How to be Glamorous on a Budget: A Modern Girl's Guide to looking her best without burning holes in her pocket.

Rate this book
What if I told you that you could be the best-dressed, most glamorous woman in any room, no matter what budget (or lack thereof) you have to work with?
Well beautiful girl, think of me as your fairy godmother because that is exactly why I set out to write this book! I know how to help you achieve exactly that.
Money can buy a lot of things, and yes it can help give you more options, but there are some things money can’t buy.
Money doesn’t buy happiness, it doesn’t make you smart, it doesn’t equate to class…..and it absolutely does not make you fashionable or beautiful.
In short; Money cannot buy you Glamour and style.
You can still achieve the wardrobe you see in magazines and on the runway without emptying your wallet. It is a great feeling to get a bargain when an item looks much richer than what the price tag indicates, and when you’re the envy of the room in an outfit you pieced together for a fraction of the cost of anyone else.
It is my mission, and my duty to share with you my tips, tricks and secrets on how to look glamorous on a budget.
And this is the place I’ll share all those secrets at. So arm yourself with a good cup of java, or glass of wine, and enjoy!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

So this was already a bit of a disappointment. When I requested it I thought this would be a stylish book filled with gorgeous photographs, illustrations, pretty colours, and more. Instead it is just a 50 page kindle book with tons of text, no layout or special effects. But we do have photographs (a few here and there), though yeah, on a kindle with only black/white function... that just doesn't work. Some of the photographs just had her fade in the background, or blinding you when she wore a white dress/white clothes. And also, if she says she is wearing x colour, yeah, that just doesn't translate when the pictures are black/white.

Also a shame was the fact that she mentions the body types, yet she is the only one on the pictures (or at least, from what I could gather looking at the photographs it seems to be the same person over and over again). So I just had a laugh. If you are discussing body types at least get the right girls to pose. Unless of course you have those 4 body types you mentioned, but I am sure that won't look too good.
It was also funny that she mentioned a stylist, in case you weren't sure about your body type . She then apparently realises this is a budget book, and just throws you to the internet (and then especially her site). :P
I laughed further when she told us she had a 40 dollar dress, but hey, the look was made expensive by her wearing Louboutins. Sure, like anyone normal can afford those. :P Doesn't this completely defeat the purpose of shopping on a budget? You buy cheap clothes, and then buy shoes with a price tag of over 500 dollar/euro?

I want to add that while the author says that washing your hair every day is OK (she also says washing every other day which is OK), but I wouldn't recommend every day. It really depends on various things, but generally it is not recommended to wash your hair every day (sources: various magazines, books, sites).
Also with split ends? It is not like you need to cut of a lot of hair, like how the author makes it seem.

Budget.. but in the mean time this girl wants you to have a hairstylist and someone who grooms your eyebrows (whut?).

I didn't really have much with those mom/baby parts, I did read them, but they weren't really that interesting to me.

Same goes for the diet stuff.

Something I also noticed, this book is pretty much like all those other fancy style/become fabulous books I have seen/read. It even follows the same pattern and even uses the same terms or tips, which is pretty hilarious if you think about it. Why not mix it up a bit?

So yeah, not really my book. I was hoping to find something new, something exciting, but instead I got the same stuff as many style books + there were just some things that didn't make sense considering this is a budget book. There were a few photographs, but again, that just doesn't work that well with a kindle. It is a short book, and that is also why I kept reading it. I sadly can't rate this one more than 1.5 stars. There were some tips that were nice, but nothing really new.

Given that this book was in the 'teens/YA' category, I assumed that the guide to looking glamorous on a budget would be written with young adults and teens in mind. First things first, this is definitely not written with any such age group in mind.

I found this a really disappointing read. The first thing that struck me was the section on dressing for your body types. Ordinarily, this is useful advice; however, the accompanying photos were of the same person (I assume to be the author) in every single body type. Now unless this woman has some kind of super-morphing body that can adapt to each of those body types, I don't see how it is any use for her to be featured in all of those photos.

The second thing that irked me, was the suggestion of getting a 'stylist'. Now if - hypothetically - I am looking to be glamorous on a budget and I am a teenager, I am not sure where the funds for this stylist are going to come from. Julia also suggested slamming up a cheap outfit with a pair of shoes. Great advice I'm sure... until the pair of shoes in question are a pair of Louboutins.

On the whole, I found a lot of this advice to be common sense. The book touched upon other things such as diet and makeup, with not enough advice in either section to actually be useful, and nothing in there that others wouldn't have heard before.

In short, I'm not exactly sure what this book offers to allow it to stand out from other such titles, and unfortunately this is not a book I would recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I am a bit confused by this book. Based on the title and description, I thought it would be a guide on how to dress on a budget. There are a few tips on that but it's mostly a lifestyle guide.
I'm also confused by the target audience. It's advertised as Teens and YA but has a chapter for mums and working women.

All in all it's a feel good read that feels very bloggish. Most advice is common sense, with a few aberrations (no, it's not recommended to wash your hair every day). The message itself is nice: stop making excuses and be YOUR best.

The addition of photos was a nice touch, although it was always the same lady (the author I assume). While they are nice photos, it ends up looking like a style book for this person. For example, when she models different types of dresses for different types of bodies, it would have been good to have photos of different women with the matching body type.

I did enjoy reading it. I think it would be good for these moments when you splurge on women's magazines to pass the time, like on holiday or when travelling.

What a stupid book. There. I said it. What a complete waste of time. Here are just a few reasons I think this:

1. The author show you different dresses to wear on different body types, however the only model wearing the dress is her. How are we supposed to see that Dress B looks good on a pear shape, or Dress C looks good on an apple shape when the model is the author, a skinny shape? Huh? Go grab some girlfriends with different body types and have them model those dresses. Did she write and photograph this book all in one day? 2. Wow, what a great idea! Let’s pair a $40 dress with some Louboutins! Genius! If anyone reading this book can afford Louboutins why would they worry about being glam on a budget?

3. She has chapters on fitness and cheat meals and tips for losing baby fat. If the title of the book were How to Look Good for Less then maybe I could see these chapters being relevant. BUT IT’S NOT! It’s How to be Glamorous on a Budget. Did anyone who picked up this book ask for fitness advice? I didn’t think so.

All-in-all I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at this book it was so bad. Why didn’t she hire an editor? Or at least a BFF who could read and give feedback. I was really looking forward to some cool makeup hacks and tips and ways to pair different outfits with one pair of shoes. You know, shortcuts. Looks like several of the other reviewers felt the same.

Thank you to Netgalley and Julia Goodman for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Very disappointed with this - I won't even call it a book, because you get a few headlines, a couple lines of text with each, and that's it. You're no further enlightened after finishing this, and might even be more confused. This reads like the first draft of a book on this topic - the 'big chapters' listed, a brief of 1-2 lines giving the gist of what said chapter should be (without giving any information!) ... but this was wrapped and put out as a book!
I didn't find any tip on how to be glam on a budget in here, and the killer, too, was the author (as in, the same woman!) demonstrating different body type dressing (she can't be all body types, sorry!), and those pictures, though well-taken, provided nothing that even jumped off in the sense of 'a picture is worth a thousand words'.

Lame

Self-love, self-absorbed, includes psychological advice devoid of knowledge or understanding. Okay book for anyone desiring a shallow, empty life. No.
