I picked this up for free from a costume shop that was closing down and it’s not something I would ever purchase as I prefer more in-depth books on particular fashion periods. However I found this to be an interesting overview on the decades of fashion I am least familiar with: the 1960s and 1970s. The authors bias definitely showed though with the incredibly comprehensive 50s section that included write ups on lingerie and accessories that the other decades covered lacked, while the 60s and 70s seemed to have more general history than fashion info. I’m unsure why the 40s was included at all, as it was merely a single page! A lot of the advice for buying vintage is now outdated (as it was published in 2002), and as often is the case with books like these I found myself having to google images of garments that were described and not pictured. I did appreciate American (and few British) historical events being mentioned so the fashion movements were put in context, though the “you might find this in a thrift store for cheap!” at the end of a write up on designers like Dior got tiresome. I think this could be a good starting off point if you’re completely clueless on 50s-80s fashion designers and want a nicely presented summary? I think I’ll be keeping this book for now though as it’s currently the only fashion book in my collection that has any info on the 60s and 70s...
