What happened to Fenris after he fled Solantha? Find out in this epic new trilogy following the events of Scorched by Magic from the Baine Chronicles…

Fenris is no stranger to picking up the pieces of his life and starting over. Three years ago, he was forced to flee his life as Chief Mage of Nebara, and undergo a magical procedure that changed him into a shifter and forever altered the course of his future.

But even though adjusting to life as a shifter was hard, Fenris had friends in Solantha. This time, to save his friends from being caught up in his own troubles, he's fled to Abbsville, a small human town with less than one-thousand people. And not a single ally to rely on.

Or so he thinks.

Not long after he arrives in town, Fenris finds himself entangled with Mina—a beautiful veterinarian with a heart of gold, and secrets lurking behind her gentle smile. Fenris knows he should stay away, but he has never been able to turn away when an innocent is in trouble. And it doesn't take him very long to realize that Mina is in a whole world of it.

If Fenris and Mina want to keep their secrets intact, they are going to have to learn to trust each other. But trust is a hard thing to give, especially when you’ve spent your entire life running…

Don't miss the first book in this epic tale. Scroll up and grab your copy today!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a spinoff series following the events of SCORCHED BY MAGIC, Book 7 in the Baine Chronicles series. While you are not required to have read the previous series to enjoy this one, it is highly recommended that you do. Unlike the Baine Chronicles, which is written from Sunaya's POV, this spinoff is written in dual first person POV-- in other words, from the viewpoints of both Fenris and Mina. Sunaya's series contains foul language, violence, and some adult situations, whereas Fenris's story has tamer language but much more romance.

This one was more romance than the urban fantasy series it was spun from, The Baine Chronicles, athough it's still a fairly slow burn romance. Not a lot happened in the book in terms of adventure or danger and it ultimately ended up feeling like an introduction and set-up book for the series that will follow.

I enjoyed seeing this side of Fenris as it begins to round him out more as a character in his own right. I also liked the Mina character and look forward to seeing how see matures through the series.

Walt is a good writer with a creative mind, and her Baine Chronicles world is easy to slide into. My only worry is that the relationship aspects will over shadow the plots. For me this is not a bonus, although I know romance readers will be pleased.

I'm so happy we get to follow Fenris! This book is more tame in terms of action/adventure, but there is a lot of character development and a sweet, budding romance between Fenris and Mina.

Fenris was Sunaya's first friend in the palace, but his deadly secret could cause trouble for the first mage. Fenris chooses to leave in the chaos that follows the earthquake without informing them that he is alive. They wouldn't let him go otherwise. Now he's starting life in a small village away from everything he loves, only to discover there someone special sitting right here under his nose. Mina is a mage but is living as a human. Her secrets are about to be exposed and when Fenris offers her help to deal with her tiresome and abusive family, she is more than relieved. She's halfway in love with him.

Fugitive by Magic ARC Review
This first book of Fenris's story continues the tale of Fenris, a wolf shifter, begun in The Baine Chronicles and climaxing in Book Seven, Scorched by Magic. Fenris is the good friend of Chief Mage Iannis ar'Sannin and Sunaya Baine of Solantha, whose story is first revealed in the Fenris prequel, Forsaken by Magic. Fenris is an incredibly complex and compelling character, in whose struggle we can see ourselves. The integration of Fenris's shifter and mage selves provides the reader with insight into two seemingly incompatible natures, the unemotional and logical Mage, and the emotional and volatile Shifter. This struggle is highlighted for the reader in the scene with Fenris and Mina at a party when Fenris uses a sleeping spell to save Mina from the unwelcome attentions of Roor. It is this decision that drives much of the action that reveals Mina's secret and threatens Fenris's secret as well.

Mina, a veterinarian and Mage, is in hiding from her family until she reaches her majority. Mina has been forced to move frequently to save herself from continued abuse. Mina does not like having to uproot her life, but sees no other way to escape her situation. She is wonderful with animals and surreptitiously uses her magic to calm and heal. Not having received formal training, Mina is limited with what she can do with spells to help animals. She is delighted to have found Fenris, who can help her learn magic. Mina is also delighted that she is incredibly attracted to Fenris, and he to her. The tension between the two characters, both in magic and attraction, sets the stage for the book, and subsequent books of the trilogy.

One of the secondary characters, Marris, is introduced in the beginning scene of the book. Marris is a young and happy-go-lucky man, who typically acts before thinking. It is this outlook that could land him, his friends, and ultimately Fenris, in hot water with the Mages Guild for counterfeiting. Counterfeiting is one of the main storylines throughout The Baine Chronicles, as it is the scheme used by the Benefactor to finance the Resistance. The scheme was discovered by Sunaya and Fenris, and Fenris's quick thinking and action saves both Marris and the villagers.

Mina's foray into Mage society provides the reader a glimpse into the fantastical world of the mages. Fenris's assistance to Mina causes laughter as Fenris takes the "boy toy" mage role to Mina's older (cougar) woman! Again, Fenris's quick thinking and Mina's responses are as light-hearted as they are serious, and potentially dangerous for Fenris. That Fenris is willing to risk his life to help Mina speaks volumes about their burgeoning relationship.

This first book of the Fenris trilogy by Jasmine Walt leaves the reader anxiously awaiting Books Two and Three. As a longtime fan of Jasmine's books and The Baine Chronicles in particular, I highly recommend Book One of Fenris's trilogy. This series is sure to become your favorite as much as it has mine!

"Fugitive by Magic" is the first chapter in Fenris's story and is a great base for an exciting new series 🤗.

This book (an ARC in my case) actually reminds me of an incubator of sorts 👩🏼‍🔬: the controlled environment where the characters mature and develop before being let out into the outside world. I can't wait 👏🏻!

You definitely need to have read "The Baine Chronicles" though to become fully immersed in the story, because that's where Recca was built 🌎. And "Forsaken by Magic" is a must, since that sets the stage for Fenris's personal struggles and explains many of his doubts.

This novel is slightly slower paced than the other books by Jasmine and it ought to be, because the main characters call for it. For example, the love conflict springs from their personal journeys and feelings, rather than plot twists ❤️. Although our heroes do face several trials caused by other people's stupidity 🤦🏼‍♀️. As a result, there isn't quite as much physical action as we are used to. It is a breathtaking and exciting read nonetheless 🎭.

I love that the book was written equally from both Fenris's and Mina's points of view, since they drive the story and set the pace. Every change in their relationship is organic and originates in who they are. So I feel like I am finally figuring out Fenris 🐺 and getting to know Mina quite well 👩‍⚕️.

Mina's journey is akin to coming out of hibernation 🌅. Her evolution throughout the book was so inspiring 😊. Mina has been through a lot but didn't let it break her. She is lovely, compassionate and charming with quiet strength and "a spine of steel" 💪🏻. I loved watching her come into her skin and grow stronger. And she certainly surprised me a couple of times 😳.

I am a crazy fan of Jasmine and had been looking forward to Fenris's story for years, it seems (oh, wait, it has been years 💁🏼). It was so cathartic to finally discover the inside workings of his mind 🤓. What can I say? Intelligence is sexy and chivalry isn't dead 😍.

Both Fenris and Mina struggle with their pasts and secrets. I was biting my nails so hard, watching them find their way to each other. They are just so perfect together 💏! I am definitely very invested in their future and can't wait for the next installment 🙏🏻!!!

Fenris, Fenris, Fenris...where to start?
Warning: will contain some spoilers...

First, I’m extremely happy Fenris is getting his own spin off- looking forward to his story unfolding. This book is the stepping stone for that.

What I liked:
~ The town Fenris chose to settle in.
~ His plans in the town/his actions of helping people despite the risk.
~ The new characters are great one and have promising story lines for future books.
~ Career choice for Mina and her background story (can't wait to see how it unfolds)

What I didn’t care for:
~ Some parts were slow moving. I was able to walk away from the book which is not typical for her books with me (I usually can’t put them down and finish in one day). This one took me several days and I attribute this to it being the base book of the story (it wasn’t a bad book by any means and I will be reading her future ones).
~ This one contained more romance than I care for in a book- it was Mina and Fenris falling in love and you get both sides of this versus one. The book alternates between Fenris and Mina’s thoughts (labeled so you are aware).

If you’re just getting into Jasmine’s books, you’ll have no problem starting with this one. However, I would highly recommend reading The Baine Chronicles first. That will give you in depth details about how this book came about and the whole world will flow together for you better. This book briefly describes some of what happened- enough for you to get by.

I can’t say this enough about Jasmine’s books: she doesn’t leave cliffhanger’s, but leaves it open for the next book in the series (which is awesome imo).

Should you buy this book? Absolutely. I plan on reading the next in this promising series.

Note: I was given an advanced reader copy, but I ALSO pre-ordered the book.

Although we follow the story of one of the most important characters of the Baine chronicles, Fenris's story has completely different atmosphere than Sunaya's books.
After he ran away from Solantha to find refuge in a small human village far from the center of events, Fernis became a bit of sensation. A shifter in purely human town simply makes the villagers curious, and some of them even angry. But when Fenris meets Mina and helps her out of trouble with a little magic of his own, he has no idea about the string of events it would cause, and the unwanted attention now turned in Mina's direction. She certainly has some secrets on her own, and she is not the only one. With the forged golden coins aimed at helping the poor farmers but calling for trouble, Fenris must think quickly of a safe solution to make things right.
Whereas Sunaya's story is stormy, wild and adventurous openly from the first page to the last, Fenris's story feels different. Calm, peaceful and enjoyable, but with the subtle hints of danger and tension bubbling right below the surface, threatening to explode any time. The building suspense even made me jumpy for a while, waiting for the breakpoint, and when it came, I rushed to the end in no time. Emotional, romantic, and yet adventurous story with awesome characters and fluent plot development that could be read as a standalone, though I certainly advise to read Sunaya's story first to understand all the details and connections. And I very much liked Mina's character, her powers and strong will, with now crumbling control and desperate need to help and protect.
I read an ARC of the book and provide my honest feedback on my own.

I was lucky enough as a massive fan of this series to win an advance copy of this great spin off from The Baine Chronicles. Preferably you'd read them first because they're some great fantasy stories too and this'll make more sense with all the different species interactions.

We get to follow Fenris into his retreat from city life in Solantha to a village. Set from shortly after he left Iannis and Sunaya after being extra worried he was going to be outed as his former self when he'd been trying to hide and be assumed dead by a visiting politician.

He learns how to be a landowner and horseowner whilst trying to act normal and a mild romance springs up between him and the local vet who isn't quite what she seems on the surface but that's the fun part about this book! All sorts of family plots going on weaving a web that no doubt we will get to see him unravel in later books.

It has definitely been nice getting to know the inner Fenris and his shifter rather than the former mage Fenris from the Baine Chronicles main series.

As always looking forward to more from this series. <3

I am a huge fan of the Baine Chronicles and was excited to find out there was going to be a companion series from Fenris’ point of view. To let readers know upfront, you probably should read the other books in the series first before starting this one. But, believe me, this is no hardship as it’s a great series. Back to this book, Fenris has been one of my favorite characters, and I am so very excited to learn more about him. Ms. Walt’s amazing writing skills and great plots were both in full-force in this novel, making the characters seem so real, it felt like I had known them for years. I really liked the way she skillfully weaved both Mina’s and Fenris’ viewpoints together so we knew exactly how they felt and what was happening. I was worried I wouldn’t like Fenris’ love interest as I couldn’t imagine anyone who would be a perfect foil for him. I needn’t have worried because Mina is perfect. This slow build-up of revealing themselves to each other really suited the characters, and I still couldn’t put the book down even though there wasn’t the same type of action as in the other books. Ms. Walt has hit it out of the ballpark, and I can’t wait to see more of these characters in the next book. Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

(ARC) I loved the dynamics of the book. Even Roor added a flair to the book. Mina and Fenris make a good team. I love the passion with which both characters portrayed themselves. They are both independent but also not willing to go on being alone for another minute. I loved how Fenris kept saving the day eventhough he was in that town to hide it didn't stop him from being his usual Gallant self and saving the town, Mina, and his new friends.

The most exciting part is the last few chapters where Fenris finally gives in to his feelings and the tells Mina he will help her with the daunting task of turning herself over to her family and proving that she is in fact the heir to the fortune and is who she is. The next book is bound to be just as exciting as this one.

I love Jasmine Walt and her books. She always knows how to bring the suspense, as well as the passion, excitement, and the love. Anything she writes is well worth reading.

Another masterpiece!

I loved this book! Fenris has been one of my favorite characters in the Baine Chronicles and continuing his story has been awesome for me! Oh and I can't say enough good things about Mina! She is perfect for Fenris. They make quite the team. This book seemed to be an emotional rollercoaster for me as I felt all of the emotions that Fenris had missing Sunaya and Iannis and all the pent up fear and nervous tension of Mina as she tried to live her life under the radar of those around her. The ending has me ready for book two, which I'm sure will be out before I know it! Thank you for a great new series with my favorite character, Jasmine! I sure wish I could have had Fenris around through my boyfriend from hell years. The crack of ribs would have been pure symphony! Read this book and you will understand 😂

Having been lured into the world of magic with the Baine Chronicles, I was so excited to see this new realm unfold with the story of Fenris. I'm pleased to say that I loved this book.

The story has a great pace, totally brings the small town feel to life with its easy going speed of life. We get to see where Fenris is landing, and how his plans unfold now that he's moved on with his new life. The supporting cast of characters are fun,and perfect for this story bringing humor, action, magic, and love to his world.

If you like the Baine Chronicles, you will like this new series too. Be sure to check out the novella, Forsaken by Magic, that gives you even more backstory on Fenris and how he became Fenris.

4.9 for me. I loved Sunaya's story and fell for Fenris, so when his story was then told, I was so excited.

Fenris and Mina are cool. I liked how they were both in hiding and wanted to lie low, but couldn't, because of feels. It was definitely a much slower pace than the love enforcer that this series spins off from, but I thought it perfectly fit Fenris' chill personality. The tone was different but fit just as well, and Mina- to quote Fenris -was like a star of soft light. You meet her in this book and get a little more personal with Fenris' past, but I loved how sweet she was. It was an overall fun small town read with the suspense of keeping hidden and taking a chance on something more, even if it leads through danger.

A little bored

I was excited to see Fenris' story. I of course was also happy to see it was available in Kindle Unlimited. It was a quick, short read but really missing the spark I got from the other series. Reading the Baine series is not a 100% must but highly recommended before involving yourself in Fenris's world.
I found myself skimming a lot of this book. Too much introspection that was repeated. The side characters were also not very interesting and in return I didn't care to hear about them; especially if it was as mundane as listening about them at book club. Hopefully the next book will have a little more action. I was happy to see him getting a bit more in touch with his shifter side.

Worth the wait to read!!!

I had this book for a long time and hoping that it will become an audiobook!😢 I have the first 7 books on kindle and audible! But with my time being limited to read I was hoping it will be on audible by now!

Luck will have it that I had some time this week to read and glad I chose this book! It was had to put down!

I love this series and Fenris really shines in this book! I love the insight of Fenris and Mina relationships and their past! I like seeing this side of him and his reaction to the townspeople! Trying to fits in, denying his feelings for Minna, dealing with racist neighbours! I enjoy this book and looking forward to read the next one!

Sorry no big spoilers here to read! It’s short enough that I won’t do that!

I again had the opportunity to read an ARC and I'm glad I was chosen! I've always wanted to know more of Fenris's colorful past. Now with his novella and digging into this new series, we as readers get more from Fenris. I absolutely love the new characters Mina and Barrla. Mina is feminine yet smart and strong willed. Such a beautiful character. Barrla makes me laugh so much! Such a fiery temper in that one! I did enjoy the book, but I did feel there was less action than some of Jasmine's other works, but this story laid a really good foundation for the series to follow and I'm excited to see where this journey takes us!

Where to begin. The long anticipated story of Fenris.... let's just say Jasmine does not disappoint in this spinoff series in the Baine Chronicles. (If you have not read them... you must!)

After finding he survived.... He is finally living!! We get to see a new side of Fenris and meet new characters that fit right in. The story is so well written and does not miss a beat! While our favorites Sunaya and Iannis are not in the book... it is exciting to see a new adventure unfold.

A must read if you are continuing you Baine Chronicles adventure and a must read if you love shifters, mages, adventure, suspense and romance.

Absolutely brilliant!

Wow Jasmine walt is such a talented lady! I have literally devoured all her books, the Baine chronicles being amongst my favourites.

It was brilliant to read what happened to fenris after he faked his death and left solantha, leaving all that he loved and held dear to his heart.
The sadness he felt has been portrayed brilliantly, through out this book.
It made me so happy when he found happiness and realised he didn't have to be a loner anymore.

This is a beautifully written book, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Can't wait to read what happens next!!

Not particularly my favorite books out of the entire series, unfortunately. It was riddled with awkward and unclear moments. Also, is it just me, or is Mina too much of a goody-two-shoes type of girl? How perfect can she be really? Fenris was a doll as always but even there were moments were he felt flat or completely out of character (really, magic shows?). Ah, they're just so perfect it's lackluster.

The action and plot was a little subpar from Walt's usual fare. At times the villains weren't convincing enough in the evil ways. It was like trying to force bad ways onto on John Doe - eh, it was average.

Anyhow, I'm still way too invested in this series to stop and thus am undeterred!

Definitly digging this new adventure with Fenris and the turn his life has taken!! Definitely less action and more romance in this story so far but I think the second Fenris story will have some more action as he and Mina head off to prove she is alive.

PS- I am also really hoping there is already or will be a story line of Sunaya's human friend Annia and her trave and especially the magical goddess(?) Gara-something she has encountered and who has made her a magic user.....I am positive that if it does not exist then it will.

Always great stories

I just love this author. She is just an amazing writer and I'm never let down when I read one of her books. This story is just as great as all her other books. Lots of adventure, tough moments, romance, drama. Has everything and I love the characters. I like that there are two lead roles in this series. Its a great branch off of the Baine Chronicles. Definite great read.

Wonderful story!

It was great being able to read more about fenris! I hate that he is no longer with sunaya and innias as they all made a great team but was very excited that he has finally found someone he cares about! Can't wait to read his second story! I highly reccomend this book! But if u haven't read the baine chronicles in my opinion I would definitely read them first as it is also a great series!

Fenris had fled 3 years ago from being the Chief Mage and had been magically changed to be a shifter. While trying to adjust to his new life he ends up in a small human town called Abbsville. However he soon gets involved with Mina the local veterinarian who is also in trouble. Can they both learn to trust each other?

Great story, well written and very clear and easy to understand. I definitely found myself lost in the story. I just need to know what happens next now.

I think I like this spin off trilogy more than the original story. It may be mostly because the world has been fleshed out and there is just the story to enjoy. It still has some of the things I dislike about the main series in it though. Mostly continuity errors and editing goofs, but I like the story enough to ignore those bits.
It was nice to see what he was up to when he left. It’s cute and I liked it.

Loved reading about Fenris!!

Fenris is on the run and hiding from a death sentence. He lands in a small community and tries to fit in but being a handsome and apparently wealthy new neighbor makes that almost impossible. You'll love how he tries to fix things only to have something else go wrong. Enjoy this new chapter in the Baine Chronicles!!

Magnetic is what this author's books are like! FENRIS the mage/shifter is hiding out and just trying to fit in with normal people until he meets MINA. She is also a mage and trying to live like a regular person but challenges in life bring them together with a bang! Magic and love conquers all. Love this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration.

Finally!!

I loved Fenris when he was introduced in Sunaya's story. I absolutely love that he has his own story now. This book was great. Everything about Fenris is so wrapped up with his compassion for others with little regard for what it will do to him. I think the chemistry between him and Mina is so amazing. Here's to a great relationship for both.

Loved Fenris first book

I just picked up my Sunaya book from a year or so hiatus in the nick of time to stop & read Fenris before I got to her 8th book the wedding. I’m glad Fenris gets to let his hair down a bit and now I’m invested with what happens to Mina! Fun times ahead, I can feel it!

Great read!

Exciting and intriguing book, Walt went steamy much quicker. All this aside, the new main couple are very entertaining and their story grabs the reader's interest and keeps it captivated. It is an excellent addition to the Baine series in which I am also addicted . A character as well loved as the male lead needed his own series. Thank you, Walt! Enjoy!

Good spinoff series

I was so upset with Fenris when Sunaya realized what her done in the original Baine chronicles. But I realize now Fenris felt like he had no other choice. He's picked a weird place to settle though. He does meet an exceptional young mage, Mina. The adventure starts with the two of them and it's entertaining.
