The evil twin is back, and the rest of Emmy's family is waiting in the shadows to see who comes out on top.

This one is a heartwrenching volume and you can feel The End creeping up on you. <--this is always the time I feel my stomach drop out a bit because I never know if the author can pull off the final installment, you know?
Regardless, here comes Harrow County, Vol. 8: Done Come Back...

So good. Th intensity ramps up in volume seven, which I assume is the penultimate volume. And as the subtitle says, "Dark Times A' Coming." Maybe I shouldn't say exactly who it is, but in this volume someone . . . related to Emmy returns from the dead to battle her for the soul of Harrow County. The other person brings along her army, and Emmy has her own allies, including a newly emboldened Berenice, her best bud. As Berenice points out, having learned some of Lovey's tricks come in handy! Witch battles, with a strong and really likable girl character leading the charge! There's a least one dramatic death in this volume, I warn ya.

We get more background on how things came to be, having to do with the witch Hester. We also begin to raise questions about haint identity: Just who is and is not a hint in this hyar town?

This is maybe the best volume of the series, as it begins to make good on that early promise. Great mythologizing, great art. Some real horror here, too, just to say. A series I highly recommend. Creepy, and also at times heartwarming.

It all feels like things are coming to a head as forces gather to take out Emmy. Kammi is, of course, resurrected and Emmy and Berenice need to team up to defeat her. There's some heart wrenching moments as not everyone survives. ...And then there's that cliffhanger. Good thing volume 8 is already out so I don't have to wait. Tyler Crook's art really visualizes this story, giving Harrow County a unique look.

Damn...talk about death galore. NO one is safe!

Emmy's sister has returned from the dead. What's her mission now? To destroy everything sacred to Emmy. A mass murdering spree begins as she goes after everyone who Emmy loves. Dad? Briance? Even skin boy are all in trouble. Without giving any spoilers this is a action packed fucked up volume.

Good: Everything comes to a head and it's bloody and nasty and worth every moment of character build up. When characters die and you feel the emotion, that means the story did its job. Cullen Bunn carefully gives us each character and their motives and so when something happens you feel that shit. Also, the art feels perfect here, a sense of dread and bloody hell coming down on poor Emmy and Harrow County.

Bad: The very ending brings back someone else, but it's kind of confusing since I thought she was already someone...

Overall, another fantastic volume. The build up of all the volumes into this worked well for the series to give the strongest volume so far. This series turned me around completely on Cullen Bunn's work. A 5 out of 5.

Another 4.5 star volume. I know Culleen Bunn writes a million things each month, but I think this is by far his crowning achievement.

Harrow County has been a consistently solid series throughout its run, but with volume 7 Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook have come up with the best book in the series to date. All the previous storylines come together in a big showdown, characters die, others get hurt, and there’s no turning back for Emmy anymore. I get the feeling that we are moving towards the endgame, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

In this second to last volume of Harrow County the author, Cullen Bunn, finally pushes Emmy past decency. However, she is still motivated by all of the right reasons. So the question is, how far can a good person go to do the right thing and still be considered good? Emmy's friend Bernice witnesses Emmy go past what she considers the edge. I'm less convinced that she's gone overboard though. I think that line fluctuates for everyone and it's interesting how Bunn has demonstrated that here in Harrow County.

Volume 7 is easily the goriest volume so far. The violence really gets amped up and I think that is a testament to a horror series that it didn't just start at 11. It gave itself room to really show a climax.

My only problem with this volume is that it dropped in a previously unmentioned religious aspect that I personally don't think the book needs. Bernice is suddenly enthralled with quoting the bible as a sort of spell book. Because in order to fight a witch, become a bible witch. Doesn't work for me.

Bullet Review:

On one hand, a character returns - and it's always a bit cheesy when you supposedly kill a character in an early volume, just to have that person return later in the series. On the other hand, when that resurrection is good and the story is gripping, well, every rule is meant to be broken, amirite?

I loved (and hated!) what happened to Emmy, Berenice, and the Skin Boy. Lots of drama and gore in this one, and it sets up for a nice new storyline that I am eager to see.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, HERE is the good stuff. Harrow County finally gets down to business with Emmy and her wicked sister battling to the death. I feel like the last few volumes have all been setup or side plots - thank goodness we're now back in the saddle as Emmy tries to save the soul of Harrow County from her sister and, potentially, from the resurrected Hester. The art in this volume is outstanding, more gorgeous and awful than anything that's come before in this series. It's truly worth taking your time to pour over the pages. My sole complaint? We only get four issues!

This volume is the payoff that the entire series has really been setting us up for.

Every piece from every volume fits into this book. So when the major events happen, and boy do they happen, the impact from the journey we have been on with Emmy hit hard. Its a testament to Cullen Bunn's creativity, how he is able to set up all these different pieces just so for these moments. But not only is the build up fantastic, but the execution of this volume is as well. It was very hard to put this down as the pacing is excellent and the plot now is just falling into place bit by bit.

One of the things that has been explored is Emmy's inherent benevolence, which may be hiding her inherent malevolence. The suppression of her more darker aspect comes back directly upon her, as something that should have been taken care of permanently now returns for pure vengeance. Man, and the intensity of the pure hate and evil that Bunn writes for the villain, so good. I really felt for Emmy as panels illustrated just how hateful the villain is.

Speaking of, this is the best volume, art wise, by Tyler Crook. And that is saying a lot because just go look at the other volumes. They are freakin awesome and beautiful. But this volume steps it up with moments of high intensity action, beautiful and dark scenery, moments of pure emotion, and twisted and violent art that works so fuckin well in the book. I really hope Tyler Crook keeps this style of art going in whatever comes next for him, cause man, it deserves to be up there with any other great modern day artist.

This volume is a tour de force for two creators who invested a lot of storytelling into this book. If you have got this far and haven't read this volume, what are you doing reading this review? Go read it already!

Kammi is back…as if there was any doubt she wouldn’t be! In this penultimate volume, forces are gathering to destroy Emmy and all of Harrow County. Emmy endures two significant losses but has no time to mourn as Kammi is relentless. Bernice fights right alongside her and the two women do their best to keep Emmy’s “sister” at bay. We find out why Emmy and Kammi are so important to the witch coven, and who they represent. Just as you think Emmy has scored a hard-won victory at the end, she makes a soul-crushing decision and we know her biggest battle is still ahead of her.

As we head into the last volume, I wanted to give a final shout-out to Tyler Crook’s art. His haint creatures were creative and varied, and I thought of his work and H.P. Lovecraft’s as being similarly inspired. His work came to define Harrow County for me with its townspeople, rural landscapes and sinister woods. The only complaint I had was of his giving Emmy and others too much of a red-cheeked look- it looked as if they had bad head colds for no discernible reason, although I soon stopped noticing it. The two-page spread opening this book was creepy awesomeness, and I will never look at a close-up of someone’s teeth without flashing back to this series.

Harrow County is nearing the conclusion and this sets in motion the final confrontation. Cullen Bunn has managed the rare feat of not having a sluggish volume in my opinion. Each volume has offered more world building and character focus. I honestly hope Dark Horse and Netflix can work out a deal for a Tv show. The storyline is about the return of a villain from a previous volume and the intention to weaken of hero before the inevitable confrontation. The artwork and characters continue to impress and it's actually a shame to see this series close out.

Why the 5?

Harrow is one of the great Dark Horse books. Dark Horse don't have a lot of recognition in the market but they have so many great titles. The artwork is Lovecraft style and the book is a lot of fun for horror fans. This is a heartbreaking volume and that ending, wow. This sets the series up for the epic confrontation. I tend to enjoy Cullen Bunn's independent work only and find his studio owned characters less interesting. Harrow County is a must-read for fans and people who don't understand the graphic novel medium.

Things are moving quickly in Harrow County. Emmy is struggling to maintain the haints while Beatrice is testing her own powers, all while the Family is moving to usurp Emmy, and Hester Beck's return is imminent. Does it feel like things are coming to a conclusion? If so, that's no surprise; Harrow County is ending with its next arc.

This news was a surprise to me, since I don't follow the titles I read outside of when the next collection is due to be released. It also saddens me, because this series (aside from one collection that seemed superfluous) was strong, with realized characters and smart, thematic horror. Harrow County has been Good Horror since the start, and that's a hard thing to find in recent years.

So, if you like horror, if you like Good Horror, and you haven't read Harrow County yet, get on it. You're missing out, and since the series will be ending before the end of the summer, you have a chance to binge through all of it in one sitting. You won't be disappointed.

I jumped right into the deep end with this book and it scared the crap out of me. OH YEAH!! The story even from this point is creepy as all out doors. Um, it starts with someone climbing out of their grave and it ends in a even creepier fashion. The story is very, very creepy and the illustrations are right there with it. What Bunn and Crook are about to do with words and pictures is a macrabra masterpiece. I dont know what happens in the previous volumes but what I was able to get from vol. 7 was a witch tale about this family in the country. One sister is buried and she comes back with a vengeance. She is pissed I mean she come out the ground to get revenge on the happiness her sister stole from her. Kammi borrows her sister's face and then goes and kills Emmy's Dad. Her focus is to destroy everything her sister loves and then kill her sister. I wont spoil it but somebody throws a house! I want to read the rest of them but the fear factor is real.

"Something evil has returned from the grave and joins forces with Emmy's wicked family for a brewing monster war!"

We might all have family troubles, but Emmy's must surely top the list of dysfunctional ones. This installment is really good, the art continues to be dark and bloody, and our girl keeps getting tested again and again, and could sure use a good long sleep for what we know is ahead. Dark times a' coming indeed!

“How long? Long enough that a hunger for cruel and bloody vengeance had rooted deep in her heart. And while this was the world of the living, not the dead… she would turn Harrow into hell before she was through.”

(Read in single issues) I cannot recommend Harrow County highly enough to horror fans, especially if you like folk horror. It somehow manages to be both deeply charming and disturbing at the same time. Harrow is consistently my favorite monthly comics series and it has only gotten better as it nears its conclusion.

Cullen Bunn outdoes himself in this volume as he ties up the mythology and emotional storylines into one impressive wallop of a story with wonderful engaging characters at its heart. And Tyler Crook's art is so beautiful and expressive, it is the perfect combination of idyllic rural landscapes and lively character art alongside horrifying creatures and brutal supernatural violence.

Emmy and Bernice battle a returned Kammi.

This is the best volume yet of this excellent, creepy, disturbing graphic novel series. There are deaths, and endings, and suffering. There's only one volume left in this story and I'll be sad to part with these characters who, along with some fake/haint townsfolk, have come to matter to me. The artwork in this volume, particularly the covers, is wonderful.

Don't be fooled by the pretty cover folks, it's all in the title of this book: "Dark Times A'Coming", it's getting ever closer to the end of days.

Ever since the beginning of the first book, it was clear the past never had any intention of staying buried for long in this series. In this arc, one of Emmy's greatest adversaries returns in this volume and she unleashes her cruel vengeance upon Emmy and Harrow, both whom will never be the same again. This book is filled with so much pain and heartbreak for everyone involved, Emmy, Bernice, Pa, the townspeople and even the villain herself. Our protagonist Emmy undergoes several drastic character changes in this arc, we see her turn from the innocent, sweet naive girl we met in the first arc to a much mature, hardened, young woman with filled with wisdom beyond her years, and she will need that wisdom for what's coming next. For the dark times aren't over, they've just begun.

Ahhh.... this is how you slowly draw a series to a conclusion! Emmy is facing off against old enemies and finding that her idyllic world is being torn apart at the seams. So much action and trauma! I desperately want to see how this all plays out, and I'm definitely worried about the fate of many of my favourite characters!
