Tetsuya Kuroko doesn’t stand out much. In fact, he’s so plain that people hardly ever notice when he’s around. Though he’s just as unremarkable on the basketball court, that’s where his plainness gives him an unexpected edge—one that lets him execute awesome moves without others noticing!

Seirin’s fighting an uphill battle against Murasakibara and Himuro of Yosen. But a bit of inspiration from Kise helps Kagami get in the zone! Meanwhile, Himuro’s encouragement finally convinces Murasakibara to take the game seriously! The quarterfinal match between Seirin and Yosen is about to be decided!

“The ace is the guy carrying everyone’s hopes and dreams! Limits?! I’ll smash past every single one!”

If the previous couple of volumes slowed down a bit and gave us time to savor and enjoy everything that was going on this set of volumes picks up speed quite a bit. Of course, the ending of the Yosen game was an important landmark to set but the beginning of the Rakuzan/Shutoku game was long awaited.

There must be no other character that has been so shrouded in mystery as Akashi has been from the very beginning of the series; so, finally getting to properly meet him felt like a milestone in and of itself.

However, the whole ordeal gave me a bit of whiplash, with how wildly the tone of each chapter could vary. From the high of the Yosen game to the tense and serious atmosphere of Kise and Haizaki; to end on the intricate mind game between Akashi and Midorima and the intrigue interspersed of the Teiko years.

It certainly wasn't boring at all.

Having all the members of the famed Generation of Miracles finally on the scene is nothing if not gripping, and it makes me want to know everything about them all even more fervently now.

At the time of this review, I have completed the entire series.

This was an action-packed volume, where we see three games!

Game 1: Yosen vs. Seirin
We see the end of this game. Kise delivered his pep talk to Kagami, which has its desired effect. Kagami is doing things that people have not seen before, especially on pages 34-35. This should not be totally new to sports manga fans. Sakuragi did similar feats in Slam Dunk. Now I think the atmosphere of this series makes basketball seem otherworldly. On pages 52-53, it was revealed from Kise that Murasakibara supposedly cannot do something that both Aomine and Kagami can do. Pages 55-58 did another thing that Sakuragi did in Slam Dunk, which I mentioned in a review for Slam Dunk.

Oh, Himuro! On pages 61-66, we get some important information and character development about Himuro. First, we get Aomine who explains to Momoi about Himuro's relationship to the zone. Then we have Himuro deliver a speech to Murasakibara that was good about how he knows he doesn't have the talent of Kagami, but that doesn't matter: "I know. I already...knew that...All this time...I've been jealous of his talent from the start...Come on...You've got the talent I'd kill to get my hands on. And now you're gonna throw the game, just like that? It feels like I'm gonna lose my mind, I'm so mad...!" Due to this attitude, the best I could compare Himuro in terms of manga athletes would be Oikawa from Haikyu!!. He is not part of the Monster Generation, but he has the respect of 4 monsters. That is who Himuro is.

Murasakibara is not as apathetic as he appears. This is what he says in response to Himuro: "UGH! BACK OFF! You're really getting on my nerves. Are you serious? crying and all. Maybe I actually realized it earlier...though I never really thought about it. This is a first all that annoying [expletive]...is actually somehow impressive now. [Sigh] Fine. I guess I have no choice, so I'll stay in 'til the end." Then he asks for a hair tie, which means things just got serious!

Except for Kuroko, it seems when they do not want to lose they resort to teamwork. Murasakibara, can you please stop wanting to crush everyone, including Kiyoshi? We get it you can crush things, calm down! Page 105 in the last panel, we see Murasakibara do something scary! The eyes! Yes, page 116 tells us what Murasakibara did and Kiyoshi and Kagami were the ones who noticed. Page 134-you're lying Murasakibara, which Himuro calls you out on, on page 135. Look at Murasakibara on page 136! He looks so young and emotional! Which means Murasakibara is not as indifferent as he seems based on his reaction.

On page 138, I like the vibes between Seirin and Kise's team.

Himuro and Kagami Revisited
"Homeschoolers, explained what agnostic means to your neighbor!"-Tim Hawkins. If you ever watch this clip called Tim Hawkins-Religion and Message Bible then you can see this line, which was in my mind on page 140. Kuroko finally broke it down to Kagami about how Himuro and himself can still be brothers. "But why choose between being brothers or being rivals? Why not just be both? Would that BE SO HARD?" No, it wouldn't be! Thank-you Kuroko for explaining something that has been bugging me about Kuroko's Basketball so far. There seems to be this fixation that you cannot be friends with people outside your team, even if you have a history with someone else. While I am not an expert in sports manga (only have read or in the middle of 4), this is not a characteristic for all of them. Haikyu!! has no problem with "both," but comparing it to Kuroko's Basketball is a little like comparing apples to oranges for they are different sports. If I compare it to Slam Dunk then it is a little bit harder. Slam Dunk seems to be more implicit about this concept. I want to say they are more like Haikyu!! then Kuroko's Basketball, but they do not really explicitly talk about the concept of rivals and friends in Slam Dunk.

Blast from the Past
Scary individual has arrived from the Generation of Miracles past. Look at page 159! There is some good stuff, including the look on Kise's face! He is throwing daggers with that look! Also the scary individual is a bit twisted on page 161. Kise also laid down a declaration of war to this blast from the past: "I don't care much about the whole "Miracle Generation" thing. You said the same thing once, Kagami-chi. But what I can say is the title's not meant for a jerk like you. I won't just hand it to you gift wrapped..."

Game 2: Kaijo vs. [Spoiler]
Our blast from the past is in this game against Kise. This scary individual is similar to Kise in terms of talents, but the scary person's talent is more ruthless. Now this is where we get into woo-woo. On page 186, Kuroko tries to explain it, but it still seems a bit off. I guess it could be possible, but would that mean in a way it is more like a psychological battle? Yet, we get renewed by Kagami: "Still...No Way He's Gonna Lose This!! Not To This Slimy Jerk...He Promised...That He'd Win! That We'd Face Off In The Semi-Finals...There's No Way He'll..." As I write this, it reminds me of Shohoku and Kainan from Slam Dunk. Page 207 we have Kise do something amazing once again showing he IS part of the Miracle Generation! Let's here it for perfect copy! On page 211, I'm like "why can't you? unless the ability is too great for you?" Aomine may not be on the same team as Kuroko and Kise anymore, but he is still has the title of ace. The person the team counts on when the time matters most, which he totally did on page 226. Also I got Princess Bride vibes on page 227.

Game 3: [Spoiler] vs. [Spoiler]
I cannot say much, because it will all lead to spoilers. I will talk around stuff using quotes from this game. First, we find out which team has the remaining three of the five Uncrowned Generals in combination who is the captain makes this one team a SCARY team! Second, I want to highlight the introductions for these two teams.
Team 1: "HERE THEY COME!! Standing Shoulder to Shoulder With Rising Tokyo Programs To-oh and Seirin, They're The Only King That Hasn't Given Up Its Throne! This Veteran Team Is As Indomitable As Their Motto, And They've Placed In Tournaments For 11 Straight Years! THE BATTLE TESTED KING..."
Team 2: "The Team That Won The First Winter Cup And Hasn't Stopped Placing Or Winning Since...The Oldest And Strongest King...The True Emperor..."
These were great intros! It would be like if Kageyama and Oikawa were entire team, so I have decided Team 1 is Kageyama and Team 2 is Oikawa.

Quotes/Dialogue
1. Kageyama Player 1: "For such a strong school, they're way less uptight than I would've thought."
Kageyama Player 2: "They even seem weirdly normal..."
Kageyama Player 1: "..."
Kageyama Player 3: [WHAP] "What're you saying? I'll burn you."
Kageyama Player 2: "Ouch!!"
Kageyama Player 3: "They're anything but normal."
Kageyama Player 2: "Huh?"
Kageyama Player 3: "If he's #4, that means he's the captain. A first-year, who only just joined the team. That's totally unheard of, no matter how amazing he is. But what's even crazier...is that the rest of the team, even the guys on the bench, don't have a problem with it. Of course they recognize his talents and cheer him on, but...normally, the upperclassmen would totally resent him for snagging a spot in the lineup."
Kageyama Player 4: "And don't forget the Uncrowned Generals. They're all proud and have plenty of tricks. But all three of them just accept that he's captain. Once you take all that into account, the whole situation is bizarre. And that's putting it mildly. Anyone who can make others submit like that...is anything but normal." Yeppers! Also "submit" is a keyword here.
2. "He's practice more than all of us combined. And he made the team during the summer as a second year...but didn't become a starter until he was a third year. It's not that he doesn't have talent, but still...It's taken blood, sweat, and tears to get him where he is...feels the weight and responsibility of being in the lineup more than anyone. That's why he's got our trust. But he can be a little rough on you younger guys. There're plenty of good things about him, too...Oh, right!" This reminded me of Kita from Haikyu!! when I was reading this again, but I do not think Kita would say he has talent.
3. "I don't know a single person on this team...who slows me down." Such growth! My heart! I think someone has caught "the importance of teamwork" from Kuroko.
4. "The only ones allowed to look me in the eye while speaking...are those who obey me. Those who oppose me...will not look down on me. [SHUMP] You hold your head too high." CHILLS! This is one scary dude! Very intimidating on page 319.
5. "I was the one who discovered your latent talent...and I'm prepared to remind you of that." Yeah, yeah. That is partially true, but discover doesn't mean "made." Remember that!
6. "My orders are absolute." Like Murasakibara, I got tired of this character's obsession with "absolute." To quote myself, the only absolute is God. Everything else will fade with time.
7. "But you will lose. Who do you think it was who brought you all to heel? Not even the Miracle Generation...CAN DEFY ME." Whoa!
8. Kageyama Player: "You gonna sit on your butt all day? I'll beat you to a bloody pulp."
Another Kageyama Player: "You see that slogan up there? Do it some justice!"
Different Kageyama Player: "There's no giving up yet! Not while there's still time on the clock." I love the Kageyama team in this moment, especially when we see the Kageyama Duo stepping up. Who I am going to call Kageyama and Hinata, which I will show you why in the next piece.
9. Hinata: "That hurt. So I kept training, even after quitting the club...Imagine my surprise when I got to high school. The guy I swore I'd beat someday...was on the same team as me. There's no point in holding a grudge against you now, though. Instead, I'm hoping to earn your respect. Maybe that looked like competition to you..."
Kageyama: "Why didn't you say something?
Hinata: "Huh? PFFT..."
Kageyama: "What's so funny?"
Hinata: "That suggestion, naturally!! Say something? Like, 'you whupped me once, so now I'm giving it my all! Respect me!'? Too lame!!" I have no intention of saying that. I'm not ready to earn your respect just yet. I'm just gonna practice even more than you. That's what I decide I've gotta do." Need I say more?

Hyuga says something about Kageyama and Hinata from the Kageyama team about how he thinks they are like Kagami and Kuroko in terms of being their team's light and shadow. I think they are more like Kageyama and Hinata.

Verdict: At this point, game 3 is not over yet!

*4.6. Another great volume. Even though seirin wasn’t playing I really enjoyed this. Seeing Midorima and Akashi was a really entertaining match, especially with the relationship they had in high school. I also liked seeing Akashi just being a bad ass and showing his power. As someone whose watched this series severally, I’m reading the manga for the first time while watching and it’s still surprising how we don’t really get to see Akashi until the end of the series. The wait really makes him seem more badass. I also liked seeing the growth with Midorima and him trusting his teammates more. Overall this was a great volume only reason I’d say it’s not fully a 5 is probably cause while I like these characters they aren’t my favorites. Asides from that a great volume and I can’t wait to see how this match goes.

Typically don’t rate manga except for the first and last volume because it starts off and concludes the entire series, and I can just give my overall thoughts on the review for the last volume, but can’t stop myself from giving this 5 stars since I was engrossed from beginning to end.

I also might be a little biased because Midorima is my favorite character, and I think about his and Takao’s dynamic constantly, but seeing the backstory of their friendship is something I thoroughly enjoyed.

A solid 4/5 a good match but for me it wasn’t as intense as the anime which is strange to say but it was still good and shutoku vs Rakuzab has been fun I honestly finished this a few days ago so I don’t exactly remember when I finished it but it was still good nevertheless.
