Join the toughest crew of Autobots around on a trio of missions where they'll face seemingly insurmountable odds and things are guaranteed to end badly.
Three tales of the legendary Wreckers from creators Nick Roche and James Roberts are collected into this special edition! From the prison planet of Garrus-9 and a mysterious siege, to the lonely exploits of a kidnapped Prowl, Roche and Roberts, with artist Guido Guidi, reveal traitors, long-lost secrets, and all the hard-nosed action that made the Wreckers the legends they are.
Collects Last Stand of the Wreckers , Sins of the Wreckers , and The Requiem of the Wreckers one-shot.
I understand why Sins and Requiem are collected here, but it does them no good to follow up Last Stand of the Wreckers.
Last Stand of the Wreckers is not Roberts' best work, but it's a great start for his long career on IDW's Transformers comics. Though not as good at character relationship's and action as MTMTE it's still a great miniseries and clearly the best one in this collection.
Sins of the Wreckers tries to go the same way as Last Stand, but overall feels like a lesser work. Despite that, we do get some interesting things about Springer and Impactor, along with Prowl being a bigger asshole and getting IDW's version of Tarantulas.
Requiem of the Wreckers is a middling conclusion; a one-shot rather than a miniseries, it makes an OK payoff to Springer's relationship with Impactor and Tarantulas, but the ending for both him and Overlord feels off, as if rushed to finish those dangling plots rather than organic conclusions to both characters.
Though I can tell that the lack of Roberts handling the writing in the latter stories made for middling sequels, overall this is still a strong collection and a must read for fans of the franchise.
This comic was absolutely amazing!! I am a major Transformers fan. I have seen almost every on screen Transformers adaptation and I have read the Transformers: Exiles by Alex C. Irvine. But the Wreckers Saga was the first Transformers comic I have ever read. I loved every character in this book. I have never seen Springer in a leadership position before but he fulfilled the role very well. Impactor was one of the deepest and morally gray characters I have read about. Kup is one of my favorite characters from the G1 movie so it was great to see him in the book (smoking his "cygar"). A certain villain (don't want to spoil the surprise) towards the second half of the book really shocked me. I didn't know this character would be in the book, but I liked his inclusion in the story. His backstory with Prowl and Springer was so interesting. Overall, I loved seeing Wreckers as a team. The Wreckers don't get enough attention in the television or movie adaptations. It was wonderful to see the team working together and taking on impossible missions. The Wreckers are amazing and I give this comic book a solid 5 stars!! Wreck and Rule!!!!
Overall, I like it. As a trilogy (somewhat), it works out really well. There are recurring characters - not everyone dies like MTOs at Simanzi. Wooo!! I really like Springer. He is such a paragon of virtue compared to other characters in the book that it was hard to dislike him. I would argue that the saga is mostly about Springer's journey, about how being a Wrecker affects him and his view and later decisions. But I'm not going to rant about Springer all the review, so I have to talk about other things, like
THINGS I REALLY LIKE
The art is gorgeous. It is vivid and magnetically violent. The art compliments the story perfectly. It is dark and full of action. I won't recommend this book to anyone who don't like to see excessive violence, because it is full of the goriest depictions done to space robots I've ever seen. However, the violence doesn't detract from the plot. The plot kinda needs it because this is a story of an elite squad full of happy-trigger and troubled people going on dangerous missions. I don't usually like grim-dark or dark stories much, in general, because the tone is usually overdone to the point of unreadable. But, the Wreckers Saga manages to strike a balance between humor and horror, and despair and hope.
Characters are amazing, and I like what they do to Prowl most. He is portrayed as a deeply flawed but not totally unsympathetic, a character so embedded in the gray morality area that you can't imagine why he can be the "good guy". There are many characters like Prowl in the book, Impactor for example. He kills opponents, even comrades, even in their most vulnerable moments, but I can understand why he does it. And he still has people he cares about and wants to protect.
But I want to talk about the most memorable and overall incredible main antagonists of the stories: Overlord and Tarantulas.
NOTE: SPOILERS
YES, THIS OVERLORD IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! DON'T TRY TO CHANGE MY MIND!!!
He is my TOP favourite villain right now. Deliciously evil, with no redemption qualities. I don't see why we need a sympathetic villain when we have Overlord right here. He is unsympathetic and just full-blown Disney villain, plus the 18+ psychopathic sadist angle that Disney wouldn't want. Overlord is a joy to read. He is the roller coaster that starts innocently slow and scary at first, and then suddenly does two flips and launches off the rails completely. His decision to leave the Decepticon is mad and unbelievable, but we can see it, just not right away!
And then, in Requiem, he still hasn't gotten over his obsession with Megatron! Megatron is the goal of his life! He literally wants to conquer Megatron again and again and again! It's like he has this sadomasochistic one-sided relationship with His Lordship Decepticon.
By the time I finished Last Stand, I was right over the hills, crushed under the debris of the roller coaster. But then, Tarantulas arrived in the form of a hidden bomb under the carriage and blew me to pieces.
Now, this is what a sympathetic Overlord looks like.
It is quite obvious how Overlord and Tarantulas are alike and different in certain aspects. While Overlord obsesses over defeating Megatron, Tarantulas obsesses over working with Prowl (and possibly owning him). Tarantulas is much more sympathetic than Overlord, however, not that it is a difficult achievement or anything.
Tarantulas is a scientist, a mad one at that, and a student of Shockwave if that doesn't ring any alarm already. He wants to create endlessly and see his creations work, so he helped Prowl while he was only Mesothulas the secret Neutral boyfriend scientist that Prowl frequented for another one of his Secret Schemes(TM). Not to say that Tarantulas is a good person. He is a morally gray-ish character, a foil to Prowl. That's what makes his interaction with Prowl so interesting and thought-provoking. Tarantulas is Prowl's demon, just as Prowl is Tarantulas' muse.
Also, Tarantulas is Springer's creator and really cares about him, so I'm biased towards the furry almost time-traveller. Sue me.
However, I want to talk about one thing I kinda have to nitpick.
THE DISSONANCE
Look, I'm not saying that Sins of the Wreckers is bad. It's just that its tone and storytelling style is such a contrast to its predecessor that makes it hard for me to enjoy. New characters are not as interesting as the ones in Last Stand of the Wreckers, so I have no emotional investment in them as much. Well, except for Hubcap, a little bit, I guess. Mostly because he is killed by Impactor when unarmed, which is a shitty thing to do, Impactor. There is also little humour, which makes it just stark and bleak and unimpressive compared to the previous one. But that might just be my personal taste, for I always like some ironic light-hearted moments in dark stories.
Requiem of the Wreckers is okay... I guess(?). I don't know how to feel about this one, except that it ties most of its loose ends. Also, it's a goodbye to Springer, and an end to his chapter. That alone makes me happy enough.
FINAL VERDICT Yes, I like the saga. Very much. Despite its flaws. If you like a complete stories of a Transformers version of Suicide Squad, read it. Action. Drama. Horror. Very much recommend.

James Roberts takes the autobots vs decepticons war to another level. Highly emotional, a lot of soul searching underneath the merciless onslaught in the pages. Impactor's anti-hero persona should be explored further in years to come, he's pretty much the wolverine in this series and Overlord is a psychopath worthy of being the successor of the decepticon throne. Highly recommended for science fiction enthusiasts and transformers fans looking for something else besides the optimus vs megatron battle.
This is one freakin awesome comic. Packed full of heart, violence, action, humor, twists and sacrifice. The story is really emotional and symbolic of the horrors that real heroes face in war. This comic was about A LOT more than just giant robots from space. It was really emotional and it made the characters feel so alive and real. The giant robots feel like real people and you really feel yourself connecting with all of the characters in the comic. I like to congratulate the authors on doing such a good job on this. I give it a 10 out of 10.
I had read only a tiny handful of IDW Transformers comics before I picked this up. It's mostly self-contained but I did have to look up a few things up -- a few times, I'd go to look up something, feeling like I was missing some detail, and would come to find that I wasn't supposed to know those details yet! So I really enjoyed it despite it being a bit more bleak than maybe I was prepared to handle at this particular moment.
I'm continually impressed by the IDW Transformers continuity, mining a fairly simplistic concept and subject matter for surprisingly humane and relevant storytelling. This was more of the same. Clearly I missed out and need to catch up.
The reason I only gave it 4 stars is that nothing is perfect. 😉 Essential for any reader wanting to dig deeper into Transformers. I was particularly impressed by Nick Roche's work. First class...
Fun ideas, even if the execution wasn't the best. IDW Prowl character's firmly cemented as being A Huge Asshole, and making your very bad break-up have a body count.
Doesn’t focus on core characters (no Optimus or Megatron), which frees up storytelling. Second story arc included is the best, but nice wrapup at the end. can be read as a stand-alone which is nice.
The Last Stand of the Wreckers is phenomenal and the rest is a slog to get through. Sins and Requiem have far too much dialogue with extraneous details and boring plots.
