Expect Greatness, by John Hawkins, provides some excellent and pragmatic principles for use in excelling in life. In as much as it is motivating to read, the book is not a motivational presentation, so much as a textbook or manual on how to approach life and reach one’s potential. Hawkins starts off with some very powerful dissections of the process of living, introducing The Four Levels of Life, leading up to greatness. This excerpt is just one of many powerful ones: “… greatness is not defined by your success but by the success of the people around you.” Other golden rules such as developing one’s creed, establishing the Why for one’s life, short versus long-term goals, and so much more, talk to one on a practical and real level and can be used by anyone. The author provides plenty of anecdotes, real-life examples, to illustrate the principles he presents. This is book you can read in a couple hours, and if you’re interested in advancing your life, achieving more than just “survival” or “success” according to mediocrity (money), and you want to reach for more, your potential, even greatness, then read the book.

Expect Greatness is a great book from John Hawkins. He speaks about living a life of excellence which I found enriching especially at a time when we are so consumed with social media and forget to live our true authentic selves. I like that John is a God fearing man thus some of his principles I also apply. He encourages us to have hope, faith and love through out our lives. He reminds us that excellence is not perfection and that we should take everything a step at a time “plus one”. John also reminds us to have gratitude and have the right reasons behind all our actions.

I loved reading this book especially because after every chapter there were questions to make you evaluate yourself. So until one does so, it’s the only way to get the most out of this book.

Are you a survivor, successful, significant or a legacy? Read the book to find out.

As someone who has read a decent amount in the personal development space, I didn't find much new here. If I had to call out the one idea that stuck most it's the idea of having a personal motto/creed and using that to guide you whenever you make decisions. The scriptures presented in the book were often softened to try to make them palatable to a broader audience, so while I appreciate John bringing his faith to bear, I think he should have either been more directed towards a distinctly Christian audience or constrained it to a smaller portion of the book.

I'm approached by authors to read and review their books very often, however I limit what I read to topics/concepts that align with my core. I can honestly say this book struck a solid nerve, anyone who is starting out or looking to get to that next level will be pleasantly surprised.

This book is NOT a book on how to run your business, many of those already exist. Rather this book is about your own well being, what makes up your core values and how can you align those to help you make better choices moving forward.

Excellence isn’t Perfection

There are a number of take aways in this easy to read book. Plenty of spots for open questions and notes - though they’re a little more challenging to write in the Kindle. Setting that aside, the overarching theme is well conveyed - to expect greatness and live a life of excellence, you must live beyond living for yourself. The ripple effects of your life lived well, with intention and looking to advance the welfare of others will lead you to greatness and excellence.

A thought provoking read!

John does an excellent job of giving the reader much to think about. The ideas he points out might seem like common sense but it take work to place these ideas in action. A short but deeply moving read.

I loved it

Excellent. It opened my mind to potential possibilities of greatness. He mixed biblical knowledge with his leadership knowledge which made it really applicable to me.
