She loves him. She loves him not. When Cassandra Porter was seven years old, she fell in love with her next door neighbor and her best friends brother. Cass loved that boy every single day…until he broke her heart and all that remained were the pieces. Five years and what feels like a lifetime apart, that boy—now a grown and sexy, warm blooded man—is thrust back into her life. He might make her temper flair and blood boil, but a few unresolved feelings are no match for the way her heart races when he is near…She drives him the good kind of crazy. Paxton Luke led his life with one thing on his success. Friends and family come first, with no room for emotional attachments—not even with the neighbor girl, who's turned into a complete knockout. His sister's best friend. Emotions only lead to love, and love was trouble. They’re determined to fight this undeniable attraction to the bitter end. It’s too damn bad their hearts are about to get love drunk-- wasted on love.
Shirl Rickman is a writer, a dreamer, and an optimist. A small town Texas girl currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area with her beautifully blended family and their sweet, crazy dogs. When she's not dreaming up new love stories, Shirl can be found reading and drinking way too much coffee. She loves kindness, laughing and meeting her readers.
Well, this may just have been the most exhausting book I’ve ever read. She admits her love at the ripe age of twelve, he laughs at her, they’re attracted to each other, they hate each other, they pull each other in then they push each other away. For. Years. And, frustratingly enough, for the entire book. Yep, you read that right, the entire damn book!
The writing was fine but neither Cass or Paxton grew on me as main characters because I couldn’t get past all of the stupid games they were playing or the walls they’d built to keep themselves “safe”. After a while, I just felt tired.
Okay, so Love Wasted is about Cassandra Porter and her best friend's brother Paxton Luke. At 12 years old she has proclaimed her love for him. Paxton who does not feel same basically just laughed it off and eventually broke her heart. Due to this situation, over the years Cassandra has changed how she acted toward him and would avoid him at all costs. Paxton then leaves to go live out his ambitious dreams of making a name for himself but then 10 years later he's back in town. Both Cass and Pax try to start over as friends but then sparks are flying and a romance has begun.
I don't really know how I feel about this book, truly I don't. It's basically a girl next door book. At one point it seemed like insta-love (at least on Cass's end) but it actually turned out to be a slow burn kind of romance due to the fact that Pax tried his hardest not to have any feelings for Cass. Alas, he couldn't because this is a romance book after all. I did like the overall flow of their relationship but it did seem like in some parts of the story were choppy (if that makes sense?). Good book, could be a bit better, but overall it was a good book.
I've really struggled to write this review and if I could I would probably give it 3.5⭐️ I would say that because on one hand I did enjoy the sweet romance and the slow build up between Cass and Paxton but on the other hand I had difficulty keeping track of the timeline where it jumps between past and present.
I would recommend this book to someone who was looking to read an easy sweet romance with a HEA ❤
“Uncomfortably polite. It was uncomfortable because it never seemed sincere when she spoke to me. She kept her distance, and when she was forced to talk to me, it was curt and without much emotion.”
When Cassandra Porter was 12YO, her best friend’s brother, Paxton Luke, broke her heart. She’d idolised him since she was little but, from that day, she hated him. Over the subsequent years, she avoided him as much as she could, or when in his company, acted indifferent towards him. However, Paxton seemed to enjoy provoking her, but she gave back as good as she got.
“I’ve been away a long time, and I shouldn’t still feel this way when it comes to Cass – that conflicting feeling of want and guilt over allowing myself to want her.”
Paxton was determined to make a name for himself, and that meant leaving his home town to spread his wings. His ambition to succeed was everything to him. He’d always had a soft spot for Cass but she made him feel things that he wasn’t prepared to face, so he buried them by hurting her, over and over.
“I want Cassandra. I crave her more than I thought possible. She complicates what I’ve always thought I wanted for my life.”
By the time he comes back home to live, it’s been ten years since they’d seen one another. Cass is dismayed that her feelings for him have never changed. He’s dismayed that she affects him in ways he’s not prepared to acknowledge. However, when they find themselves living in close proximity, they attempt to start over as friends, but old feelings, mutual attraction, and jealousy get in the way.
Overall, I thought this was a great read, although I was a bit mystified as to why Pax felt so driven. There didn’t really seem to be a trigger for his ambition to prove himself. He had a loving family growing up, and a good upbringing. Cass really held on to her hurt and resentment, but I guess these feelings just festered over the years. I didn’t really understand her relationship with her on-again-off-again boyfriend. They had some weird understanding between them. I guess she hung onto him because she felt safe in a relationship that seemed to be going nowhere, and she only had to give a small part of herself over to it, since deep down, she still carried a torch for Pax.
It was clear that these two were destined to be together, but over the years, they just sabotaged their connection. It was great to follow them as they forged a deeper connection, and give in to the attraction that’s always been there between them.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of the book.
So many feels! The way the author utilized flashbacks was amazing - it added lovely fine layers to the story and stirred up such a longing and ache in me on the characters' behalf. Cassandra - our female lead - is so head over heels in love with her best friend's brother Paxton (the male lead) from the time she's 7 years old and time does nothing to diminish it. Little does she know that he is just as in love with her, but he fights and denies it with a fierceness that damages both of them. I really loved this book. I sort of want to give it 5 out of 5 wine glasses, but I think there were little elements missing. Like, we get to know way more about Pax - his motivations, his reasonings, his goals, his family and friends even - than we do about Cass and that makes the story a little lopsided, even though the dual first person POV was pretty evenly distributed. The only true motivation that we know about Cass is that she is in love with love. Regardless, the story was so well-written - angsty without being cringey, heartfelt without being cheesy or sappy, and sexy without being gratuitous. It is an exquisite slow burn on the level of Mariana Zapata's The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and Lingus. I would have been ecstatic to read at least 100 pages more, but the epilogue wrapped everything up nice and pretty. Love Wasted is just a beautiful book (even the chapter headers are gorgeous) - I ultimately give it 4.75 out of 5 wine glasses and Shirl Rickman is definitely going to be one of my authors to watch! In fact, I'm hoping that this is the beginning of a series, as I can see a book about Pax's sister/Cass' bestie, Delaney and/or Matt, Pax's best friend being very good. I guess we shall see...
Cassandra Porter has loved with her brother's best friend, and brother, since she was seven years old. She never wavered, not once, until the day he broke her heart into pieces. Five years of peace away from that boy later, he comes back into her life, and he's super sexy now, so she finds that feelings that she thought she had buried, are coming back to the surface. Paxton Luke is driven in the pursuit for success, but friends & family come first, which leaves little room for any romantic entanglements, even after seeing the neighbor girl who has grown into the complete sexy package now. And he can't get her out of his head, but he believes that emotions lead to love and trouble. But will they be able to deny the feelings that are trying to take over? I really like this author's writing style, as this is the second book that I've read, and I was hooked once again. But these two people were the most frustrating two people, and I wanted to shake them more than once throughout the story, with an extra junk punch for Paxton. The push and pull had me wound up to where I was just about pulling my hair out. So it's safe to say that Shirl Rickman had my dramatic emotions out crazier than normal, and that's the mark of a talented author in my eyes. And I found myself physically and mentally exhausted by the end. My one issue was the ending, it was a bit too rushed for me after all of the things that went on before. With all of that being said, I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
Love Wasted is an enjoyable read with a side of frustration , at times I was really hooked but then things happend that kind of irritated me but soon got over it when the heroine and hero got their heads out of the sand . The characters share a love hate relationship that sometimes went a little to far they both clearly felt something but fought it until it reached a point of not denying it anymore . Paxton and Cass really did have a sweet relationship once they got past there insecurities and hold ups. This would be my first read by Shirl Rickman and I plan to read more by this author in the future . copy provided for honest review **************************************** hero = 9 heroine = 9 secondary characters = 9 Chemistry = 8 romance = 8 humor = 4 darkness level = 4 enjoyment =8 angst = 8 action = 5 story line = 9 mystery = 5 character development = 7 pacing = 8 Plot = 8 cover = 10 stars = 4 author = 8 would I recommend this book = yes would I re read this book = yes would I read future books by this author = yes
This was such a cute story! Paxton and Cassandra always tried to cover up their love for one another growing, because they didn't know how to deal with it. You get flashbacks to their childhood throughout the entire story, which is fun, but at times made the story feel a bit choppy.
"The world around us continues to move, but I feel stuck in time, the girl who was once in love with a boy."
Cass was the girl next door, literally, she lived next door to Paxton and was his little sister's best friend. This was part of their problem from the beginning, but as they got older things changed, Cass tried to ignore the boy next door because she was in love with him, and Pax tried to protect when she didn't want to be protected.
At time I LOOOVED this story and then other times, if just fell flat for me. The end felt rushed and too much was packed in that bit, it felt really unresolved. Maybe there will be a connected story to fill in these gaps.
Paxton and Cass have always had some underlying feelings for one another, ever since they were young teens and Paxton was an untouchable. This book was a wonderful ode to not wasting the love you have in your life, but it also took a hot minute to get to the good stuff! I really didn't enjoy a lot of the back and forth between these two, they were hot one second and cold the next; but I also understand that's pretty typical of the age group we're talking about here. It was just so awkward to see them try to relate to one another, and learn how to be together when I think all Paxton saw was Cass as his kid sister's friend.
By the end of the book, I really did love their relationship, and it was interesting to see how they grew, and what all they learned about each other and how to connect.
I loved this book! This is a story about Cassandra (Cass) Porter and Paxton (Pax) Luke who have known each other since childhood. Paxton is a older brother, by a few years, of Cass's best friend Delaney (Laney) Luke. Since they were kids they have had a strong connection and have fought the love they have for each other. The story takes us back and forth to moments of them growing up to present day in their mid-late 20's. This story shows that sometimes you just can't deny your true feelings and what you think will hold you back is just yourself. I don't want to give away any details. This story was so much fun to get lost in. I recommend it for all readers who enjoy a good love story. There will be times when you want to shake the characters. But that's the fun of it all. I definitely will be looking into other books from this author!
Honestly I didn't think I could love a book as much as I loved Falling Slowly and Free Falling! But Shirl Rickman has done it again!
Paxton and Cass are perfect! Paxton with his arrogant charm and Cass with her good nature, loving ways. Childhood friends that want more but are both afraid of what the outcome might be.
True it's a story that's been told before. But this one is different in the fact that you really are rooting for them even when there might not be any hope. You just keep that optimistic attitude that true love really will win out in the end. If they can ever remove their heads out of their asses. Lol
This story will not disappoint! It's a page turner and you will be obsessed to find how it ends! Shirl Rickman is quickly becoming an author that I simply just one click now!
I will start off by saying that this was my first book by Shirl Rickman. I'm happy to report that it won't be my last. I really enjoyed her writing style.
Paxton and Cass are what we like to call Friends to Frenemies to Friends to Lovers..... I loved it all! I love how Cass wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She was kicking ass and taking names for her heart.
Love Wasted had me Love Drunk. I was rooting for them the whole time, even when they pissed me off, I still loved them. Their chemistry was like a storm you couldn't tame.
I do wish that they would have figured their shit out a little sooner, but I'm just a whiny baby lol. I really loved the chapters going from past to present it really helped me understand the characters even more.
I can't wait to go and read another book by Shirl.
Can a young love with a period of separation find it's way back? Cass is best friends with Laney, who's brother is Paxton. Cass, at the age of 7, had already fallen in love with Paxton. However, being older than the girls, Paxton was a jerk. What happens after not seeing each other for 10 years? When they've both grown up and moved onto bigger things?
I loved Love Wasted! It reminds us that love may just happen, but there is a lot that goes into maintaining it. Also, that feelings are vulnerable and rejection hurts, a lot. Shirl Rickman did a stellar job at putting us into the thoughts and feelings of Cass and Paxton. Laney was hysterical and was a great addition to the book for humor purposes. I loved this light read that made me excited to read! 5-stars!
Shirl Rickman just gets my secret “hopeless romantic” heart. In Love Wasted, we feel the struggle and subsequent death of unrequited love; the hot blush of scorn and the eternal frustration of anticipation. It’s palpable. Truly.
Cass & Pax, lifelong “friends” since childhood, cross paths over a span of decades. With nothing but snide remarks between the two for their entire history, how can they put the past behind them and be at least civil with one another? Having lied to themselves, and each other, for way too long this book is a slow burn to their dawning realizations.
At different points in Love Wasted I wanted to strangle Cass, and then Pax. And then the author! It was a great book that reeled me in without me even realizing I was caught.
Pax and Cass are adorably annoying. Not annoying to me, but annoying to themselves and one another. Shirl's writing is sweet and quirky and cute and everything I love about her books. "Love Wasted" starts out with a tale of forbidden love that most of us can relate to, and I was cheering on Pax and Cass the entire book, yelling at them to just put down the walls, talk and work through their push and pull. Once the story got to the meat and potatoes of everything, I screamed FINALLY (in my head for the most part). I will always be a fan of Shirl's writing and the dramatic back-and-forth of feeling and accepting emotions that she writes so well.
DNF 23% which is saying something due to how short this is, but I could see the writing on the wall. 45 pages in and there were so many repeated conversations, and the dialogue was so clunky and fake feeling. What led me to stop was Cas telling Pax she didn't hate him when asked even though she had internally said she did before in the story.
She gave all her reasoning for why she didn't hate him, and when he said he was glad because he had thought she hated him she just shrugged and said, "I do." You just spent a whole page convincing she didn't! How can there be so much inconsistency in one conversation that lasts two pages?
This is a new author for me, but goodness, I will certainly be adding her to my favourites and 1-click lists! Cass has had a love / hate relationship with her best friends brother Paxton for years. Will they finally have a HEA? No spoilers; please give this one a go for yourself, you will not be disappointed! This author has written a beautiful storyline, which had me hooked and intrigued from the very beginning. This story has heartbreak, humour, banter, and love. I look forward to reading more of this authors work. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book!
Love Wasted isn't my first novel by Shirl Rickman, and it definitely won't be my last. She never fails to keep me book-satisfied!
Cass and Porter have been in a chemistry-filled tug-of-war match since they were kids. The love/hate relationship and witty banter was amazing and fun to read. And Laney - I flipping love her character! She reminds me of my best friend.
Thank you again, Shirl, for such beautiful, charming, funny, sexually-tense words.
I found this story to be a sweet story of childhood love realized. Cass and Paxton were written well and the chemistry between the two of them was crazy. I cheered for them the entire story to pull their heads out if the sand, stop being stubborn, and make things happen. My only upset with the story is that I want more. Hopefully we can see more of Pax and Cass in the future.
OMG! Fantastic read! I felt glued in the middle of Cass and Paxton. Each time I opened Love Wasted I was stuck in it until it was time for me to adult. The tension, chemistry, push and pull, emotions, and overall feelings keep you intrigued as to what was coming next. The wait for the explosion of their feelings was way worth it. You gotta watch what you say because sometimes it comes back to bite you.
If you are looking for angst and indescribable feelings, then this is the book for you. It's hard growing up and hiding your feelings for your best friends older brother, and take into account the older brother feels the same way, but doesn't know what to do about it.....well you can see where you need a whole book to figure this out. This book is face paced, easy to read and incredibly sweet. Enjoy the story of this book.
Cass fell hard for Pax when they were children and he was her BFF's older brother.
I think Pax had a thing for her too, but a situation caused him to react and embarrass her. She pushed him away and seemed to never look back. But she really always carried those feelings for him.
Years later, grown, they are tossed into a situation where they interact 24/7. Will this finally push them together? Or will it tear them apart?
Well written cat and mouse and a fun read with some real feelings!
I really enjoyed this book. It's very well written. I like the characters and their story. The relationship between Cass and her best friend Laney seems real to me. I really like Paxton, we learn a lot about him. I also enjoyed the fact that the epilogue wrapped things up nicely. Another great book by Shirl Rickman. Can't wait for what she writes next!
I'm a terrible review writer, but I want to support the indie authors out there who write because they love it.
This book was a sweet story, I loved the back and forth between Cass and Pax. This book kept me interested and I read it in a day. If you're looking for a nice sweet read, check this book out. :)
I really enjoyed the story of Cass and Pax. And their hating each other. While you knew love was underneath all of their actions. It took them a while to get it together over the years. There's a thin line between love and hate and that line is usually explosive!
This book was fun and quirky but didn't get to meat of the story until the last 15-20%. Their "issues" were weird and I had a hard time connecting with them. But the end was worth it.
The story of Cass and Pax and their journey from childhood frenemies to lovers is fantastic! Reading how they both try to deny and push down their feelings for each other for so long made this book one that I literally couldn't put down! Loved it!
I voluntarily accepted an advanced reader copy of this book.
Not bad typical little sister best friend crushing on the older brother. These two couldn't make up their minds whether they hated each other or loved each other.
I did like reading the past and then the present from both characters.
Great story of off limits best friends brother. I really enjoy these type of love stories. Pax and Cass have know each other their whole lives. They fought to hate one another. It was a great book!! The ending was perfect!!
