Originally published November 2012 Now includes bonus novella ELIXIR History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time.
Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday—to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner... and so is Aiden.
If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"—which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time—she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.
But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed. Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

Well, there’s a lot to unpack with this book. Many aspects were incredibly predictable for starters. Seth, Lucien, etc. but the one most predictable thing that seriously pissed me off is the fact that Alex will do stupid and impulsive things that she was warned not to do and it will get her in trouble. If she would literally only just LISTEN! Holy fuck it’s not hard. That’s the reason for the lower review cause her obnoxious personality is getting old. You don’t have to punch and assault everything that pisses you off, too. That’s also getting old. I feel like she hasn’t really had any growth, more just is suffering from the consequences of her own actions. But, all that being said, the plot was fun and I enjoyed the pace of the book. I’m excited for the next one!
I've been VERY sick, so I didn't read for five days. WHO AM I? Regardless, this book was what I needed.
Is this series great, well-written, thought out, and unique? Absolutely not! Do I have a good time, love the romance, giggle, kick my feet, and get so invested? Absolutely!
This series just gets better and better for me. The romance FINALLY sparked in this book and I was a goner. I love this man, I fear. The first half of this book definitely felt a bit slower-paced, but it picks up as you go on. This edition includes the novella, Elixir but I will be reviewing that separately!
No wayyyyyyy!!!!! I cannot wait to read the next book.
I honestly enjoyed this one way more than the first two and while the twists were extremely predictable (you saw it from book 1) and still a slower paced series, I did enjoyed the contents of this book and where the story is heading. The writing is extremely easy to follow and while we’ve seen this storyline before I think there is some uniqueness in the Apollyons / God plot.
My heart kind of hurts… because I really do like Seth. I’m so mad. Alex is also a dumbass but she is 17-18 so I guess 🙄
Aiden is boring to me, idk why but I really do feel like he lacks depth while Seth is way more complex and explored. Leon ….is all I’m going to say. I knew it from the moment Alex said that joke about Apollo and he got all pissy 😂.
Super interested in how or if JLA will continue to incorporate more gods into this series, I hope she does.
Also, this is not a series I would read for the romance. It’s weird and I’ve never really been a fan of YA romance so….
The breakneck speed of this series kinda slowed down in this book because the twist/reveal wasn't strong enough to support a whole-book-long mystery when it was super obvious from the start. I wasn't expecting some of the details of the confrontation which kept me interested, but I'm hoping that the next book(s) pick back up again now that we're no longer pretending we don't know what we all know. IYKYKIKLK.

What Kept/Didn’t Keep Me Reading: I truly didn’t think that Deity could redeem itself, but it has. It was a difficult obstacle to tackle when it came to the beginning of the book. It felt like it was a lot of Alex whining, and nothing life altering happening. Once she had hit eighteen, the stakes truly changed, and I had found my interest re-peeked. Will we truly lose Alex?
It was also pleasant to see Deacon and Aiden’s life outside of the Covenant a little bit as well, plus you see more into their brotherly bond.
Funny side note, can I just say how hilarious it is that Persephone is always portrayed not serious in any version of a Hades x Persephone inclusion. [Insert Spoiler Name here] lets her win a round of Mario Kart on the Wii, so she owes them a favor. Haha!
What Would I Read Next from This Author:
Apollyon is next on the list, but I’ll be waiting closer to October 1st when the reprint of Sentinel comes out.
H-How do I go back to other books after this? So far I have been holding my breath for way too long without realizing, been absolutely devastated by and about fictional characters (again) and have seriously questioned my taste in books at thirteen (also again). And, as a loving addition, had my heart destroyed by the included novella. I expect to be straight out sobbing within the next book. Don't get me wrong, I know there's "Erwachen des Lichts" as a whole sequel-series after this - I read them some (long) time ago, but it's nOt gonna be the same (aNd I only own the german version). How did I wait so long to get those books??? Imagine If I had never read them again (okay, I would have anyway - but imAgIne). Oh, and THEY WATCHED SUPERNATURALLLLL I LOVE THEM SO MUCH HOW COULD THEY BE ANY BETTER - THAT'S RIGHT THEY COULDN'T BECAUSE ThEY ARE WATCHING SUPERNATURAL *skips off to start the next one*
3.5⭐️ This book has made me dread the next books and I hate that. I hate when I start a series and love it and then the books start getting on my nerves to the point I don’t even want to read them. Alex is annoying. And dumb. I’m trying sooooo hard not to hate her but I’ve never been this annoyed by a FMC written by JLA ever. Like girl, for someone so reckless and brave and who’s supposed to be a bad ass you sure are making some dumb af choices.. 🤞🏻 the next book makes me enjoy this series again and that I don’t drag through it. Because let’s be honest, at this point I’m not going to dnf, even if it may be tempting.
It took every ounce of effort but I finished the book. I really hate the romance aspect of this book, which is a significant part of it, so I really considered DNFing several times throughout the middle of the book. However, the fantasy plot of this book is so interesting and the book ended at a place where I'm excited to continue.
I also think I don't really love the MFC.... she just seems to lack connections a lot of the time?? I can't tell if it's just because that's who she is or if it's because this is a YA book?
This book was honestly so boring until I swear to god the last 20 pages.Like it was an actual waste of time but I did love the characters.I love Alex although she is annoying at times and honestly I don’t know why but I still like Seth 😘😭but like everyone hates him.I just find him so sexy and cute 🥰 ,but Aiden is so cutie 🩷🩷🥹he makes me want to cryyyy.Jennifer needs to learn to get to the point.😭😩😅😦
This book was excellent, the best in the series so far! The drama, the angst, and all the twist and turns? Perfection! I love a rebellious Aiden and I’m crossing all my fingers and toes that Seth comes back to himself! I don’t like him like this but man is it adding to the story! I love how we are finally seeing the gods and goddesses in the book. They’ve been in the background too much and never felt like part of the story until now. I’m excited to see where it goes! And that ending? WTF….
You have sentenced me to the painful death of choking into my own emotions. This book was so painfully perfect that I have lost all my desire to live before I have finished the whole series.
More action and we are finally getting deeper into the meaning of two apolloyns and how it's all going to unfold. I'm so glad after 2.5 books we finally got somewhere on the love triangle. I'm hoping it's not going to fall apart now. It was so satisfying to finally get the acceptance of the love between these characters. Seth has spiraled and although I want to have hope he can be redeemed, it's not looking too great. It's kind of disappointing but, not surprising that Lucian is truly the snake Alex always thought he was.

I got lost in reading this so many times. I can't even begin to explain how much I enjoyed this, and how shocked I am from all that has happened. I can't wait to continue reading, because that cliffhanger was not fair. ❤️
