In ROUNDING THIRD, an unheralded rookie catcher is inexplicably added to the roster of the Bay City Grays, perennial also-rans in the American League East. As the Grays struggle to achieve respectability, this enigmatic lad from lower Alabama suddenly begins contributing in totally unexpected ways. Who is this lad who has seemingly come out of nowhere? The novel, which picks up the narrative at the point where THE HEATER left off, also features Grays' players Ty Duffy, Jimmy Devlin, and Dean Lawler, who figured prominently in the previous adventure. Also like THE HEATER, the novel reflects an underlying subtext that is based upon a famous medieval literary theme. And indeed, once again the climax and denouement occur in dramatic fashion in a scenic locale in the west of Ireland.
