It's stage three of the advancement exams, and to pass, Soma must beat the new Council of Ten's ninth seat--Akira Hayama. Por un momento odie a Hayama y de verdad quería golpearlo por idiota.

Lo bueno es que reflexionó y después de una buena cachetada de Jun (¡Así se hace Jun XD!) regresó con los buenos y sigue siendo un tierno por Jun :3

AAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I really really admire Souma. He is so passionate about cooking, he cares about learning more about techniques and even unique ways to make the dish better, he use his failures to be a better chef, and he just have a good heart when it comes to the people he cares about. He is just an amazing personality that really inspires me a lot... It's just great!

This battle was great!

World: Art is solid. The world building is good cause it's about the dish this time around. Traveling around looking for bear was kinda nice.

Story: Solid story of the rematch. Pacing was good, good was solid. The stakes were week done and emotionally earned. Solid.

Characters: Both Soma and Hayama are done well with strong emotional stakes. This made this battle matter. Hayama was done well.

Solid.

Onward to the next book!

The tension builds. Learning the back stories and seeing how and why makes the story more enjoyable.

Another middling entry in a previously excellent series. Soma takes center stage in a competition about cooking bear meat, which is fine unto itself, but all the interesting supporting characters are elsewhere and seem to have taken a lot of the energy with them.

And once again, the extended story arc about the new villainous head of the cooking school trying to drive our hero and his friends out of the school is proving to be the downfall of this series. I get depressed every time I look at the map of the current tournament and its many levels of competition and realize how much longer this is going to be dragged out.

Gotta love Soma’s determination- it’s so inspiring!

Also, I love the detail they’ve added to Soue’s eyebrows- they’re just like the old Dean’s! 😂😂👏

Not only does this manga make me feel incredibly hungry, I am also learning an awful lot about cooking techniques I previously had no knowledge of.

Sigo creyendo que el personaje de Hayama daba para mucho más y ha ido decayendo conforme avanza la historia.

I'm surprised at the popularity of Akira because I just don't really like him.

Anyway, Akira joined Central to protect his mentor, Jun...with her seminar disbanded, she has nowhere to go (at least, according to him). Central also offers to build him a special laboratory and give him all he needs to continue his scent/spices research. If he doesn't accept Central's offer, they'll confiscate the research he's done with Jun.

Soma and Akira have several days to prepare for the bear meat challenge. Soma, who has never cooked bear meat before, experiments with some seasonings to determine how the strong stink of bear meat can be overcome. He also bands together with previous rival Kura, who wants to see Akira taken down (Kura lost his seat on the Elite Ten, and he describes Akira's ascension to their ranks to Soma). The two work with different spices and even hire trackers/guides to go up the mountain and experience the environment a bear would live and hunt in.

Soma seems to be delving into psychological cooking nowadays. Not only does he want to "understand" the bear, and therefore its meat -- he often asks well-placed questions to his rivals or opponents (Azami, Akira) to seek out their motivations for their actions.

The judges for Soma's third test are Alice's father and two twin girls his own age with expert tasting abilities -- Alice's mother's assistants.

Both Soma and Akira present fried bear meat dishes, taking an extreme risk. The breading of the fried foods traps any scent within, so if the bear meat smells in any way, this cooking procedure will magnify the stink. Both rivals manage a dish that is delicious and not malodorous -- but based on judges' comments, it seems Akira has bested Soma. But then the judges try the already-delicious food with the sauces Soma and Akira have prepared, and it turns out that Soma has TENACITY. But honestly, either one of them could've won.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 22 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (182–190) of the on-going manga series.

The Promotion Examination event continues with the third round focusing on the matchup between Sōma Yukihira and Akira Hayama. Prior to the matchup, Sōma decides to get to know the source of his ingredient better – bear meat. So, he and Terunori Kuga go into the mountains to get to know bears better. Along the way, Sōma learns how Akira Hayama became a conformist and aligned himself to Azami Nakiri and his Central Culinary Institute.

Apparently, the Azami Administration disbanded the Shiomi seminar, compromised the seminar's business partnerships, and held their research data hostage to extort Akira's allegiance. Compelled by his love for Jun Shiomi, Akira joined the ranks of Central as a temporary 9th seat on the Council of Ten, vowing to protect the Shiomi seminar, despite Jun's objection because Azami is not trustworthy.

Despite promising a shokugeki, Sōma didn't issue one and the match continues. Both Sōma and Akira decide to fry the bear meat and while Akira's serving is technically better it was the accompany sauce did Sōma brought the judging back on balance. With the three judges, one vote went to Sōma and the other went to Akira with the final vote still in consideration as the tankōbon closes.

This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It gives a nice update to Akira Hayama and what has happened since we last saw him during the Fall Classics. The narrative plays the rematch extremely well with the stakes for both characters upped. If Sōma loses he would be expelled from Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute and if Akira loses the research data from the Shiomi group would not be returned.

All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 22 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Rematch time between Soma and Hayama! The match is actually pretty good, with Soma having to compete with Hayama's obviously better sense of smell in using the potent and stinky bear meat. I like how Soma's continuous attempt at weird food combinations come to his rescue here, finding new ways to overcome his more apparent lack in skill. I also like the depth of Hayama's character, clearly having lost his way and given in to his arrogance but still being grounded in the motivation to help Jun and pay back what he was given.

I do have problems with how abrupt the character turn for Hayama is, though. He goes from skilled-but-sort-of-goofy supporting character to arrogant-condescending-jackass since the last time we saw him, and his backstory gets brushed over. It's like he woke up one day and decided to be a jerk. Everything he's doing makes sense but the creators cut out all the emotional scenes for one short page-long conversation. And instead of showing remorse, or doubts, or any of that, he's gone all-in on this new role.

Oh and "the gifting" is kind of stupid and having the 'foodgasm' scenes stripping young preteen girls to their underwear, and chaining them up in bondage wear, is really creepy. Really really creepy.

A more subtle contest than the ones in volume 21, this one focuses on a rematch between Soma and Akira Hayama, who defeated him in a previous competition. The idea that the "rebels" have to defeat Council members in order to advance to their next year at the school is a pretty brutal one, though.
I very much liked the way in this match was handled, and the things that the reader was taught about both the meat and the ways of cooking and seasoning it. Also, the addition of three previously-unmet members of the Nakiri family was great. The twin girls display some of the personality of their mother, but their knowledge of food was the key to why they were judges.
The recipes in this book are perhaps a bit too simplified, since most people won't be able to pick up bear meat at the local market.

I mean, OBVIOUSLY I loved this. Yukihira vs. Hayama, Nakiri hereditary secret powers revealed, lots of Kuga and his minions, getting to meet Alice's dad and his awesome eyebrows... I don't approve of the menu , but as always, it's super fun to see how Yukihira comes up with his dish, and how others respond to it. A decision is reached as far as the winner goes, but total cliffhanger as to the really important part--NOOOOOOO, now I have to wait until April 3rd to find out what happens!!!

Anyway, this series is ridiculous and awesome and stupid and wonderful and it makes me so happy whenever one arrives in my mailbox, ha!

Soma and Akira face off in the battle of the bear meat

Soma grows as a cook by learning everything he can about bears in preparation for this event. Soma is a cocky character but he has the heart, courage, and skill to pull it off. The winner of the battle is not revealed in this volume (cliffhanger!!) but I'm rooting for Soma - he deserves this one. The art, as usual, is beautiful, and the pace has picked up a bit.

Cheesiest 'food orgasm' line in this volume: "With one taste, we too could easily become a pair of well-trained pets" (said by two teenage girls after eating a bear burger, clothed in bikinis and fake bear paws)

4 out of 5 stars

So, I finally got myself all caught up with the anime, so I decided to pick up the volume that corresponds with the episode I just finished.

Food Wars! isn't anything crazy in terms of story, but boy does it make me hungry. Also, I actually do learn a lot about food, and cooking from reading/watching this series.

Also, where in the world does a person get bear meat? I live in Canada. We have lots of bears. Are you telling me that somewhere someone is actually selling bear meat. If so, wow.

And good job Soma! I'm looking forward to seeing his dish slap some sense into Hayama.

*sigh* In some areas Food Wars is losing steam. I like Hayama and that he is having a rematch with Yukihira but I am so over “central.” Ever since Nakiri’s dad got brought in it’s been annoying. Everything is unfair and exaggerated. How does this jerk wad who got removed from the family even have this spot?! Every battle is the same premise. I know we are building up to Yukihira finding himself and his cooking but right now it’s in between a rock and a hard place story wise…

Really loved seeing Soma’s passion for learning all kinds of different ingredients that could or wouldn’t work. Some of the banter got to be a little much for me though, hence the docking of one star. I wonder how Hayama will react to Soma’s dish...

Extra points for all the man-service! Damn Soma looks good with his hair wet and I didn't think it was possible to make Hayama look even hotter than before but he is! Oh, and the story is good too......
