Connecticut Kings #3

Determining Possession

Rate this book
Good decisions don’t always leave you unscathed.

Sometimes, the best choice might be the one that leaves you vulnerable. The one that forces you to face a not-so-distant past that hurts, or go through with something you never thought would come to fruition. The one that makes taking a risk your only viable option.

Wilhelmina “Wil” Cunningham is no stranger to pressure. The child of an Olympian and a title-winning boxer, and a former Olympian herself, Wil has gained an “America’s sweetheart” sort of reputation - a high pedestal to fall from when her world gets rocked by betrayal and deceit, from more than one direction.

Not that long ago, Ramsey Bishop dominated the field, as one of the best running backs the league had ever seen. Personal tragedy drew him away, but he made a promise he can’t take back, and no one will let him forget. Keeping that promise though… much easier said than done.

But Wil believes he can. And Ramsey believes Wil can and will bounce back from the misfortunes that have the potential to destroy her if she lets them. Their supportive, motivational back and forth is just one element of what has grown into a friendship neither of them would choose to do without. But could it be… more?

With their recent pasts littered with baggage and sorrow, and both of them facing uncertain futures, Wil and Ramsey have enough stress on their hands, but they’ll have to make a choice - continue their friendship as it was before, or risk it all for the possibility of something amazing?

She’s affectionately coined America’s sweetheart and rightfully so. If there was ever a more pure hearted, kind, genuine soul she’d give them a run for their money. As a former U.S. Olympic track star turned journalist, Wil is the picture perfect good girl! Raised in a loving two parent home by a world renowned boxer for a father and an Olympic trailblazer for a mother, she was destined for greatness. Just when everything in her life is seamlessly falling into place, Wil receives a blow that shatters her heart when just days before her wedding, 2 days to be exact, a scandalous affair is exposed involving her fiancé.

Suffering from a broken heart for a different reason, we have Ramsey a former pro NFL running back. Navigating grief after the loss of his queen, his mother due to cancer, Ramsey is trying to figure out how he continues without her. He’s always lived his life with the sole purpose of making her proud and now that she’s no longer with him in the physical form, he’s not sure what this new normal will look like.

Amidst their heartbreak, Ramsey and Wil had always been friends. For the past 3 years they’ve worked together as co-host of WAWG’s popular show “From the Sidelines”. They say grief and healing sometimes brings people together and this was definitely the case in this friends to lovers sports romance! I really enjoyed how CCJ established such a SOLID friendship between these two even before they took things to the next level.

There was just enough drama, suspense and laughs that kept me thoroughly entertained from beginning to end! We had trash ex’s trying to justify trash behavior. We had trash mistresses playing the victim. We had leaked nudes and plenty of scandals! CCJ and LB are putting their entire souls into this series and I can’t wait to dive into the next book!

I Love Ramsey & Wil….The friends to lovers storyline is definitely one of my favorites….Ramsey & Wil we’re colleagues that became really good friends….Wil suffered a devastating event in her life and Ramsey helped her through it….their friendship morphed into friends with benefits (although the attraction was also their from the beginning), that dynamic shift to include a pregnancy, then love & finally an engagement….Both Wil & Ramsey suffered other life changing events, but beside the development of their intimate relationship, Ramsey was able to return to a career he once loved as a professional football player…this really was a great story.

You know how you can read a book and it feels like a roller coaster ride, with all of it's dips and climbs and fast descent???? Well that is the TOTAL opposite of Wil and Ram. These two were more like a slow, easy carousel.... going round and round until they found their way. Determining Possession was all about friendship, lovers, family, promises, expectations, and taking a jump! If you are looking for a slow burn, this is it.

Wil was an All-American girl who not only had her future mapped out, but came from a family of black sports royalty. She was supported and encouraged in all of her endeavors, so when there was a chink in the plan, she had to adjust in a way that she wasn't used to. Didn't want others to see her crown slipping! Ram was right there to support her as a friend, so when it was time to become more, he slid right in.... literally!

Ram held his issues and thoughts close to his chest. He didn't ever want anyone that he cared about to worry about him, so he internalized everything. It's a good thing that Wil was there to balance him out.

Once I delved deeper into the story, I realized that these two were so much more than friends to lovers. They were best friends who became better lovers and I think a tear slipped when they showed that communication is key. This was a direct result of their friendship. When other factors began to insert themselves into their relationship, they handled the handle!

As usual, CCJ comes through with her #BlackLove excellence and makes us all believe in it just a lil bit more. If I had to sum up this story in one word, it would be: Providence!

Sidenote: I sure do hope that we get a play by play from Clay and Soriyah and I really think that Darius wasn't a totally horrible dude, Wil just wasn't his destiny.... but I'm not excusing his bad arse behavior!

Touchdown

This is book three of the Connecticut Kings and it has definitely become a favorite for me. I was ecstatic to hear that Love and CCJ were continuing this series. CCJ introduces us to new characters here: Ramsey and Wil. They started out as friends, but grew closer after Wil's life began to throw challenge after challenge her way. I loved that I got to connect with previous characters from this series. I also loved the length of this novel because when your reading from your fav, you never want it to end.
Love and Christina took this series to another level when they dropped a book trailer for it where you got to see a visual for these characters. You need to check this out if you haven't. I cannot wait til Love drops the next book in this series. I guess until this I will be re-reading this one.

Loved This Reread

I read this so long ago, I wasn't a reviewer. Grateful I am now. To hear this reread this time hit differently. CCJ's work has always been impeccable. Wil & Ramsey have always been a fav couple. Perfect story of experiencing better than you thought you wanted. A great friendship is way more important than a good romance! It's the ingredient that can't be substitute! 💜💛💚

One thing I love is a nice friends to lovers. Wil is fresh out an engagement from her trash ass ex. Wil and Ramsey are coworkers but are also friends. Once single Wil and Ramsey start acting on feelings for each other. Wil still getting her HEA with Ramsey🥰. I liked Ramsey going back to football as he promised his mom was nice too.

Delightful read introducing this couple in the 3rd part if the series. Christina C. Jones has a knack for bringing out emotions while reading her stories. I feel I know them personally. Such was the case for Ramsey & Wil. Despite their ups and downs, they found the middle & worked wonders with it. Great read

Christina C. Jones had Ramsey and Wilhelmina melting my darn kindle, and I almost burned my poor little fingers! 🔥🔥😂That Ramsey is really something else! Magic hands, magic lips, magic tongue--oops! Did I just say that?! 😜 And that magic voice that commands a woman's body to do whatever he pleases. Heck, every time he said to Wil, "good girl," hmmmm...*fans myself* I just about melted into a puddle on the floor! And Wilhelmina--I want to be her when I grow up! A beautiful, strong, and smart woman who knew the power she had within. I loved her sassiness as well as her vulnerability. And she was not afraid to ask the hard questions--both professionally and personally. Loved Wil!

But this story was more than just about their sexual chemistry. I couldn't get enough of Ramsey and Wil, and I loved how they started out as such great friends. CCJ did a fantastic job allowing readers to witness the ins and outs of their amazing friendship, as well as the frustrations that came along with the change in their relationship. Ramsey and Wil have become one of my favorite couples. I loved the way they supported and encouraged each other; offered a shoulder to lean on and an ear when they needed advice or just someone to listen them. I mean, they were definitely each other's biggest cheerleaders. I immensely enjoyed every bit of this story. It was the epitome of a beautiful, sexy, and truly heart-felt friends-to-lovers romance.

We simply adore the "friends to lovers" tropes. Seriously, these two are my favorites. Wil now has to rely on Ramsey for support as a result of her fiancé's embarrassment over his infidelity. But Ramsey gave her more as their friendship grew over the situation, and simply reading the attraction and how this connection developed was just beautiful . This couple's relationship was definitely challenged by the media chaos, but it also strengthened them. They both advanced in every area of their lives—both professionally and personally—together.

Amazing

When I say this book was everything. I mean that. Christina is just fantastic at this. I love her work. This couple was just amaze-ball, lol. Ramsey is everything and more. I couldn't think that Christina could top the last one, but she proved me wrong. If I could give it twenty stars, I would.

Best way to get over one…

3.5
This was a good read. I started struggling to stay engaged around 73% but as for me and friends to lovers mood we are full and happy! Ain’t nothing like having a good man help you get over a trash one! I also enjoyed the banter could have used more of it, even if it was a touch corny at times. Quiet as it’s kept I’m not a big sports romance girl so this series was low on my TBR but I’m intrigued now.

I really enjoyed this story. I'm a sucker for the friends to lovers trope!
What I especially loved was how those around Wil let her navigate her own journey, even when they knew she deserved better. Sometimes, you have to see it for yourself before you’re ready to move forward.
In the end, Wil and Ramsey got their HEA, and everyone who did them wrong got exactly what they deserved.

CCJ does romance so well!
Friends to lovers, sports romance. Will is on the heels of a very public break up, Ramsey is a friend offering support and comfort.
The friendship line is crossed into a beautiful romance. I love the way these two care for each other. 😍❤️🥰

Determining possession had me giggling and kicking my feet from beginning to end. I love a good sports romance and friends to lovers is becoming one of my favorite tropes especially when they don’t draw out the angst. I loved that this friends to lovers story had very little hand wringing. Wil and Ramsey had been coworkers and friends for three years and when they were both finally single they just easily let the relationship drift to where it naturally wanted to go. The sexual tension between two beautiful former professional athletes had to be off the charts and when they gave in to it, they gave in to it, honey! This book was sexy, funny, touching and just a feel good love story.

Wil and Ramsey aren't just coworkers, but have become solid as friends could be. When Wil's life spins out of control publicly, Ramsey is her shield and shooter. Ramsey has a lot going on himself and when he finds his way back on the playing field, he realizes it's not the only game he has to focus on. With restricted calls in play now that there's been an interception, will Ramsey and Wil make it into the end zone unscathed?

I. Don't. Know. What. To. Say!!!!! I am still an emotional wreck after reading this: total epitome of book deperession! I can't sleep and it's been a physical task to move on. I just can't get my life! Do you hear what I am saying??? I can't function!!! Having written a plethora of books, Jones never ceases to surprise me with her literary talents! The theme friends to lovers was definitely explored here, but she brought a fresh take that had me weeping for joy! I can't describe how refreshing and unique this storyline is; Ramsey and Wil's journey to lovers had so many twist and turns, I could barely keep up! The drama is beyond high in this book as Wil and even Ramsey's life gets placed on the 'Highlight Reel'. As public figures, they go through their fair share of controversy that will leave your jaw on the floor ...or picking up your Kindle to swing on someone! The pacing of the storyline was effortless and the lulls and highs of each scene is well placed and gives the reader a true literary escape!

I have to touch on the relationship dynamics of Ramsey and Wil: I can say without a doubt, Ramsey is now my fav book bae by Jones!!! His tough and brawny exterior is just right to handle Wil's emotional rants and his tender heart left me in tears as he went through internal struggles that touched me on a personal level. I haven't cried over many books, I can count them on one hand, but I sat and cried myself into a literal frenzy. Ramsey's emotional upheaval was so relatable to me and I loved how this author built each character up after they were so broken down emotionally and in some kind of way, physically. Wil and Ramsey's chemistry is through the roof and had me panting and crossing my legs! I know I called on the lort a few times as Wil was discovering just why Ramsey has a certain nickname *giggles*. Wil's public woes are intercepted by Ramsey and her self discovery with their newfound love was quite plausible. The timeline allowed for soooo much character development as these two tried to figure out their relationship.

The conclusion was meaty and every single question I had at the beginning of the book was answered. Every. Single. One! I appreciated Jones' knack for detail; her summation of Ramsey and Wil's story was hearty and the rush feeling readers can sometimes get when a lot is happening in a book did NOT happen here! She not only concludes Ramsey and Wil's story, but exposes us to some new and old characters who could possibly have their own book (please God)! I was also extremely extatic to see the infusion of past characters in the Connecticut Kings Series as well as other books written by Jones: we are able to spy in on Trent and Jade, as well as JJ and Cole whom help in the resolving of a lot of conflict in the storyline.

I still can't sleep. I can't move on. I'm just here, trying to get my life after this book! This has to be in my top 5 fav books..Ever. EVER! Do you hear what I am saying!? EVER!!!!!

Kudos to Christina Jones!

Friends make the best lovers

When the fairy tale relationship, life and career blow up her friend is the stability that she needs. Soon their friendship turns into something more. Life goes on and it's even better than what she planned for herself. There were many hoops for Wil and Ram to jump through but God kept pulling through for them. What could have been a heart breaking story ended up being the beginning of a beautiful love story.

They were champs in more ways than one!

Both Wilhelmina Cunningham and Ramsey Bishop were champs in their own right. They were besties through their mutual job even though Will had some resentment towards Ramsey upon first meeting but soon became friends who had each other's back through each other's personal trials.

I love the way Christina wrote these characters by making them friends first and then realizing that they were in love with each other. This story mostly portraits Black males in a positive light and the woman are strong and independent just like the ones I know in real light, handling the challenges life throws at them with dignity and grace. Their friends' support system was on point and amazing. I just love Ramsey's love for Will and how he calms her fears. The realization that Lena and Darius were just place holders until they were ready for each other's life was amazing. Will was a little nerve racking with her fears from thinking she was tainted with bad luck from Darius' cheating, losing her job and sex pix scandals to name a few. It was not until her mother made her see that she had more to be thankful for that she calmed down and allowed herself to go be swept up in the flow of love. Both she and Ramsey determined possession with each other for their own personal touchdown and HEA. In my opinion, this has been the best Connecticut Kings book so far, but I have one more to go. This is my first book by Christina and I sure will find more to read by her.

5+ Star Studded Review

The third installation in the CK series was a winning combination with a great storyline, beautifully crafted imagery ,and a sexy couple to deliver the chemistry and connection to make us believe them. Ramsey and Wil were co anchors for a television sports program. The two were thrust into a different level of friendship after Wil's ex publicly humiliated her by cheating on her with his TV costar, and lying about it for years. Ramsey had also survived his own relationship demise and the loss of his mother. Although the initial relationship after the breakups was more a FWB, it quickly developed into friends and lovers.. The other back story was about Ramsey getting a chance to get back on the field for the Connecticut Kings. As the story progressed, it was obvious Darius was Ramsey's place keeper. I don't think she loved him all of their relationship, he was just familiar. On the contrary, from the first intimate moment between Ramsey and Wil it was pure fire between them. The closet connection, Hot!, The Bali trip. Hot!... Then the back story with the supporting cast was nice. Tariq, Naima, Chloe, Cole, Jordan, Rashad, Trent, Jade and nem, it was very nice... I always love the parents... Bravo Mrs. Jones. You scored a victory!

4.5 stars. Classic CCJ. Friends to lovers, sports romance. Story of Ramsey and Will. Ramsey is a former pro football player turned on-air correspondent. Will is a former track Olympics star turned on-air correspondent. She's newly single after calling off her wedding once her ex's longterm affair is publicly revealed. Ramsey and Will are bffs and coworkers. Things start to heat up and slowly these two fall for each other. Great storytelling.

This was lovely. I’ve been working my way through CCJ’s catalog, and she has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This book involved a friends to lovers trope and I think it was executed beautifully. Ramsey and Wil were both super likable. You could tell they truly cared for one another before anything romantic even began. Everyone knows that a friendship is the best foundation for a relationship, and this book showcases that well!

Christina C. Jones is simply a marvel. I have read around ten of her books and they all were entertaining. She has the innate ability to weave a tale, with likable and multilayered characters, and slowly draw you into her fictional world. A world that"s usually so entertaining that you genuinely hate it when the story inevitably ends.

The Arizona and Arnez portions of this book are🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
