Współczesne dzieło jednoczy sferę potoczności i artystyczności, wykracza w teorii poza sferę estetyczną i docieka jej warunków konstytuujących.

Danto's essay ultimately argues that art cannot be understood purely through its physical properties or its ability to imitate reality. Instead, it requires a broader theoretical framework provided by the artworld, which constantly evolves and redefines what is considered art. This framework helps us recognize and appreciate art beyond its superficial appearance, taking into account the creative intentions and cultural contexts that inform it.

For anyone interested in Arthur C. Danto's theory (perhaps definition and/or creteria) of art, this is a great supplementary text, though not a fundamental one. I would recommend perhaps some other, more accessible texts/books such as his book What Art Is or maybe The Transfiguration of the Commonplace (though the latter also isn't an easy read - but what art theory book is?).

All in all, I personally admire Danto's writing style as well as his theories. The parallels he makes with mythology, cultural studies and various periods of art (considering his main focus is modern art) just prove the vast amount of knowledge he possesses and his creative writing abilities.

Very important
Similar to dickie in that they both rely on theory of art
BUT more on the philosophy of meaning than institutional placement

Dickie borrows from Danto to emphasize his point that the artworld confers status . He rejects earlier claims that aesthetic positioning relies on beauty and instead it’s the sociological ties. Definition of work of art “An artifact that has had the status of “candidate for appreciation” conferred upon it by the artworld.” “Aesthetic qualities do not grant art status — institutional framing does” quotes from LLM .. verify

Danto emphasizes how the meaning behind an object + reliance on art theory places it within the ARTWORLD
“What makes something art is that it embodies meaning—it is about something.”
“To see something as art requires something the eye cannot descry—an atmosphere of artistic theory.”
“What in the end makes the difference between a Brillo box and a work of art… is a certain theory of art.”
“To be a work of art is to be something whose identity depends upon an interpretation.”

Dickie = what framing allows something to be perceived as art. Institutional framing
Danto = framing yes, but additionally thought = why something is art. Interpretive meaning within the context of artworld
