Seldom do I write a review before I finish a book, but how tf does this one have such a low rating?! It's delightful. Mortimer captures how I picture Shakespeare's England, at least: bawdy, disgusting, fun, dangerous, and the prose and voice is *mwuah*. An aged actor who was once one of the finest girlboy talents to play in the Globe recalls the theater's glory days and I love the spin the author puts on Shakespeare's and the Earl of Southhampton's relationship. [I think reading this in Hungarian translation puts an extra zest on everything. :>]

Finished this in the days before the start of the Israel-Iran war. It became one of the most influential books of my life, and an incredibly fun read.
