I have to be honest, this book was a lot. It took me some time to finish it. 1300 pages dealing with the life of Caterina de' Medici, the great granddaughter of Lorenzo "Il Magnifico". Born into the remnants of the once wealthiest and most influential familiy of bankers in Florence, Italy, she one day finds herself Queen of France. The story is set throughout the 16th century, beginning in first Italy and then later France.
People who like short chapters and quick storytelling should probably not read this at all. This book is lenghty. The number of pages already suggest so. Those who know me, know that I love wordy and long-winded stories and chapters. I will not believe a single thing happening in a book if it is dealt with in three sentences. A book about the history of a persons life and the politics of a kingdom needs to believably represent certain emotions and events and therefore has to be very detailed in its describtions.
Thanks to its lenght, you get to know the main character, Caterina, and her closest relatives very well. It amazed me how smooth the character's developement was portrayed. I found myself loving characters at first, partially throughout most of the book, only to find myself distancing me from them later. And vice versa, chatacters I thought I could never sympathize with, did grow on me in the end. I saw how much a single person can gain and lose in a lifetime and how tragically some stories go. Honestly, it was quite painful to read.
Anyway. If you find yourself interested in the history of France, the Medici or simply the politics in Europe in the 16th century, then you should probably give this book a try. Don't forget to bring perseverance. You will need it.
