Margot Fonteyn is The Royal Ballet’s legendary prima ballerina assoluta and the company’s first “homegrown” ballerina. Frederick Ashton’s first muse, her lyrical style and innate grace were illuminated in the many ballets he created for her.
THS IS A REVIEW OF ‘MARGOT FONTEYN’ (Dancers of Today, no. 1) by Hugh Fisher, published by A & C Black, 1952. No database listing, so I have to borrow from a similar photographic series. This was a popular series in its day, when ballet photography was as much an art form in itself. Compared to the Gordon Anthony volume, this is rather disappointing and far too brief. Still worth a visit though, if only to admire Fonteyn’s consummate artistry.
