No brawler or bully had ever beaten the sturdy high school senior. Yet his karate instructor warns, "No matter how tough you are, there's always someone tougher." Jake has one compelling question, "Where in the world is this man?" He reckons to find him in this coming of age memoir. Jake embarks upon his quest, aided by his two best friends, me and Eddie Caretti.
Jake's search can only succeed by getting beaten as we encounter violence, mayhem and a police station. Eddie is short but bold and brazen. I'm wary and cautious, hoping to become a psychologist to understand my neurotic family. Tangling with a hired killer, Jake seeks advice. His guidance counselor claims he has delusions, but Jake swears he wouldn't dream of it. Trouble strikes at home when my alcoholic father is arrested. Plans for college crash as I fail classes, need food stamps for family groceries, and pursue love from the smart and sizeable Jennifer. She wisely evades me, but I'm appreciated when the only gay student in our school expresses sincere interest.
Push comes to punch in Jake's search and my face collects scars. The quest explodes and the meaning of manhood unfolds. I learn of loyalty and judgment and my father's words, "The place for a man to be tough is with other men, not with his family." Scroll up and check it out and read how to bump the wind!
There I was back in high school complete with the angst, the highs, and everything in between. For me, this book was like a coming of age time machine. I also loved being immersed again in my old home town of Buffalo. I had a grin on my face and my head nodding as I read those descriptions. The lucky ones among us had our own Uncle Ralph's. Looking back, they made such an impact! I loved this book and encourage everyone to read it and enjoy.
I never realized boys fought, or tried to fight so much ! Interesting read, characters you could definitely care about. I could actually envision almost all of them ! The portrayal of the parents I don't think was unusual for the times-we all can relate ! All in all a good read !
