Erotic, spiritual, and thought provoking, “The Experience” by Brandon Wade Alcocer will take you down an unexpected path towards self discovery.

Set primarily in Sin City, Alcocer introduces us to Professor Reid Bradley, a man paralyzed by his fears surrounding women that results in an inability to embrace himself fully, to truly understand and internalize his self worth. He meets the most unconventional mentor in a pimp named Wish, and through exploring his sexuality, learns to accept all aspects of dark and light within. The transformation is compelling and insightful for any reader intrigued by inner work.

I found “The Experience” an interesting premise that explains succinctly how sexuality is an often ignored, but essential, extension to who we are. Additionally, I particularly enjoyed how Alcocer took taboo elements of intimacy and sexual expression to bring to life the sense of service we all can offer each other. How wonderful would it be if we all embraced this type of self exploration?

There were a few idiosyncrasies with the writing that were noticeable while reading. More specifically, the dialogue often felt like a lecture instead of being organic and multidimensional. This made it feel clunky when the plot itself was flowing so nicely. There were also times when the storyline became predictable. However, this might have been purposeful on Alcocer’s part in an effort to show the ebb and flow of Professor Bradley’s inner growth. Something to consider in your own reading experience.

Overall, I truly recommend giving this novel your full attention. For myself, it gave me a lot to consider about society and the paradigms that surround our sexuality. When we stand in our truth, in our own bodies, how powerful we can be, how deeply we can impact each other!

I had never thought about stimulating our brains with ‘contrasts’ as a way to experience life in a better frame of mind. I learned through reading this book that “contrasts are vital for the brain’s ability to recognize the value of good times because we have experienced bad times.” And I certainly would never have thought a Pimp in Vegas would be a teacher of enlightening our way of thinking to bring more happiness into our lives. “Those who have seen the very worst in people possess a uniquely expanded awareness, allowing them to recognize the very best in people.” An eye opening story of changing our lives for the better and for the better of those around us.
The author’s words—portrayed through his character called Wish who just happens to be a pimp but not in the way we normally think—were poetic, mesmerizing, and at times spiritual. Whenever his character was brought into a scene, I found myself watching closely and listening carefully to every word he spoke as he mentored Reid, the young professor who was trying to make sense of his life.
I feel as though I have just attended a seminar on how to communicate without words. Everyone can easily learn this language and the outcome would be a society with more love, less hate. Definitely a book to consider.
