Philip Craig Russell was the first mainstream comic book creator to come out as openly gay. Since 1972 his work has won multiple Kirby, Harvey, and Eisner Awards, and Cartoon Crossroads Columbus presented him the Master Cartoonist Award in 2019.

The opera of Richard Strauss (based on Oscar Wilde's Salomé) is beautifully rendered in this tale of unrequited love taken past redemption of the soul - hauntingly rendered by Russell's artistic interpretation. Look up the works Russell has done on opera and classical mythology - you will be enchanted by his lavish interpretations.

read it when it came out, several times since. Russell was the first artist i ever collected.

This was fine. Based on the story from the Bible of the same name. The princess, Salome, falls for an imprisoned prophet. When he rejects her advances, she seeks revenge on him. There's a lot of unhealthy obsession here. Mainly through the eyes of three of the characters. And we see how each character lets that obsession take control in different ways. The art was great. Salome's many expressions are beautiful. We see nearly every emotion on her face to an intense degree. All in all I liked the book. Not a must have, but a decent one off read.
