Formerly published as a four-volume set, Barnhouse's classic commentary on Romans comes back to life in this handsome two-volume set. Using his own translation, Barnhouse provides a comprehensive exegetical treatment of Paul's letter to the Romans that is renowned for its depth of insight, yet highly accessible to all readers. Though a respected scholar, Barnhouse spent most of his career as a dedicated pastor and was praised widely for his unusual ability to make the biblical message clear and practical. In Romans, Barnhouse uses Paul's famous epistle as a jumping-off point for a detailed exposition of core biblical doctrines. He proceeds phrase-by-phrase through the text and along the way each passage is examined in its immediate context and then related to broader biblical teaching. This allows Barnhouse to faithfully adhere to the Reformation maxim that Scripture interprets Scripture, and that it is perspicuous (clear) in its teaching, infallible, and authoritative. Thus, his focus on Romans becomes an exposition on the doctrines of the entire Bible. Reader's new to Barnhouse will appreciate his distinctive and lucid writing, while those familiar will again be able to hear a faithful and classic presentation of the Bible's message.
Donald Grey Barnhouse Th.D was an American Christian preacher, pastor, theologian, radio pioneer, and writer. He was pastor of the Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1927 to his death in 1960. As a pioneer in radio broadcasting, his program, The Bible Study Hour, continues today and is now known as Dr. Barnhouse & the Bible.
Barnhouse, a now deceased pastor from Philadelphia, began his time as a pastor preaching through Romans. This took him three and a half years. He saw his church grow and people come to the Lord. He was later asked to do a radio address from the book of Romans. He destroyed all his previous notes so as to study it afresh and with new eyes. While this was his intent I think having spent years in Romans that when he studied it again it gave us something special, it gave us someone who had so internalized the message of Romans that his second study, which produced over 500 radio shows and is the basis for this book, was of such a depth and so well thought out that this one of a kind commentary set brings so many new and amazing insights to passages as familiar as the back of our hand. Truly this is an amazing set. I hope one day to meet Barnhouse in heaven and shake his hand and thank him for being willing to be used by the Lord like this. Highest recommendation
I spent 1 year and 1 day reading this in-depth, awe-inspiring, soul-satisfying commentary on the Epistle to the Romans. The time invested will pay me back in dividends, I am certain. I love how my thoughts and words reflect the thoughts and words that I’ve picked up from reading Dr. Barnhouse over the last 1.5 years while reading both volumes of his Commentary on Romans.
If you are a lay person interested in deepening your faith and studying Romans, read this book. It is excellent!
