Nibbles #2

Nibbles: The Dinosaur Guide

Rate this book
NIBBLES, the book-eating MONSTER, has chomped his way into this book of DINOSAURS! Has he bitten off more than he can chew?!

What was a very serious book about very serious dinosaurs is suddenly interrupted by a hole – a nibbled hole – in the book. Who would do something like that?

Little ones will love trying to find the culprit – Nibbles – hiding among their favorite, easily recognizable dinosaurs. Is he an herbivore? A carnivore? Or … a bookivore?

Emma Yarlett’s Nibbles: The Dinosaur Guide is packed with flaps, folds, facts and die cuts, plus one very naughty monster and an ending to make Houdini proud. But has Nibbles bitten off more than he can chew?

Themes include humor and science.

I love Nibbles! It is fun that this second one combined dinosaurs with Nibbles.

We love Nibbles. We have a stuffed Nibbles and have read the first one so many times (and it is one of my husband’s favorite picture books–he says it is so unique.) I am probably majorly biased when it comes to this review because OF COURSE we loved this one also. What is so interesting about this new book is that it takes the concept of Nibbles (a book eating monster) and takes him on a time-traveling adventure to the age of the dinosaurs using his eating/transporting powers. It is funny and educational. Just as the first one combined Nibbles’s antics with fairy tales, this one combined Nibbles with dinosaurs education!

This is one of my 4-year-old's favorite books IN THE WORLD. How could it not be? It mingles fascinating dinosaurs (his obsession) with slapstick humour, and he laughs hysterically every single time we read it. Highly, highly recommended!

Some of you may already be aware of Nibbles. He is a little monster that likes to nibble everything. Nibble nibbles socks, Nibble nibbles clocks, but the thing that Nibble likes to nibble most is books! Therefore, putting him in a book is not the safest place as he will try and eat his way out. Whilst the first book saw the tyke getting into trouble in fairy tales, this time it is non-fiction that has whetted his appetite and in particular a book all about dinosaurs.

Nibbles has escaped once more, but instead of devouring Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks, he is munching his way through the Jurassic era. Although he himself is a monster, Nibbles is only small so when the dinosaurs find out that he is causing trouble they decide to chase him from their book. Can Nibbles escape the Land of the Dinosaurs before being stomped on?

They are few books that broke the 4th wall better than the original ‘Nibbles’. Here was a character that could hop in and out of famous stories by eating his way around. This meant that the layout of the book was a triumph – glorious hardback with mini books contained within. There is hours of fun just to be had peering through the various holes in the book that Nibbles made. More of the same would have been great, but with ‘‘The Dinosaur Guide’’ it is a case of more of the similar, showing that changing something small can make a big difference.

The fact that this is non-fiction, rather than fiction means that the book feels quite different. It made a kind of twisted sense that Nibbles would eat fairy tales and disrupting well known stories means that you know what trouble he is causing as his antics alter the original narrative. By consuming non-fiction, this structure is missing. Instead you have a creature venturing forth through a typical encyclopaedia style fact book. When he gets in the way of a dinosaur they pop out of their frames and chase him. It does work, but the fun of disrupting traditional folk tales is far greater than just a chase book filled with angry dinosaurs.

Despite the subject matter not being as keen as the first title, the structure of the book is still a tour de force. This is a wonderful A4 hardback full of flaps that can he looked under. More often than not you will find a big hole behind it that Nibbles has created. In terms of interaction, the fun is still wonderful. You can also learn a little if you read around the holes as there are some genuine Dino facts on offer.

The issue with this title is that the narrative structure is missing by the decision to use non-fiction. In its stead Emma Yarlett has increased the cheek factor. The first book had a little mild naughtiness, but ‘‘Dinosaur Guide’’ has brought out the crassness. There is more than one reference to dinosaur poo in this book. The original did not need to resort to this humour. I cannot help feeling that one or two more children’s story based outings would have been nice before tackling dinosaurs. What you have is a very well put together book that lacks the satisfaction of the first. Many children will still enjoy this outing, but it is just not up to muster. Nibbles is back! Dinosaurs, jokes, a giant fart, and tons of naughty nibbling!

I just adored the first Nibbles book and was hoping that there would be more Nibbles. There are still so many more books for Nibbles to nibble on. Imagine my delight when I saw there would be a new Nibble book featuring one of my all time favourite subjects: Dinosaurs!

This time Nibbles is eating a dinosaur guide, so follow the hunt to find Nibbles as he eats his way through dinosaurs (noooo, dad!). You can imagine the dinosaurs aren't amused by this little critter that is nibbling his way through their lives, friends, family, and trees.

I loved the little footprints that were scattered throughout the pages, plus I had so much fun finding Nibbles. Then there are flaps you can open up for even more adventures and fun hidden secrets.

And be prepared to laugh your butt off, there are lots of funny jokes (and even some terrible ones :P), and also there are nibble holes in the previous page highlight a dinosaur and something he says (quite often hilarious).

I just adored how the last page and the blurb of the book connect together (plus those poor dinosaurs). I did notice the hole of course, but had no idea that it connected the flying Nibbles to those pages.

The art is still fabulous. Nibbles is an adorable monster (though very naughty). Plus I love how the dinosaurs were drawn.

Giving this one the rating that my kids would say, since this has been a favorite of my boys for years. The cutouts are cleverly done, and this book is responsible for the first word that they have learned to read. (Of course it’s “poop”.)

Oh-no! Nibbles has nibbled his way into another book and this time it is fraught with danger. Nibbles has only gone and landed himself in the land of the dinosaurs. A land full of creatures that are all rather too keen to take a big bite out of Nibbles.

Nibbles: The Dinosaur Guide combines Nibbles’ adventure story along with non-fiction facts about dinosaurs. Emma Yarlett has cleverly and gently eased young readers into the world of non-fiction and has made it incredibly good fun.

Join Nibbles on a hilarious and fact-filled adventure as he nibbles his way through the land of the dinosaurs. Nibbles will come face to face with the big-bummed Triceratops, a Diplodocus who could fill a swimming pool, the small and highly intelligent Velociraptor, and the Tyrannosaurus rex whose name translates to Tyrant Lizard King. Will he make it out alive…

Nibbles: The Dinosaur Guide is full of fabulous facts, jokes and dinosaur themed puns. For each dinosaur there is a phonetic pronunciation, annotated illustrations, key facts and lift the flaps. Nibbles has quite literally nibbled his way through the book and readers will enjoy spotting the holes he has made as he munches his way from one page to the next.

It is hilarious, educational, and most of all, good fun and enjoyable to read.

"Forats, estripades i pàgines rosegades.

I bought S this book as a Christmas book after he became interested in it while stopping by a friend's Usborne books stand. We have never read the original Nibbles book, but I don't think it really matters. This book seems to stand alone just fine. The layout of the book is very clever as Nibbles nibbles his way through the pages and gets into all sorts of trouble with the dinosaurs. It does have a bit more potty humor than I tend to enjoy (lots of jokes about farts and poop), but of course 6-year-old S thought that was fantastic, and he's the target audience, after all. He likes this book a lot, and enjoyed having various relatives read it to him over the holidays.

This book has it all. Pictures, humor, story, facts and great use of paper.

It's a dinosaur guide with illustrations and text where a book monster bites through pages leaving holes and confusion behind. The dinosaurs try to catch it and you will be turning page after page to see where it has gone.

It's funny and exciting to follow the book monster literally through the pages and multiple rereads are guaranteed.

The book is very well made and I suggest you buy it today :)

NIBBLES: THE DINOSAUR GUIDE is an engaging read that will have everyone in the family chuckling as you learn about a few dinosaur species.

Nibbles is a bookivore monster who has nibbled his way through several books but finds this dinosaur guide especially delicious. My kids laughed out loud at every page (so did my husband) and we all left knowing more about dinosaur poop than I think any of us thought possible. 🤣

This is a great pick for all the dinosaur enthusiasts 2-8 years old

I love Nibbles the Book Monster and this sequel (of sorts) is just as amazing. I laughed so much at the humor within the pages and enjoyed all of the dinosaur illustrations, actions, and facts. This book is just as much for adults as it is for children and I'd recommend it for 4th grade on up for understanding wise and for more of the humor to be appreciated. LOVED this book!

It’s a cute concept but this book was neither here nor there for me. If your kid is into dinosaurs, then a book on dino facts without the distraction of Nibbles chomping through the book would be better. If it’s the chomping bit you enjoy, then Nicola O’Byrne’s Open Very Carefully has a more interesting plot.

Listening to my daughter (4) laugh hysterically as she "reads" this book to herself makes me so happy. This book is also makes a great read aloud. Preschoolers love to exclaim "oh, nibbles" as they fall over laughing.

Super clever paper design, with dual purpose flaps that fit perfectly with the page to change expressions/etc. The jokes are -on point- for the target audience, which is to say; there's a lot of farts.
