I really enjoyed this story. It has been a minute since I've found a book that I couldn't stop reading until the end this was one of those stories. It was complete without any holes, the only question I had at the end, was Janie's mother still alive. Overall really good book.

Race relations
This book was different from any of the other books that I have read by this author. There was a good mix of historical fiction and steamy sex. This book was a good reminder of the horrible things that have happened to black people in the past and how much we still need to do in the US to improve in light of everything happening in the news. I really enjoyed this one by Ms Jasper and recommend reading it.

I have so many feels about this book. First it was a lot better than expected because of the title. This is an epic love story that shows love is love no matter what you look like on the outside.
The story follows Janie a black woman and Burke a white man who find love against all odds in rural Mississippi. These two just bonded from the soul.
I loved the story line of how Burke is that one white man in town that all the black people like and somewhat trust. He is the kindest man with the biggest heart and has no preference of white and black people. He is just who God made him as he explains to Janie when she questions him.
He knew from the moment he laid eyes on her that she would be his. It took Janie a bit longer to warm up to the idea. Who could blame her? She was the one with all of the pressure. In the 1930s it was forbidden for them to be together, not to mention she would be ostracized by both blacks and whites if anyone found out.
Eventually she decides she doesn't care because she loves the big tall man who loves her unconditionally - the one she gave her innocence to.
Burke was sort of a Brute, but he was tender with Janie. I love how he took care of her and looked out for her. She was the only woman in his world and he was quick to send the white lady who was eyeing him packing.
This story should be taught in schools to help people overcome their fear of other races. It would be a great lesson on taking people for who they are and not what they look like.

A really good book I enjoyed it a lot and will definitely read again. I recommend it and I love that it had a lot of twists and unexpected turns.

Better than expected
I truly liked this story for its strong period depiction and true to life journey into love, loss and family. This is a difficult read on the heart because this story could easily be a real life experience for many in a period that unfortunately did exist and still does in some places. A solid read and well written. Thank you for bringing this story to life on the page! I recommend this read.

Wow
This was my first time reading this author and I enjoyed it! I love historical romance books and when you make it historical IR, I'm all for it. I loved this book. It held my attention and it was really good. And hot! Wow is all I can say. I'm going to look for more from this author.

I loved it!!!
I loved it!!! I didn't think that I would be soo enthralled with this book. But I read it anyway. I'm glad I did. I didn't want it to end. I wish it was another book and it would become a series. Yes I loved it that much. I want to know if they went back to Mississippi to live. If not, did Burke sell his land. And what happened to they're new blended family. Did they ever get married. Enquiring minds would like to know.

Love conquers hate
The Deep South in the early 1930's with Jim Crow laws and hate every where. Not all people were hateful to other races but there were enough to cause death and bloodshed over pigmentation. Burke knew that it was the person not the color that made one worthy. The violence and bloodshed is pretty vivid in this love story. There was no real hiding from the ugliness and hatefulness. They found a way. They were destined from child hood to come together again. Their love was strong and true. Definitely adult reading here. He loved her well and she loved him beyond all fear a retribution. Love wins.

One has to chase their own paradise
That's what Janie and the colored folk of Rickshaw soon came to find out. They had to do what was best for their own lives regardless of all the evil that was going on in their small country town. Despite all of this Burke knew he wanted Janie when he saved her from assault years prior and delivered an unforgetable kiss to Janie. For seven years he tried unsuccessfully in trying to find her again. It was not until she returned to town to teach that they seem to pick up from where they left off. Burke knew he had to make her his despite the Jim Crow prohibitions of such relationships even though those types of relationships were commonly carried on and hidden for generations.
Burke really was not a race traitor. He was more Christian than some of the so called good folk of the white community. With his ability to fluidly mix between both worlds there, by providing information and protection to the Black community.
The author wrote a heart wrenching story of two people in love whose own communities were against them. It was a very dangerous time in history for Black folk, especially women. In order to find happiness and chase their own dreams, many people left these small communities for the north. But Janie and Burke were able find their own HEA in New Orleans.

Good read
I enjoyed this book. It will not be the last time I read a bwwm historical novel by this author. I loved both characters. I loved their hearts, their resilience, their determination to be together, regardless of what anyone said or did. I loved Burks sense of fairness and how he judged people based on who they were and not what they looked like. I loved Janie' s drive. This was a good book. As I read it, I thought how sad it was that we are still battling 1930's race issues in 2017. It's a damn shame that people cannot be who they are. Love who they want and live their lives. Racism is a cancer and LIKE cancer it kills. Love needs to be the cure. I hope people can walk away having learned many real life lessons from this fictional novel.

I'm going to be very honest here this read like mediocre PWP fanfiction. The first encounter was so far fetched. The sex scenes, for that time, seemed out of place. The story was underdeveloped and the author;s skills are questionable. I am surprised I finished it. There wasn't much pay off for completion. This is a hard pass, unless you want to read some porn. I actually don't mind reading porn but don't try to masquerade as anything but what you are.

I'll admit I haven't read in a while. This was my 2nd book back in the game for me and a first time read for me by this author.
The Story is about Janie and Burke both have a connection to Rickshaw Mississippi. They meet as teens and later again as adults. From the jump there is an unfocused element to this story.
You hear about Janie's mom but you aren't too sure of her story. Seems like it was supposed to be important but it falls flat towards the end and you're left wondering what happened with her mother.
Then there is Burke and his cousin Francis and his wife and the random interaction she has with Janie. There is no real explanation as to why she is there because I immediately think she was coming for Burke but no. Just random...
Then there is Emmett and why he is really in town but why he decided to educate a kid who had family around the town... Again, Random.
The sex scenes, while they were sexy, the talk just didn't place me in that time lol I felt like a description of a pornhub scene was happening lol The entire story takes place during the great depression. Not much mention of it.
Then the random old lady to reveal Burke's secret. The story was unfocused, uncentered, and it just left me with more questions than answers at the end of each chapter. That's what kept me invested in the book, to see if my questions would get answered (they didn't lol)

I had been wanting to read this novel since I received an email it was available. Luckily I was able to read this novel through Kindle Unlimited. I did not know what to expect. I have read a few of Ms. Jasper's novels in the past and some I've liked and others I did not. This novel was surprisingly sweet and romantic. I enjoyed the nice steady pace of the build up to Burke and Janie's romance. I had figured out a few things before they were revealed, which I am sure most readers had, but I do not want to give away spoilers in this review. The end of the novel was weird to me. I do not understand why Burke and Janie felt obligated to take Curtis. That relationship seemed stiff and awkward to me. I gleaned the very end of the novel since others were upfront with their opinions on the last sex scene. Overall the novel was a great read since I read it in one day. Maybe Ms. Jasper will venture to write another interracial romance period piece.

Janie and Burke - Opposites attract
This is a great book. The characters, Janie and Burke, were excellent together. I related to this book from experience in the 50’s and 60’s. (SPOILER ALERT) It was a breath of fresh air the way Burke loved Janie, their unborn baby Jem and Curtis, who Ben encouraged them to take with them because he was really a genius and just like them, had no future in Rickshaw and it’s prejudice.
They moved to New Orleans and had a much better life…together.

Such A Good Experience
This was.such a good story and written in a way that you get to see the love in a new and forbidden love. The writer let's us see the inside of this relationship and experience all the good and wonderful things in this love.We also get to see the reality of what the times were like and some of the ugly things that happened. The writer handles this what such class. A really good romance with enough drama and reality to keep you interested.

Historical Love ❤️
This story captivated my interest from the beginning bringing back stories told by relatives of what happened in the Deep South between white men and black women. Burke and Jane met while children, yet she hadn’t remembered him til they kissed! The events leading to their leaving Mississippi and finding a home in New Orleans does not let the reader down. Good research appears to have been thoroughly sought…thanks for the read!

A great love
I love the characters Burke and Janie. The times were definitely authentic and disturbing. It makes you think of the times your loved ones survived in. I loved how their love started with a kiss as teenagers. I appreciate the nice twist with Burke. Interestingly enough both their mothers were prostitutes. I don't want to be mean but cousin Francis got what he deserved for putting so much ugliness out into the world. Really enjoyed their journey.

A Now Book for Interracial relationships
Book got a slow start for me. One of those books that could make you mad or maybe make you think. I thought the relationship between Burke and Janie was written in the era of the south where they were still thinking races should stick to their own kind. You do get a surprise in the end.

I enjoyed neither the hero, nor the heroine, nor the story. It could be my bias against black girls picking up with white men who can't read, but I just really didn't care for this guy and his hot springs. He was good, but all I really remember thinking was, "Nope."

I very much enjoyed this story. Janie and Burke were sexy, fun, interesting and exciting. Reading their story was uplifting and saddening all at once. Some super hot sex between these two from start to finish. Well done Jamila. A

Easy reading story ....
that didn't go too far into the segregation in the USA. It went far enough but it was mainly about Janie and Burke and the difficulty they had to get together and stay together. Nice read.

Great Read
A really great read . However, some of the scenes will make you mad, especially when it came to the mistreatment and unjust killings within the black community. This novel again proves that against hatred love always wins

Wonderful read.
It was a great book. Quick read. Difficult to put down. I read it in a couple of days. I haven’t read. Book this quickly in a long time. I can’t wait to read more of the author’s books.

Not mess.
This book was chaotic mess. The author simply pluck incidents out of the air and added them to the story...no continuity; no buildup; no explanation; the situation just appeared. One star is for the potential of the story and one star for the smexing. Skip this book.

I loved this book.
Jamila Jasper is a sensational author. I truly enjoyed Race Traitor. I loved the romance and the love between the characters. A book worth reading. I finished this book at exactly 3 am this morning. I could not put it down. A wonderful read.

IDK what I was thinking. I think I just really wanted to read a historical romance with a Black woman. 2 stars
interesting read.
3.5 stars. I liked that the book stayed true to the times. Beware the sex sciences are graphic, I wasn’t expecting it to be that graphic. But I can’t blame anyone but myself for not knowing. I critique is mainly the abrupt time skips in the story, and I wish there was a bit more time of them getting to know each other.
