I love historical romance adventures of all sorts, including those set in the Wild West. My love for frontier tales with grit and passion came from watching Western movies while growing up on a cattle farm. In addition to winning the Laramie® award, my stories have won the RWA Golden Heart® once and been nominated three times.

This story takes place in Oregon 1868. Elodie needs to solve the mystery of the cave and whose bones are in there. Are they someone she loves? Two men go with her, both for their own reasons. Will they make it out alive? What is that thing in there? Human or otherwise? This story only takes about an hour to read but it packs a lot into a short tale. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope you've had the chance to grab it, if not subscribe to Jacqui's newsletter.
This is my first Jacqui Nelson book and it was a fast enjoyable read. Jacqui really puts a lot of detail into her writing. I could picture the surroundings, feel the cold as is I was watching a movie or play. This was quite different than any historical that I read so far and I look forward to reading more of her novels.
I've fallen in love with Jacqui Nelson's writing--again.
I received this title as a perk for her newsletter subscribers. Yes, I could've bought this title for a buck, but how could I not subscribe to Jacqui's newsletters? I'm genuinely interested in her new releases, writing, characters, and experiences.
CHOOSING BRAVERY is a keen example of a concise novella, containing everything I craved as a reader, and leaving everything unnecessary out of the story. Oh, the whole story was there...but, for example, I didn't have to wade through the months of recovery as Élodie Rousseau nursed Lachlan Bravery back to health (with all the expected bonding and tenderness developing). The title couldn't be more perfect. Neither could the captivating story, deeply rooted in time and place, historically accurate setting, meaningful character expectations, devious villain(s), surprises, mystery, sweet romance, suspense, and a once-in-a-lifetime match between Élodie and Lachlan. All with just enough words. Not too many, not too few.
I read slowly, enjoying every single scene. I sighed with satisfaction at the story's conclusion. I'm reminded, again, that Jacqui's writing sings! She paints the most captivating images, creates the most true-to-life characters, and makes me want to re-read (and review) every title she's penned.
As an author, I always hesitate to review books in my genre. Too many people might assume I'm praising a friend. By way of disclosure, I've met Jacqui Nelson once, long enough for a brief introduction among a group of women, without more conversation than a brief hello. I doubt she'd remember, much less know who I am. That's perfect. While experiencing this story, I was just an enamored reader, like so many others.
I really enjoyed this story. It is 3rd in the Lonesome Hearts Series. Élodie Rousseau's Parents vanished when she was young. She was raised by Eagle Feather and Faith, an Osage Warrior and a White Schoolteacher. With the knowledge they instilled in her she became a legendary guide. Lachlan Bravery, a fugitive tracker searching for a band of outlaws stumbles on Elodie. They connect but he fights it due to the demons he is chasing, or are they chasing him? I have always loved the tales about Native Americans. Their culture is vivid and brings alive the old west for me! This is another one of those stories! You won't put it down until you are finished!
Jacqui Nelson's - Choosing Bravery is a really fun historical book with a wonderful ending. Her love of history shows in the depths of her writing and the description of the elements. I could actually feel the cold dampness as she was describing a particular scene. I loved the banter between The characters, the intrigue of the unknown, as well as the mystery incorporated in this historical. Elodie and Lachlan are two people who were meant to have destiny together. Choosing Bravery saved these two lost souls destined by fate. Wonderful book.
This was a fun, unique, short story telling the hea of Lachlan and Elodie (Yellow Feather). I enjoyed watching these two as they sorted through their feelings and learned to fully trust each other and put their pasts to rest. There was quite a bit of smoke and mirrors and intrigue mixed into Lachland and Elodie's journey through the depths to discover what was true and real and important. Oh, and fireflies. Can't forget them. ;)
This is a short book on the trials of life and avoiding death. A young gal lost her parents years ago and raised by Indians, now finds a lone man injured near caves. The hunt for scientific information brings a French academic and the three people search the caves on the mountain. This is the story of that search which also brings forth spirit legends, bones of ancestors and deep pits. There is a mystic feel to the book and I enjoyed it.
I can actually see why Jacqui is an award winning author. As her westerns are so good and I find that I just can't put the book down until I am done. Every one of them that I have read so far have been that way. The story line and the characters you always like. Jacqui hit the ball out of the park with this!
This was a good story, but I kept waiting for more. I was disappointed at the end, because I was left not satisfied. And I am not totally sure why. So I will read it again, to see what I think I might be missing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this modern western novella. In her trademark style Nelson delivers a love story filled with adventure and intrigue. Her characters are strong and unique. The setting wild and mysterious. Can't wait for the next one.
A quick read. Elodie has a positive outlook on life, and Lachlan fights his demons. Together, they admit to their feelings amid danger and healing of souls. I enjoyed the setting as well as the characters.
I purchased a copy of this story through Amazon, and this is my unsolicited review.
Elodie is a white woman who has been under the protection of the local Indians since the death of her parents. She decides she needs to get to the bottom of what happened to them. In a dramatic opening scene, she meets Lachlan, a man haunted by his past and present, who threatens to kill her unless she kills him first. In a bold move, she tells him that is not how she was raised and that she chooses bravery. Her accidental use of his last name snaps him out of the mental morass he has been in, and she tends to his wounds over several weeks.
I love Elodie! Right from the start, she is strong willed and brave but with the capacity for immense compassion and kindness. Lachlan struggles with his demons, and the author exquisitely renders these two people’s evolving relationship with each other and their quests. The author describes a scene well, helping you slip right into the world of the characters. This is a relatively short novella, and the only real problem I have with it is that I think she spent too long on the setup as Elodie is about to leave the mountain. Things got more interesting once that large chunk of the novella was over. I love the intrigued, the romance, and the setting. As I am an Oregonian myself, I am a sucker for stories that take place in the old west time of my state’s history. I think the author did it, and the characters, justice.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
ONE CAPTIVATING DELIGHT!!! Wow! Talk about a bumpy ride. A whirlwind of unexpected actions and surprising events that propel all of your swirling emotions blazing to life drawing you in deeper and deeper. One intriguing storyline and engaging plot hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. All the drama, uncertainty and suspense make for one enjoyable experience. The characters are authentic, approachable and realistic with such depth and individuality its easy to relate. The scenes are vividly detailed and breathtaking you have no problem picturing each scenario as they play off one another perfectly. Twists and turns abound with all the trials and tribulations that bring this bad boy together beautifully before your eyes. Fantastic job Jacqui, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
This was an interesting story. The characters were well formed and their journey together was revealing of their character. It was a unique love story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story is just a moment in time, in the lives of 3 people, that decide the future for them. We get a bit of back story on our characters, to let us understand them, but this short story is just a snap shot. I did enjoy it and the writing is good, you get a real feel for them. It is worth the read but if your looking for a long drawn out picture of life in the west, this is not that. Enjoy

This beautifully written story is another stirring adventure set in the old west. Part of the Lonesome Hearts series, it is a quick engaging read. Once again, Ms Nelson plunges us into another time and place when two wounded souls, Elodie and Lachlan, search for truth and find love in the Oregon wilderness. The cultural backgrounds of the characters make them fresh and unique. The wild setting threatens the characters and pits them against not only one another, but the elements as well. I commend the author for creating a story that has depth and grit while delivering a heartwarming ending.
I'm a big fan of American Historical Romance and an explosive adventure like this is one of the big reasons why. I love this authors lyrical writing style, her attention to historic detail and her amazing ability to transport me into a place and time of her own choosing. I swear I can close my eyes and feel the cold on my skin and the snow under my feet even though I'm comfy and warm? I think takes real talent! Her characters Elodie, a wilderness guide, and Lachlan, a wilderness tracker are just two shining examples of the unending curiosity, bravery and resilience of our forefathers. I really wish this was a full length novel because I really want to read more about these fascinating characters. I read a complimentary copy of this book and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
This is the third book in this series and though it is shorter then the first two it still packs a punch. I adore the American Indian culture and its spirituality and this story offers hints of this. The author's description of the main characters ' surroundings puts you right in the middle of the action. The two main characters are both searching for the bones of loved ones and are still unconsciously grieving for them and blame themselves for not saving them. These two soothe each other with their words and caring falling in love without effort.
I always enjoy this author's books as she always brings unique information into the story. Nice work, Ms Nelson.
If you enjoy your western romances with some nail-biting suspense you'll enjoy this short story! The author does a superb job of painting a picture of the winter wilderness and later of a cave they explore in search of Élodie's parents. She saves a gravely injured man from certain death and during the course of repairing his broken body, develops feelings for him. But Lachlan is just as damaged within as he is on the outside. Can these two find a way to heal one another or will their spirits be cast adrift? You'll have to read this engrossing story to find out!
Book three in the Lonesome Hearts series I bought this book sometime ago and never read until now. I will be reading the rest of the books in this series. The story is placed in Oregon Territory - 1868. Élodie Rousseau went to live with an Osage warrior and a logging camp schoolmistress who joined forces to return Élodie's beloved spirit horse, after her parents disappeared. With them as her teachers, she became the legendary Cascade Mountain guide, Yellow Feather. Legendary Far North fugitive tracker, Lachlan Bravery and Élodie meet. They will have a lot to over come before they get their happy ending. A book I recommend.
Another wonderful story in this creative series. Mystery and excitement. I highly recommend you read this story and all the others in this series🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖💖💖💖💖
