to see what’s next in store for the crew.

Moonstruck is exactly what I want to fulfill my light-hearted fantasy needs. With beautifully soft colours and rounded lines, Shae Beagle's artwork is the perfect fit for such an endearing and adorable cast of quirky dorks stumbling through life - with the added layer of them all being creatures from fantasy/myth. The diversity in body type, race, sexual orientation, gender identity feels natural and is a giant plus.
This is a delight and I'm super excited to read more from the series. A first issue done right!
Surprisingly (given my comics wheelhouse) this is one that I had heard/knew nothing about in advance.
This was a complete "Hmm, this looks cute and interesting moment" as I pulled it off the shelf of my local comic book store ( coupled with the recommendation of the owner, who knows my tastes since I've been goingvthere for more years than I care to recall.
But I digress... This was a promising start to what I hope will be an enjoyable series. This was an intelligent opener, with smart dialogue, likable characters and an intriguing premise. And the adorable art style matches the tone nicely.
What a lovely/cute story! This is one I will follow for sure. The art is so cute and the characters are already so attaching -the friendship between Julie and Chet is GOALS! *.* also it's diverse! So yayy.
Beautiful art, queer characters and also magical creatures!! The story itself doesn’t hook me in but I appreciate the existence of this comic, even if it’s a coffee shop trope.
Well, this was fun! I needed a comic book break between two heavy reads & I am glad I picked up MOONSTRUCK #1 by Grace Ellis & C0. Grace is the creator of LUMBERJANES, one of my all-time favorite series so I am excited to see where this goes. Magical creatures, humor, crushes, werewolves. I'm about that life.
I absolutely adored this comic! It was exactly what I was looking for with cups of coffee, drama and diversity! This comic also makes me miss being a barista.
Julie is super excited about how well her date with Selena turned out. She talks about this with her best friend Chet, the centaur. Oh by the way, this coffee shop hosts a variety of magical creatures. Julie also turns into a werewolf.. sometimes.
I feel like the first issue is just setting up some of the plot. I'm looking forward to the next issue.
I wanted to like this graphic novel more than I actually did. The story takes place among a group of friends who work at varying coffee shops around their school's campus. In a world that is both our own and not our own, the college-aged characters are a variety of different mythical creatures. Some are centaurs, some are vampires, and some are straight up ghosts. There are humans in the story, and everyone's different "species" is treated with a similar kind of political correctness/sensitivity that race is today. Julie, the main character, is very insecure about her werewolf nature and takes people's comments VERY sensitively throughout the story. When a taxi driver calls her "lassie" she assumes it's a species-ist slur against her werewolfishness (is that a word...??). She starts crying right there in the taxi as the driver (who is clearly Scottish) explains that he was just using a colloquial term for a lady where he's from. Only when her friends console her does she move on. This is just one example of the nature of our main character. I didn't find it sympathetic and I kind of found her annoying. If that was the author's intent, it was too overt for me to get on board with it.
I found the pacing/structure of this GN confusing at times. It jumps from Julie and her life to panels that are from a book that Julie loves that mirrors that plotline of Julie's life, to a magazine-like advice column for magical beings. Once the story's plot started to pick up, I found it a little confusing, especially because many of Julie's friends can see into the future and are constantly having visions. Naturally, the visions are cryptic and it was all SO much to keep track of by the end. There were a few story lines included in this volume that I have NO idea how they connect to the larger plot other than that the author needed more characters in her story. Perhaps some of that will come around in the subsequent volumes.
What I did love was the artwork. It leans more towards the cartoonish side of graphic novels, but it works for the type of story we're reading. Shae Beagle, the artist, includes just the right amount of cute in her artwork. I really liked it.
“Okay, bye! I love you, be safe, make good choices, don't talk to strangers unless they look like my type!”
Hilarious, adorable, beautiful art, lots of well done diversity, sweet friendships - Moonstruck is all I could ask for in a graphic novel. I loved the friendship between Julie and Chet so much. It's the kind of friendship I love to see in stories and it worked really well in graphic novel form. The world building was wonderful and intriguing, and I can't wait to see where Grace Ellis goes next!
This is!! So cute!! I already need more! I love all the character designs and quirks and the story is already so engaging. Plus the artwork is perfect!
The art is very soft, from the colors to the line work, and I love it! I’ve noticed that a lot of comics seem to have very hard defining colors, a lot of them make for beautiful scenes but they seem to always want to POP! out of the page. For this series, I really doubt that art style would fit the overall tone so I’m really happy that the overall look of the panels are very soft, but still bright and eye-catching. I also love the character designs; they’re each so unique in style and shape. Not only do we have all sorts of fantastical creatures but also varying body types for the more human looking characters and realistic models for the more supernatural-looking characters! It’s weird to fixate on body types, but I like to read stories sometimes that can show me all kinds of different people and make them all seem normal—even though in this case none of the characters are what we would consider ‘normal’.
Story: 5/5
Like most first issues, this one has the main focus on setting up the characters and the world they live in. So this issue is full of cute, or not so cute, moments between the characters that give you a quick summation of the characters. Each character appears to be different, and not just in style but in personality as well.
Overall: 5
I’m really excited that I bought the next issue when I picked up this one, because I can’t wait to see where this story goes. If you want more diverse characters and love, then look no further because you’ll find it here! There is diversity in body type (not just oooo! he has hooves or he’s part bull), race, and sexual orientation. So far there is a confirmed lesbian relationship, for those of you interested in some cute, awkward F/F love that isn’t just a side note but the main attraction!
Rereading the first few issues while I wait for Vol 2. The art is so soft and cute, even in the creepy moments. The characters are likable, relatable even, so that you care about what's going to happen to them. The one downside imo is the favorite book series pages are kind of lame and become a chore to read.
The plot is average. It's cute one time read. The illustrations and art style is amazing. I really enjoyed the color scheme as well. I'm reallyhoping for the plot to get better with the series. Selena and Julie definitely needs alot of working. Chet is my favourite and I love their friendship.
I wasn't sure about this comic, but I fell COMPLETELY in love with the story and characters right away. I now imagine myself as a supernatural barista hahaha can't wait to read the next one
