Chronicles of Lunos #1

The Dark of the Moon

Rate this book
Centuries ago, dragons broke the old world and scattered the pieces across the oceans. On this new world of islands swathed in seas, sailors are kings, and the moon god holds dominion...

Selena Koren is the moon god’s most powerful Paladin; a skilled warrior and blessed with the most potent magic. She also bears the god’s terrible wrath. Ten years before, during the bloody Zak’reth War, Selena summoned the seas to destroy her enemy's armada. The Zak’reth screamed and drowned and died, but so too did four hundred innocents. In its fury, the god smote Selena with a terrible wound: a crescent-shaped hole in her chest that breathes its icy breath every moment of every day so that she never knows warmth.

Now, her temple sends Selena on a quest to kill two powerful dark priests. This alone, she is assured, will close her terrible wound. The thought of killing without provocation rattles her soul but Selena can suffer the cold no longer.

Bloody, bloody Bastian
Killed the captain…

Sebastian Vaas is the world’s deadliest assassin. Bards compose ballads of his depravity; children sing rhymes in the streets. His bloody vengeance against the Zak’reth who murdered his family is legendary. But Sebastian is done with bloodshed. For the gold, he takes one last job and is stricken to learn his mark is Selena, the same warrior who sent hundreds of Zak’reth to their graves. Now he must choose—to murder the woman who ended the war, or betray the dark forces who hired him.

You will take a voyage…

With another war looming on the horizon, Selena and Sebastian, along with a motley crew of mute sailors and criminals, demons and dragonmen, sail across Lunos; across oceans where maelstroms wrought of magic and pirates threaten at every turn, and where the seas hold secrets in their dark depths.

Old secrets thought to be as dead as the dragons who broke the world, but are coming back to life…

ARC provided to me by author E.S. Bell in exchange for an honest review.

“A fool’s first and biggest weakness is thinking he doesn’t have one”

This book was such an unexpected joy! I went into this expecting pirates from the cover, but I also was blessed with paladins, merfolk, dragons, demons, gods, and more! And if you guys have been following my reviews for any length of time, you probably know that my favorite settings in books will always be taverns (be still, my The Name of the Wind heart), and this book completely delivered me so many shanty pirate town taverns! I really enjoyed this book, and I completely loved this world! The world of Lumos is now made up of many different islands, and the people that reside on those islands worship different gods.

The Dark of the Moon stars an Aluren Paladin named Selena Koren, who is also a very rare summoner. Even though she is the second most gifted Paladin this world knows, because of her summoning and healing abilities, she is constantly reminded of a grave mistake she made, while using her powers against the warring Zak’reth, one night. Selena worships the Two-Faced God, who has given her a crescent moon shaped hole in her chest that always causes her constant cold. Even though she has given her life to her god, she was still punished for that one night and now lives and fights in a constant dark place of loneliness.

“It takes more strength and will to be kind than it does to indulge in anger or hate.”

Her only friend is a Vai’Ensai named Ilior, who is a one-winged dragon-like humanoid, who can never go back to his homeland, Cloud Isles, because of his unfortunate wound, too. Selena and Ilior have been friends for ten years, and their friendship gives Selena the hope and strength to go on, but she is always hoping for a way to make her god heal her chest wound, so that she can know what warmth feels like again.

Selena gets an opportunity, in the form a very dangerous mission, to finally heal the hole that has made her feel empty for so long. Her mission is to kill two dark priests, who have risen in the Bazira faith. She is even told that she probably won’t survive this task, but nothing will keep her from healing her wound. All she needs is a pirate who will take her to the dark priests.

Sebastian Vass is a pirate who holds his secrets very close to his chest. So close, that his entire crew is unable to speak! Most of them not having tongues. Sebastian has been running away from a past that hunts him, when his family was brutally tortured and murdered. This dark event has turned him into one of the most deadly assassins this world knows, yet he is looking for one last job so that he can retire forever. And luckily for him, Bazira has recruited him to bring back the head of an Aluren Paladin named Selena.

“It only takes two acts of real fucking depravity to make a reputation.” Sebastian counted off on his thumb and forefinger. “The first to get everyone’s attention and the second to show you were serious the first time.”

These two character’s storylines quickly mingle, and secrets, betrayals, and mystery ensue! This book is one magical plot twist after magical plot twist, and I loved it completely.

Trigger warnings for graphic violence, torture, assault, attempted rape, and mention of rape.

E.S. Bell is a pen name of romance writer Emma Scott, and the romance bleeds into this fantasy story so very well. I was so impressed with this debut fantasy take, because it reads like perfection.

The only reason I’m giving this four stars is because the first couple chapters are a little slow, and you get a lot of information thrown at you very quickly. After that initial bump though, this story becomes an immersive and absolutely addictive read. I couldn’t put this down, and I need the next installment immediately.

It’s been so long since I’ve read a story that surrounded a paladin! Paladins are very close to my heart, thanks to World of Warcraft. I love how they are holy warriors, always trying to do what is right and lawful, yet still capable of retribution! I seriously am beyond words with happiness that this story is about a paladin, and I couldn’t not mention my joy in this review.

This book was amazing! The prose is lyrical, the settings are absolutely fantastic, the characters completely stole my heart, and the mystery of these gods had me completely enthralled. If you’re looking for a story filled with pirates, mythical creatures, wrath of gods, intrigue, and mystery, please pick up The Dark of the Moon. I think this series is going to be absolutely everything I look for in adult fantasy, and I can’t wait to read more!

The Dark of the Moon isn't a book you speed through, it's one you savour as missing something could impact everything.. And my review will be fairly vague because it's one of those where if I slip up, it could ruin the whole reading experience.

description

I won't deny, I spent the first 25% confused as there's so much to take on board: the plot is intricate and we have multiple POV's, although it's predominately the main protagonists, Serena and Sebastian at the helm. But everything is described in such detail, you're picked up and transported into the midst of their world, so even though you're wrapping your head around everything and everyone from dragonmen to undead mermaids, you're immersed as you do so.

"He will bleed for you. He will die for you."

This is a fairly hefty book and had I not been reviewing I'd have read it over weeks as opposed to days simply as there's so much to take in and perspectives. But once I passed that 25% point, things started to fall into place that bit more, it picked up momentum and I certainly couldn't have predicted the path the story would take—some of which left me conflicted in feeling which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. With an vast array of characters bringing that conflict and additional depth to the story, E.S Bell has crafted a captivating opener to her Chronicles of Lunos series.

6 Paladin stars!

Warning: fangirling ahead of you. Read at your own risk :-D

Some weeks ago Emma Scott dropped a bomb on her FB page: she wrote fantasy under another pen name!

As:

I love Emma Scott’s writing;
I love fantasy;
Said blurb mentioned pirates, Paladin, magic and other fantastical creatures;
I must have drooled on the cover and had to clean my screen afterwards

I NEEDED this book!

Now my own risk was of course disappointment as I had very high expectations….BUT I’m very, very, very happy to shout that it surpassed everything!

The plot was excellent filled with twists and turns, dangers, magic and a quest! I love quests. I love following the main character and looking after either an object, people or … Will they succeed or not? How? Avoiding many death traps?

Selena Koren is a Paladin and a Summoner. She is a rarity among her people the Aluren (adherents of the Shinning face) as they haven’t seen a Summoner in a thousand years. She can call the sea and use it as a weapon.

Cool you say? Yes and no. The last time she used the sea’s power she drowned the enemy but killed hundreds of innocents as she did not master her strength. Her god was angry. Very angry. He marked her with a moon crescent in her chest.

That should be cool, a new tattoo, right?

Well no as said moon is just a gaping hole in her breast. You’ve read it right She HAS A HOLE IN HER CHEST. Like a dark hole you can put your hand, arm, etc. into and it’s swallowed!!! Once you take it back your hand will be frozen. Even more: Selena is cold all the time. Freezing. Even in Death valley she would not sweat a drop and be frozen. To sum it up: for ten years Selena Koren, formidable Paladin has never known heat.

She is shunned by her own people, called The Tainted One. She tried to heal as many people as she could as she also is an incredibly gifted healer but to no avail.

Nothing can change her people’s mind and nothing can assuage her guilt at having killed innocents.

Until… a message comes to her Island asking Selena to kill two powerful Baziras (adherent of the Shadow face), her people’s enemies. If she kills them she will be cured.

Selena will be forced to accept this dangerous mission and that’s where the quest begins. Finding these Baziras and killing them.

Of course it’s much more thrilling than what I summed up in two words, because:

the seas are filled with dangerous creatures and new ones have been created. They are HUNGRY! Expect epic battles and last resort moves to save Selena or her friends. Just hold fast to your seat and don’t forget to breathe you should be in the clear;

obstacles will divert Selena’s ship and she will nearly freeze her behind off in some icy island;

an enemy is lurking in the corner. He has the face of a very alluring and roguish captain but he is not who you think. Julian is Bloody Bastian or Sebastian Vaas. Feared assassin and hired killer to exterminate Selena after she’s killed one of the Bazira’s.

said Bazira to kill will not be who Selena expected to be and there will be interesting lessons and shocking truths to learn.

It’s now established that I loved the plot but I’m also in awe with the building of the universe filled with many creatures: Vai’Ensai (dragon men), Sirrak (shape-shifting creature from the Void, blood demons), Merkind, Dragons (extinct), Djinn… This world has its own gods with the Two-Faced God. The moon is “the avatar of the god and has two aspects: The Shining face and The Shadow face”.

See any topic here? Light versus Dark? Good vs Evil? Well yes and there is a big lesson too: you need balance in life. Good can’t exist without evil, light can’t exist without darkness.

I’m also impressed with E.S. Bell’s imagination as she created this whole vernacular and names for these fantastical creatures. That’s what I love reading fantasy!

Last but not least: the characters and their journey. Selena Koren is beautiful, kind, gifted, strong and cursed. How she wasn’t bitter and resentful at what happened to her I can’t fathom! She chose to stay in the light and not be swallowed by darkness. As she said: . She is also tired to be cold and alone all the time. My heart ached at this injustice! She could heal everyone but her. “What a crock” said Sabastian. She is badass! The kind of heroine I love to read about.

Of course there is a love story. Or the begin of one. Or… not saying more.

Just know that Aluren are forbidden to love outside their “pool” and that captain Julian/Bastian is a handsome if disillusioned man. What happens when a dark hero meets a luminous heroine? Well let’s say they were attracted like Yin is attracted to Yan. Bastian is a conflicted hero. All in tones of grey with a bloody past. One I want to get his redemption through Selena’s love.

Side characters and friends are all adding layers to the story. Connor’s story has only been hinted at and I forecast a very interesting fate in book two. Skye is always in people’s minds and seems to commend their fates from afar like a master puppeteer. Here too I predict a greater role in the second installment. Some side characters will die, some will be sacrificed some… because this is genius fantasy!

I’m stopping here or I would write an essay about this story and all the messages she conveys too.

Just know that I found it bloody brilliant, that I recommend it a thousand times and the only thing I regret is… there is a second book coming (I do hope so) that has no publication date yet!

Emma Scott is extremely talented as contemporary writer and E.S. Bell is genius as fantasy storyteller!

4 - Find the light... or die... Stars!

If you have read this authors other work under her other name (Emma Scott) you will know that you are guaranteed a well written and emotive story. The Dark of the Moon took it to a whole other level though.

This is 100% one of those books where you cannot say a whole lot about the story for fear of giving away massive spoilers. There are a lot of pages, filled with a lot of beautiful words, you get to meet a lot of characters, and the story is told through a lot of different POVs.

I was a Summoner. Not for a thousand years had there been one such as me...

There are several plots playing out around the main story which is told by Paladin Selema Koren, who for all her worldly knowledge came across as vulnerable and a little naive at points, but you can attribute that to how she has spent the last ten years of her life.

"She’s been lied to by everyone around her since the beginning..."

The building relationship between her and Assassin-for-Hire Sebastian Vaas is definitely more of a secondary point to the rest of the story playing out.

"War makes interesting bedfellows..."

As I said this isn't a short book, its one to be savored like good chocolate, and sipped slowly like fine wine, you also need to be prepared, the story for me was a little confusing at the beginning, I think mainly because of the wealth of information being introduced, but once I got through the first 10-15% things started to become clear and I just got absorbed in the story.

"That’s how it goes... Something bad for something good... There’s always a price to be paid."

There are questions asked, answered and new ones raised as the story progresses, I think you can say at the end we are left with a HFN rather than a HEA, I shed a few tears at certain points, and the author certainly didn’t hold back when it came to her imagination and the world that she has created.

The Dark of the Moon is definitely just the beginning of that tale, and if the author carries on the story with the same level of skill as she did with this book, I can see it ending up on my book shelf right next to The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

"Beware for the dark will try to swallow you, consume you, to make you something like itself..."

I'm not I wasn't a fantasy reader. I am was strictly CR. But when Emma Scott decides to jump genres for a little while, you jump with her.

And now I'm nursing one of the biggest book hangovers I've EVER had. I was am completely captivated by Lunos and the characters who inhabit it. I cannot let them go. I have yet to pick up another book; I've just been re-reading my favorite parts in this one. And I have a gazillion favorite parts.

TDOTM is epic in every sense of the word. And there's a lot to it. Skim the map and glossary before you begin, but don't try to remember everything right away like I did (at one point I had a spreadsheet, but in my defense, it was before I realized there was a glossary 🙄). Just take the ride and before you know it everything will fall into place. It's not a romance, but it has just enough romance in it to appease the romantic in me. It also has enough to . Thanks for that, BTW.

Like a complete and utter moron, I waited to read this. I'm superstitious (for lack of a better word) about reading third person POV (or past tense for that matter) when I'm writing in first/present. I'm convinced it gives me writer's block. But I couldn't stand it, so I caved. Did it give me writer's block? Probably. Do I care? Nope.

ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve been trying to write this review for nearly a month and the problem I’m having is that I don’t really know how to express how much I loved it.

I adored this book. Adored. It was pretty much perfect and if the rest of the series is any where near as good, I will have gained another favourite series!

I don't want to explain the plot because it's so lush and rich I couldn't do it justice. What you really need to know is it is a beautifully written, that characters are fantastic and the world building is on point!

It’s very rare that I have a firm favourite character. I normally have one or two that I love but this time, even though all the characters were brilliant, Sebastian is my favourite. 😮 can it be? Did she actually just say she has an actual favourite character? Yes people, I did. And here’s why: (to paraphrase one of my own updates) he’s a morally ambiguous assassin with a dream and a heartbreaking backstory. He’s terrifyingly good at what he does but he doesn’t want to do it anymore. He’s ridden the waves of anger and now that the initial tidal wave has retreated to a moderately rough sea, he wants out.

The relationship between Sebastian and Selena is great and I especially adore that Selena is a powerful, strong character in her own right. Softer than Sebastian but with the ability to obliterate islands...what a heroine!

I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to give too much away and I desperately want people to read this! But all I will say is this: one of my favourite things about their relationship was that when the shit hit the fan, Selena didn’t shrug it off and allow her feelings to override her judgement. She stayed strong and firm and I love her for that. Sebastian betrayed her and she shouldn’t just roll over and accept it. I want them to end up together but it would have felt wrong for it to happen by the end of this book.

I cannot wait for the next one.

OMG!!!! Is this book for real!? While paranormal/fantasy is not my normal genre, I have to say I am blown away by this phenomenal book. I am in awe of E.S. Bell’s beautifully written words and her fascinating, imaginative mind. This author surprised us all with a very unique story compared to what she has written in the past. It’s bold and beautiful. I admit I had a difficult time keeping up and remembering all the terms. I am blaming that solely on English as my second language though :). Some of the vocabulary is hard for me to grasp, but I think the fantasy world has its own vernacular that you have to learn. Fortunately, the author provided a comprehensive glossary at the end of the book and that really saved my life. How did I know it’s at the end? I usually scan the book at the beginning and the end, and then go through it slowly :0 Don’t judge :) I also want to point out that the story is long with many characters so you need to really pay attention to all of them and their roles.

The storyline is obviously very fascinating and unique. The heroine Selena is a skilled warrior who is gifted with a special magic. A decade before, during a war, Selena summoned the seas to destroy her enemy but unfortunately hundreds of innocent people died. As a result of that, Selena was left with a crescent-shaped hole in her chest which breathes icy breaths. Now, Selena is given an opportunity to heal her wound in exchange for killing two priests. She is not sure she can kill without being provoked. Will Selena go through with the mission given her past actions that resulted in so much pain and suffering? The hero, Sebastian is a merciless assassin. His life’s mission is revenge against the Zak’reth who murdered his family. Sebastian takes one last job but he finds out his target is Selena, the same warrior who killed hundreds of Zak’reth which ended the war. What must he do? Murder Selena or betray the dark forces who hired him?
The characters in this book are all complex and interesting. Sebastian seems dark, cold and dangerous but there is more to him than what meets the eye. When Sebastian’s family died part of him died right along with them. All his life Sebastian wants blood revenge but he is tired of it all. When Sebastian met Selena, he was intrigued by her kindness and courage. Selena is kindhearted, compassionate and so easy to love. During the journey to fulfill their missions they fell in love, but it’s complicated and plagued with, lies, deceit, and drama all around them. As I mentioned the story is unique, complex, and nothing is quite as it seems. You have to use your imagination and get lost in this fantasy world. There is a lot going on – war, criminals, pirates, secrets and the vast ocean surround. Half the time you will be on the edge of your seat anticipating what will happen next. If you enjoy magic, mystery, fantasy worlds action packed with twists and turns, strong heroes and heroines – this book is definitely for you. I find the story quite thrilling – it will hook and reel you in. I urge you to get a glass of wine, sit back, relax and enjoy.
My husband is finally reading one of my favorite books and IT'S THIS ONE!!! He loves fantasy.

Bon Voyage everyone!!!

PS: A movie on the horizon perhaps? Kind of reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean :)

I received a copy of The Dark of the Moon to read and review in advance of its release. I have to be in the mood to be swept up in a fantasy/paranormal type story, it isn't my go-to type of read, so when The Dark of the Moon was offered, I did stop and consider for about half a second before I jumped in with both feet.

The author is familiar to me, I'm not outing their identity here, others may, but that isn't my place. They chose a pen name for a reason on this novel, so I'll stick with that... and say that E.S. Bell definitely has a knack for the fantasy genre. The beginning of the book was a bit heavy to digest, just because of the content and world building that is required for all books of this nature. Also, I feel it important to point out... There *is* a glossary, use it, if you're like me and a bit green on some of the terminology the author uses... I felt smarter after reading this book, that's for sure!

Now, about the book! I don't do spoilers, you know that. But, I can tell you that I felt I was there... on a ship in the middle of the ocean... or in the jungle. Those scorpions. *shiver* Speaking of shivering. Selena. Sebastian. The characterizations were on pointe. Multidimensional, all the facets, the different layers that were exposed and hinted at in the most subtle of nuances, were nothing short of brilliant. You'll be treated to multiple points of view... which sometimes can be confusing, but in this story, it really works; if for nothing else, than it gets you into their headspace, so you can see where their hangups truly are... and trust me, every one of them has some.

This was a great read for me. I look forward to next installment in the Chronicles of Lunos series and appreciate the author sending me an ecopy in advance of the book's release for review. 4.25 'Hear and be Heard' Stars!

OMG!!! This was one of the most amazing and mind-blowing reading experiences I've ever made. My heart and mind are still caught within the pages of this epic book because I can't let this story and the characters go. I refuse it! I want them back and need the next book in this saga like my next breath!

I love the fantasy genre and the way it challenges my imagination. And let me tell you that this book was fantasy at it's best! The Dark of the Moon (Book I in the Chronicles of Lunos saga) took me on a journey I'll never be able to forget. The excellent writing and plotting was otherwordly! I'm in awe of E.S. Bell. Only a super talented mastermind could put such a story together. The world of Lunos with it's different islands, folks and gods was fascinating beyond words. I could literally see all these places and characters right before my eyes. I loved the magic and mystical creatures and the fact that the hero of this story was a woman! I sincerely hope that this book is going to be made into a movie.

If I had to tell you what to expect, I would tell you to expect the unexpected. A lot of things are not how they seem at first sight. There are a lot of lies and deception. Sometimes you won't be able to tell right from wrong and other times you won't be sure who the real friend or foe is.

Selena Koren is the moon god’s most powerful Paladin: a skilled warrior proficient in swordcraft and blessed with the most potent magic and ability to heal. Ten years before, during the bloody Zak’reth War, Selena summoned the seas to destroy her enemy's armada. She succeded but killed four hundred innocents in the process. In its fury, the god marked Selena with a terrible wound: a crescent-shaped hole in her chest that breathes its icy breath every moment of every day so that she never knows warmth again.

The Moon Temple sends Selena on a quest to kill two powerful dark Bazira priests with the promise that it will close her terrible wound. The thought of killing without provocation troubles Selena but she can't suffer the cold any longer.

Sebastian Vaas is the world’s deadliest and well known assassin. His bloody vengeance against the Zak’reth who murdered his family and raped his sister is legendary. But Sebastian is done with the bloodshed. He takes one last job for a huge sum of gold and is suprised to learn that his mark is Selena, the same warrior who sent hundreds of Zak’reth to their graves. Now he must choose to either murder the woman who ended the war, or betray the dark forces who hired him.

With another war looming on the horizon, Selena and Sebastian, along with a crew of mute sailors, demons and dragonmen, sail across Lunos where the oceans are full of scary magical creatures and dangerous pirates at every turn.

Old secrets thought to be as dead as the dragons who broke the world will come to life, making Selena and her crew question everything they thought they knew...

I won't give you more information about the plot than the blurb reveals but be assured that this crew's journey is a long and scary one. They will face danger beyond your imagination! Things will be revealed that will leave you with your jaw on the floor. I sure as hell was suprised!

Selena was a heroine with the purest heart. She wasn't only physically strong but mentally too. She is carrying the wound for 10 years, making her feel alone despite having her loyal dragonman Ilior by her side. Selena is compassionate, caring and so brave! I loved and admired her for her strength and kindness.

Sebastian was a very complex character. He is an ice-cold assassin, a skillful killer without remorse...or so I thought. There is so much more to him though than meets the eye. There is goodness inside him that is very well hidden behind his reserved persona. Give him a chance and you will descover that this young man is more worth than only your sympathy!

I can say without a doubt that The Dark of the Moon is going straight on the very top of my favorite books shelf as a new favorite of mine! 5+++ stars for E.S. Bell.

Fantasy novels have been my guilty pleasure since I was a teenager and I'm still a huge fan of this genre. I love how these books allow me to escape reality and immerse myself in the unique world the author has created. It's amazing how E.S. Bell's captivating writing has created a picturesque setting for this epic saga. I could see it in front of my eyes: various places, some dark and dangerous while others beautiful and mesmerizing and mysterious creatures whose appearance equally fascinated and frightened me. Put magic into the mix and a tragic, forbidden love story and I'm immediately sold. This fantastic book is going to consume your every waking thought until you've reached the last page, trust me. E.S. Bell will take you on an unforgettable journey full of dangers and trials you soon won't forget.

Selena Koren is the moon god’s most powerful Paladin. She is a fierce warrior blessed with the most potent magic among her kind. Ten years ago, during the Zak’reth war, Selena summoned the seas to destroy her enemy's armada. They all died but so too did 400 innocent people. Selena is ever since wearing her god's curse on her chest - a crescent-shaped hole that breathes its icy breath. Now her temple sends Selena on a quest to kill two powerful Bazira priests assuring her that this will close her wound. Killing without provocation is against her morals but Selena can suffer the cold no more ...

Sebastian Vaas is the world’s deadliest assassin. Ballads are composed about his depravity and sang on the streets and in taverns by children and adults alike. Everybody is afraid of him. His merciless revenge against the vicious Zak’reth who murdered his family earned him the nickname Bloody Bastian. But Sebastian is done with it all. He takes one last job for a great payment and is shocked to learn that his mark is Selena, the same warrior who sent hundreds of Zak’reth to their graves. Now he must choose - murder the woman who ended the war or betray the dark forces who hired him ...

Sebastian will find himself drawn to the kind-hearted, compassionate and brave warrior. With every minute spent by her side he will find it more and more difficult to stick to his plan. Selena will soon realise that there is so much more to the handsome and standoffish captain of the Black Storm than meets the eye. He is not only bold and fearless but also protective when it comes to his beloved crew and ship. Sebastian thinks that his morals and heart died along his family during the war. He has no purpose in life whatsoever until he meets Selena and realises that this woman's love and trust could help him redeem himself and find absolution.

This story is told in different POVs but mainly from Selena and Sebastian's. I loved this very much since it allowed me to get into the head of the narrator. Like in most fantasy stories there are lots of characters to get acquinted with. Some of them you're going to adore with all your heart and the others you're going to hate with the passion of a thousand suns. Needless to say that my favorites have been Selena and Sebastian but I also fancied Connor, Whistle and Ilior. I was disgusted by Bacchus and sick of Skye.

This was a breathtaking first installment in the Chronicles of Lunos saga with many smart twists and turns that will make your jaw drop in shock. It's truly an inspiring and thought-provoking story about faith, love, forgiveness and redemption. It's going to blow your mind, mark my words. Grab this amazing book and let this author's magic put you under her spell. E.S. Bell - I bow to your incredible talent! This gem goes straight to my favorites of 2017 shelf. 5+++ stars!

I was so excited when I heard that one of my favorite authors was writing one of my favorite genres. The Dark of the Moon did not disappoint. From the very first scene, I was hooked and putting it down was TORTURE. I was transported to a different world, immersed in a story that was unexpected and rich. I'll write a full review when I'm able to do it justice. But definitely one of my top reads of the year and I HIGHLY recommend it!

Ahoy there me mateys! I received this fantasy eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. So here be me honest musings . . .

Arrrrrr mateys! Ships, magic, islands, assassins, dragon-kind, merfolk, gods, and so much more. Of course the cover drew me in but the main idea in this book is what tickled me fancy.

A woman named Selena possesses magic in exchange for service to the Two-Faced God. Ten years prior to this story, Selena used her magic to destroy a naval army. Only she lost control and killed the hundreds of innocents she was meant to save. In retribution, the god marked her breast with an icy hole in the shape of a crescent moon. The wound does not heal and Selena has never been warm since her mistake. These ten years later, an order has come that may lead to her redemption. She swore she would never kill again. But will she if it means she might be warm at last?

So Selena was an excellent character. I loved following her journey. She does appear a bit naive at times but I chalked it up to being raised in a temple and the ramifications of that. Her magic is awesome. She can summon the sea and heal and such. But because of her grievous mistake, she is wary of using her own power and it causes extreme internal conflict. Her wound is creepy and otherworldly. It is a void that she can put her hand into up to the elbow! Cool and gross!

The other characters are also extremely fun and multi-faceted. There is the assassin, Sebastian Vass, who has taken one final job to get out of the business altogether. Snarky, intelligent, and ruthless. There is Selena's companion, Ilior, who is a dragon-like creature and her best friend and self-appointed protector. Caring, stoic, and faithful. There are bad folks who have actual reasons for being evil and other folks that I remain ambivalent about in the best ways possible. Best of all, these characters change and grow as the plot progresses!

The world-building was lovely too. I loved the island world and its reasons for existing. I would certainly find adventure sailing in those waters. Some more dangerous than others. The religion of the world was very interesting. The ramifications are only hinted at in this book but what ideas were there were thought-provoking, and to me mind, fun.

The only downsides for me were the somewhat uneven pacing and the romance. The book is over 500 pages and there was a little too much filler for me taste. Mostly at the beginning. That said, the majority of the book kept me avidly flipping pages. Also I would find meself thinking of the characters when I put the book down and would be excited to pick it up again. So a minor grumble.

The romance itself was overall fine and it certainly isn't all perfect rosy goodness all the time. But I found meself wanting them to get over the angst. Of course then I got a sex scene that just seemed out of place. Again minor quibble. I was glad when the deed was done.

I very much enjoyed the voyage and certainly want to read the next book which I believe comes out in 2018. Arrrrr!

So lastly . . .

Thank you Trillian!

Side note: I couldn't find the e-book version on sale. But being as I read an e-book it's likely out there somewhere.

Loved it! A torturous wound, an impossible mission, a forbidden love and a terrible betrayal.

Even though quite heavy on the world building in the beginning, I’m so glad that I kept on reading. It was unputdownable once I became involved in the magnetic characters and their incredible story.

The Dark of the Moon is an actioned packed fantasy adventure involving Selena, a powerful paladin, who is sent on an impossible mission to assassinate two dark priests. Sebastian Vaas is the world’s most deadly assassin. He is sick of the bloodshed and takes on one last job – to assassinate Selena.

I fell in love with the characters – Selena is a strong, compassionate and brave heroine,
I think it’s a great pity when a man has seen so much darkness that he can no longer tell the difference between fool’s fire and the dawn.

Sebastian is smart-mouthed, handsome and dangerous.
It only takes two acts of real f…g depravity to make a reputation. The first to get everyone’s attention and the second to show you were serious the first time.

The secondary characters were just as intriguing, with Accora and Ilior being my favourites.

Accora will stop at nothing to exact her revenge.
I want to see it happen. I want to watch his rotted soul slip from his body like vapour, dissipating until there’s nothing left but a carcass to burn.

I don’t need your trust, girl. I need your sword. Your magic. Your powers. And you need me if your wound is to close. There is no trust, there is necessity.

Ilior is Selena’s best friend and protector.
He was the rock she set her back to, unmovable and unyielding in his devotion as a mountain is unyielding to the elements. He was always there for her, beside her, dedicating his life to her instead of pursuing one of his own. He was willing to die for her, never asking for anything for himself beyond her safety.

The Dark of the Moon is beautifully written, refreshing and original, teaming with unforgettable, diverse characters woven in an intricate, spell-binding plot.

Perfect for those who love fantasy, tales of friendship and adventure, and stories that grab you and suck you in until the very end

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Stars clarification: 4.5 Stars

After the first third of this book, I was not quite so sure if I'm going to like it. Just to be honest. It was not easy for me to adjust but somehow, without realizing it, I was in midst of the story around half time, I felt almost part of the crew. By the end of the book I was so attached to each crew member that I felt lost, when I finished the last chapter.

E.S. Belle did a great job creating the world the story takes place in. She took her time and described all so well, that I could almost really see it. In addition to that, this book shows a very well plotted character development of all main characters. Because of the steady view change you are able to get to know the links among each other, get to know the past of each in a way that makes their action and decisions more transparent. Further more it makes it possible for you to also see the story from different angles.

Selena with her pure heart is easy to love and fall for. She is brave and strong and I really like the way she is dealing with the lies she uncovers during her journey to fulfill her task she took so blindly by trusting her faith.
Sebastian is a little more complex and dark because of his past. He's still looking for his place in the world and it seems he found it but fate has other plans.
I hope to hear a lot more of some other "side" characters in the next book, as they caught my interest right away and IMO they all have an interesting story to tell on their own.

The Dark Of The Moon contains a lot of lies and trickery. Sometimes you won't be able to tell what is right and what wrong. Suddenly you don't know anymore who is your friend and who your enemy. It's pretty twisted and even at the end you are not much wiser.
This in combination with the slow but steady suspense-packed story line is what keeps your eyes glued to the pages. Once it caught me I could not stop and I was swallowed by it completely. Honestly I can't wait to lay hands on the second book as I am most curious how this will go on!

First I was not sure how to rate this book. 5 stars are possible but I noted that there is room for more. So I'd go for 4.5 stars and yet still rate it with 4 stars.

What do you do when an author you know for her emotional, romantic stories reveals she wrote a story under a penname in a totally different genre? You want to read it of course! Well, that’s what I do. The Dark of the Moon is the first book in the ‘Chronicles of Lunos Series’ by E.S. Bell and introduces the reader to the world of Lunos and its inhabitants. I love this book and can’t wait to find out what happens next.
“Whatever they ask of me, I won’t Summon. Never again. The price is too high.”

Selena Koren is the main character of The Dark of the Moon, and most of the story is told from her point of view. As a Paladin Selena has devoted her life to the Two-Faced God, and she serves it by healing the people on the various islands. During the last war against the Zak’reth Selena did as she was told, but it resulted in her being punished by the God and to this day she’s paying a heavy price. All she wants is her punishment is to be over, even if it means making a deal she doesn’t want to make.
“Blackness. A black crescent moon, stark on her pale skin. Not the black of a tattoo or bruise, the blackness of a shadow, a starless patch of night sky. Blackness that had depth. That breathed.”

The Dark of the Moon is not just the story of Selena finding her redemption. Yes, she and her quest are a major part, but I’ve enjoyed reading about Lunos and its rich history. Throughout the story the reader learns more about the different islands and different inhabitants, but it never feels like the author is teaching a history lesson, it all comes naturally. I know the author normally writes romantic stories, but this book is very different. There is a bit of romance, but that’s not what this story is about.

Besides reading romance books, I love watching tv-shows like Game of Thrones and movies like Lord of the Rings. I get the same feeling from The Dark of the Moon; a multi-layered story with characters who all have their own agenda, paranormal events and an outcome unknown. Well, I know what I want for Selena; getting her life back. I feel so sorry for her, I understand she did something horrible, but she doesn’t deserve the wrath of the Two-Faced God.
“Death would be a relief, she though idly. If I survive, that pain…it will be there. Waiting for me. This is the end.”

I love The Dark of the Moon, I give it 5 stars.

I don't trust books that don't have many reviews below four stars...because how is that possible? No honest book is ever universally loved, and not all honest book reviewers will adore the same book due to personal preference. The fact that this book was glowing with rave reviews should have been a sign.

THE GOOD
1) Complex. Lots going on to the story with varying layers of twists and points of view.

2) Thought out enough to be taken seriously.

3) Illior and Selena are terrific. Sebastian was set up well to establish his character.

THE BAD
1) Book chemistry fail. I don't like pirates or ships and pirates on ships. And was that a dragon that got in here...?! 😡

2) About the 40% mark is where I gave up and started skimming. I couldn't connect with any of the characters on a personal level enough to care about what happens to their external and internal motivations throughout the story.

3) A bit too dense for me, perhaps? Because what ever was the reason behind Connor and Kyre? A lot of focus for that to go nowhere. And Neven's secret? And so what's up between Illior and Selena? And minor characters who are repeatedly named and given roles...only to not feature prominently? Maybe that all went over my head.

THE VERDICT
Meh. Good adult fantasy, adventure and violence, plot twists. It all just lacked the amount of action and suspense and urgency and romance that I wanted.

*I received a free ARC copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Rating ~4.5?

A truly promising tale of magic, love, understanding, and betrayal. And of course, a tale of second chances.

Selena is an outcast. Celestine and the Temple treat her like the plague. Because she is a reminder of their God's wrath, it is a reminder that they were wrong. People hate being forced to see the ugly truth of their actions.

E.S. Bell has done something that very few have been able to do for me. Anything romance is my genre or choosing. Not since the days of JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Stephenie Meyer, and Veronica Roth have I been so engrossed in a book of this genre. Without a doubt one of my favorites!!

I was hesitant to read this because really I was just too much in my own head. But, I'm familiar with the author. I love her writing and get sucked into anything she writes. And again I was not disappointed in the least! This book is long and I read it in four days, with a full time job. I'd be working and thinking and Selena and Sebastian, wondering what the story was with Ilior, hoping Selena got the answers she wanted, waiting to see if Accora would stay true to her word. Basically I've been consumed by this book. I've been binge watching One Tree Hill for the last month and even put that on hold. It could totally wait!! I don't want to go much deeper into the story then what I just mentioned because you'll want to discover every part for yourself! But just know, when you pick this book up? You're in for the adventure of a life time! One I'm ready to go on again. I adore these characters and can't wait for more!

That being said, I've also learned it's ok to go out of your comfort zone when reading. You are more than likely going to be rewarded handsomely. Just like I was! ❤️

Right from the start this book totally had me hooked! The multiple POV, the action, the gore, the lore, the fantasy elements, the writing. It was all amazing, no idea why it took me this long to finally pick this book up! Thank gosh I did it, can't wait for #2! I need to know what happens to all of these amazingly-fleshed out characters, will Connor and Serena meet? What's the deal with Skye? The Bazira? Her powers? I need answers!

5 fantastic stars!

The Dark of the Moon is fantasy at its best. Full of excitement, magic, mystery, and suspense, it’s an addictive read that draws you in and won't let you go. It’s a fight between good and evil, light and dark, and one that I can’t get enough of!

Selena Koren is an Aluren warrior with the ability to heal and has the power to Summon the water around her. She is able to Hear and be Heard by the god she follows and is known for being one of the strongest of her kind. After a Summoning goes terribly wrong, she is cursed with the mark of the Two-Faced god in the form of a blistering cold crescent-shaped wound over her heart. Now, though she can still heal and use her abilities, she is unable to heal herself from the wound that keeps her perpetually cold. For ten years she has worn the mark and it slowly weakens her. Wanting nothing more than to become whole once again and finally feel warmth after so long, she sets off on a quest she is assured will end the curse.
“Your destination is dark and thick with danger. You are like a light in that darkness, driving it back as the Shining face of your god does when the moon is full. But beware for the dark will try to swallow you, consume you, to make you something like itself.”

Sebastian Vaas is an assassin, the most lethal in the world. He's ruthless and brutal, feared by all, but he wants out of his gruesome lifestyle. When he finds himself facing one last job, whether or not he goes through with the hit once his mark is revealed will change the course of his life and those around him.

The Dark of the Moon, the first book in the Chronicles of Lunos saga, takes you on an exciting adventure where nothing is as it seems. Full of gods, pirates, monsters and other mystical beings, it's a difficult journey with many dangers - both expected and hidden -  lurking on land and in the sea. There are lies, secrets, and betrayals that make the voyage even more challenging and twists that take everyone one by surprise, even the reader.

The writing is brilliant, keeping you fully engaged and invested in the well-developed story. The vivid imagery transports you to the magical world seen through the character’s eyes. You live it and breath it. The multi-layered plot and the wonderfully complex characters are so incredible that it is impossible not to love this book.

Selena is remarkable. The strength of her beliefs and her unwavering determination to succeed is astounding. Her heart is huge and her unselfish actions prove her inner beauty matches her outer beauty. She is a fierce, kickass heroine with incredible bravery and I want nothing but for her to triumph.

Though Sebastian is rough around the edges and his brutality is tough to swallow, I couldn't help but root for him. I loved watching him wrestle with what to do as he gets to know Selena and realizes that they have more in common than he thought. He is haunted by a tragic past and has trouble finding the good in the world after all that he suffered, yet he sees it in Selena which only makes him more conflicted and vulnerable.  Despite that, he remains a fighter and when he makes up his mind, he goes all in which I loved.

Even though it is not considered a romance novel, there is a delicious taste of a love story that is slow burning and progresses realistically. While I was hoping for a romantic element, this one does not over shadow the true adventure and mystery, only adding to the complexity of the story, and I loved it.
For one moment, time stood still…and Sebastian wasn’t Bloody Bastian on a mission to end a life, but a man sitting with a beautiful woman and making her feel good and safe.

However, just as any love can bloom, it can also quickly wilt, especially when faced with secrets and lies, and we learn that a romance between Sebastian and Selena may be doomed from the start.

Selena's friends are loyal as are Sebastian's crew, yet some harbor huge secrets and not all will make it out alive. All of the side characters have an important part in the story and I am looking forward to seeing some of them take on bigger roles as the series continues. Much is revealed in this book but even more is left unanswered, and I cant wait to dive back into the mystical world E.S. Bell has created as the next books in the series are published.

THIS REVIEW & MORE → Paws and Paperbacks

ARC received through NetGalley.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I requested this book, but I'm enthralled by what I read. The Dark of the Moon is an expertly written novel that is sure to please any lover of epic fantasy and nautical adventures.

The world created by E. S. Bell is wonderfully crafted. Lunos was once a solid land mass, but now is comprised of many different islands. The descriptions of the world are vivid and inventive, and it was easy to imagine myself there. The different religions and gods were intriguing to read about, as were the aspects of magic. In addition, the inclusion of other fantastical creatures and species added greatly to the complexity of the world the author created. The Vai'Ensai are one example of such and I greatly look forward to learning more about them in the future books!

All of the characters were well developed and complex. Selena was a wonderful protagonist and I felt myself rooting for her throughout the entire novel as she embarked on her quest. She was fierce, kind, unwavering in her faith, brave, and real. I also really enjoyed Sebastian as the other main character. Once driven by his need to avenge his family, he now wants to move beyond his dark, dangerous past. The taciturn, brooding man was easy for me to love, despite his menacing nature. The cast of secondary characters were engaging and delightful to read about also, and each have their own distinct personalities and backgrounds.

There is romance in the book, and from the blurb you can pretty much figure it out, but I absolutely adored the way it unfolded. It was very believable and well-developed, built slowly throughout the story, and didn't take away from the plot but rather added to it. This book is not without its twists turns, however, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how events unfold in the next one.

I want to comment on how excellent the writing is. I was in the middle of reading another series when I started this and had to stop because it was just too good to put down. Before starting, I actually was not aware the E. S. Bell was a pseudonym for contemporary romance writer, Emma Scott, and I honestly never would have guessed. Not many authors can go from writing one genre to the next so seamlessly. The Dark of the Moon reads like the work of a seasoned fantasy writer and I am very, very impressed.

The Dark of the Moon is a captivating novel that readers of fantasy and adventure books will absolutely love. I highly recommend it and I promise you will it will not disappoint!

P.S. It's free on kindle unlimited!

E.S. Bell's debut novel Dark of the Moon was phenomenal. It's a well-written impressive mainstream fantasy packed with adventure. The world and characters E.S. Bell has created are extensive and thorough. It's rich in legend, folklore, religion, and culture of the various nations of Lunos. The introduction to this world is well-paced and explained in an interesting way. The author doesn't overwhelm you with too much jargon. Her characters are diverse, interesting personalities that are easy to like. They grab your attention from the beginning. Serena, the protagonist, found a place in my heart. She's a Paladin of the Moon temple. Honorable, kind, and brave, she spends her time healing others despite the horrendous wound she she sustained in the last war. The plot really flowed. E.S. Bell's writing is fluid, rich in emotion and solid dialogue. The last third of the book was riveting. Both major and minor plot threads are resolved by the action-packed conclusion. Leaving a healthy dose of prior foreshadowing to lead us smoothly into the second volume of this amazing saga.
I'm hungry for the next book!!! Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long for the volume of The Chronicles of Lunos.

5 stars

There is a lot of things I like in a fantasy: action, adventure, politics, camaraderie, and a little romance. I got four out of five on these. I think the rest of the series will have more camaraderie since the series just began.

The world building was good, though as with all fantasy, slow. But even with the world building, I was enthralled. The MC was strong and felt real with flaws. The rest of the characters felt the same, though the ship crew felt a little more flat as we never had time to get to know them beyond the superficial. I do hope the rest of the series, the author concentrates on their role in the story, especially with that end, especially Whistle. He was my favorite.

So a good story, a good world beginning, and a cast of fun characters made this book truly fun.

A well-written fantasy novel filled with pirates and peril, Bell creates a world of interesting characters and places that are not what they seem.

To say anything else would be a spoiler, so do yourself a favor. If you read fantasy, read this book. If you're thinking about trying the genre, read this book.

I chose this book to read completely at random from my massive backlog of Kindle book downloads. (I have a serious problem guys. I need a support group, but I think that would backfire because we’d all just recommend more books to each other.)

This book pretty much blew me away. I’ll admit the opening, while action packed, had me thinking I may hate this book. It moved rather quickly and I was iffy.

I kept reading though, and I’m glad I did. This book is epic, so much happening, such deep characters, and an ending that left me craving more.

Selina is a wonderfully flawed heroine. She is a Paladin for the Shining Face of the Two Faced God and so good, yet she’s been cursed by her god for an act she committed that was out of her control. Selina can not feel heat, no matter how close she stands to a raging inferno, she will never be warm. The darker face of her god cursed her with a crescent moon shaped hole in her chest through which the cold continuously seeps out, surrounding Selina and punishing her for her crime. I was blown away by this flaw she was given, it’s so creative and unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

I also really loved Sebastian Vaas. The assassin hired to kill Selina could have been a very easy villain to hate, but despite all of the evil acts he has commuted, I felt for him. I rooted for him. I wanted him to succeed in his goals.

Then there’s Baachas, the villain. Wow, he was something else. The magic he used was awful and awesome at the same time.

And did I mention yet that there are Merkind in this book yet? Because there are. And they’re not Ariel!!!

There were a number of typos in the copy I read, but I know that the book has had a thorough proofing since the time I downloaded it. Even with those errors I still fell in love with the story and the characters and the author’s writing. I will absolutely be coming back for book 2 when the time comes.

SHOULD YOU READ IT? This is an utterly delicious book with complex and well written characters, and a page turning plot that that fantasy readers will eat up. There is a resolution at the end, but the plot is left wide open for book 2.

NOTE: At the time of writing this review (and later posting this review) the book is only available in print. The author assured me it would be back in ebook format, but... still waiting!

I received this book from net galley for an honest review. Thank you!!

This novel was a long and enjoyable read. It is written in third person point of view, but offers other perspectives from other characters besides the major ones. It combines so many themes including love, action, adventure, betrayal, magic, and vengeance. Every character has an agenda, but it not always forthcoming. It keeps you guessing as to how the characters will change or what they will become.
Selena Koren is a Paladin, a warrior for the shining face god. There 3 other gods, but Selena was chosen and given special powers. 10 years ago, she destroyed an invading army of thousands but caused the death of innocents. She was punished and only knows cold, never warmth. She is tasked with a journey to murder two people and this will destroy the crescent-shaped hole in her chest that breathes its icy breath. She has no choice but to accept this mission, for it is commanded by the leaders of her people, the Alluren, who also abandoned after the defeat of the Zak’reth. Selena is very trusting, which is dangerous.
Sebastian Vaas has several aliases but is known for being the world's deadliest assassin for the past 10 years. However, for the last 4 years, he has avoided assassination plots until he is approached by the Bazira, who ask him to kill Selena. He needs the money, but does not trust the Bazira. He agrees to the job. Sebastian hates all Zak’reth, since they killed his family, which was where he became known as "Bloody Bastian". He is a rather complex individual.
When Sebastian meets Selena, it is under an alias and he agrees for a price to take her on her journey. Selena does not know who he truly is. Selena's protector, Ilior, does not trust him, but guards Selena since she saved his life. However, there is more to Ilior than meets the eye. As they travel, they encounter others who join them on their journey, each with their own secrets. Sebastian and Selena fall in love with each other, but both do not realize how much the other means to them, but maybe that person can save them as well as accept them. Darkness still looms and many enemies will try to stop their mission. What is comes to down to is, can Selena be successful in her mission and if so, will it cause Sebastian to kill her? I cannot wait to read the next novel in the series to see where their journey takes them to next!!

I've always been a fan of fantasy but in the last few years I've leaned more toward Contemporary Romance and Rom Com. When I find out that one of my favorite romance authors is coming out with a fantasy series under the alias E.S. Bell, I was definitely like sign me up!! The first half is a little slow but normal because of all the plot and character development that's involved in creating the perfect fantasy world. The second half had me flipping the pages anticipating what would happen next!! I passed out with my kindle several nights straight! Now I'm left stunned and wondering when the next book will come out because I need answers!! I loved this story and can't wait for the next book!! So good!!❤️❤️
I received an early copy and voluntarily left my honest review.

The Dark of The Moon is the first book in a new fantasy series by E.S. Bell (another pen name for author Emma Scott). Like many first books in a fantasy series, there is a lot of world building initially so that the reader is able to understand and follow the storyline.

Selena Koren is a powerful Paladin and Summoner. During a previous war Selena was required to wipe out 12,000 Zak'reth using her summoning powers. Due to a miscalculation, Selena also wiped out the settlement of innocent people who she was supposed to be saving from the Zak'reth. Because of this, Selena is punished by the God with an open hole in her chest in the shape of the crescent moon which means she is forever cold. She no longer is capable of feeling any warmth........and THAT is just the prologue!! Selena is then tasked by her temple with killing 2 Bazira priests, and if successful she is promised that the hole in her chest will close over.

To begin with, I did find the story a little slow due to learning about the world, understanding the terminology and referring to the map to familiarise myself with the geography, wondering how all the characters were going to tie in together. I am SO GLAD I kept reading as once I was through part 1 the story really picked up, and I LOVED the second half. So many intriguing characters are woven into the one story, and I love how they are all eventually connected with the journey Selena is on. People are not always what they seem, and I was just WAITING for that to be exposed in the story.

I'm now eagerly looking forward to reading the second book in the series. I want to know if we will find out more about Ilior, the dragonman and Selena's faithful protector throughout this book. What is going to happen with Connor? I'm so curious about him. And Selena - that ending really has me wondering what is going to happen next.

A nautical, epic fantasy story featuring a heroine who is not only powerful, but bears a horrible and permanent wound reminding her of that power and a hero who is hired to assassinate the heroine? Sign me up! I love reading fantasy because there's always a new world to discover with unlimited possibilities and multiple complex characters to meet.

Selena Koren is the paladin on a quest to kill 2 powerful dark priests. While this mission completely compromises her morals, because she doesn't kill unprovoked, the desire to resolve the chronic cold she feels from the hole in her chest drives her to demand success and desperate times call for desperate measures. Selena embodies a lot of great characteristics - she is compassionate, resilient, intelligent and isn't afraid to trust strangers. Sebastian Vaas, the notorious and merciless killer, on the other hand, is cold, ruthless and very business oriented. When he has a goal to accomplish, he will do whatever means it takes to achieve it. He is not a "what you see is what you get" kind of guy, unless you really know him. And since he doesn't let people know him, he's more enigma than anything. I liked discovering his weaknesses and inner thoughts because they explain so much about him.

The world building paints a mystical picture of several islands separated by sea with ruling gods who seem more fickle than fair. There's several POVs and characters with several questions that come into play. I couldn't tether myself to any one particular person or relationship because no single person or pair really stood out amongst the rest given that a lot of the characters aren't that familiar with one another, except maybe Selena and Illior, but I was definitely invested in seeing Selena fulfill her quest and hopefully her wish. As for the moral dilemmas that come up, these pose some interesting discussion points regarding how much someone would sacrifice of themselves to get what they needed, especially when their actions are irreversible and likely reprehensible. The story started out slow and picked up the pace midway, with the end really showcasing some major action and twists. I'm interested to see what happens next, given that there's so many ways this could go and not all of the characters who have an important role have had their chance at the spotlight yet.
