Pierce Brown’s Red Rising continues with Sons of Ares! Fitchner’s quest to rescue Bryn and Sevro comes close to its dramatic ending, as he is forced to go up against the one person he used to consider a friend in the ultimate game of life and death.
Hello. I'm Pierce Brown, the author of the Red Rising Saga, a NYT #1 bestseller. I figured I'd write you myself than have corporate copy pasted below my totally natural author photo.
In my books you'll find stories of men and women finding their inner strength when all seems lost. You'll also find me exploring themes of love, violence, hope, and power--what it means, why people seek it, and how they hold onto it.
Once upon a time we read about a Red who sang of freedom. Her name, Eo, was lost and people came to know her as Persephone. Then we met a Gold who fell in love with a Red (Darrow); she went by Mustang. We also met another Gold who fell in love with a hybrid (Sevro). She was called Victra. All badass women. In this issue, we really meet another strong Red- Bryn. We get a glimpse at the spark which Fitchner fell for. And believe it or not, my Goodman, it is this Bryn who is responsible for starting the revolution (and the resistance) way before Eo ever sang her song and indirectly gave Darrow the inspiration to break the chains. This was a great issue, coming a full circle as the flashbacks blended into the present. Looking forward to Issue #6.
It's been years since I bought an actual comic but I'm a huge fan of Pierce Brown's Red Rising books so of course I preordered this prequel comic series the moment it was available (I even ordered the two different covers for each issue because I'm a geek and I just had to have them!). Let me start by saying that you really need to read all 6 instalments to get the full story, each issue is around 30 pages so when you combine them all together you're probably looking at roughly a graphic novel sized story (around the same length as a volume of Saga) overall but split into 6 sections.
I bought the comics as they were released because I wanted print copies and it hadn't been announced if there would be a bind up edition but I'm happy to say that there are now 2 different versions available to preorder, a normal hardback and a slightly more expensive signed edition. I think the comics are out of print now unless you want to purchase a digital edition so this is brilliant news for anyone who missed buying them sooner.
Now you've got more of an idea what you're actually getting let's get to the interesting stuff like the artwork and the story. This is a prequel so it's set before Red Rising but I definitely wouldn't recommend starting here - you'll end up giving yourself spoilers for the main books if you do. I do think fans of the series will love getting to see Fitchner's early years, how he met his wife and baby Sevro. It's very easy to see where Sevro gets his attitude from that's for sure!
The artwork is wonderful, quite dark in colour but that fits the gory and violent tone of the story perfectly. I love the added touch that each conversation bubble is coloured to match the birth colour of the character speaking. I really enjoying being back in this world but via a more visual format and it left me wanting to reread the rest of the series again. This is one of my all time favourite series so I'll jump at any chance for more from this world and this was a lovely addition.
Content-wise, this is some of the best freaking dialogue we've had. We're in the realm of "Mad's Emotions Are On Such A Rollercoaster She Has Lost The Ability To Can" -- that is just how good this dialogue is. What I love is that it's not just inner monologue from Fitchner, because Bryn and other characters get some of the best lines...but most especially Bryn.
DAMN, GURL. First off, this woman is a bloodydamn Red queen and I am not prepared for my heart to be shredded by how I basically figure this will go. Augh. My heart. Not prepared.
¡¡¡OMG!!!
Ugh. I want more! As always, the art isn't my style, but the story gets better, more compelling, with each issue. I almost screamed with frustration when I reached the end because I need the rest of the story!
Here we are, at the penultimate issue of Sons of Ares. If you've read the trilogy, you know what the inevitable outcome will be, yet that doesn't make this story any less exciting or heart wrenching. The action is, as always, a big plus. Go Bryn! And there's even more baby Sevro! :squee: The art isn't as odd in this one, but the time jumps between scenes threw me off at first. Still, I've really enjoyed this story and am not ready for it to end with the next issue.
The flashbacks have almost caught up. Fitchner’s wife is captured by his old friend, who has become one of the brutal bureaucrats that wants to keep the bloodlines pure. Rejected by Fitchner, he wants revenge. . . but bites off more than he can chew. There’s no way I’m expecting a happy ending here, but there really hasn’t been anything that would lead me to believe this is an actual rebellion, or that Fitchner could be any kind of leader. It totally comes off as him doing it for himself, without caring about the masses. 2.5 pushed up to 3/5
I have already stated why I am not a fan of the artwork. I did like how the story unfolded - past and present - through the paneling.
The story is amping up and tying it all together before the last issue. I love this one because of what Bryn said to her sister about her son, and the Goblin nickname. Funny foreshadowing.
I did catch a blooper. On the cover Bryn has her robotic leg, but on the second to last panel, she has two flesh legs. oops.
So yes hi I am screaming right now. I love Pierce Brown's writing and his commentary translates so well to this comic format. The art style in this is absolutely amazing and as each volume comes out, I find myself reading faster and faster and wanting to know more about the story. The ending of this had me wanting to jump up and down and scream I kinda saw it coming but I am freaking out. Everything is coming to a climax and I can't wait to see what the next volume has in store!
This look into what made Fitchner into the gold who would help topple an empire is amazing. Here we get to see what really happened and how he came to hate the society so much. Certainly a must read for Red Riding fans.
Again, it's just hard to compare the power of a full novel with a handful of comic book pages. This is an important story from the Red Rising universe, and on principal I don't mind graphic novels, but it's just not nearly as compelling an experience for me.
Fitchner is infiltrating the quality control facility to rescue his wife and kid. We get to see some of his family life as well as know when Sevro started being called “Goblin” for his unusual looks.
I freaking love Fitchner and that is heartbreaking. :'( Loving the prequel comics, but they're so short!! I have to wait like 5 months and then binge read a bunch of them in a row...
