The Guards Of Attala #1

Her Alien Bodyguard

Rate this book

Diana Bennet is Earth’s last hope. The brilliant scientist and explorer leads her research team across the galaxy to the snow planet Attala in search of a mysterious compound that can jump start our dying sun.

Attala leaders are honoured to host the humans and pledge to give Diana everything she needs. And one thing she doesn’t: the Attalan Guard, an elite group of mate-less warriors tasked with keeping Diana and her team safe in the remote ice mountains.

Diana’s brooding bodyguard, Mallyk, shadows her every move. He’s strong and capable and makes her feel things in places she’s forgotten about, but there’s no time to worry about her D.O.A. love life when the fate of a planet hangs in the balance. Her orders are clear: complete the mission and return to Earth.

Mallyk has other plans. And they all involve getting the feisty adventuress in his giant fur-lined bed. His insatiable lust for the Earth woman has him questioning his role with the Guard and cursing the day he took their oath of celibacy. Will his loyalty to the Guard stop him from claiming his long-awaited mate?

Scientists go to another planet to excavate a special mineral /rock that can save earth's sun.
Alien culture has fated mates. Taboo relationship ensues.
The story is pretty bland but what annoyed me was the heroine.
She was built up to be this ultra woman that could do anything.
So smart,so capable. But once they land on the alien planet anytime she is told no she puffs up and picks a fight or squawks about how she will do whatever anyway.
This put her firmly in my "hot-head" & "too stupid to live" shelves.

Generic characters and plot

I think the insta-love ruined this one for me. There was simply no character or story development. I like some of this writer's other work but I won't be continuing this series.

I realize this is a fictional story but if you're going to write fiction you can't entirely ignore facts.
-When one of the woman is telling the female pilot what is in an injectable medication she lists Diamox and acetazolamide; they are the same drug. Also if a person was told they could use a time release adrenaline every two hours, they'd be dead. Time release doesn't work that slowly hence its name.
-When listing pack supplies it is clearly stated that her tent was removed to help cut down on weight. Then when she's packing up crystals in her backpack at the top of the mountain she remarks how she leaves her tent to make room for more crystals. Nothing like littering an alien's planet, huh?

The rest of the story was just a mess. No woman with this heroine's whiny, snotty attitude would be given command of a ship. She gossips with the crew of "girls", demands everything is done her way, and back talks any alien who tries to rationally and reasonably point out errors in her plans. By page thirty, I was hoping for her death.

These characters read as immature teenagers: flexing of attitudes and trying to flash muscles and cleavage to get what they wanted. Not only would I not recommend this story, nor would I not seek out anything else by this author.

Mira Maxwell's Scifi romance is excellent! I've added her to the short list of my favorite scifi romance writers and look forward to reading book two.

Earth is in serious jeopardy of dying because their sun is finally failing. Their scientists have determined their only hope is to find a source for Eclaydian to jump start the sun. They found a source for the rare element, but it is found on the planet Attala located on the far side of our galaxy.

The competition to lead and fill positions for this vital expedition is fierce, but Diana Barnes, a brilliant scientist who has climbed every major mountain on Earth is the best qualified. She quickly assembles a stellar team to add to the ranks, all of them female. They must reach Attala as quickly as possible. She lists off her priorities: 1) visit the new to Earth planet 2) establish diplomatic relations with the leaders 3) convince them to let us mine for the precious Eclaydian 4) return to Earth as quickly as possible 5) restart our sun and save Earth.

They were able to communicate with their leaders and were given assurances of a warm welcome and assistance. Their pilot, Margo disengages the warp drive as they prepare to enter the atmosphere of Attala. They expected a bumpy landing, but not the 6 G's they experienced. Margo calmly states that they have lost their horizontal stabilizers, then the vertical stabilizers, smokes starts spilling from the console. Margo states that life support is now on backup, then calls out that their engines have stalled out. They crash into Attala at a 90 degree angle. Their engineer, Natalie appears to have a broken leg and their doctor, Savannah stabilized the leg and inflated a temporary cast around it. Everyone else has only minor scratches and a few cuts. They were incredibly lucky.
Margo determined that electromagnetic waves around the planet caused the failures and crash.

It's snowing hard and visibility is almost non-existent. Diana determines that she must step out of their ship to try to get their barrings, perhaps triangulate their location somewhere 1-2 clicks from their intended landing site. She steps out into at least 4' of new snow and looks up to see approximately 30 men racing to their site.

The men are all at least 7' tall and although it is freezing cold, they are 'dressed' in leather breech cloths, wide leather belts, boots, and wear a fur cape over their shoulders. They are running in formation with their leader at the head. To be a guard they must be willing to give up everything for the safety of their people. If by the age of twenty-five, they have not found their mate they can be given enhancements that will make them taller, stronger, faster, with enhanced senses of smell and hearing. But, they may never see their families again and must take a vow of celibacy on pain of death. Commander Mallyk has just come face to face with his mate.

Thus begins a delightful tale that I found hard to break away from until the end. Adventures, scary vicious creatures, clandestine trysts, the threat of execution by his fellow guardsmen. But we do get our HEA. Now, on to book 2 to find out what happened to Margo back at the space ship. A most worthy book to read if you enjoy scifi romance.

On a crucial scientific mission, Diana Barnes and her team are the first Earth travelers to go to the Attalan system, and no one knows quite what to expect. With our sun dying, this mission must be successful. Diana needs permission to extract the element Eclaydian to jump start Earth’s sun; to do that, they will need to negotiate with the Attalans, whom they have never met. With little time to plan, and only two months to return to Earth with the mined element, they are all feeling the pressure. As they break into the atmosphere, sudden unexpected electromagnetic interference causes the loss of two stabilizers and their electrical systems. The smell of smoke is not reassuring… and then the engines stall and they crash! Returning to consciousness, all Diana can see out the front of the ship is ice and snow.

Deciding to go outside and look for something to help the Attalans find them, Diana dons a suit. Until she does a thermal scan, she doesn’t see the group of 30 very tall men running toward them. She is not sure if these are the aliens they have been negotiating with, but she is surprised at their being scantily dressed in the freezing cold climate. The biggest surprise is when she is thrown over Commander Mallyk’s shoulders and his men grab the rest of her crew to run the 20 miles back to the city walls for their safety! And then Mallyk tells her she is his mate! How are they going to be able to complete their mission in time? How will they fix their ship when they are dragged off to the city? Will Mallyk be permitted to throw away his vows of celibacy pledged as a guard to claim his mate?

There are so many questions raised in this fast-moving book. The characters are strong and stubborn, which makes for a good story. The tension keeps the reader’s attention to how things will play out. I would recommend this book for the story. However, it does need editing to fix the spellings and incorrect or missing words. I hope that issue will be corrected and more attention to editing in future books.

***I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

This was the first book I've read from this author but I'll certainly be on the lookout for more. The book had an interesting storyline – female scientists mission save Earth – male guards protect and aid Earth scientists. It's also independent and determined women vs. Super gorgeous and determined guards. There's always some hilarious fun to be had when you have a battle of the sexes.

Diana Bennet is one of the scientists who have the fate of Earth and humankind resting on her shoulders. Mallyk is the commander of the elite guards who are tasked with protecting and aiding the scientists of Earth. Mallyk and Diana have to fight their deep attraction for each other in order to do their duty. Mallyk took an oath of celibacy and Diana for the first time in her life feels desire for Mallyk. Diana's desire for Mallyk makes things hard and complicated since intimacy for any guard member means a death sentence.

There are so many challenges these two characters have to face. Can you explore your feelings and still do your duty? How are they going to handle Diana going back to Earth? Will Mallyk face execution for his love of Diana? Can he face deceiving his fellow guards and breaking his oaths and leave his own planet for his love? This was a really enjoyable read with interesting characters and some funny situations. I look forward to more books in this series. Hopefully we can also learn more about the culture of Attala and it's people.

I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC of this book, and the opinion expressed is my own. I really liked reading this alien SF romance. I enjoyed this version of the "fated mate" trope, and I loved the way both Mallyk and Diana were strong enough to focus on achieving their professional mission, and honorable enough to act openly and honestly about their relationship, despite the horrible consequences. The sexy scenes were just right - hot and steamy but not clinical. The characters were well developed, believable, and mostly likable (though Diana is a little arrogant at first), so it was easy to accept the way their relationship developed. The only complaint I have is the dearth of actual science in this SF alien romance. I mean: a mineral that will revive Earth's dying sun? In a timetable of mere months? That's not quite how a star operates. Or - Practice sophisticated genetic manipulation of adult males, but execute them if they have sex? Vasectomies are a far less lethal barrier to genetic contamination. I had a hard time with such far-fetched scenarios but those whose sole focus is the love story will not be bothered. On the whole, I liked it well enough to look out for the soon-to-be-published sequel. Author Mira Maxwell writes well and the editing is top-notch. Go for it.

Earth's sun is dying. In a effort to mine the mineral needed to possibly save the sun and Earth, a team is sent to a remote planet to retrieve it. Sounds like most sci-fi books-right? Wrong! In this story the team is made up of all women. Maybe Earth considers women equal in the future. Anyway... after crash landing on the planet the women find they may not be as prepared as they thought. Being assigned guards for their protection doesn't set well with the commander of the team Diana. Mallyk didn't expect to find his mate among the visitors from Earth. Loyalty, duty and oaths threaten to keep the two apart. Will they find a way to complete their missions and to be together? I really enjoyed this story. This is the first book by Ms Maxwell I have read. With their being at least four other women on the team, I'm guessing there will be that many more stories in this series. I can't wait. Hunky aliens and strong women make for great reads.

I liked this book overall, but I was a little, teeny-tiny bit turned off by how Diana brushed aside Mal's oaths and basically urged him to get busy with her even though it would cause a whole slew of problems for the guy down the road. Like, I get the mating instinct taking over and all that, but she had no intention of walking away from the duty she'd been given by her people, yet she didn't seem to think his duty/oaths were worth upholding.

I'm not down with that. Not at all.

That said, I like the setup for both the mission Diana and her crew are on and the potential for change I can see in the social structuring of the Attalans. Plus, there's the intriguing story of the first guard and his lady love. I do enjoy when a lone warrior fights the man!

Dangerous times on a dangerous world with the fate of Earth hanging in the balance. Throw in some sexy shenanigans and a whole lot of snow and ice and you're set!

Captain Diana Bennet is leading a team to planet Attala on a mining expedition. Earth is counting on Elizabeth get a hold of some Eclaydian to jump start the dying sun. The mission must be finished in a few months to save planet Earth. Commander of the Guard Mallyk had dreamed of becoming an Attalan warrior ever since he was a little boy. Mallyk's dream came true when he was 25 and in exchange for exile and celibacy, he received gene therapy that enhanced his abilities. Mallyk has never questioned his choice until he meets the beautiful Diana ... who's his mate. Diana doesn't believe the handsome Mallyk is her mate until he gives her a toe curling kiss that makes her forget all her worries, then all she can think about is Mallyk. Mallyk wants Diana but Attalan warriors are forbidden from claiming a mate on pain of death. Can Diana and Mallyk have a future together?

Mira Maxwell delivers an exciting, suspenseful and steamy story that ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read Her Alien Protector, Book 2 of The Guards of Attala series.

Found this book to very entertaining and enjoyable read. I like the whole concept of fated mate and I also like how both Mallyk and Diana were strong enough to a certain extent to fight there feeling to stay focused on achieving their professional mission. I didn't like how Diana brushed aside the significant of Mal's oaths and mating when he explained why he couldn't act on his feelings. She urged him to act on his feelings anyways knowing implications that it would cause. Knowing fully that she had no intention of giving up or walking away from her people mission. That was selfish of her to think that Mal's duty/oaths wasn't important or worthy enough to upholds that how I saw it anyways. Overall a enjoyable read looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no minority compensation was received the opinions I have expressed are my own.

*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC version of this book. My opinions are mine and truthful.*

HOLY SHIT THIS BOOK WAS GREAT. With that being said...Diana is the kind of heroine I like. She fights for what she believes in, and she has a pretty strong personality. She has to though, because she is the Captain of this journey they're on. Finding Ecalaydian is the sole purpose of the human women going to this planet. Everything changes when the guard comes running with Mallyk leading them. And boy oh boy is he a hottie. I want him for myself. The chemistry between him and Diana is off the charts. This book was completely satisfying. It made me really interested in the planet and I want to know more about EVERYTHING. With that being said, Mira Maxwell is an amazing author and I can't go to sleep without reading the next book. I'm off to do just that! If you love SciFi romance, please read this book, it's too amazing to pass up. You'll get just as hooked as I did.

Good story

A team of five women are in a mission to Attala to retrieve an element that will save Earths sun. Diana is the mission captain. She is a scientist specializing in attic environments, and an accomplished mountaineer. Their arrival in Attala doesn't go as planned. Atmospheric interference causes them to crash land. Ya think the Attalian government would have warned them. They are rescued by the Attalian guard.

Mallik is commander of the Attalian guard. He is a bit exasperated by the beautiful Earth Commander, Diana. It doesn't take him long to realize she is his mate. The guard are enhanced Attaliens, and having a mate is forbidden, with a penalty of death, or go on the run in the wilds.. Diana and Mallik can't deny the mating pull.

A light and steamy fated mate alien story that ended in a cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of cliffhanger endings. I liked the story and will read the next book.

Space travel, find a mate, save Earth..

All she has to do is travel through space to an alien planet, meet their scientists, retrieve the mineral that will kick start the sun and save Earth from dying. Easy as 1,2,3 right?! Nope. Not when your bodyguard assigned to you is calling to your inner most desires and then even worse, he took an oath as one of the guard to remain celibate. Talk about frustrations and heat rising. The back and forth between them is definitely nail biting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved the action and plot twists as well. Mira did an amazing job creating a story that was unique to all the other alien romance novels out there. Usually they are behaving like cavemen but not the guards. I am already on to my next one in the series excited to see which fated mates are next!

I really liked the plot of this story. Trying to find a way to jump start our sun and sending a team across the galaxy to find the materials is just like an episode of Stargate SG-1 except for the fact that the whole team from Earth is female. It is a short story and fairly well written and edited. The author put some thought into building this alien world and it seemed unique to me.

I viewed the ending as somewhat of a cliffhanger. With everything that was going on in this story, it feels like the main characters were given a HFN and not a HEA, especially with the way the city is run and its laws.

I will definitely be picking up the second book int he series.

This is a great sci fi romance with a team of strong women sent to an alien planet on a mission to save Earth.

The way Mira Maxwell tells the story had me not wanting to put this down. Elizabeth's strong will and determination to finish what she was sent to do make her push away her attraction to Mallyk, the head of the guards sent to bring them safely to the city. Mallyk has an obligation of his own, but is drawn to the feisty Earth Captain. There is something about her that pulls to his instincts to protect her. Time will only tell whether they give in to each other and still be able to find a way to save Earth. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. I was gifted an ARC for an honest review.

HER ALIEN BODYGUARD

I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the concept of the storyline and the story was very entertaining, with some added action, excitement, and romance. Mallyk and Diana were both likable and strong characters who clashed a little at first but their mate bond soon took care of that with their intense chemistry and connection. I think this series is going to be filled with strong woman and stubborn males, so that should be fun to read. I loved it when my book men/males get all dominant and growly. Looking forward to reading Lodyn and Margo's story. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This is not your run of the mill science fiction romance. The heroine, Elizabeth Barnes, is the captain of the space craft that has sent out to another planet to obtain a mineral that will allow the Earth's sun to continue to burn. One of the things that I enjoyed was that the crew of the space ship, The Sparrow, was all female. Elizabeth enjoyed the cold weather and was a rock climber. The hero, Mallyk, is the leader of the Guard that lives outside of the city, the why is in my opinion unfair. They do try to fight their feelings for each other. I enjoyed the action and adventure and cannot wait to see what happens next. There is explicit sexual content.

Female scientists are on a mission to save earth and had to go to another planet. The sun was dying and they were trying to find the minerals to spark it on. Mallyk is the commander of the elite guards who are tasked with protecting and aiding the earth scientists. He finds himself attracted to Diana, one of the earth scientists that he is guarding. This is a forbidden romance as any form of intimacy will result in a death sentence. No spoiler here, so you'll need to read the book to find out if they are able to continue their budding romance. A good book with engaging characters and a strong storyline. I received an advance reader copy and voluntarily chose to review this book.

I really loved this book. I really liked Diana because she was dedicated to her mission but also realized along the way that you have to take love where you can find it and for her it just happened to be on a frozen planet with a really sexy alien bodyguard named Mallyk. there were a couple spelling issues but overall the characters and world building were amazing. this is a to be continued senario but the main characters get their personal problem resolved.. it's just the larger issue at hand that still needs to be addresses which is can they save the earth. I would totally recommend this one and I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

The blurb sounded good and I was not disappointed. The story was fast paced, full of a few action scenes, and a romance. I thought it laid out the series well and cannot wait to see how questions raised here are answered. It had a few steamy love scenes but not nasty. Once started I read it all in one sitting as I was hooked early. I really liked the book and want to read more in the series. If you like paranormal romances with a arching plot and some steamy scenes check this one out. I thought Diana and Mallyk's story was a hoot.

A big thank you to Exclusive ARC for the ARC for my honest review. First time reading this author. It was fun and quick. I enjoyed the characters as they were both strong and full of zest. What happens when you get two strong, intelligent people together that both have attitude? Chemistry. It was there and oh so fun to read. Looking forward to the next book. I think that most people who like paranormal (alien) would enjoy this book. Try something different-a different flavor from shifters. Enjoy

I liked the book. Human space Captain Diana's bodyguard, Commander Mallyk, is one hot naaasssty, sexy dude. He's a huge blue gladiator on steroids, and he knows Diana is his fated mate. He's also a kinky dominant! Only he's supposed to be celibate! Oops! YEAH, it could happen!
YEHAW! Ride em Bareback🍌, Cowgirl!🐎🐎🐎🐎

However! The book has a very large number of misspellings throughout.
And it's a cliffhanger!

Holy damn!
I loved this book!
I think I squealed through more than half of it. I have missed sci-fi romance so very much and this hit the spot perfectly. Mallyk and Diana were perfect! I have absolutely zero complaints. Except...*pouting* why does it have to be a cliffhanger? I’m too impatient for that. Oh well, I’ll survive...I think. Highly recommend to anyone with a love for sci-fi. Happy reading!

Liked it a lot but......

I did enjoy this story. Diana was strong and intelligent. Mal is a compassionate leader of his men. I loved the story line and it was a well thought out book. I did feel I was missing something while reading it though. I also felt the story was unfinished. The ending felt more like a soft cliffhanger, the big issue of them getting home was not resolved. There were also little details that weren't in the book that really needed to be. Overall it's a light read with great character chemistry.

Blegh

Everything that I dislike in alien romance. An hour into meeting him, Diana agrees that she's his fated mate even though she a) didn't know such things existed, and b) doesn't have the biology to support it. There was no world building and no character building either. I had to stop reading at 43% because I wanted to crack the screen on my Kindle. I won't bother with this author again.

Two people, not looking for love, find a love of legends

Diana is a woman on a mission, not in the cliche kind of way, she is the Captain of a ship headed to Attala to mine what is needed to save Earth's Sun, and thus Earth. Setting aside her mission for personal pleasure isn't going to happen, and oddly, she's hurt when Mallyk doesn't object to get view, then again as head of the Guards of Attala he understands protecting others, and putting the mission first.

It was an okay story. Very intense, exciting, suspenseful, complicated and so much more. They each have their own issues to work through before mating with each other and there is the big factor that needs the most help. Must be a series which I don't mind as long as they are stand alone books. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.
