The author narrates his childhood in communist Romania from 1956 when he was 7 years old until 1968 when he leaves for Rome with a grant as a student in history of art.
Victor I. Stoichiță is a Professor of the History of Art at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He is the author of "A Short History of the Shadow" (Reaktion, 1997) and co-author of "Goya" (Reaktion, 1999)
Da, probabil nu merita, in contextul marii literaturi, cinci stele. E obligatoriu. 4,6/5
well written memoir but very self congratulatory and exuding a sense of entitlement that was very annoying on many occasions; yes the communists took the author's family land, palaces and many properties but he still resided in the best Bucharest neighborhood not in a shoddy built apartment block in the middle of garbage and mud, he still went to the best schools and had access to the elite, the more time went, so as someone living through more or less the same period in quite different conditions, I almost threw this book away a few times (metaphorically as I have an ebook) for the arrogance and sense of entitlement there - noting the author was born in 1949 so he was spared the worst excesses of the regime from 1947-1958-9
try read Ioana Parvulescu's "si eu am trait sub communism" (I lived under communism too) instead which is a collection of (many) vignettes that show the real life of real people under communism (from the glass with water on the night-shelf that is frozen in the morning, to the college graduate sent to work in the middle of nowhere not at Rome with a stipend and so on...)
very annoying book, but well written stylistically
The author narrates his childhood in post world war II communist Romania from the age 7 until he leaves for Rome as a history of art student. A very interesting and moving testimonial of how people lived and coped with the system. The book was written in French and just got published in 2014. I hope that it gets translated in English soon.
Mi-a părut rău că s-a terminat.
Sympa :)
