Having been abandoned by her parents as a child, it’s a lesson she’s learned the hard way. Now, having graduated from art college saddled with debt, she’s struggling to make ends meet. When a strange old woman gives her a cryptic message offering help, she scoffs at the idea: other people can’t be trusted, right? But when a sixteenth century warrior appears out of nowhere to save her life she might just be forced to challenge that assumption.
Lachie MacFarlane is sick of his life. As the laird’s nephew his duty is clear: the clan comes before all else—including Lachie’s happiness. Facing the prospect of an arranged marriage with a woman he doesn’t love, Lachie wants out. So when a strange old woman gives him the opportunity to travel to the future to aid someone in trouble, his jumps at the chance. Little does he know that decision will send them both hurtling back in time —and right into danger.
Thrown together in a world of peril and intrigue can Maya and Lachie find a way home? And more importantly, can they learn to trust each other?
Katy Baker was born in London to an English mother and an American father. She grew up a stone's throw from Hampstead Heath which remains one of her favourite places in the world. During her twenties she spent several years living in San Francisco where she developed an abiding love of bagels before returning to her beloved London. She lives in south London with her husband and a very grumpy bulldog.
Katy's books explore the intricacies of human relationships with plenty of spice thrown in. What would life be without a little spice?

Once again a fantastic romantic story. Great writing that keeps you turning the pages. Strong characters and a very well thought out story. Not to be missed.
The premise of the story was cute. The development of the characters was lacking. I felt she spent more time developing the relationships between Maya and the family than she did with Maya and Lachie. I was also disappointed by the sex scenes (I skipped over them--easy to see where things were going to go). I don't need to read those intimate scenes. To me it cheapens the love story between the two characters, not strengthen it. I read reviews before I read a book to see if there is anything inappropriate in a book, and I did not see any that mentioned the sex scenes...so here you go. Be warned.
I love time travel and wish it was real at times. Katy Baked has woven this series and I can't get enough. This episode was as exciting and enthralling as the first ones. I'm reading them in order and I'm loving them!
This is the worst of Katy Baker's 3 books I've read this week. The lead characters were not even likable; the female is too snarky. The story framework is the same in all her books, ending in a bedroom scene. The lack of historical accuracy in all her writings is overwhelming, as well as the lack of knowledge in how the world works, in general. Her books all require fact checking by a qualified editor.
She consistently writes in words that were not a part of the historical period, 1550s in this book: shark was coined in 1568, and wire wasn't made until 1568. She writes of the Scots accepting 21st century technology (cell phones and cameras) with ease, when in fact, it would have been viewed as witchcraft. The American female lead brings her cell phone with a solar charger back in time with her. The solar charger is the only smart fact written into this story. The story is circa 2017, so the other time-traveling female from twenty years earlier would have had a cell phone circa 2007, which is still working 20 years later? A Scot uses the term 'there's no time like the present' which wasn't first used until 1562. She's writing an American into the stories, but Americans would never say: got it in one, their father 'cleared out', or ask for a feather mattress. This girl is unlikely to know what a feather mattress is. But, she picks up two rocks in the woods and starts a fire with them, except one would have had to be flint. I doubt the author knows this. She also doesn't know that 'fresh green grass' would not 'carpet the ground' under a 'dense woodland' where 'the sky is all but obliterated by the thick branches above.'
The best part of her books are the covers. I really can't take any more of this poor writing, Katy Baker goes on my blacklist.
This is an OK time-travel romance, but I did have some issues with it.
First off, Maya adapted to her unexpected time-travel way too easily to believe. I think she would have been a lot more freaked out by it then she was. Also, the highlanders would have been much more concerned with her strange talk and clothes than they were. They just kept thinking she must be "daft", and accepted her behavior as normal for someone from America. It seemed like they just accepted all her differences too easily. I didn't buy it.
I had a hard time liking Lachlan in this one. He was often rude, overbearing, and bossy. He knew that Maya was from the future, and knew that women of that time did not behave like women from his time (his mother was from the future, after all) -- so he should not have expected Maya allow him to boss her around. He should have taken the time to explain why it was not safe for her to be so independent. I honestly didn't see why Maya fell for him. He did get better, but it took him a while. I also hated that nickname of Lachie -- sounds like a little boy's nickname.
I didn't buy that Maya and Lachie were in love. They were definitely in lust, but they annoyed each other so often that I just didn't buy their love connection. Then when Lachie didn't tell her he was betrothed, I'm shocked she forgave him for that so easily.
I also thought that this story was very similar to the others in the series. There is unexpected time-travel , the h is rescued by a hot highlander, causes trouble with her modern ideas, falls in love with the hot highlander, does something stupid so that she needs to be rescued again, and then everything ends in an HEA. This one did have a slight twist on the time-travel aspect, but the plot was still very similar to the other books.
The story was mildly entertaining, and I did like Irene, so I will read the next in the series -- but I probably would not continue the series if it wasn't free with Kindle Unlimited. Because of the issues I noted above, it gets 3 stars from me.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Irene MacAskill is at it again, bringing another couple together but love doesn't always go smoothly. Having been abandoned as a child and growing up mainly in foster care, Maya Charles trusts no one. Maya is a struggling artist and has only one item of any true value, an emerald necklace that her mother gave her. A businessman has offered to buy it several times but Maya doesn't want to let it go. When she's forced to sell, she goes to the man's office only to discover he's not what he seems as he refuses to give her the promised money. She is facing off with the man and his thugs when, out of nowhere, a large man in a kilt appears and rescues her bringing her back to his time in 16th century Scotland. Lachie MacFarlane is sick of his life as the laird's nephew especially the arranged marriage that is set up for him with the daughter of a neighboring clan. Lachie and Maya must travel through another neighboring clan's territory to get back home and that clan isn't friendly. When the laird's son of that clan sets his sights on Maya, she must learn to trust Lachie.
I discovered this series through my Kindle Unlimited subscription and have been reading it straight through. Both this book and the series are wonderful. Katy Baker has well-developed characters and I love the way she builds onto the families who were featured in previous books. I also love the looks she gives into the history of Scotland. I highly recommend this series and suggest starting from book one.
Really 3.5 Stars. Although, I liked the concept and the writing was basically decent it was so much the same as previous books in the series that it got boring and I began skimming. I understand there is a component of sameness but there has to be a difference, a real difference in the main characters. This felt too much like one of the other books. In fact the first in the series.
The first 2 books were pretty good in this series and that is what made me keep going. They were different enough with good kick ass women. The only thing was it is a bit of a formula concept and so there really were no surprises or twists in the following books.
The author has a habit of telling instead of showing. There is a lot of head talk going on and that is annoying in my humble opinion. I like action, show me what the character is like don't tell me what the character is like by giving me all the head talk. There was some showing or I wouldn't have continued the stories.
Another exciting and fantastic book by Katy Baker. Maya has gotten herself into a world of trouble when a man steps in to save her. Not just any man but one dress in an old- fashioned highlander way. Lachie was given a choice and he chose to help her. To watch out for her and to keep her safe. From the beginning they were attracted to one another but Maya could see no other way than to return to her time and Lachie is miserably betrothed to a neighboring clans daughter. Time together allows them to have conflict and to argue, both are hot-headed so it was easy to do. What they didn’t realize was this time together would allow them to grow closer and their feelings to grow. What will happen when she falls and then realizes that he withhold the truth of his future from her? Awesome story!! Loving this series!
Other people tell you about the book. I can Not right as well as this author. I will tell you the emotions the book makes you feel. Oh my gosh are you ready to cry? I did I hear you scream at the characters? I was. This is your book you do not want to put down. Every Romance has a good ending. But it’s the good author who makes you want to read to the end of the book. This is the book you will not want to put down. You were so happy when they finally “get it together” the sensual/sexual scenes are so realistic. Do you want to be proud of them. Did I mention this book was so well written that you feel, emote everything.
Passionate and light, sweet, warm, interesting variety of characters
This story is a little treat, a retreat from life's challenges, a tonic for your spirit. Maya, a struggling artist whose had to fend for herself her whole life doesn't understand the goodness of trusting others or the strength and mutual satisfaction of interdependence. Her experiences with Lachlie and his clan teach her a new way to live. Lachlie, raised in a wholesome, supportive castle-village environment, has more or less done what he's been raised to do, never having stretched himself beyond the expectations of his clan. His struggle is a fundamental as Maya's.
I really liked this series, but this time, I felt Maya accepted her presence in the past way too easily. There is little anguish or fear; I'm sure I would have completely panicked in her situation. The love story is sweet but Lachlan is not honest with her. Hiding his bethrothal, wanted or not, is not a way to a lady's heart. The villain is believable; selfish, greedy and willing to kill for his own ends, Niall is a nasty character through and through. His end was horrible and I struggled to think he did deserve it. I would have preferred the modern day thugs to take care of him and leave him stranded in a strange world, all alone.
I liked this story. It wasn't the best time travel romance I 've ever read, but it definitely wasn't the worst. There were a few instances that made me go, "Huh?" but overall the storyline and characters were good.
Maya goes from certain death in the 21st century to an unintended place in the 16th century, whisked away by Lachlan MacFarlane. They must travel for days to get back to Lachie's home. Turns out his mother was also a time traveler.
Katy has a gift for writing romantic suspense. This is the fourth of a six book series and can be read as a standalone, but I am reading the books sequentially. They each have some of the same characters that appear in the series. I love watching for the characters that I have read about previously to see how much they still are the same in some ways, but mature with age and responsibilities. Love prevails as time passes each book contains strong 21st century females who are brought together with their soulmate in the 16th century.
I do enjoy fantasy romance stories and this one, well this series fascinates me. I enjoy Irene's "help" even though the others don't want it, or so they say. The heroine, Maya, for on my nerves a bit, but considering how many times she was hurt in her life, I could understand but still. I loved Lachie. He's everything you would expect in a hero. Their romance was tender, yet full of flames. All in all, this was a charming book. One to revisit when need a good read for a day.
This was my first time traveling romance and can say that it didn’t disappoint. The characters will suck you into their lives and who they are. I loved the way the author wrote about the landscape and places . She made me feel like I was right beside the characters every step of the way. The joy the pain I was there threw it all. I would recommend this books to readers who are looking for true romance with a twist and laughter. Along the way threw this amazing book you will find that.
I loved this book! I had read some of the reviews so I was anticipating the worst, but it was the opposite! I read this one faster than the first 3 books, which I also liked very much. By now I know the author’s formula but it is still a great read & leaves the reader wanting more (not to mention wanting my very own 16th century Highland Warrior!). Highly recommend it!
The love story of Lachie and Maya? Lachie is give a chose to save Maya's life or go on as always? He chose to save her life, in doing so he brought her back in time and far from his home. Can he get her back to the future or will she find love and a family in the past? Great story
Another great story surrounding the Arch through Time series. From the first book to the most recents, have made this one of my very favorite series of books. I can't wait to read about Irenes fate on becoming GUARDIAN OF THE HIGHLANDS. If you like reading about Scottish time-travel then this is one series to start on.
Multiple villains in different times. A feisty self reliant heroine. A competent emotionally stable hero, saddled with a clan responsibility not of his choice. Lots of ups and downs and a nice look forward on Darcy and Quinn’ future. Lachie is charming and Maya is more then capable.
Always, I love these time travel stories and this series is one of the best! Exciting characters, in true plots, and of course, the HEA ending that melts your heart! Good read!
This was a wonderful time travel story. This is the first book of Kathy Baker I have read and and what a great writer she is. I look forward to adding her to my list of authors!😄😄😄😄😄
What a great book. I especially like how the characters from earlier books are woven into the current book. I really enjoy the series. And they seem to get better with every new book. I highly recommend this series.
I’m a sucker for time travel Scottish romance. This is another strong addition to this series. The characters are strong and easy to relate to. There are some returning characters from previous books, but it is not necessary to read the others first. I would recommend any of the books in this series.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one too, really good, readable series. Good story and characters, both good and bad. My only criticism is the need to find new ways to describe the end scenes. Otherwise, enjoy reading!
This could have been a good story of not for the swearing!!! Also parts of the story are just not likable! A cell phone that still has battery life for years with no way to charge jt??!?!?
Enjoyed reading this book and meeting the characters. Some editing needed but not enough to be terribly annoying. Have read two others in the series and will read some of the others.
But in this one there is definitely much more thrill and a lot more danger. How will they survive when both go into the future and then fall to the past
Modern lass meets Scottish highlander in this stand alone book within a series. I love how the fae bring them together but they must decide if they will give all for true love.
This book was thrilling. The ups and downs of Maya and Lachlan journey was driving me crazy. I do not know how to get my heart to stop pounding. Loved this Series so far.
