A troubled past is much harder to forget when you have reminders of it every day of your life. But Troy Water’s life is about to change. He finally has nailed a decent job and can prove he is able to make it on his own in the world of corporations and fancy titles. The only thing in his way is the undeniable desire for his new boss.
Life is easy for Lucas McGarber. He has parents who love him, a billion-dollar company and an endless rotation of gorgeous female assistants. At least that was the case until a mix up happens in HR and Lucas ends up with a sexy male assistant who stirs feelings inside of him that he never knew existed.
Now the two of them must choose to fight their feelings, or give in to them. If they make the right choice, their lives could end up happily ever after. If they make the wrong choice, they could spend the rest of their lives wishing for “what if’s” and “can’t have’s.” It’s up to them to figure out which is which in this tale of self-discovery, love and office flirting.

*** Troy has a new job; assistant to one of the city's billionaires. His boss, Lucas, is extremely handsome, fit, and oozes sex appeal, but he can't be crushing on his boss, the boss is straight ! Troy, (touching himself) gets caught in a compromising scene, both funny and embarrassing.... when he works alone on Saturday.... the boss stops by... yikes ! Moving along, the powerful Lucas has an awakening and we discover he's been unhappy, frustrated, and unsatisfied until his desire for Troy took over. He doesn't hesitate to explore, but won't come out of the "closet." This is a lively cast of characters, and Troy is so lovable, but his Dad's an idiot. I liked the story flow, and the hot sexiness. We also get their deep inner thoughts and we see Lucas struggle to understand himself. This is a terrific GFY tale in the expensive world of big money, with men in suits and lots of class.
We get an HEA with surprises and a big-hearted gesture by Lucas... which shows true love. ENJOY ! ===========
1.0001 Stars rounded up because I actually finished it.
What in the actual fuck did I just read? A whiny bitch of an assistant + a douchey, rich playboy = me banging my head against the wall.
Seriously, with little to no communication the whiny assistant "fell in love" with the douchey "straight" playboy boss. Assistant, Troy, had it be his way or the highway, but the boss, Lucas, gave zero thought into "playing it straight". UGH! Then Troy being the whiny bitch he is, runs away like a child.
DNF @ 23% -- and I started skipping pages to see if it got better. It didn't. We were in too many characters' heads without any indication that we were moving perspectives.
This tells the story of Troy Waters an openly gay man who is taken on as Personal Assistant to Lucas McGarber, a serial womaniser. Troy thinks his boss is gorgeous but knows he is strictly off limits until one day when he is clearing out his boss’ desk and comes across a locked drawer. He finds the key and to his amazement, in the drawer is a calendar of nude businessmen. Even more astonishing is October’s picture. It is not hard to guess at what happens next but the events following on tell of heartbreak and hurt for a young man torn from his family and a mother separated from her son. This is a beautiful and sympathetically written story with a misogynistic boss and his confidence broken assistant. Max keeps getting better and better.
I wanted this to work: alpha billionaire and the male assistant. Unfortunately the author goes the instant love route after one sort of hot hookup. I seriously thought I'd skipped chapters, but no, the lead is in love after a few brief interactions and no indication that his feelings are reciprocal. The point of views are also sloppy, seems like the author needs to do more research before writing m/m. Sexuality aside, not worth finishing I stopped at 50%.
Would have been a big improvement over the last Max Hudson I read, but for one HUGELY PROBLEMATIC issue that shows either a total lack of research into, and ignorance of a very sensitive subject for much of the LGBT community, OR a willful ignorance that is even more damaging. Conversion therapy, and conversion therapy camps, are TRULY AWFUL, mentally damaging and scarring, traumatic experiences, and survivors of them often have self esteem and identity issues for the rest of their life. Suicide rates are also distressingly high amonst those who have attended. So, when Lucas has found out Troy's story, including the fact that he is a survivor of such a conversion therapy camp type experience, it boggles my mind that the author would write the following segment, as a part of Lucas trying to figure out Troy's character... I was royally pissed.
"He could imagine the type of camp to which Troy had been sent to be "made straight again," and they weren't that bad. Yet, being sent there with the pressure of losing your family and your home, Luas couldn't fathom the pressure or fear that would accompany such a situation."
Um.... not that bad? As a queer person, I have been blessed with a family that loves and supports me, BUT I have numerous friends who are survivors, and numerous other friends who know people who are. I even have some friends who knew someone who took their own life as a direct result of their experiences with conversion therapy. Electroshock therapy, sleep deprivation, ice baths, verbal and mental abuse, literal brainwashing, all in an intentional attempt to break down a person into nothing in order to be re-formed into a straight, god fearing child? That is NOT "not that bad."
The rest of the book was better than the last from this author; better (and more subdued) prose, better flow for the story. It is still mind blowing how two characters who barely know each other have sex twice and are madly in love, but that's nothing compared to my issue with the above passage.
Rather than deciding between rounding to 2 or 3 stars, this gets knocked down to 0.5 out of 5, forced to round up due to Goodreads rating system.
AUTHORS, DO YOUR RESEARCH! If you are going to tell a queer story, get the facts about the queer community and its experiences and challenges right!
I really liked this book. There were many places of angst for our MCs, Troy Waters and Lucas McGarber, but there was some humor to balance it.
Troy Waters was the son of a billionaire in corporate America. But his father disowned him when he found out his son was gay at a young age and sent him to terrible camps to make him straight. Troy’s mother tried to stop her husband to no avail.
Troy’s past is what put the fire in him to make it on his own and in the world of corporation and landed a job as an assistant to the CEO of one such place. Lucas McGarber, a man that has a revolving door of gorgeous female assistances because he slept with them and then ignored them, but HR turned the tables on Lucas by hiring a gorgeous male assistant.
Lucas’s once easy life turned upside down when he met and was attracted to Troy. Lucas, who thought he was straight, was overcome with feelings he never felt before for a man and was drawn to Troy. Of course, office gossip from a sassy female co-worker, Amanda, filled Troy in about his new boss.
After two weeks on the job, Troy’s boss tricks him into coming in on the weekend to catch up on his work. Not something he looked forward to. But it was the funniest part of the book when Troy search for a key to his boss’s second drawer of his desk. What he found surprised him, his boss had posed nude for a calendar with other men. Troy was so turned-on he stupidly started to jack himself off to the picture of Lucas, saying his name. When in the middle of his pleasure, he found Lucas in the doorway watching him.
Embarrassed, Troy apologies to Lucas and runs out of the office building knowing he would be fired from his job. Of course, Lucas called Troy into his office. Troy closes the door behind him while Lucas shut the shades. Instead of being fired Lucas had a different punishment for Troy. Troy had to stand near the partial open shade to watch his fellow co-workers come into the office while Lucas seduced his assistant and then f_ _ ked him right there. What a great scene and well written.
After that wonderful secret punishment, Lucas started to treat Troy with indifference and drove Troy crazy until he confronted Lucas after work one day. Another great sex scene in the office, but once again when Lucas was finished he dressed and left making Troy feel used, but it didn’t stop the feelings of wanting his boss and had fallen hard for the man.
These two men fought their feelings for each other and they ended up having to make the decision, stay together or leave each other alone. It took Troy quitting his job to really get Lucas’s attention and the two worked from there how they could have a relationship working together. People in the office would feel any of Troy’s deserved credit would be looked at why that was-he was sleeping with the boss.
But as the story starts to come to a close we learn more about Troy’s mother and the solution Lucas came up with for Troy to keep a job with the corporation and still have a relationship and have their HEA. As I said in the beginning, I really enjoyed reading this book and I believe others would too.
**I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review. ***
This was a cute and enjoyable story about Troy and Lucas. Troy just got a good paying job at Lucas's company. Troy is a shy, gay and a nervous person and has taken this job to prove something to his parents. Lucas is a playboy with one night stands galore with beautiful women, who he dumps after the sex, even the staff workers. Sparks fly as the two meet and try to work together. Sex changes Lucas's point of view who his sexuality and runs the other way. Troy is heartbroken and gives his notice. Now Lucas has the fight of his life on his hands to win Troy back. Will this be a happening thing. You'll need to read this book to find out and it will be worth your while. As a short story, this book has everything that is needed to fill in your time, waiting for that appointment to happen. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC story.
I enjoyed it I loved how Lucas learn to deal with being gay and how what he did to Troy was wrong and giving him the chance to shine in different way yeah what happen was wrong but it see it from two different sides it what makes a relationship last longer Troy had a tough past so making up with his mother is a start who can't change someone because they're gay that doesn't work like that but I'm happy Troy found love
I like Troy. He is a likable character. He is down on his luck. The only job that he can get is as an assistant to hot boss Lucas. Lucas loves the ladies not men. It makes for an interesting situation because Troy is really attracted to him. I loved the writing and the dialogue. The sex was interesting. I liked this story a lot because the characters were fun. I received this as a free ARC.
This book was awkward with underdeveloped characters. The point of view is also strange and hard to follow. Sometimes flipping between character's internal voice between paragraphs. Not my favorite
