Ireland: 189 A.D. A pursuit across the Great Wild to rescue an abducted woman leads to bloody complication for the woman warrior Liath Luachra. (Note: This short story is also the first chapter of Liath Luachra: The Swallowed)
Brian O'Sullivan was born in county Cork, Ireland. On completing a degree at University College Cork, he went on to travel extensively. He is now based in New Zealand with his family but returns to Ireland on a regular basis.
Brian writes fiction that incorporates strong elements of Irish culture, language, history and mythology. These include literary short stories (The Irish Muse collection), mystery thrillers (The Beara Trilogy) and contemporary versions of the Fionn mac Cumhaill/ Fenian legends (The Fionn mac Cumhaill Series and the Irish Woman Warrior Series).
Although he writes predominantly for an Irish audience, Brian's unique style and humour has meant that his books have become firm favorites of readers all around the world.
The sixth book in the the Fionn mac Cumhaill Series (Fionn: The Betrayal) was released in April 2025.
The author is currently working on the next book in the Beara Series.
Suggested readership: Lovers of heroic sagas, strong characters, Ireland of the 2nd century and anyone who likes a fast-paced action tale full of drama & danger.
The Pursuit by Brian O'Sullivan is a (too) short but impressive addition to the ongoing saga of Liath Luachra, who made her first appearance in the series "Fionn (Defense of Ráth Bládma") both by Irish Imbas Books.
Unlike many "historical dramas" appearing of late, O'Sullivan's work requires no suspense of disbelief. His well-drawn characterizations merge well with his grasp on world-creation - and feel authentic.
His people are emotionally acessible, even to those deprived of a steady diet of heroic literature as children. His neat-handed portrayal of the ongoing ethical struggle between survival and ethical stance continues to be a matter of great import in our modern world. His innate command of the rhythms of Gael, and the ability to translate them into everyday English, adds to the flavor of authenticity in his work.
Objective assessments aside, both of these series really "sucked me in." As they are both ongoing works in progress, I am REALLY waiting with bated breath for the next additions.
If you have not been priviledged to come across his work before - RUN, don't walk!!! to get your hands on them! I forsee Public Library status in the future.
Another great story in this fascinating series based on the Fionn legends. Liath Luachra and her band of warriors rush to rescue the kidnapped wife of their employer. Facts are a bit hazy, the employers are unpleasant, but Liath and her men are barely surviving and need the job. As always with an O'Sullivan story, the landscape is almost a character in the tale.
Another great book by Brian O'Sullivan, The Pursuit is a short but fast paced story of Liath Luachra, the heroine and her Fionn chasing the bad guys through treacherous bog lands. It's fast paced energy reading, and Liath is as intriguing as ever in a brutal kind of way. Read it, it's a quick read that will get you hooked into an interesting, well written and researched series.
