How far would you go to make your dreams come true?
Mackenzie Hart’s dreams of opening her very own restaurant are dashed when her dirt bag boyfriend takes her to the cleaners. It’s the final blow leaving her desperate and destitute. Tired of being kicked while she’s down, she knows she needs to do something drastic to change her fate.
But pouring her heart out to a handsome stranger may have just changed her luck for the better. Brock Walker needs a wife. And fast. If she agrees to help him with his problem, he promises to fund her dream of opening a restaurant.
It’s an offer she can’t refuse. All her troubles will be solved. Until she meets his twin brother, Ashton and all her plans go to hell…
When Haylee Thorne isn’t writing her stories, she works proudly as a registered nurse in Kentucky. Haylee loves to read and watch TV (she may or may not be slightly obsessed with anime), and there aren’t many movies she has not seen. She’s known to enjoy a good glass of champagne, and can eat an unlimited amount of French fries (seriously, it’s a problem). When she has some free time (as in time not spend working or writing), Haylee loves spending time with her family and friends. You can find Haylee on her webpage at http://hayleethorneauthor.com/ or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/hayleethorne... or on bookbub at https://www.bookbub.com/profile/hayle... .
True meaning of Beard = “a person who carries out a transaction, typically a bet, for someone else in order to conceal the other's identity.”
Mackenzie Hart has worked her entire life to reach her dreams of owning and running her own restaurant. Finally she has reached it only to come home to find that her live in boyfriend has ransacked their apartment and has emptied their entire savings account, where the money she saved to buy and open the restaurant was. (I struggled with why this “boyfriend” had access to all her savings, but....) Dreams shattered, she ends up at her best friends bar to drink her sorrows away. This is where she finds Brock Walker, a shining light in her darkest day with a proposal of a lifetime, or maybe not, time will only tell....
Brock Walker is being groomed to take over his grandfathers company, but first he needs a wife. Mission accomplished when he comes face to face with Mackenzie. She's fun, smart, beautiful, and in need of being emotionally rescued. Brock is emotionally running from fears of letting his family down. He wants nothing more than to run his family’s business and will do anything to get it, even if that means hiding his truth.
Mackenzie is on cloud nine with how things come together so quickly and finding a Prince Charming to rescue her is an added bonus. Little does she know that her life is all about to change, again. Ashton Walker, Brock’s twin brother, didn’t expect to come face to face with the woman he can’t get out of his mind. The shock he registers when he sees his brother down on one knee proposing to the woman of his dreams, is undeniable.
Ashton & Mac fight their attractions to each other, yet at the same time spend time together getting to know each other. When things become a little more complicated with their attraction, Mackenzie starts to back off before Brock & Mac’s secrets are revealed. Mac can’t chance the secrets coming out or hurting Brock and Ashton both. So what happens when she finds herself in love with two brothers, twin brothers, loving them in two completely different ways, with one giving her the option of fulfilling her business dreams and the other with fulfilling her forever dreams. This isn’t a book with cheating, this isn’t a book about a girl that can’t choose between two guys she loves, it’s about dreams vs reality.
I overall enjoyed this book. Struggled with some of it but it was things I could easily overlook. I didn’t necessarily like how rushed the ending was, I would love, and I mean LOVE, to see more to these characters. I also we wish we could have seen more of the development of the relationship with Ashton and Mac. I am however happy that at the end, all these characters were smiling as big as I was =))))
The only problem i had was with the characters, being adults they acted like a group of kids sometimes. And the hero, i like them strong, confident and a bit of an alpha. This one was whining all the time with no character, it's annoying as hell. The story and the idea was intriguing that's why i continued to read, to see how it's going to turn out but it turned out Blah! It was a short read, this i liked.
The good news? This was a super quick read that required very little effort to follow. The bad? This novel, while fated to be corny and contrite, could’ve been much more than it panned out to be. The forbidden romance was built upon a ridiculous premise, and things just got increasingly more ridiculous from there. It all seemed so rushed, including the tidy tie ups to some major plot devices. That being said, I could totally see this as a made for TV movie one day.
I'm releasing this one "without prejudice" (i.e. rating). The thing is, I like all the people. I could fault Thorne for the insta-lust, I suppose, but since I kind of like both parties and because Thorne has done an excellent job building highly compatible protagonists the insta-lust doesn't really matter. And the problem is that there is nothing but pain ahead for these characters.
It'd be one thing if a friend or reviewer I trusted had a reassuring review. But I picked this up on the strength of the awesome cover and intriguing copy, so that's not the case. Any takers?
I absolutely loved this book! Haylee has had me laughing and crying my way through. I was intrigued from the very first page and could not put this book down. It was amazing to see some of the Kingsley family in there and I’m looking forward to more very, very soon!
This was not good…like, at all. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting anything particularly spectacular but I hoped for a short, corny, and fun read. Instead I had a book that felt like something I would have read on Wattpad when I was 13. Every single character was one dimensional and none had any redeeming qualities, they weren’t likeable in the slightest.
I didn’t even hate this, I just really disliked it which somehow feels worse - at least hate comes with passion.
I think what hurts me the most is that this actually could have been really cool. Like, in my head, with the same premise, I can see an entire, engaging story. So many possibilities that could have made this fantastic.
This is EVERYTHING a romantic comedy should be! I literally was giggling out loud as I read Brock, Mackenzie and Ashton's love triangle. There were times when I thought I had the characters next move figured out, and then WHAMMO, Haylee would surprise me. The fact that there are unpredictable moments make the writing smart and the characters extra hard to resist. I love Mackenzie's sass and Ashton is now my new book boyfriend. Swwoooonnnn. I think it's Haylee's best story to date and seriously think she has found her niche with this book! If you're looking for a light, easy-breezy story that will tug at your heart strings and leave you smiling at the end, grab this book! I seriously fell in love with it.
There's a lot I didn't like - the writing, the rushed plots, the instalove, the random side plots - but I liked enough to settle at 2.5 stars. The main plotline was an unique enough twist on fake dating, and I enjoyed Ashton/Mac together... in the rare times that it happened. Which is the main reason why I rounded down.
“That’s hilarious.” “I’m not kidding.” “You’re drunk.” “You’re interested.”
This was a feel good book from beginning to end. I loved Mackenzie and Brock's relationship and I loved Mackenzie and Ashton's relationship (even though it was kinda insta-love). This book was a quick, easy and fun read. I love how Haylee incorporated a certain Kingsley into this book as well :). The ending to this book was my favorite part (especially the last few lines) because it put such a big smile on my face. Great Job Haylee!
This was a sweet rom-com. The engagement between Mackenzie and Brock was convenient for both until Brock’s twin shows up and steals Mackenzie’s heart. I would rate this a 3 ++ stars!

Mackenzie Hart is having a really, really bad day when she meets her savior in the form of Brock Walker. Her boyfriend has cleared out their entire account and their apartment and with that, her dreams of opening up her own restaurant go down the drain. What's a woman to do? Go drink her sorrows away at the restaurant where she just put in her notice. That's where Brock picks up on her distress and they form an instant connection. Is Mac drunk enough to take him seriously when he proposes she marry him, be his "beard" for two years so he can land his family company's CEO position over his twin brother, and he'll in turn fund her dream restaurant?
Sounds like a twisted Cinderella story, but when Mac meets Brock's twin and they can't ignore their attraction to each other, how will they handle it? How will Brock handle it?
I really liked The Beard. I wasn't necessarily expecting to, honestly, because the premise is a bit trite, but it's executed really well. Mac, in particular, is a breath of fresh air and I love what a great friendship she and Brock develop. Ashton, on the other hand, I didn't really end up liking. He's a bit moody and broody, which can be a good thing, in moderation, but he never let up and I didn't feel he was a great match for sweet, sassy Mackenzie. Brock actually would have been a better match, if he had only been interested in women... But, as it stands, The Beard is sweet and romantic enough to make up for Ash's shortcomings.

Rule #1 with a Rom-Com: don’t take it too seriously. They’re light-hearted, escapist fun! They’re like the romantic comedies Hollywood put out by the hundreds in the 1950’s… just sit back and enjoy them, don’t try to pick them apart and determine if the plot makes sense from beginning to end. Just laugh, swoon and enjoy!
So it is with The Beard. If you go into this story with a light-hearted expectation of escapist entertainment, you’ll have a great time. It’s a fun book. The author shows a great sense of humor with these zany characters and the fastest case of Insta-love I can recall. It doesn’t take long for the reader to realize what needs to happen for us to have our duly desired HEA. But how we get there… well, that’s the fun of this insanity. It’s a great, over-the-top romp of ridiculousness that’s positively delicious. If this had been done in the 50’s, I could see Cary Grant totally eating up the roles of both Ashton and Brock. Katharine Hepburn would have made an awesome Mackenzie opposite Cary Grant, as well. But I’m daydreaming…
As you can tell, this book won’t be for everyone. If you need a deep plot, serious characters who never deviate from their flight plan, and you’re too socially challenged to relax and LOL when you’re sitting by yourself, then this will definitely NOT be an enjoyable read for you. But if you’re ready for a little escapist fun, then enjoy this great read.
This was my very first Haylee Thorne book and being a fan of Romantic Comedies I knew I wanted to read this from the very first moment I saw the cover. I hadn't even read the blurb, I didn't know the premise of book but that beautiful, colorful cover drew me in and I am so glad it did.
The Beard is a refreshing take on the Romantic Comedy; it is chock full of fun and exciting characters that leave you wanting more. If you don't know what a beard is... it's when a woman pretends to be the significant other of a gay man. You can imagine the hijinks that could ensue.
Haylee doesn't get trapped in a Will & Grace type of story riddled with funny but crazy storylines, she creates a story uniquely her own without the unneeded hijinks. She creates scenarios and characters that feel true and real; characters that you want to be friends with.
Although, The Beard is at its core a Romantic Comedy it is really and truly a story of friendship; that unconditional type of love where you accept a person as they are, faults and all. It's a story that shows how friendship can bloom in the most unexpected of ways.
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Thorne and I'm hooked! The story was plotted perfectly from beginning to end. The characters are engaging and draw the reader into the story so effortlessly that you are truly sorry when the book is finished.
I loved the classic line in the beginning and the fact it was repeated at the end. I chuckled and giggled throughout the book at your descriptive dialogue about and between the various characters. I absolutely loved the humor in this book...so well done!
Ms. Thorne, you have been blessed with such a beautiful gift that is your imagination and it is reflected in your writing. Your ability to develop characters that are interesting and complex, even the supporting characters, was brilliant. I look forward to reading more of your books. I'm especially interested in reading about Mika's twin sister, Mikaela, as well as Brock. Hopefully they will get their own story. Each character was as interesting as Mackenzie and Ashton. Amber and Faye intrigued me as well. I'm not sure how you managed to pull that off. I'd liken your style to Penny Reid and R.L. Mathewson. Loved it!
In my sing song voice”I love falling in love”..... Haylee has done it again and this time with her new Rom Com, The Beard. I honestly did not know what this phrase meant, was this cute chick on the cover in love with drop dead gorgeous man with a beard? I couldn’t wait to find out and as I read page by page I laughed so hard out loud and said to myself this is genius! I loved meeting M, Brock and Ashton. So easy to like, M is my favorite in this book. She had it rough in the beginning but instead of wallowing in self pity, she picked herself up real fast and was determined to start again. Luck have it that her path collided with Brock Walker and this hilarious Hallmark of a gem takes off! I extremely recommend this! Every reader needs this in their life, you will experience all the feel good emotions meeting these characters! Warning though, you may look like the joker after this one....the smile will be permanently on your face! Thank you so much Haylee Thorne you continually make my reading better and better, this is why I’m a Book Hoarder! Oh P.S, at the end of the book are little glimpses of what’s to come next... so EXCITED!!!!
Fantastic !!I devoured this story,it lured me in and kept me giggling, enthralled and reading until the very end. Mackenzie, has fallen on hard times, because her ex has taken everything from her,and dreams of her owning her own restaurant are slipping away. But a chance meeting in a bar where she meets Brock, might change all that.Pouring her heart out to him,has them making a deal for Mac to become his wife ,so he can become CEO in his grandfather's company. But Mac didn't bargain on Brock having a Gorgeous Twin brother Ashton, and when these two meet the chemistry between them is electric and that is when the sparks, begin to fly. They fall hot and heavy for one another...I loved all 3 characters and you will fall in love with them too and all of their shenanigans. This was such a wonderful, funny ,sweet, and heartwarming read .It will make you feel warm and tingly inside with amusement,it was thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. I highly recommend it.
3.5 Stars. This is such a great story, and I really enjoyed the characters. It was very cliched in the "everyone is drop dead gorgeous" kind of way... but honestly what else do we expect from a RomCom!? This was a really easy read too, and I blew through it in one day... perfect summer beach book. However, as much as I loved the story, the characters, and the idea of this book... the writing wasnt great and it was in need of some SERIOUS editing. There was so much I thought Thorne could have gone more into, instead it was kind of glossed over. Maybe its just because I enjoyed it and wanted more! But the writing was just kind of simplistic. And Im not sure if it was just the kindle version or what, but there were so many editorial and grammatical errors that I wanted to scream. Hey Editors.... get your shit together. But overall enjoyed this one and could totally see it becoming a movie... (starring beautiful people, of course).
Mackenzie hits a rough patch in her life when SOMEONE decides to do her dirty and steal a huge opportunity out from under her. Down on her luck she hits the bar where one hot AF man sits beside her and proposes a deal that will make all her dreams come true. Then Ashton pops up… They have an instant connection. Talk about throwing curve ball into what should have been an easy fix. I do not want to take anything away from you learning about these characters, but I do adore them and I know you will too. Mackenzie, Brock, and Ashton will have you laughing, sighing and flat out falling in love with them. You need to read this book! Haylee Thorne never disappoints and I was drawn from the first page. READ THE BEARD!!!!!!!!!! I received this ARC in trust of an honest review. So flippin awesome!
seems like its hard to go wrong with billionaire twins.
except the one M is committed to is the one who doesn't love her - and can't.
a somewhat funny, somewhat sad, romance mix-up
the sad is in part M, who has feelings for the straight brother, in part me, because I hate seeing anyone feeling compelled to need a beard in this day and age.
also a bit sad that Brock's coming out is anecdotal, and even his twin and grandparents who raised him don't really know his heart's desire.
romance elements are funny nonetheless. a fun, light read.

OMG! Haylee Thorn sure knows how to draw you in from the very beginning of The Beard! Mackenzie down on her luck sits down at the bar where she used to work and a handsome man sits beside her and they strike up a conversation, Brock proposes a deal of a life time so she takes it and then in walks his twin Ashton from the first time their eyes meet they where goners. There a lot of twist and turns as they continue with want is going on between them, but there is this little deal that stands in their way! Will Mackenzie and Brock get what they want or will Ashton have something to say about it? To find out you NEED to read this book!
This book was about a marriage of convenience, Brock wanted to get married so he can become the CEO of his grandfathers company when he retires and Mackenzie was to get her dream restaurant. Basically Mackenzie’s ex robbed her of everything so she agreed to marry Brock. Brock thought his grandparents wouldn’t accept him because he was gay. Then one day Mac ran into his twin brother Ashton, feelings started between them. Quickly it became harder for them to hide there feelings for one another. In the end basically Brock told Ashton the truth and Mac and Ashton got married. Was a happy ever after.
This was really a cute, sweet funny story. I enjoyed it a lot. Brock and Mackenzie make an agreement with each other. They really need each other. Everything goes well, until M sees Brock's twin brother Ashton. They have an instant connection. It makes EVERYTHING complicated!! I don't want to spoil it for you, because you have to read it, but I love the trio. Brock is really a sweet guy, you could really see M and his relationship blossoming, and you could read how much values her being in his life. I loved reading how hard Ashton was falling for his brother's fiancee'. I would definitely recommend this read to anyone.
“That’s hilarious.” “I’m not kidding.” “You’re drunk.” “You’re interested.”
Perfect from beginning to end!
When Mackenzie finds herself in a predicament, she meets Brock Walker, who promises to fund her dream if she will agree to be his wife. What could go wrong with agreeing to marry a handsome, future CEO? Enter Ashton Walker, Brock’s twin brother. Will Mackenzie follow her heart or stay true to her word?
I absolutely loved each character in this book! Well, all of them except for M’s crazy ex Chris. I’m a sucker for sweet, happy ever afters and Haylee did not disappoint!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
3 1/2 stars Mackenzie’s dream has always been to open her own restaurant. After she finds out that her boyfriend stole all her money and with her dream suddenly too far away, she visits her best friend’s bar. There’s where she meets Brock, whom has a very interesting proposition for her. Brock needs to find a wife in order to take over his grandfather’s company. The situation isn’t so good anymore, when Mackenzie meets Brock’s twin brother, Ashton. Their attraction is instant but they try to fight it. I felt like the end was a little rushed but overall I liked the book!!
