Beyond Harvard: All-new street smarts from the world of Mark H. McCormack

Rate this book
The publication of What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School in 1984 introduced the world to the Mark H. McCormack street smart, nuggets of wisdom offering accessible insights into how to get ahead in the real world of business.

McCormack died in 2003, but his legacy and business philosophy live on. Beyond Harvard celebrates his genius with a collection of new street smarts based on interviews with the people who knew, worked with and were influenced by him - colleagues, clients and competitors alike.

From advice on managing people and building relationships, through to the best negotiating tips and how to grow a business, a stellar line-up of contributors from the business, media and sporting worlds show us how a brush with McCormack could change forever the way you do business - and live your life.

Learn from the outside-the-box thinking that encouraged a nervous Wimbledon committee to sign up to IMG-style merchandising; why it pays to hold your nerve when you reach a negotiating impasse; how the rituals and routines of the sporting world can work in business too, and even how re-using incoming paperclips or keeping 3x5 notecards to hand can contribute to success.

Beyond Harvard is both an affectionate testament to the man who invented the sports marketing industry and a worthy successor to the original Harvard book, offering a new generation of street smarts to anyone looking to improve their business understanding and practice.

Beyond Harvard is put together by contributions of people who have worked with/had a close relationship with Mark Hume McCormack(Founder of IMG, referred to as MHM).

The book doesn’t exactly “teach” you street smarts, but instead gives examples of what MHM did in specific situations. Personally a better title would be “What Would/Did MHM Do?”. I didn’t read Mark’s “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School” but this book is focused on business partners and friends talking about advice given out by Mark or what they’ve observed during their time with Mark at a meeting etc.

Much of the book is common sense but it’s still nice to read and think deeper about them. Decent book, nothing too crazy.

A very inspiring and interesting book to read through the lenses of different people interacting and learning from one person MHM thus showing how much one person can achieve and maintain the same even after life. I definitely want to read the original book, What they don't teach you at Harvard Business School by MHM.

I've previously come across a few people that had "What they don't teach you at Harvard" lined up on their bookshelf and it made me curious as to whether there's something to the hype.

The Beyond Harvard book is a great handbook for people either without any business reasoning or with reasoning but without any imagination as to how to apply reasoning in the real world (if the latter personality type has ever existed?). Mark McCormack, long time CEO (and founder?) of the IMG group breaks down all the business advice that you find completely reasonable and puts them into a real world context.

The format of the book, a lot of short inputs from Mark and other people who knew Mark and his philosophy, works quite well. After a while you get tired of the format and the almost divine admiration for Mark McCormack that makes you think of some crazy ass Indian sex guru instead of a business owner.

Anyway I'm sure the book is really cool for young professionals coming straight from business school out into the real world, whether they are starting their own business or going the corporate way. I learnt a few bits and pieces about how to apply sports logic to business etc.

Sometimes the book just becomes so obvious in its points that you think it's written for an idiot audience which makes you wanna go burn it in the street Hitler-style.

A passage so stupid that I found it hilarious: p.206: "I was once told by an important business leader that I should smile more. The deceptively simple piece of advice was quite serious. He said that if he walked out of a meeting with a frown, his share price could plummet. I now try to smile as much as I can, evne when I'm worried. To be upbeat and positive and let people know that I love my job is simply my responsibility as a leader, and while I don't always succeed (added: no wonder!), this is a really important lesson". Seriously, come on. Where are those matches when I need them...

I got the second book from the "Beyond Harvard" just because the first one written by Mark. H. McCormack was an amazing read and really like the book for the way he presented the tools and skills he was applying, evolving and updating throughout the course of creating the International Management Group.
Why I did not like this book is simply because there wasn`t anything new to add on the first one. The family of Mark H. McCormack, CEO`s of the branches and very closed friends shared their thoughts and the way they applied the principles of the first book in there life and business.
The book is written in a style that I did not like simply because I was feeling reading reviews of "What they don`t teach you in Harvard Business School" and was so plainly written that after the first chapter you really want to leave it aside.
If you read the first book do not go for this one or you`ll be left disappointed.

Some ideas were interesting.
What I didn’t like was:
- godyfying Mark.
- repeating tips.
- the fact that it wasn’t even Mark who wrote it...
