(sorry, I don't have a scanner for the cover) I have mixed feelings about this book. The author has very carefully chosen all the passages in which food is mentioned in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. One on hand, I was delighted with the recipes: there's even recipes for preparing a brace of coneys and for Elvish Draft and Beorn's Twice Baked Honey Cakes. All appear doable for the average cook. On the other hand, the book seemed over-priced and the layout could have been better. Where a list of food is noted as in the passage in which the dwarves are making demands on Bilbo, the same quote is repeated needlessly for each and every recipe instead of listing all the recipes under one quote. There was too much blank space that could have been filled with small illustrations, or at the very least, condense the book to half its size. The pages are unnumbered and an index in the back would have been appreciated. The author includes some of her own drawings - the ones on the back of the dustjacket should have included a note of explanation. IMO, the book could have done with a more able artist. That said, I'm still glad to have it for my Tolkien collection and I'm looking forward to trying out some of the recipes.
Such a cool, and unique short read by a talented indie author. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect going in, but I'm glad I picked this one up. An instant hit for fans of The Lord of The Rings books, you not only get to be entertained, but also get some new recipes to try. With the variety, you're sure to find many that you like.
