Design Thinking for Visual Communication

Rate this book
How do you start a design project? How can you generate ideas and concepts in response to a design brief? How do other designers do it? This book will answer all these questions and more. Now in its second edition, the highly popular Design Thinking for Visual Communication identifies methods and thought processes used by designers in order to start the process that eventually leads to a finished piece of work. Step-by-step guidance for each part of the process is highlighted by real-life case studies, enabling the student to see teaching in practice. This focus on ideas and methods eschews an abstract, academic approach in favour of a useable approach to design as a problem-solving activity. The new edition now includes contributions from a broader international range of design practices and adds depth to existing case studies by looking in greater detail at some of the processes used.

Great book. The language is nice, the examples are solid and interesting, and the layout itself is very well done. I've never read a design book with such proper layout before.

I read this by skimming. It's more about process, divided into: forming ideas through doodling, research, idea generation by questioning the brief, refinement, prototyping, and implementation, including the physical media used.

Great book for my learning journey to design.

I am not a graphic designer, but an illustrator looking for design tips. In that light, this book was very informative and helpful, at just the right level for me. I like the way it is laid out, it's chapters are topic centered and break down bigger issues like type, layout, etc. It made it very easy for me to choose what I wanted to learn. Great book!

Feels like a anthology of ads for the featured designers fairly well disguised as an educational book.

A little dated: I saw the words “palm pilot” at least once. Some great design solutions, some quite mediocre.
