Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, Vol. 6

An epic story of war and survival set in the legendary Gundam universe!

In the Universal Century year 0079, the space colony known as Side 3 proclaims independence as the Principality of Zeon and declares war on the Earth Federation. One year later, they are locked in a fierce battle for the Thunderbolt Sector, an area of space scarred by the wreckage of destroyed colonies.

From the frozen wastes of Antarctica to the abyssal depths of the ocean, Operation Thunderbolt is under way. Io Fleming heads back into battle aboard the Federation MS carrier Spartan . While taking a perilous course through the Antarctic Ocean, Spartan is pursued by a Zeon submarine unit. Io takes the controls of the awesome new RX-78AL Atlas Gundam, but as always, it’s not the machine but the pilot that makes the difference in the unforgiving crucible of combat.

Author and illusatrator Yasuo Ohtagaki brings us the next chapter in the Thunderbolt saga. Io's first mission aboard the Spartian is to rescue his new crewmate and band parter Lieutenant Bianca Carlyle from an underwater attack by Zeon remnates who are bent on taking the rebuilt Physo Zaku back. Antarctica is the area where the battle takes place both on the glacers and below. Io's piloting of the Atlas Gundam takes the prototype to the limit as he goes up against a Zeon underwater mobile armer with mega-partical cannon. This is a great fast read and I highly recommend it to all Gundam fans and mech fans. I'm looking forward to reading the next volume.

Pretty interesting volume that focuses on a new character, rather than either of the two established "main" characters of this particular tale. The time skips (it's constantly going backwards in time for the first half of the story) are a little jarring, but once it gets rolling the story and action are tons of fun. This series is still doing an excellent job of making it hard to root for one side over the other, because there are plenty of heroes and bastards on both sides of this war.

Thunderbolt, vol 6 opened in a fascinating reverse presentation; each chapter taking place several hours before the one before it, eventually circling back around to where we started at. The story continues to impress, with this entry dealing with camaraderie and the loss of said comrades. An excellent read, especially for Gundam fans.

Best volume of this yet. The setting was great, the interactions between Bianca Carlyle and Io Fleming are the most characterization I've seen in the series so far, and the time-skip method of storytelling worked really well.

This one takes a weird reverse order approach to its first half when it feels like it doesn’t really need to. It makes things more confusing than they need to be, but it rebounds in the second half with some strong action

Overall a good volume. I didn't like all the time jumps back and forward again. But the story came together in the end and now we have a new character Bianca who should prove interesting to be around Io Fleming.

bonus points for Io's frustration at not being able to murder the ocean.
