A one hundredth anniversary celebration of the teddy bear depicts the popular stuffed toy in a variety of nostalgic and surreal settings, in a photographic collection that invites readers to consider personal feelings of emotional attachment. 100,000 first printing.
Imagine my surprise when I sat down to read the whimsical teddy bear book I had just purchased and found a racist joke, a transphobic joke, and one aimed at DV survivors as well. I had to cut several pages out in order to feel ok about keeping the book around. The photos are lovely and nostalgic; it's a shame they had to add such tasteless gags for no reason.
It's really all about the pictures - and the photographs are so imaginative and fantastic! Mirja de Vries manages to take antique teddy bears, put them out in the world and capture them as if they are real people caught in every-day activities. The text was creative, and added to the joy of the book as well.
