Rate this book
The popular series continues with this must-have for anyone who wants to kick the sugar habit and shed unwanted poundsThe average American consumes 21 teaspoons of added sugars a day. It's not surprising that sugar is a major contributing factor in the nation's growing obesity epidemic. As consumer awareness of sugar's health implications increases, so does the list of books on the subject. Most of these books advise readers to cut back on sweets, but they don't say how. Win the Sugar War uses entertaining, inspirational personal profiles as the foundation for practical, actionable strategies that empower readers to take charge of an out-of-control sweet tooth.

Like Win the Fat War and Win the Cholesterol War, this engaging new volume contains 100 real-life stories of people who have struggled against sugar and emerged victorious. Readers will meet Donna, who traded chocolate for water; Paula, who hides away sweets and is no longer tempted to find them; and Robert, who takes a hike when cravings strike. Each personal profile concludes with a Winning Action -- a tested, proven technique that can help anyone overcome their cravings, lift their spirits without sweets, and lose weight as a bonus. The book also features a self-test for readers to assess how much sugar they consume and why, a chart identifying the top 50 sugar sources, and a 10-step action plan for reducing sugar consumption.

Win the Sugar War easily complements other popular programs such as Sugar Busters! and Potatoes not Prozac. With the trusted Prevention brand and a respected, authoritative author, Win the Sugar War is set to follow in the bestselling footsteps of Win the Fat War and others in the series.

A little outdated, but overall, there are some great tips in here for cutting back sugar. I got a kick out of the truck driver who kept a bag of sliced meat on the dash and grabbed bites as she drove down the road.

“Win the sugar war” by Holly McCord R.D. Rodale Inc.2002

“Win the sugar war” is a reference book about sugar and its effects on the body. Holly McCord lists preventative measures that one can take to avoid common diseases triggered by too much sugar intake such as diabetes and heart disease. One technique used throughout the book was research. The author, Holly McCord is a registered dietician, this lends credibility. “Because I’m a registered dietician, most people expect me to have some sort of ingrained resistance to sweets. After all, I – of all people-should understand the potential consequences of eating too much sugar.” Credibility is important in literary journalism. Research is important when writing nonfiction. The reader is then able to trust the author’s expertise.

Older book so not the most up to date regarding artifical sweetners, but good tips from lots of different people regarding how to resolve a sweet tooth issue.

The one great take-away for me is that 5 grams is a level teaspoon of sugar. Grams sound really small - like grains, but a teaspoon is something I can see in my mind when deciding to choose a cereal with x grams per serving.

Great book! I enjoyed the stories written by people who have conquered their sugar addictions. I gained a new perspective from these stories. Very positive and encouraging.

this is an accumulation of all the stupid magazine articles you've read in every doctor's office in the past 20 years on the subject of sugar.

I actually didn't finish, just a bunch of other people sharing their experiences. Some were kind of inspiring, but others just blah.
