Zen DiPietro is a lifelong bookworm, writer, and dreamer. Perhaps most importantly, a Browncoat Trekkie Whovian. Also red-haired, left-handed, and uber geek. Absolutely terrible at conforming. A recovering gamer, but we won’t talk about that. Particular loves include badass heroines, British accents, and the smell of Band-Aids. You can sign up for her newsletter at www.zendipietro.com.
I'm not really sure why I didn't get more deeply into these stories. I had some voluntary interruptions for other reads, etc., breaking the flow, but that's a "the chicken or the egg" situation: if I'd been more gripped by *this*...
The writing is generally quite good. There's plenty of action and intrigue, interesting world-building, and the characters and their camaraderie grew on me. Maybe my problem was Em/Fallon's own emotional reserve (especially in book one, where her amnesia has her feeling very alone, but analytical), or the pervasive uncertainty re. whom to trust (understandable, but not my preference), or the back-and-force relationship status between Em/Fallon and There are also some surprising (at least to me) leaps to confiding in someone, widening the cast circle.
Re. proofreading and editing, I caught under a dozen minor errors and merely iffy sentences combined, which isn't bad for so many pages. One was an internal-consistency goof: the codename/nickname Fury was once switched to Tempest. Also, in Fallon's regained memories, how could she be seeing her own face?
I posted individual reviews of the first two parts — it's one continuous tale, with sub-arcs providing a bit of partial emotional resolution. I should paste them in (edited for redundancy), though talking about "Fragments" has spoilers for "Translucid", and if I do specifics for "Coalescence", too, it'll doubtless be even more spoiler-y. For now, I'll just submit this.
I brought this book, well lucky me the whole trifecta, after reading the very first chapter in a anthology about Lim, a minor character in this saga. And my instinct was excellent for recognizing a great writer. Zen weaved a world so seamless and intriguing, that this review is starting to annoy me as it hinders my look for more of this world. Truth. I am afraid to look and be disappointed to not find next book. Worth five minutes to give this author the accolades deserved. Worthy of sitting next to Asimov. 22 stars. I do not exaggerate.
I picked up this box set on sale, it was quite possibly the best dollar or so that I’ve ever paid for a set of books. It’s very well written and was a great deal of fun to read. I enjoyed the action, I felt connected with most of the characters and the banter was just plain fun. It’s a polished bit of writing and anyone who likes a bit of sci-fi is probably going to enjoy this one.
Well written with memorable characters and Fallon, one badass black ops leader. She and her three team mates are the best of the best. But when Fallon's memory is zapped, the struggle back to normalcy while fighting an unknown enemy is well worth the time invested in this series.
Awesome books, never a dull moment, I love that this book is all about friends who have your back. Learning about yourself with the help of your friends even if you have no memory of them.
An awesome story. I found everything I enjoy in this trip of books. Comedy, good vs evil, multiple aliens and characters that are engaging on several levels. An exciting read. Highly recommended.
An amazingly well written story that I simply couldn't put down. The characters are full of life and very memorable. I'd recommend to anyone who likes Star Trek or Firefly.
